Aldrich, Devourer of Gods is a Lord of Cinder and a Boss enemy in Dark Souls 3 (DS3). This Dark Souls 3 Aldrich Boss Guide features locations, strategies and videos on how to defeat Aldrich, Devourer of Gods easily, as well as tips, weaknesses, trivia and lore notes for the Aldrich boss.

Aldrich appears to the player as a dark mass of bones and flesh with the upper body of and garments similar to those worn by Gwyndolin in Dark Souls. He attacks with Gwyndolin's weapons - a catalyst that is imbued with fire after being brought down to a certain health threshold, and a bow.

As with most boss fights in Dark Souls 3, this boss fight can be challenging to players of all skill levels. When avoiding Aldrich's attacks, it is recommended to roll away as opposed to blocking due to the erratic nature of his attacks. Anri of Astora can summon the player to their world for assistance with this boss fight if their questline has been fulfilled. This boss is not optional - all Lords of Cinder must be defeated to progress through the game.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that drop Boss Souls capable of being transformed into powerful Weapons, Spells, and Items for the player.

Dark Souls 3 Aldrich Attacks

Attack Name Description
Lunge Quickly lunges forward for a melee hit after a short charge up. Dodge roll to the side of it.
Horizontal Swing (Phase 1) Swings "Gravelord-Halberd" in a wide arc and deals high damage. Dodge roll into it.
Soul Spear (Phase 1) After a short charge up, thrusts two soul spears towards you which can pass through pillars. Dodge roll out of the way. Deals significant damage. Up to five soul spears can be thrust in succession during Phase 2. Less likely to use soul spears at close range.
Flame Trail (Phase 2) Emerges from the ground in a burst of flames, swathing the ground in fire that will burn players who stand within it. Kite Aldrich away from the flames.
Homing Soul Mass (Phase 1) Casts several homing soul masses. Use pillars to block them. (Phase 2) Casts homing soul masses after every retreat.
Scythe Spin Draws a Lifehunt Scythe (miracle) and spins twice, stealing a bit of health.
Arrow Barrage

(Phase 1) Creates an expanding wave of arrows, dealing very high magic (and thrust) damage.

(Phase 2) Creates a wave of arrows, which seeks his enemy.

General Tips

  1. Aldrich, like most Dark Souls 3 bosses, is a very vicious boss with powerful attacks that can easily do 700 HP in damage to the player. That means like with most bosses, there are only 1-3 seconds to hit him safely. No getting greedy!
  2. Aldrich is using the half-eaten, twisted upper body of Dark Sun Gwyndolin, and amplifying his abilities. That means he has the same attacks, but he's more dangerous. He can open up with any of his attacks, but is least likely to melee, since the player starts some distance from him. During this open-up, make sure to get a lock on, and keep it, because you can avoid off-camera insta-kills this way.
  3. Aldrich's moveset  is avoidable with basic moves, like dodging and running. He will sometimes throw his giant Gwyndolin soul-arrow while also using his trailing showering arrows, and will use this attack often. Since this arrow attack is very long, it is easy to lose all your stamina, and get caught, even with 120-130 stamina and a chloranthy ring. What one should do is wait for the arrows to come close, then begin spamming dodge roll, since it is efficient on stamina, and will allow for the player to dodge the soul arrow with proper timing. This is the KEY way to preserve estus during the fight, and out-last Aldrich. His other attacks are avoidable with basic game control knowledge, so no need to explain there. It is wise to also not let Aldrich control the player's movement, so that avoiding one attack puts him in the position to be hit with another, so be very careful about how stamina is allocated for dodging homing soul arrows, and such.
  4. Despite being able to stagger Aldrich when hitting his tail, the tail takes reduced damage from attacks. Be sure to aim for the torso if given the choice.
  5. Aldrich has low health, but he is extremely dangerous for this reason, and can kill in two hits, under three seconds, like the worst of bosses. Don't get too nonchalant and take him seriously, and you can end the fight well, without using your embers or buffs, which can be used on harder bosses. Think of Aldrich as about 50% harder than the Crystal Sage, and you have a good estimation of how powerful his character build is.
  6. Aldrich is kind of a fast mover, and will swipe quite a bit if you are in front of him. So stay near his tail, and you can avoid some damage, and save about three estus flasks that way. Try not to get distracted by his up and down floatation, because it doesn't matter much.
  7. The area before Aldrich, up until the Church Of Yorshka bonfire, from the Central Irithyll bonfire can net about 11k souls easy, with a basic Covetous Silver Serpent Ring. It is a good idea to take advantage of this caveat, because the player can passively buff his build with more stats, making Aldrich's weakness of low health even bigger.
  8. As to his attacks, knowing the telegraphs Aldrich uses with his weapon is not fully important, as the player has some time to see them coming at him to avoid them, but by all means, the player should take the privilege of learning his telegraphs with his weapon.

How to fight and beat Aldrich, Devourer of Gods

Strategy 1 (Melee)

Aldrich seems to be very weak to attacks on the tail. Multiple attacks will stagger and cause Aldrich to fall if it is standing higher for an attack. When you enter the room, rush towards Aldrich and begin attacking. Dodge roll any melee attacks and soul spears. Hide behind pillars to block homing soul masses. Run around the room away from Aldrich when he whips out a bow, as he will fire an Arrow Barrage over the area. Return to attacking when arrows end. He will periodically retreat and pop up at the corner of the room which is the farthest from you. Move to the center of the room and watch where he appears. Immediately move in to attack once he appears. At about 70% health Aldrich will be augmented with flames, gaining a damage boost and leaving trails of fire in its path.

Strategy 2 (Pyromancy)

This strategy involves using Great Chaos Fire Orb and Flash Sweat. Use any high Magic Resistance armors as well as pyromancy equipment. Cast Flash Sweat before entering the boss room. Sprint towards Aldrich and close the distance, preventing him from casting Soul Spears. Start casting Fire Orbs, while dodging any attacks. Follow dodging patterns in Strategy 1.

Alternatively, you can just stand behind pillars and lob Chaos Bed Vestiges or Great Chaos Fire Orbs at him. He will take massive damage, and the only attacks you'll have to worry about are his Soul Spears (which can be dodged easily) and the tracking Arrow Rain in Phase II, which can be outrun.

Strategy 3 (Sorcery/Melee)

Twisted Wall of Light can be used it to negate Aldrich's soul masses and arrow barrage (**does not work with soul spear**). If you are using augmented spells like Greater Magic Weapon apply it before entering in the fog. Once inside rush towards Aldrich and follow strategy one. If you are caught off guard then cast Twisted Wall of Light until Aldrich stops casting. Continue closing the gap to deal melee damage and make sure to top off your FP when Aldrich teleports out.

The dark miracle Vow of Silence can be used to cancel nearly all of Aldrich's attacks, including the Soul Masses, Soul Spear, Arrow Barrage, and even the dark vortex he sends out before teleporting. However, Vow of Silence dissipates quickly, so time your attacks carefully.

Strategy 4 (Sorcery)

Pestilent Mist can be used to good effect. Aldirch can be trapped behind the pillars fairly easily, and the spell can be cast before the arrow barrage attack if timed quickly. It is best used after melee attacks, however as they usually cause Aldrich to become unstuck. Whilst casting arrow barrage Aldrich will not move (may need confirming). During phase 2 this strategy works best casting pestilent mist after the arrow barrage attack as it is longer in the fire phase. Suggested rings: Bellowing Dragoncrest RingYoung Dragon RingLingering Dragoncrest Ring and Sage Ring. The player can use far casting spells such as Greater soul arrow during this strategy.

It is recommended that the player also removes the Crown of Dusk as Aldrich can easily one shot and un-embered player. Blue Bug Pellets can be used to mitigate magic damage taken (roughly 2 per fight).

Aldrich Lore Theories

  • "Aldrich, infamous for his appetite for flesh, apparently had the desire to share with others his joy of imbibing the final shudders of life while luxuriating in his victim's screams." - Aldrich's Sapphire/Ruby
  • "Aldrich dreamt as he slowly devoured the God of the Darkmoon. In this dream, he perceived the form of a young, pale girl in hiding" - Lifehunt Scythe. This is most likely a reference to either Priscilla, and how her Painted World is akin to a dream in which she is hiding from the real world, or to Yorshka, who is found hiding at the top of the chapel in Irithyll. Given Aldrich's similar abilities, it is possible that he devoured both Gwyndolin and Priscilla.
  • As stated in Hawkwood's dialogue, "He ate so many that he bloated like a drowned pig, then softened into sludge, so they stuck him in the Cathedral of the Deep".  Because of this, it has led many to believe that Aldrich is a  Man-Grub, a monster found in the Cathedral or that the Man-Grubs are made in Aldrich's image.
  • Given their shared status as infamous maneaters, the fact that killing Aldrich nets Smough's Set from The Shrine Handmaiden much as killing others nets their armor, and the fact that when Aldrich returns to his true home, he is found in the cathedral of Anor Londo, it is likely that Smough became Aldrich, possibly through consumption of huge quantities of humanity through the men he ate.
  • Aldrich had devoured Gwyndolin, who was ill at the time, thus possessing much of the latter's abilities as well as appearance
    • Aldrich was locked up and forced to become a Lord of Cinder, as opposed to willingly sacrificing himself or becoming cursed like Prince Lothric.
  • Pontiff Sulyvahn says in his dialogue that he imprisoned a God of the old royalty, Gwyndolin, son of Lord Gwyn (the old royal).
  • After performing a melee attack, Aldrich won't move for a while, which could be the result of not fully being used to Gwyndolin's body.

Aldrich Trivia

  • Use items that boost stamina regeneration, such as (Budding) Green Blossoms, the Cloranthy Ring or the Galvanize Skill, since a lot of rolling/sprinting is required.
  • Because Aldrich's teleport attack is not based on damage dealt to him or the health he has, it is advised to watch out for whenever he performs a teleport, as the AoE attack can easily kill you if you aren't prepared.
  • Due to the fire around Aldrich during phase 2 being so weak, trying to avoid it can prove to be a waste of time and may leave you open to other attacks.
  • The arena you fight Aldrich in has a few similarities to the one where you fight the dragon,  Darkeater Midir.
  • The Arrow Barrage is the boss' most dangerous move. In the first phase it can be dodged by going up close to the boss and simply rolling behind the boss when it casts, but in the second phase the arrows track you and last for roughly 3-4 times as long. These can be dodged effectively by rolling in a triangular or circular pattern, although the boss can cast Soul Spear at the same time.
  • During Phase 2, you can also run away and back, forming a big loop and covering at least two pillars of distance. The arrows will be ended by the time you get back on Aldrich's face. Prepare for a Soul Spear on your return.
Another effective way to dodge the arrows in the second phase is to simply wait for them to come close then run in a circle around a pillar.
  • The arrows have trouble crossing over the pillars and are slowed down by it greatly. Additionally, the pillar will defend against many projectiles Aldritch throws at you and the fact that you are running will dodge the rest. This works best with a summon or when doing it with Anri so that your friend can keep agro and damage on Aldritch.
  • Despite Aldrich's plural title, Gwyndolin is the only God confirmed to have been devoured.
  • The blade on the end of his staff is the Gravelord Sword; this has led many to speculate that he may have devoured Nito as well. However, there are no other lore implications to support this claim, as Nito was destroyed in Dark Souls 1.
  • Aldrich possesses buff miracle that uses a staff as a catalyst, casting it at the start of combat. Entering the room and zooming in quickly allows one to see the staff itself, which is a Golden Ritual Spear.
  • His theme lifts elements from both Dark Sun Gwyndolin/Moonlight Butterfly's theme.
  • His name is likely derived from Germanic name Aldric, formed from the elements ald "old" and ric "ruler, power". Given his lore, he might be a reference to Saint Aldric, who was a 9th-century bishop of Le Mans.
  • His name is spelled "エルドリッチ" in Japanese, which is read as "Eldritch," possibly a reference to H.P. Lovecraft.
  • Examining the floor, the bones of the many hundreds, possibly thousands of beings that Aldrich has consumed may be seen floating within the sludge. Given his use of the Gravelord's sword and that his own body is, effectively, a mass grave; Aldrich may be considered the new Gravelord in replacement of Gravelord Nito, whose own body was also an aggregate collection of bones, rather than a reincarnation or corruption of Gwyndolin whom he merely manipulates as he would a puppet during this encounter.
  • Oddly enough, Aldrich's attacks will still deal magic damage during his second phase, rather than dealing fire damage akin to how the other three Lords of Cinder do so during their second phases.
  • The arena you fight Aldrich in is the same arena you fight Orstein and Smough in the original Dark souls.

Intelligence builds! If you're struggling here, two recommendations:

1: Twisted Wall of Light. Despite some other comments, I've found that Twisted Wall of Light works against the arrow rain very well. Just get some distance, stand still, and cast it while looking upwards. It doesn't last long but it doesn't chug much FP either, so you can easily recast it as much as necessary. Depending on what Aldrich combos the arrow rain with, this won't always work, but it is still a lifesaver imo.

2: Immolation Tinder! Very strong Halberd that scales mainly off of Int, but uniquely does phys/fire damage instead of phys/magic. It even casts sorceries with its heavy attack if you'd like to use it with a shield. The stat investment to wield it is kinda steep, but it works wonders here and against anything else magic resistant.

I dislike his fight and hate him lore wise, I thought Mohg was bad but this guy is even worse. I wish that I could kill him over and over letting him suffer like the people he ate. Truly scum staining an already bad world.

There's a difference between a fun and awarding boss fights, and just straight up frustrating ones - FromSoft should really just release an official apology for this boss.

I noticed Lords of Cinder enter an “Embered” state in phase two, except for Prince Lothric because he never linked the fire. It’s a nice detail and callback to their past deed. And then there’s Aldrich sh*tting a trail of fire like he downed a platter of tacky seafood. Probably something he ate…

              • Anonymous

during one my playthrough, Aldrich kept spamming a rain of arrows in BOTH phases, kept either teleporting away before even getting a chance to get to him or immediately doing aoe teleport slam once I got close to him - it was a victory against all odds but I think that even bosses can troll sometimes

                • Anonymous

Let's play my favorite game, "Aldrich fires a rain of magical arrows that lasts for ten seconds before sh*tting out fire, teleporting away and doing it all over again"

                  so much fun

Garbo boss. None of his attacks are difficult to dodge, they just test your patience because you can't reasonably do anything else when they're active since they home in. If you're unlucky you'll sit around for ages running from his ranged attacks, only for him to teleport when you get close. Why is DS3 like this??!?!?!

                    • Anonymous

Love the pyromancy route: regardless of your build or level, you can run up to him and hurl a Great Chaos Fire Orb or two, then drink a blue flask just as he teleports. Use a Deep Ring if you need and extra attunement slot.
Fire clutch ring or Lloyd Sword + Witch’s Ring + Great Swamp ring.

                      • Anonymous

No leveling run, merc class, fire Uchigatana +10, run always to him so he cant use the arrows spell, ideally you want to deal half of his health in the first two teleports. Critical point of the fight is avoiding the arrow spell in second phase, because that means spam of spears, that bs dark orb spell, etc. Again, predict where he is going to reappear and rush him down, dont get greedy with the teleport damage and the fire damage in second phase. With a bit of practice and good RNG its yours.

If you are int build and stuck on this *****, just get profaned flame pyromancy, you don't need faith to use it and it does good damage to this guy and knocks him down. Plust always hits at head lmao so bonus damage as well. Melted him in 5 pyro spell use.

I'm trying to beat him on sl1 but the arrow rain attack it's impossible to dodge, not because of the attack itself but because he likes to combo with a random attack. I'm sick of getting oneshotted by this f****r. Can someone give me an advice please?

                            • Anonymous

Love how when i killed him it took me to another boss fight that is equally as hard or possibly harder and i died in the arena and then died again before getting my 50K souls back.... i also had no estus and made a fire build specifically for aldrich turns out he is resistant to fire i think... thanks dark souls 3

this guy can be cheesed if you enter the boss room as far as possible on the right side once u enter spam back step if u did it right aldrich’s ai shouldn’t activate

The only problem is the absurd rain of arrows in the second phase. You get caught by it - you are dead. So when she starts casting, immediately run towards the opposite corner of the room and then run sideways from this BS rain until it ends (do not be tempted to start attacking her prematurely). Nothing else worked for me, I was close to smashing my joystick until I came up with this.

Stamina run out before the phase 2 arrow ends. And ı have 26 endurance lmao. And he deals tick damage everytime ı try to attack him because of the trail of flame. Sometimes ı wish ı was a pyromancy spammer too.

                                    • Anonymous

Pretty easy if you're a melee build particularly if you make use of fire resin/carthus flame arc and you stick close to his behind and beware of the arrow storm and don't get greedy, but for the love of god don't get far away from him, the spell spamming he does when you're at a distance is just ridiculous

                                      • Anonymous

If Gwyndolin had stayed dead after I killed him in the first dark souls he wouldn't be in this predicament.

Whenever he burrows underground, I run straight back to the center of the room, look around and wait completely paranoid, and once I see he’s about to pop up at whichever corner he chooses, I sprint to him like the wind. It usually cancels out his rain of arrows.

first ds3 boss that gave me trouble (maybe bc no summon im bad) but i beat it fourth time in with heavy greatsword + flame enbalm doing heavy R2s to body when i could and hugging the corner for phase 2

Anri being kind of an ungrateful brat. You summon me to help you, but I can't summon you to help me? Return the favor!

Died on this guy a few too many times on a recent playthrough, sl55 black knight greatsword +4, until i realized that literally every single time he teleports he goes to the farthest corner from where i am, after realizing that was consistent thing and i could know where he would pop up each time and i could be ready with a charged thrust and beat him on the next try after noticing that his teleporting is completely predictable, thought id share incase that helps anyone, def one of the hardest bosses in the game for me each time.

I also noticed if i rolled to the side and behind him far enough right after his arrow rain started then he would stop it early, where as if i ran away the rain would last a loooong time and often use all my stamina even if full when it started, not to mention he casts several other spells by that time

                                                Good luck!

Its strange to me what is a weakness listed on some of these bosses, 28% thrust is a weakness but 29% slash is not? Most of his defenses are so close that unless you are using magic you are probably fine

                                                  • Anonymous

Don't know if "resistant" to bleed is accurate, unless it has to go somewhere. He's just neither especially weak nor especially vulnerable. I have a SL60 FTH/LCK build and used a full-on bleed strat. About 4-5 rounds of Dorhys' Gnawing and spamming a blood-infused bandit knife took him out. Proc'd at least once each round.

                                                    • Anonymous

Idk how people say he's easy. I do plenty of damage, but that 2nd phase arrow rain+homing soul mass+soul arrow+fire circle around him ALL SIMULTANEOUSLY is the most weapon spam B.S. ive seen in this game. I dodge 3/4 of them, and whatever attack i didnt avoid always gets me. No other boss has taken me more than 4 tries, and here i am on try #23.

Doesnt help that From cant keep their servers together long enough for me to get him below 20% health before i get disconnected from the server too >:(

This is bullshit, it would be easy if it wasn't for the camera angle that gets all messed up while this piece of crap moves. This is trash and it's crazy that the series can't fix this ****. It's trash

If you have read James Clavell's book "Shogun", you may be familiar with this event in the early chapters: the Dutch warship, The Erasmus, piloted by the English John Blackthorne, lands on the shores of Japan and it's crew is captured by a local Samurai Lord and thrown into a pit. One of the crew, the cook I believe, is taken up from the pit and then put into a large pot of water. The Samurai Lord orders it to be heated slowly to the boiling point. The poor fellow didn't see much of Japan.

I think it is highly probable that whoever created, "Aldrich, Devourer of Gods", must have been a descendant of that Samurai Lord.

Stick on the Archdeacon robes and respond to the arrow attacks by running serpentine. Should be able to avoid the magic attacks and arrows fairly easily. Get in a few whacks and you're golden. Just good old patience (and scurying)

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

This is not just a "git gud" boss (on account you need to notice the telegraphs), this is also a "good luck" boss.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • The only one who had insight on what would come after the Age of Fire and how to prepare for it. In the grand scheme of things, he's the hero of this world.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

...Really I'm just mad because I got him down to a fingernail-width of heath and died, and had to go back like five or six times to get the kill.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This is a DPS race/Stamina conservation fight. The best tip I could give anyone is to use fire resins, wack the crap out of his tail and keep his upper body in the corner of your eye to telegraph any upcoming attacks.
You don't want to get stuck in a swinging frenzy only to realize he's drawing his bow up to the air and you have no stamina left to outrun the arrow rain.

He'll usually teleport to the farthest opposite side of where he's at but sometimes he'll be in the middle of the arena during a teleport. Best thing to do in that scenario is run to the middle, reapply your buffs/top off heals and wait to see where he will show up. His moves and spells are easily dodged but the trouble comes up when the homing soul mass gets thrown into the mix. The only thing you can do in that scenario is unfortunately circle him and roll dodging the soul spears til you get a crappy opening. Eventually you'll get a good reset.

Almost any build can two hand a raw +6 dragonslayer axe that you get from the Creighton invasion by the Yorksha Chapel (if youre following the Sirris questline). By then you'll have the easterner's ashes for large titanite shards and the xanthous ashes for gold pine resins if you did irithyll dungeon before attempting him. He is weak to lightning as well and the damage output from that simple set up is insane for this fight. Wear the grass crest shield on your back + cloranthy ring + pontiff right eye ring = ez.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

His weakness to fire really can't be overstated. Doing this boss as a sorcerer vs. as a pyromancer is night and day.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        When does he ever talk?

                                                                                        • Anonymous

This is one of the most boring fights of this game, I really try to best this boss only when i need to acess the grand library

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I recommend using a fire straightsword +5, the dark crest shield, and the archdeacon set with firekeeper or any other gloves.

(I've tested this on two characters, probably the easiest melee way to destroy him, just stick close and circle around if he tries doing the arrow rain attack)

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

This boss fight felt personal. After playing DS1, when I realized I was at Anor Londo, I was ecstatic. But going through the place, seeing how the Deacons of the Deep twisted and desecrated it, then Aldrich has the gall to use the O&S boss room, on top of killing and devouring Gwyndolin, it all adds up to me genuinely feeling hate towards him and his followers.

                                                                                                • Anonymous
