Axes are a Weapon type in Dark Souls 3. Axes usually do decent damage and are best used on Strength/Quality builds. Most of the Axes have the Skill Warcry, which provides the weapon with a damage boost for 30 seconds. Axes are generally considered to be worse than Straight Swords, due to their lower attack speed and therefore lower damage per second, and having an arguably worse moveset and Skill spread.

However, Axes do have their own positives. Axes deal very high damage and stamina damage per hit relative to their speed.

Anything slower than a straight sword that doesn't have hyper armor to compensate with is generally going to lose against a straight sword, but that's only true as long as you refuse to stop using the r1. Warcry r2 gives a tiny bit of hyper armor, but just enough to punish r1 spam with twice the damage other trading weapons would do. A claymore would outpoise ss r1 for 150 ish more damage, but warcry-powered axes would get 180 - 210 damage, with slightly higher risk because warcry's timing is way less forgiving. Aside for trades, you might also want to parry and get a riposte damage normally reserved for ultra class weapons.

"Axes are generally considered to be worse than Straight Swords, due to their lower attack speed, weaker damage output" the hell? Comparing the strongest straight sword, the sunlight straight sword, with refined build to the millwood battle axe with refined build and on the same str/dex levels the axe does way more damage then the sword.

I feel like this weapon class was negatively impacted by the poise changes the most. Without passive poise, they're not fast enough to compete with straight swords, nor have enough hyperarmor to out-trade anything slower.

This means that straight-swords straight up outclassed them, and they have no options against daggers or even hammers, which are faster than axes AND have reliable hyperarmor when 2h.

I tried so hard to make the battleaxe and brigand axe work for me but... the strightswords are just so much better. The tiny step in poise damage the axes provide actually work AGAINST you when fighting things like dogs, as instead of hitting them with the follow up they flop away to safety lol

Probably the single worst weapon type in the game. Slower than Straight Sword, crappy reach and no Hyper Armor. Only partial exceptions are Butcher's Knife (for its silly reach, excellent scaling and neat Health Regen gimmick) and Winged Knight Twin Axes for Spin2Win.

No matter what you're looking for, there's a 90% chance another weapon does it better than Axes do.

I wish the Axes in this game felt as good as the ones in DS2.

Only thing that comes close is the Millwood. Bandit Axe, oh how I miss you.

Ive started using a lightning millwood axe in mainhand and the earthseeker in offhand on a 40/40 str fth build. The axe is great for rollspammers and the Greataxe has crazy hyperarmour. That in addition to the Warcraft r2s make it a really fun setup.

You can get the deep battle axe from the lothric wall when a monster chest appears when you kill it you get it

Seeing people saying that Warcry heavy attacks on weapons like the Battle Axe, Millwood Battle Axe, and Brigand Axe have hyper-armor, but I can't seem to get it to work. Does it exist, or do I not have enough poise?

Best axe? Currently using executioners sword because at one point my battle axe wasn't competing (first time playing btw)

Axes and hammers looks useless in pvp because of their high skill cap. Once mastered tho, there's really no way to punish them. Either hope they screw up or git gud.

                          • Anonymous

axes and maces got no love in the dlcs. at least axes got one new one in the dlc, but it is basicly just the battle axe with a slightly different warcry and better str scaling. maces didn't even get a new weapon in the dlcs.

                            • Anonymous

Use warcry + uncharged R2 to annihilate every foe in pvp. You even have hyper poise to trade with UGS - Users or stop the R1 - Spammers in this game. Millwood Axe is especially good for countering spammy or very resilient adversaries.

Do you guys think that the new axe shown in the 5 minutes gameplay trailer is going to be better than the man serpent hatchet or just having a new weapon art?

axes may not be overpowered (most of the stuff sucks) the thrall axe for example can decipate all kinds of ***** if you use it right, dragonslayers axe has good lightning damage for a light weapon and anything else here can be made useful if you know what your doing

                                  • Anonymous

Both axes and hammer class weapons don't interrupt enemy attacks in PvP, have lower swinging speed and moderate damage when compared to spam-swords, and to top it all they don't have hyper armor on their attacks making them trade inefficiently with already mentioned swords and other weapons. Hyper armor on R2s would have been nice at least. They can do well in PvP, but only if you land a parry or if your opponent is backed into a corner. In other cases, you are just handicaping yourself.

Tbh, not liking the variety of axes in this game, if anything greataxes are the best and have very good damage. Might as well go greataxes if you're building strength right?

Its found underneath the tower the fire breathing dragon sits on on hihgwall of lothric, in a mimc chest.Does dark damage.
