Blood Gem is an Upgrade Material in Dark Souls 3.

Blood Gem

blood gem

A gem of infused titanite. Slurped by Irithyll slaves.

Used in infusion to create lacerating weapons.

Such weapons inflict lacerating damage. Most effective with sharp or spiked weapons.

Blood Gem Usage

  • Used in Infusion to make lacerating weapons, which inflicts Bleed damage to susceptible foes.

Blood Gem Locations

  • Rare drop from Irithyllian Slaves (1%). To farm the gems, go to the Church of Yorshka bonfire. Equip farming gear, and simply kill all slaves as you head down the steps to the graveyard, through the very dark stable, and out above the water.
  • There is one located by a tree after the Church of Yorshka bonfire in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. Drop down the ledge to the right after the dark room filled with the Irithyllian Slaves. ()
  • In Painted World of Ariandel, found at the bottom of the rotted basement of Ariandel Chapel, guarded by numerous Giant Flies.

Notes

  • Requires the Profaned Coal in order to start infusing weapons.
  • Lacerating weapons cannot be buffed with spells or resins.
  • Increases bleed build up - effect seemingly varies from weapon to weapon.
  • The bleed buildup rate scales with the Luck stat and has a hard cap at 40.
  • Most effective on fast, poor scaling, and low damage weapons that already cause bleed, such as the Bandit's Knife and Warden Twinblades.

Infuse a weapon that already has innate Bleed, as this results in the highest bleed proc damage and also significantly helps build up bleeding. Carthus rouge on a hollow weapon will do more per hit with the weapon strikes, but it will take longer to bleed and won't bleed for as much. Because bleeding is based on a percentage of Max HP, it scales more effectively at higher level PvP, but even then most other builds will out-DPS you even if your bleed procs don't get rolled through, negating all the blood explosion damage.

Like the anon from 23 feb 21 said, this is a viable infusion, especially against large bosses that aren't immune to bleed (DS Armor) and in pvp against turtles. However it shouldn't ne your main tool.
Use a very fast weapon like the Bandit's Knife, it also has good defense due to its WA.

just to be clear, it IS better to use a blood gem on a bleed gem instead of using a poison gem right?... guys?

            • Anonymous

It's so sad what happened to bleed. I remember in ds1 it was a big deal. Having bleed proc from Priscilla's Dagger is so nasty

              • Anonymous

Why this wiki so lack of information? Weapon has bleed number 30-35 in their stats, what does that mean? Every strike caused 30+% bleeding buildup to the meter??? Or what???

Now, you might have used blood infusion in your game, done somewhat decently, then go on internet and read about how bleed infusion sucks and you shouldn't use it. How could this be, after all, you've done pretty well so far in pvp, and even beaten a game with it. Could other players just sleep on how good this infusion is?

Opinions on the internet are always taken to the extreme. If something's bad and not optimal in any scenario, it's "useless". In this case, bleed weapons, while they can be used to complete the game and compete in pvp, are always going to provide sub par performance compared to alternatives (with one notable exception). Let's look at an example involving some numbers.

You're a happy SL80 Mercenary, with 40 vigor, 30 endurance, and you've just hit 40 dexterity. You have a set of warden twinblades, blood infused +10, doing 219 damage per hit, and that sweet, sweet spin move that applies bleed faster. For the sake of argument we will assume a bleed occurs after 4 R1 hits, whether in PvE or PvP. In reality, with the exception of some specific PvE enemies, it will be more like 5-7 hits, but whatever. Meanwhile, your enemy has a typical defense 100, absorption 20% and exactly 1299 life (41 vigor, unembered, ring of favor +3).

You hit him 4 times. Each hit deals 95 damage, and you trigger a bleed for 15% of his life +200 bonus, thats 395 damage! You've done a great 775 total damage with 4 hits. If the bleeding hit was a counterhit, its 825 damage. Then you decide to pull out your sharp infused sellsword twinblades +10, which, at your stats, do 362 damage, buffable with a resin. That's... 838 damage with 4 connecting hits, and another 80 minimum if you apply any resin (minimum buff damage bonus +20), taking you to a total of 918. If your enemy has less life (many will), bleed will do even less damage, and if it takes more than 4 hits to bleed (which it usually will), bleed comes out even worse.

Now, that's still a small difference, and you could argue that the bleed meter alters enemy player's behaviour. Unfortunately... bleed damage can be rolled. Meaning if the enemy rolls the last hit, it will trigger bleed and waste the whole buildup, do no damage, and unlike frostbite, it has no additional effects. If the same happens on a sharp infusion, you simply lose 1 hit worth of damage. In case of bleed, your 3 hits will do only 285 damage, while with sharp, you've done 554 damage. In PvE, you can still bleed specific enemies like monstrosities of sin or demon prince somewhat reliably, but again, there's no real benefit to doing it aside from sexy bleedsplosions, while you lose consistent damage against all enemies.

There's one specific case where bleed infusion shines, however - against high stability greatshields, when your opponent repeatedly turtles and backs away. Bleed buildup and damage goes through shields and some players learn to rely on their greatshields far too much; you can use a bleed infused bandit dagger to punish this mentality.

So yeah, bleed isn't "useless", it's just, sadly, almost always the worse choice when compared to physical infusions, both in pve and pvp.

Can somebody explain to me what the fvck? Recently i made vleed build and in first 30 minutes in pvp i came upon 3 guys that weee completely imune to bleed weapons and i mean no damage at all from gits but when i switched to uninfused weapons i could hit them. Is this some sort of cheat?

                    • Does anyone know how this compares to the bleed added by Carthus Rouge? Both pages just said they vary by weapon.
I'm specifically thinking about the Bandit's Kive and Warden Twinblades. But it would be nice if there was a broad answer like "Carthus Rougue is always better but only by a little"

Makes me sad that I can't buff bleed infused weapons with Frozen Weapon. Would've been a nice boss destroyer.

You know when you think about all the infusions in ds3 in it's entirety, blood infusions are the worst possible infusion one can get, even more then hollow. First of all, the amount of bleed build up on any weapon, no matter if it's +10 or not, is pretty minimal. 72 bleed = over 7 hits for a bleed perk for me during a pvp session ( Mind you i was pretty cumbersome at it, but that's still no excuse for the amount of hits required to bleed an average player, with a bloodbite ring on, i presume). Second of all, is that you need a tremendous amount of luck for the bleed perk to actually increase, and luck isn't usually stat used for increasing dmg. And it's not the stat investment that kills the experience of using a bleed weapon build, gathering souls and spending then level by level is a necessity for any build for accumulating more dmg/dps, but the simple fact that every weapon infused with blood will ALWAYS get a D in STR and DEX, as well as a lowered base dmg. and that will obviously mean, you will need more hits to: A. KIlls things in general B. Get the bleed perk, which isn't necessarily guaranteed for every mob, as we know. All of this cobined meaning that, in reality, you are just wasting more souls for a status effect that requires more hits on an enemy to perk the effect, as well as doing far form adaquete or comparible dmg to other more promising builds. more grinding for less AR and pure chance of a status effect perk..hmmm ill pass. Im not hating, i just feel that... blood infusions are very under-powered, and are more circumstantial then a normality when it comes down to PVP as well as PVE. The same with hollow builds as well, except keen difference being is that the base dmg and scaling isn't too bad for those builds, and increasing ones hollowing doesn't require soul investment so yeah.

So I was infusing my Wardens with a blood gem and I looked at the poison can just to see what it would look like and it kind of blew my mind. My character has 40 luck with a hollow parma sheild, and my Warden's were +9. The poison gem actually upped the poison AND the bleed, giving me 42 bleed and 78 poison. I didnt do it yet, because I want to try it on my other Wardens that I havent upgraded yet, but that seems Kinda OP somebody please confirm this

I can't seem to be able to infuse the bandit's knife with the blood gem anymore... I have 6 blood gems and a Bandit's knife+6 for now. I haven't played the game for about a year and idk if they made the blood infusing imposible for items that already had bleed on them. If asking, yes, i have given the Profaned coal to Andre. Can anyone help me please?

Highest bleed I’ve managed is with 70 luck (max cap for bleed change from testing) with a blood gem on a Carthus Greatsword. Managed 109 bleed per hit, which bleeds even resistant bosses fairly well

In case anyone sees this, I'm still trying to figure out whether a bleed infusion or a hollow infusion are better for the buildup. Obviously I'm going to be putting quite a bit of points into luck, but what infusion is going to scale better with that on a bleed build? Or is it going to be more dependent on which weapon I'm infusing than anything else? Any advice would be appreciated.

                                  • Anonymous

Bleed buildup is not hard capped at 40 luck, this is outdated info.

Buildup scales all the way to 99 luck since 1.11, however you get extremely little returns after 50.

This gem should improve dex scaling to a minor degree. Would offset the dmg loss and make it more viable

Wether you want to use infusion vs buff is a simple matter of your playstyle. If you intend to swap weapons a lot then dont use the rouge since you will limit yourself. Otherwise if you intend to use a main weapn only by all means use the buff :)

                                        • Anonymous

Still useless in pvp compared to sharp, heavy or refined infusions as it basically cuts your weapons damage in half. Bleed also still has the issue of not dealing any damage half the time when it does proc due to rolls cancelling damage for some stupid reason.

                                          • So, I have a question, and it may sound silly to some or obvious to others, but does the Luck stat do anything for this gem or that of the poison gems?

I ask cause it's the first time I am using a build centered around bleeding (though after the recent patch I hear bleeding got nerfed? idk) and so I don't know much about the status gems. I know that Luck is supposed to help increase the build up for Bleeding and Poison, but how much exactly does Luck increase it by?

I have Luck on my character because I foolishly thought that Anri's Straight Sword had Bleed on it (I mistook the critical symbol for bleed...oops) and since I hear that bleed has been nerfed in terms of Carthus Rouge and Hollow, and you can't make Anri's sword blood...that kinda screws up my plans a bit.

So now I'm using Warden Twinblades currently (which I hear also sorta fell off being good? but they're the only ones that really go/feel right for my build) and I haven't really noticed any huge leaps and bounds with the bleed aux with my Luck stat nor have I really noticed myself bleeding any enemies or npc phantoms or anything. But I then made them poison (took a bit of a hit to my damage, but RIP. My damage was***** already anyways) and I poison faster than I bleed people. Unless the damage is SO SMALL on the bleed that it doesn't even matter...either that or enemies bleed meters run out a hell of a lot faster than ours. :|

Anyways, if anyone could answer if Luck is worth it or if I should completely respec elsewhere that'd be great. Thanks.

This gem is now amazing as well as the poison gem. Someone should add the location of the gem in the DLC. The painted world, beneath the chapel on the lowest level with the giant flies, it's in the middle of the room

I'm making a bleed build that uses both claws and manikin claws, one in each hand, so I can swap weapon arts as needed and parry as well. I just 2 hand whichever is better at tthe moment. Because of constant and rapid switching, do u think using hollow gem and carthus buff would bad? I'm determining whether to use hollow gem or blood gem.

                                                • Anonymous

This gem is crap. On weapons with already high bleed the increase is negligible and it prevents other buffs. Much Better to go with hollow and the carthus resin that increases bleed. (And a high luck stat)

                                                  • Anonymous

This gem does increase bleed proc...just tested the carthus sword on the 8 legged cage guy. it took 4 hits to proc bleed with standard. right after i did that i infused with the blood gem and it only took me three hits to proc bleed on those guys

Anyone know how much this infusion increases bleed? does it increase bleed build up on weapons that already bleed? if then how much? I'm thinking of making a ninja build that has high luck and dex. Trying to figure if bleed infuse is worth it or if I should just go with Hollow infusion. (50 luck with 40 dex)
