Cemetery of Ash is a Location in Dark Souls 3. This location serves as a starting area for new players to the game. This is where players will find themselves at the start of the game, revived as an 'Unkindled', and will have to face the mighty Iudex Gundyr as a test to prove their worth before heading into Firelink Shrine and being able to explore the lands of Lothric.

Getting Your Feet Under You

After character creation, the game begins with an introductory cutscene of your player character rising from a tombstone. Proceed forward and read the messages on the ground which provide instructions on the game's Controls.

Follow the path to find your first enemy. After disposing of him, go right and loot a Soul of a Deserted Corpse. Backtrack to where you found the first enemy and proceed to encounter another enemy in front of a soul-vessel-like fountain. Loot the corpse by the fountain to obtain the Ashen Estus Flask.

Progressing Through The Cemetery

To the right and up, there is a hollow facing away from you. To the left and up the stairs you will find another hollow. If you continue straight past the fountain, you will encounter a hollow with a crossbow. Taking a hard right from where this hollow is, you will see 2 more hollows. As you progress past them down a narrow waist-high waterway, it will open to a wider area where a Ravenous Crystal Lizard waits. Soul of an Unknown Traveler 1x can be located in this area (Speckled Stoneplate Ring +1 can also be found here in NG+). Defeat the Crystal Lizard to obtain a Titanite Scale 1x. He can be led to the edge by the bonfire to quickly defeat him by making him step/roll off.

Make your way back and continue on to reach a cliffside overlooking a breathtaking view. Head left and you will encounter your first Bonfire. Light the bonfire to trigger the Enkindle Trophy/Achievement and learn the Gesture Rest. Continue ahead along the cliff wall, eliminating the hollows in your path. At the edge, a message will tell you how to jump. Jumping here into a small ravine, you can find a Titanite Shard 1x. If you drop down beyond there will be a hollow you can land a jump attack on. It has a chance to drop a Cleric's Sacred Chime. If you backtrack and follow along the cliff edge, you will encounter several hollows and a path leading down along the cliff. At the end of the path you will find a sword and shield hollow and a crossbow hollow. Behind them, against the wall will be a corpse with Firebomb 5x.

In an archway ahead, eliminate the crossbow hollow and enter an open courtyard where you will see a petrified warrior. Approach it.

Boss Fight: Iudex Gundyr

Make your way forward and head down the stone steps that open up to a courtyard where you see the statue of a figure with a sword embedded in its chest. Approach the statue and you are given a prompt to remove the sword. Remove it to animate the statue and test your worth against the boss, Iudex Gundyr

Iudex Gundyr

Defeat him to receive the Coiled Sword and earn the Trophy/Achievement Iudex Gundyr. Your ember will now be restored, which is similar to the revival mechanic in Demon's Souls.

Open the large double doors and proceed to the next location, Firelink Shrine.

When I started the game, I never went to get that estus shard on cemetery of ash then returned late game and there was no estus shard in that location, what the hell?

So many cursed cliffs to fall off of, never learn to roll here, or you gonna take a cannonball into the clouds.

Is it just me or does the giant coffin in Ludex Gundyr’s room look a lot like the Coffin Nito hops out of?

          • Anonymous

The Elite Knight corpse was the warrior who beat Champion Gundyr, but he then had no where to go as the bonfire in the Shrine was broken, he collapsed and died in the cemetery and over time his estus flask turned cold. Or perhaps is it just another DS1 Throwback with no meaning? It is? Oh..

How to get rich and level up 3-8 times (depends on class). Start with any class (Deprived for maximum level effect) and select the Sovereignless Soul (2000 souls). Proceeding before getting the Ashen Estus Flask, on your right will be a Soul of a Deserted Corpse (200 souls). Proceed to kill every enemy (don't kill the Ravenous Crystal Lizard yet) and head to Gundyr. Kill Gundyr (3000 souls) and proceed to the Firelink Shrine. Go to the tower behind the shrine for another Soul of a Deserted Corpse (200 souls) and trick jump the tree in order to get to the roof. Grab that Estus Shard and destroy an illusion wall. Continue until you fall down into an area with a chest with the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring (10% extra souls). Go to back to the first bonfire lit (before Gundyr) and kill the Ravenous Crystal Lizard and gather the Soul of an Unknown Traveler (5200 souls + Titanite Scale). Go back to the Firelink Shrine and near the Sword Master are 2 collectable embers. Go to the Shrine Handmaid and sell those for 2000 souls. Now you are ready to fight the Sword Master for 2200 souls. If done these steps correctly without spending them or losing them, you will have 14800 souls + enemy kills. If you chose Deprived, and followed these steps, you'll be able to level up 16 times.

Any way to get the armor from the enemies? The very first hollows. I'm trying to cosplay as Maria Calavera from RWBY and i think their armor would look nice but I can't find a way to get that set or a part of it.

Why did the corpse that the ashen estus flask is on remind me of Anri?it's an elite knight with a crest shield

This is a duplicate page, also the General Information contains racism.

Something strange about the hollow looking out in the distance.
When i attacked him, he threw some weird brown thing at me that sounded like a clay pot. anybody know what that is?

                      • Anonymous

The hollow overlooking the cliff: I threw a throwing knife at it and it turned around and ran circles around me. I've done this a few times and it wigs out each time (guess it's AI always thought it'd be kicked off).

hmm, the corpse that gives you the ashen flask is wearing the elite knight armor, just like oscar in 1, who gives you the estus flask, coincidence?

the best way to defeat the katana man is lure him as far away as possible, and when he turns around, rush him, then jump back. Just do this until he dies

                            • Anonymous

If you go around to the right side of Firelink, just at the cliff, next to the ember. There is man kneeling before a grave, on the grave is a Wolf Knight's Greatsword. He says "The poor, wretched souls..." "Be they lord or legend, the curse shows no mercy." "What a sham."

                              • Anonymous

When you battle the boss for the first time pull the sword out to start the battle then hit the statue before his health bar appears, you will be able to deal an OK amount of damage without being hit.

                                • There is one peculiar thing about this starting location. If you make your first right after your first spawning, there will be a soul. But if you look up above, there is a cavern. There is no way to access it without hacks yet, and Untended Graves is another area. It is leading somewhere (or nowhere at all: From style), as you can clearly see Lothric Castle through it if you make a pair steps back. I really wish it was a future secret.

                                  • Because the end of this area is contiguous with the Firelink Shrine, we have duplicate information regarding items like the East West shield and Sword Master Saber.

The dog that's guarding the ember near Firelink Shrine, I could swear my game had an NPC instead. He kept saying something about the ember. Anyone else witnessed this?

                                      • i'm having a really hard time with him lolsure this is my first dark souls game but i ran through bloodborne multiple times. problem is the parry, those functions worked completely different in these games and i can't seem to get my parry's to work consistently, every now and then i'm lucky and get one but that's it
