Crow Quills is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3. It is part of the Ashes of Ariandel DLC.

Thrusting sword wielded by Corvian Knights, and a special paired weapon. When twin-handed, brandish four thin-edge blades in the left hand.

In their infatuation with Sister Friede, the Corvian Knights swore to protect the painting from fire, and to this end, took to the execution of their own brethren.

Skill: Quill Dart

Simultaneously throw temporarily substantial illusions of the four thin-edged blades wielded in the left hand.

Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed.
  • Reinforce with Titanite.
  • This weapon is best used on a Dex build.
  • Sharp infusion gets S Dex scaling with 373 AR at 9/40 STR/DEX.
  • This weapon has high critical rating, it is optimal for ripostes/backstabs.
  • When Two-Handing, the left hand backstep and run attacks have a leaping animation.
  • During the Weapon Art, after the quills have been thrown, if R2 is pressed, it triggers a followup thrust, similar to the charge Weapon Art
  • LB/L1 second attack - the triple thrust can also be chained from a single RB/R1. The LB/L1 finisher can be chained from a double RB/R1. All in all the LB/L1 combo is 7 attacks (2 horizontal swipes, 3 thrusts, into a backhand swipe then thrust)
  • Weapon Art Quills throw in a wide arc, best if used up close to hit all quills

Location/Where to Find

  • Painted World of Ariandel: From the Corvian Settlement Bonfire head out and across the bridge. Follow the wall of the house on your left until you see a smaller bridge. Go across and follow the path to the left. On your left you will see two entrances across a small gap. jump it and go into the house on your right. Barrels will be blocking a platform that you need to run and leap off of and land on the elevated platform with the Crow Quills.

Buffing this with resins will only apply the damage to the rapier BUT the claws will still inherit the elements properties. So if you apply fire, hitting fire weak enemies with the claws will make them flail around. Wth fromsoft?

I have three fav weapons, this being one of them, as well as Dragonslayer Axe with either lightning or chaos infusion, and Dragonslayer Swordspear. 11/10 once upgraded, I'm using it in endgame and is still super cool. Definitely recommend for anyone to try.

        • Anonymous

Simple only has 20 less AR than Crystal at both 40/60 and 40/40 dex/int. Do with this information what you will.

          • Anonymous

Pretty easy to get early after beating the crystal sage. The hardest part is getting past the corvian knight and climbing up the ladder. Level up to at least 20 vigor and be embered and you should have enough health while suicide running.

            • Anonymous

This weapon does not work well with buffs imo. When buffed, the dmg increase only applies to the rapier attacks (quills remain unbuffed). Even though the dmg does not change, fire buffs cause enemies's fire-death animation when attacked with the quill-swipes (i do not know if this stops dogs and other such enemies, if they survive). the quill-darts will not show any difference, if you compare buffed with unbuffed.
I think Crow Quills are best in a pyromancer / hexer setup with a chaos-infusion. It will make every attack cause fire damage and therefore you can use the Quill-Darts to fire-stun enemies. I also get better results with crit. hits, but that might be because usually i never go beyond 40 dex.
Moveset is just great, it is one weapon for most situations.

              • Anonymous

came across an invader using this. now, i'm pretty bad at pvp, but as long as you're not predictable as that guy when using the weapon art you'll do fine

                • Anonymous

+10 with sharp scaling has interesting ar gains.

                  35-40: +10 AR
                  40-45: +7 AR
                  45-50: +7 AR
                  50-55: +6 AR
                  55-60: +4 AR
                  60-65: +12 AR
                  65-70: +11 AR
                  70-75: +8 AR
                  75-80: +7 AR
                  80-85: +6 AR
                  85-90: +4 AR
                  90-94: +2 AR

This thing has one of the most varied movesets in the game, perhaps the most varied. Want to shield poke people? No problem, equip a shield in your off-hand and poke away at stuff! Do you like alternative kick attacks for variety?? This weapon has an altered kick attack like other rapiers. Do you enjoy paired weapons??? 2 hand this thing and experience the glory and absolute style of the paired attacks. Do you like throwing darts at people but want to keep it simple and avoid equipping throwables in your precious slots????? Use the weapon art and throw away your daggers (and FP) to your heart's content, follow it up with an R2 for a powerful thrusting lunge. Do you like keeping it simple with R1's and R2's? You can R1 spam your way through the game with this thing if you want.

                    • Anonymous

The weapon art for this EXCELLS at finishing off low health players especially ones with tears of denial, plus you look really cool while doing it B)

                      • Anonymous

Extremely cool weapon that not a lot of people seem to be running in PVP anymore despite the fact it can be accessed relatively early, I guess mainly because it's hidden in such an obscure location that a lot of players legit don't know where it is. But this is actually not a bad one at all.

                        • Anonymous

I've noticed that there is a quite alot of poise on its running L1, and back step attack, perfect for trading attacks idk if it can trade ultra and greatswords but it can trade up to halberds at 27 poise

                          • Anonymous

I was using this while fighting persevearance spammer and either I was lucky or L1s don't bounce off which is awesome.

                            • Anonymous

I just chaos infused this for A scaling in int and faith? With a B in dex? Does anything else in the game scale like this?

                              • Anonymous

I'm awful at PvP so I generally avoided it until I found the Crow Quills. I'm still awful but this weapon is so much fun to use. It's rare for me but actually landing a Backstep L1-R1-L1 is satisfying as heck

                                • Anonymous

genuinely love this weapon. I'd been getting through the game mostly with the astora great sword, which is a great weapon, but I tried this one out on a whim after I found it and it's just so much more fun imo. I love the moveset, catching people in the r1 l1 combo is so satisfying. been doing a lot of invasions with it too, and they're more challenging for sure, but also very fun and super satisfying to get the win. learning it has been a blast, fully in love, highly recommend.

                                  • Anonymous

When using this weapon buffed or infused with elemental damage, does the “throwing quill” weapon art also deal elemental damage to enemies?

                                    • Anonymous

Dear scrubs, stop trying to poke pro with this harmless stick, you're just not hitting anyone cuz this sword's moveset sucks asssszz. Damnn, I really don't have to tell you the horrible result of bringing this shite up against a pro pkcs player...It would be a stream of shhit coming at you.

                                      • Anonymous

"In their infatuation with Sister Friede, the Corvian Knights swore to protect the painting from fire"... Oh my.

                                        • Anonymous

is it just me or does the effect of the weapon art look diffirent with infusions? on a refined infused cq the knife throw is just a plain knife throw is just a plain knife throw but on a lightning build it has a yellow flash before hand can anybody confirm?

                                          • Anonymous

Do resins increase damage on the weapon art? If so, because resins aren't percentage increases like buffs, would this greatly increase damage if all of them hit?

                                            • Anonymous

Ngl in the right hands this weapon is great in PvP. While it might be off meta, it can really shine. People complaining about shields, use the running jump attack w/ hyper armor and it breaks shields like no other (I also use sharp Carthus Shotel for Greatshield tanks), you can use the throwing knives to interrupt rolls and heals to keep on the offensive or even provide an opening for attack against great weapons, and if you get someone close enough with little armor, they melt under stun lock and pure ar dealt.

Let's just say, I've won against every player that has ever used crow quills, ever. I'm sure I'm not the only one either.
Using weapons like this is like insulting your opponents intelligence by thinking they'll be stupid enough to even get hit by a single move this weapon can do

                                                • Anonymous

This is a great weapon for Darkmoon Blade. The trick with buff builds is that it's rather easy to wait out the buff, and so you need to choose weapons that are good at pressuring, and also weapons that would benefit from the buff more so than just innate elemental damage from infusions. Spears and rapiers fill that niche really nicely because spears and rapiers are pretty good at pressuring because of their running R1s and roll-catching capabilities, respectively, and, more importantly, they would lose a lot of counter damage (especially with Leo Ring) as counter damage is calculated strictly from your "Thrust" AR and not your elemental infusion AR.

                                                  • Anonymous

Not sure why the Sharp infusion is using 18/50 for ar calc, such a weird stat allocation. With sharp its str scaling is so bad Id go as little above 9. 9/40 sharp, 373 AR. 9/60 sharp 397 AR.

                                                          • Anonymous

Sadly parrying destroys this weapon in pvp. A decent parry user will have barely any problems against this weapon.

                                                            • Anonymous

The damage table is not updated. So interestingly, this weapon infused with a simple gem or a blessed gem has a slight bonus for the base physical damage. They have a Superior base physical damage than their counterparts (here simple>chaos/dark and blessed>Crystal/Lightning, normally their base physical damage is equal).

What happens when you use the weapon art with the crow quills in the right hand and a weapon art shield in the left?

                                                                • Anonymous

They recently buffed this weapon: the cone for the throwing knife WA is much narrower and you have a better chance of landing multiple knives for better damage and the L1/throwing knives now carry whatever buff you put on the rapier too (it wouldn't before).

                                                                  • Anonymous

Can the quills be used to inflict debuffs and cause build-up? So far I've tested with the frost weapon spell and while melee attacks inflict frostbite no matter how much I spam the quill attack it doesn't build up then. Such an ability to build up debuffs would be great for a bleed build, I feel.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I'm planning a DEX/FTH regen build that can fast roll, and surprisingly, this is great on lightning and blessed infusion.

                                                                      • Anonymous

couldn't make it work. It is useless against shields, you can't even perform a kick and the blade is damn short. Estoc and Irithyl Rapier are the better alternatives.

                                                                        • Been running with Spear/Shield Counter builds. Need a Rapier in my arsenal. Despite the fact it actually a "A" on Heavy +10, it gets a couple more AR on Refined C/C with 50 Str/20 Dex. Meaning the A on Heavy is a lie despite the game showing it. I don't recommend using this on a Str build.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Dark Build (Blindfold Mask[+5% Dark melee] and Dark Clutch Ring[+15% all Dark] {+20% Total Dark Damage}): Sharp Crow Quills +10, 12/50 str/dex (387physical) + Human Pine Resin (95dark*1.2=114) = 501 AR Dark Crow Quills +10, 12/16/40/40 str/dex/int/fth (131physical + [311dark*1.2=173.2]) = 504.2 AR Almost identical, except Quill Darts only gain damage from infusions, not buffs, and 40/40 int/fth let's you use most spells. However Sharp is more skill point efficient, using 36 points to get 12/50 str/dex if you start Mercenary (save 2 points by going 10/50). If you want to use Tears of Denial, that's 7 more points for fth (41 total). Starting as a Pyromancer (me), 12/16/40/40 costs 59 points. If you are pure melee, go with a Dex build, giving you more points for Vigor and Endurance, and Human Pine Resin gives you a total 482 AR if you don't want to compromise absorption with dark rings. If you want to use spells along with melee, go with a Dark build and be the glass cannon you always dreamed of!

                                                                            • Anonymous

I tried with chaos because have E B A A scalings in the last patch, the ranged weapon art do elemental damage even when it throws the knives, so i had fun with stupid cancer dogs rolling on the floor

                                                                              • Anonymous

This weapon is among my favorites for Dexterity builds. It takes a lot to truly master with its barious unique moves and properties, but shines in 1v1 against most builds if you’re smart about using it. Its weakness, I have found, is in multiple-opponent situations and parry-baiting, the latter only if you are too aggressive.

Overall it is a weapon best used to wittle down and weaken the opponent, not overpower them. For raw damage, I reccomend having a Chaos Blade or Sharp Corvian Great Scythe on hand as well.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Does anyone happen to know that if this weapon is infused with bleed or poison if the quills will carry that property with them when thrown? It's been stated that it will carry, say, a chaos fire infusion (but not a resin), but I'm more curious about the ranged bleed potential..

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

If you buff your weapon (say, for instance, Carthus Flame Arc), the thrown quills will NOT carry the elemental buff (that is to say, no fire quills). But if you infuse your weapon, the thrown quills will (for instance, a Chaos Crow Quills will do fire damage with flung quills). It should also be noted that said flaming quills can detonate explosive barrels.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Stay away from initiating combos with L1, since the quills themselves have piss-poor range and little stagger. You have to be right up in the opponent's face for them to hit, and even then they do pretty minimal damage at max upgrade and infusion. In fact, be extremely cautious using L1 chains in general, since they leave you wide open to be parried.

The WA's R2 follow-up is also easy for opponents to parry, since the quills themselves are a dead giveaway as to your intentions. Try throwing multiple volleys in succession before following through (like a bona fide Corvian Knight), but even then you have to be careful the enemy doesn't come bounding after you before you land again, or worse, that they don't spam their Chaos Bed Vestiges.

It's definitely a tough weapon to master, but I'd say it's fairly rewarding. If you don't like dawdling in drawn-out fights and would rather combo someone under controlled conditions, you'll love the Crow Quills. But, if you're a little overzealous and often forget parrying is a thing like I do when wielding this weapon... Well, hang on to your estoc...

                                                                                        • (Xb1) So somehow I managed to miss both the crow quills and the crow talons and just started ng+ I'm and the road to sacrifice if anyone could supply a pair could you message me and hopefully we can figure something out I got a lot of maxed or close to maxed ringed city str weapons I'm willing to part with if it helps lvl doesn't matter

                                                                                          • This weapon is one of the best for dex builds in PvP, the WA is so very useful. But it's outclassed by almost every other top tier dex weapons for PvE. The range is just not good (in fact it's mediocre) and the WA is useless against enemies (although still very good for invasions). Estoc is a far superior PvE option than (the range for Estoc makes it wayy better), then there are superior weapons like Sellsword/Warden Twinblades.Sharp Astora GS, Lothric Knight SS etc.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

This weapon is probably the funniest and one of the strongest I ever playes, it had tons of different move and it's really versatile.
I still need to try if the hawk ring can make the weapon move any better but only with the Pontiff's Right Eye ring you already got really good damage.
You can OS anyone in one combo if well executed.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I feel like it has some wasted potential. The dmg is ok but some of the ways it works are stupid. During the WA jump the hitbox stays down and if you get hit you fall. The same thing happens with the running L1 (pogo jump like attack) and it constantly misses (once i landed inside the enemy and i "missed" and he still got the hit despite me being behind the handle of his weapon, stopped using it ever since). The only solution i came up with is that during the WA you either get i-frames or you take 80% less dmg from horizontal attacks and poise through them no matter the weapon but vertical strikes still dmg you normally and you get poise broken, also hitting all of the throwing knifes at close range will stun the target for the R2 follow up. The running L1 will still get the same treatment but instead of the normal hitbox the enemy will have a rounded hitbox and if you land in it you get a critcal-like animation of you landing on the head during witch you are invincible to dmg (hornet ring extra dmg or not i dont know) just like the NPCs(corvian knights) do.The length of the weapon is also to small for a thrusting weapon. Maybe increase the range just a bit aswell or something. I like it but i feel they rushed during the creation of this weapon.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

the info is a bit wrong here. It's talking about a lack of bonus AR when 2 handing it proving the lack of need for str investment. You would never get bonus str AR anyway because this is not a single weapon you can 2-hand. It's a dual-wielding weapon, like the sellsword twinblades, caestus, onikiri etc. none of these get bonus str AR because they are dual wielding weapons. The Crow Quills is no different. When you 2-hand it, its a dual wielding weapon consisting of a thrusting sword & a series of throwing knives that double up as a claw when using the L1 move. 2-handing this weapon does not prove anything around str scaling, it's completely irrelevant.

It might be worth someone changing this in the info above

You can follow up an L2 with an R2 to execute a long range thrust (it consumes additional FP though). The L1 run attack also grants hyperarmor.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Lightning blade buff works well and the skill is good to harass and just mess with opponents. Refined +10 works for me, not much damage but when used correctly can have many quick combos. Recommend for all dex builds.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

For those who are wondering if the Quill Toss (WA) works with bleed, poison, etc... No, It doesn't. Tested using poison on some random hollow (Axe guy near the Lotheric Castle, Dragon Barracks bonfire): 3 normal (R1) hits with the sword poisoned the targeted. Reset and used only quill toss: ~36 hits in 30 seconds (36 = each quill that hit... a total of 11 tosses were made in the test), no poison, to check if any buildup preformed normal (R1) attacks until poison and it still took 3 hits.
