Crucifix of the Mad King is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3. It was added with The Ringed City DLC.

A cross spear hung with a malformed corpse.

Once, a mad king was born to the pygmy royalty and Shira, knight of Filianore, put him to rest. But Shira's cross spear, unable to kill the undying king, only pinned itself to him. Shira delivered them together to the darkroom, where she stayed and held them close.

Skill: Mad King's Folly
Slam malformed corpse into the ground to briefly awaken it, then fillet with strong attack to trigger a roar, a blessing, or vexation.

Notes and Tips:

  • Upgrades with Twinkling Titanite. Cannot be Infused.
  • This weapon IS buffable, despite having scaling dark damage. It performs exceptionally well with the Dark Blade buff.
  • Both the physical and dark damage scale with Faith. This means that each point in Faith is effectively worth twice what its D scaling would imply, and the weapon's AR will benefit more from it than from Strength.
  • Its R2s are the same as the Great Club's, and are good for dealing with groups of enemies or catching rolls.
  • True to the weapon's description, any time the weapon art is performed it will randomly trigger one of the three effects mentioned: The roar is kind of an AoE blast that covers your front and sides, the blessing gives an effect similar to that of Perseverance, and the vexation will spawn a small floating sphere that will follow you around, then explodes, dealing Dark damage to anything caught in its blast, including you. The blast can be dodged with a timely roll.
  • Interestingly, it seems that Shira never triggers the vexation effect when she's using this weapon.
  • At 99 Strength, Intelligence, and Faith with the Dark Clutch Ring, one has 666 Attack Rating.

      Low level build concept:
      Twink out a pyromancer (seems to be the most efficient starting class.) with priestess ring, knight ring, prisoner's chain, ring of favor +3, dark set (for flavor mainly but the poise affords decent trading capabilities), Crucifix of the Mad King, blessed caestus, priest's chime, maybe a handful of souls and a couple dark hands.
      SL 35
      Vig 27
      Att 14
      End 20
      Vit 13

      Dex. 9
      Int. 14
      Fa. 25
      Lck. 7
      (Stats post ring adjust)
      Spells: Dark Blade, Deep Protection.
      It's not ideal for cheap twink invasions in lothric but it's overpowered just enough to compensate for gank squads and the dark defense from faith presents a modest counter to the standard dark hand twink. Good for undead settlement, road of sacrifice, cathedral, farron keep, and catacombs invasions.

        Hey guys, many players do not know it, but that first slam of WA itself does damage to players. However, I wonder - is it parriable? Thank you.

          this thing destroys phantoms in almost 2 hits with dark blade buff and any of its combos. gotta love Froms blatant overpowered dlc weapon policy to incentivise people to buy them ^^

              My first time testing this weapon in firelink, I got the vexation weapon art about 10-15 times in a row. I actually got bored and quit using it because I thought I was doing something wrong to get it so many times in a row.

              Maybe I was just unlucky?

                Still dont understand why this weapon has so much Hyper Armor, Its literally a spear with bones on top of it (which in reality are not so heavy). Maybe on some attacks it shouldnt even exist. Like the WA is putting the thing in front of yourself why does that poise through attacks? Use it if you want easy wins.

                  Does the Luck stat have any effect on the RNG of the weapon art thing? IE if you have a high luck stat, does it actually decrease the chance of getting Vexation?

                    The only thing I hate about this weapon is that it has Greatsword hyper armor. I'm just jelly that my poor Gundyrs Halberd still has that pitiful Halberd hyper armor...

                      So does this weapon do standard and strike at the same time or only the r2's do strike damage or how exactly does this thing work

                        Gets decent physical at +5, the faith scaling does very good for miracles or pyromancies so it's a good weapon to keep in your arsenal

                          Literally the worst weapon to use in invasions.
                          1) It scales poorly with STR and doesn't scale with DEX, so it is purely a caster weapon;
                          2) As a caster this weapon is insanely bad, because your damage would come from spells and this thing have pretty terrible scalings of INT and FTH;
                          3) WA is random and literally the worst these is. You can get either tiny weak AOE, perseverance or kill-your-self bomb. The most horrid thing is that you usually never get what you need at that moment;
                          4) Kill-your-self-bomb is just that: you get this random effect and you kill yourself: either you get killed by the bomb or you roll and get punished by the opponent and you die. You better of just jumping to your death than using this weapon;
                          5) Can't be infused and buffs does not make it any better, you are better off using any other weapon (Onyx blade for example);
                          6) Weak physical damage despite requiring 19 STR. If you are a caster, then STR is the most useless stat you could get;

                          Overall, if you like suiciding with style, then pick this weapon. If you want a good weapon - avoid this one like plague.

                            They gave this thing Greatsword hyper armor. Which means I can wear heavy armor and actually poise through larger weapons. Yet I still can't be full Gundyr and poise through Greatswords with Gundyrs Halberd.

                            I wonder what goes through their heads when they make these decisions.

                              Use this thing with dark hand as a backup for those pesky dagger users, and you'll basically just be able to outdo almost everything in speed, damage, and range. Add in lightning arrow for versatility.

                                I have been using this weapon recently and honestly, it might be one of the best weapons out there. I don't even have enough attunement slots for lightning arrow at SL125, and still it's very versatile and does huge damage. This weapon seems to have more hyperarmor than the other glaives, because at 39 poise I sometimes through through the hits of ultra great weapons, and I can poise through the ringed knight paired greatswords by spamming l2. Contrary to popular belief, the r2 follow up of the weapon art is not advised. The 3 blessings make little to no difference for glaive users, as we already have poise, already do more damage than the roar with the followup r1 roll catch instead, and the bomb is practically a suicide bomb for Hail Marys. Ultra great weapons get outspaced, even Leo ring trades with spears are in your favor because of the huge AR, and all straight sword and curved sword users can do is roll around and pray they land a backstab (which is avoided simply by walking in the opposite direction of the backstab). The only real counter would be daggers, as I've tested with a friend and one handed daggers can do 1 hit in between glaive strikes and they can quickstep right before the glaive hits them.

                                  Insanely good weapon. L2 comes out really fast and has a ton of hyper armor, standard halberd R1's with the range of halberds, Great Club R2's, and the poise health/damage of greatswords. Also buff with Dark Blade for obnoxious AR.

                                    Wouldn't Darkmoon Blade be better for this? since u get a higher AR or am i missing something why people choose Dark Blade over it.
                                    Also, how much STR/FTH should I run for this weapon? I'm currently 40STR/50FTH.

                                      To avoid the vexation explosion, watch for the orb growing and shaking/pulsing, and roll right as it blows up- roll too early and the explosion hits you despite your roll as the explosion signifies when it's not stuck to you anymore.

                                        Two topics to cover, one for countering the Crucifix, another for maxing the Crucifix.

                                        First: To the whiners who think this thing is OP:

                                        Use your eyes. Halberds telegraph their movesets like few other weapons do. Is the Crucifix being raised overhead? Then it's a vertical lunge and dodging to the side, or BEHIND your opponent, foils the attack. Is the Crucifix being swung outwards and wide? Then it's a horizontal sweep, and dodge rolling back, or BEHIND your opponent, foils the attack.

                                        This weapon is stupidly predictable, and surprisingly easy to exploit backstabs on your opponent, should you time your rolls BEHIND the the wielder. Another thing: OP AR?

                                        Please, my Great Mace with Lightning Weapon buff hits WAY harder than this thing. And that's just the Great mace. Don't even get me started on the Greatsword's miracle buffed AR.

                                        Finally, on meta build notes?

                                        Seems that the STR hard cap for this weapon is 40, while the Faith scaling shares a similar hard cap (Faith scaling on this weapon is weird, and apparent hard caps aren't actually hard caps). Testing with 50 STR/40 FTH netted 560 AR one handed. 40 STR/50 FTH netted 562 AR one handed. The INT scaling isn't even worth the investment, as the hard cap for INT appears to be 12.

                                        Given that miracles (Dark Blade) also scale with Faith, anyone looking to specialize in the Crucifix should focus on Faith over Strength, and completely forgo the Intelligence stat as anything other than a prerequisite investment.
