Crystal Chime is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

A sacred chime, once the possession of Gertrude, the Heavenly Daughter, and defiled by the scholars of the Grand Archives.

The power of crystals granted the scholars a degree of success. In this case, their work enabled this chime to be suitable for casting both miracles and sorceries.

Skill: Gentle Prayer
Recovers HP for a period of time, albeit extremely slowly. Works while equipped in either hand.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Infused or Buffed.
  • Can be used to cast both Miracles and Sorceries.
  • Reinforced with Twinkling Titanite.
  • Spellbuff:
    • 45/45 = 223 = Softcap
    • 40/40 = 216
    • 30/30 = 202
    • 20/20 = 157
    • 18/18 = 148
  • This chime gets dual Intelligence and Faith scaling on all magic sorceries and all lightning miracles, but the physical miracles will only scale with Faith.
  • It does give dual Intelligence and Faith scaling to dark spells, however it doesn't give boosted damage to these like the Izalith Staff, Caitha's Chime, or Sunless Talisman do.
  • Weapon buff spells and Healing spells do not gain dual scaling with the Crystal Chime.
    • All sorcery weapon buffs will scale with only Intelligence
    • All miracle weapon buffs will only scale with Faith, including Dark Blade.
    • All healing miracles will only scale with faith
  • The chime has to remain active in your hand for the weapon art to continue regenerating health.
  • Weighing 1.5 less than a Sorcerer's Staff, it is the lightest sorcery catalyst in the game.
  • As it can be used without meeting its own INT/FTH requirements, it is ideal for casting spells that do not rely on scaling, such as Blessed Weapon, Force, Spook, or Snap Freeze.

With a Pyro-flame in the other hand, you can RP an unarmed Sorcerer: Fire, Frost, Lightning and Crystal galore from my fingertips!
Also boulders from my mouth apparently idk earth isn't an element to me anymore.

        Gertrude's Chime: *Exists*
Scholars: Hey why don't we take this for no reason and just slap a bunch of crystals on here and call it a day

Demon's Scar + Crystal Chime = be able to effectively use almost every spell in the game while wielding a weapon.

This is the best chime/catalyst in ds3. Fight me. Even when taking into consideration the higher scaling of other chimes/catalysts, this remains a *very* practical easy to use lightweight high damage low stamina usage tool of sheer power!
The damage you could reach with this is genuinely great! Granted, it falls short of the damage of some other chimes/catalysts, but it's nothing to brush over!

And for sorcery/miracle hybrid builds, this is obviously hands down the best tool at their disposals.

            • Anonymous

The highest damage output with miracles for builds with intelligence and faith. With 60 int 40 faith my lightning arrow deal more than 800 damage to a lothric knight with rings, headgear buff + rose of ariandel buff + sacred oath buff. Recommended.

              • Anonymous

At 30 fth OR int and no investment in the opposite stat this is actually the best catalyst for weapon buffs. For example when casting CMW a 30 int this will buff by 143 damage while sorcerers staff (the best staff for this level of int) will buff by 133 damage. So if are running a buff build with say 30 faith use this instead.

                • Anonymous

This Chime at 45/45 Int/Fth will quite comfortably match or beat any other staff or chime/talisman for damage barring dark spells where it will be weak. However once you start getting into the 50’s look to other catalysts such as Court Sorcerer’s, Saint’s, or Yorshka’s. Because, once you hit 50, this things scaling crashes and it hardly increases at all while other more dedicated catalysts will start to take off.

Is this useful for only healing and buff miracles and offensive sorceries like css or great soul arrow? (pve only btw)

                    • Anonymous

So magic sorcery and lightning miracle all gain power from both sides? Meaning more powerful than using each only in their respective stats? wow

                      • Anonymous

This is the swiss army knife of the pyromancer. 3 different available damage types with good hybrid scaling applied, incredible bleed damage output, a heal in a pinch, a number of weapon/shield buffs and more in utility spells + its low weight makes this outperform almost any if not all other catalysts in the game in terms of usefulness. Sure it doesn't outperform a dedicated S scale faith/intelligence catalyst in terms of max damage but keep in mind it still deals very respectable damage and in PVP that pool to work with can catch someone by surprise.

I really wish they'd just make some sort of "Magic hands" item in a souls game that can cast ALL types of magic. Hands specifically because I'm sick everything that's not pyromancy require a physical implement for casting, doesn't feel as powerful-magic user to me.

                          • Anonymous

Is it too much to ask for a single catalyst, casts sorceries and miracles, AND boosts dark damage? How does a game that courts so many edgelords make it so hard to do a dark build?

                            • Anonymous

tried to scour the comments. does this provide the same spell buff if you int/fth are asymmetrical? ex. will it provide the same buff at 40/20 as it would 30/30?

                              • Anonymous

This is actually very good for miracle/sorcery hybrid. It does a **** ton of damage at 45/45, if you use lightning miracles that is ( and why wouldn’t you?) For the ones who say it lacks poisecast, just left hand the canvas talisman and right hand this. And for those who say they want a melee weapon aside from their catalyst, learn to hardswap.

                                • Anonymous

This is essentially the "Black Witches Staff" of ds3. Except it doesn't seem to be as powerful. However the versatility of casting both miracles and spells can't be ignored.

Possibly because of how good Black witches staff was.

                                  • Anonymous

This chime benefits from crystal sage staff s buff, but only when using sorceries. Miracles are not affected by that buff.

                                    • Anonymous

This is my must-have on a hybrid caster build and one of my personal favorites. Crystal Chime + Demon's Scar = You can cast every spell in the game at 50/45 split and is doable at SL 120 and usually is sub-30 on weight even at minimal VIT. Extremely fun to run with all allocations into Ashen Estus Flasks for extra "challenge", though you'll be melting everything once you get near endgame. Having 6-8 Attunement slots is ideal for a heal, GHSA or CSS, CBV (2), Black Fire Orb, Lightning Arrow + some support spells like Cleansing Tears, ReRapport, Pestilent Mist, or Snap Freeze. Darkmoon Ring for the extra attunement slots is a must and you'll need to swap damage rings to hit your target's elemental weakness, or use Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring + Witch's Ring for general use. Swap between Dusk Crown Ring and Ashen Estus Ring for the fourth ring and you'll never run dry. It's not as powerful as a pure glass cannon Sorcerer, Pyro, or Cleric, but it's so much more fun to play.

Lightning arrow/pestilent mist plus this chime. Great for Midir runs as a pyro. Lets you swap between the spells without having to worry about also switching weapons

                                        • Anonymous

It looks really cool to use melee Sorceries with this, especially the Farron Flashsword. It looks like you’re actually holding the sword as opposed to just having it on the end of a stick. Note that this is the least practical catalyst to use if you’re using spells like it, because you’re basically halving the spells hit box, but I mean it looks cool!

                                          • Anonymous

For pyromancers or other 30/30 builds, this chime *is* the best for weapon buffs. At least, my +4 crystal chime gives 141 lightning damage with lightning blade, and my +8 Cleric's Sacred Chime gives 135.

                                            • Anonymous

Lightning miracles do scale well with this. I have 45 faith/intelligence and have this maxed. A lightning arrow does 458 damage against the summoner in great belfry, while yorshka's chime only deals 446 under same conditions.

                                              • Anonymous

Would this be a good option for a build designed to cast Darkmoon Blade as well as other buffs like Magic Shield, plus healing miracles? Wanting to kind of do a classic Paladin/Cleric-ish build once I get my 30 concords. Group Support spells + Damage buffs + A shield.

                                                • Anonymous

Lore-wise, this item is very interesting. It shows that the scholars of the Grand Archives were working on combining sorcery with other schools of magic. The presence of this chime proves that they had success in the case of miracles. The fact that you also find the Witch's Locks in the Grand Archives makes me think that they were attempting to do so with pyromancy as well. Cornyx and OG Dark Souls confirm the existence of fire sorcery, used by the Witch of Izalith and her daughters at the beginning of time. The scholars were probably experimenting with witch hair to see if they could recreate the effect, but seem to have been unsuccessful.

                                                  • Anonymous

If one only plans to use offensive sorceries and miracles such as great heavy soul arrow and sunlight spear, would the crystal chime be the best to use, or should I us a dedicated staff and chime for sorceries and miracles. Right now I swap around between a court sorceror's staff, yorshka's chime, and izalith staff as needed, but I'd rather be able to consolidate the staff and chime if possible to save trips to the equip screen (and space in my inventory).

                                                    • Anonymous

Hey does anyone know weather this or the court sorcerer staff would have better spellbuff for sorcery on a 50int/30fth build. Figured I'd ask in case someone else has tested it, if not I'll test it myself

                                                      • Anonymous

I use this for my faith/intelligence build and it is good not having to switch between 2 catalysts mid fight. I also use a crystal lothric great sword for that build when I wanna fight head on which eats up my equip load and I'm just under 70% so I dont have to worry about fat rolling too.

                                                        • Anonymous

The stupid qualifiers on these faith/int combo scaling items. This miracle scales with int but these ones don't, this sorcery scales with faith but these ones don't, dark miracles scale with both except when Jupiter is in retrograde and the temperature is between 60-70 F. For *****'s sake From, just have it do what the spell buff says.

                                                          • Anonymous

It's for sorcery/miracle hybrid builds. The pyro talisman is the white hair thing, since it cast pyromancies AND miracles.

                                                            • Anonymous

The only miracles that get the int scaling are lightning ones and the only lightning spell that's useful without unfaltering prayer is lightning arrow :| good sorcery catalyst though

                                                              • Anonymous

I found a pretty terrifying build using this chime. Find yourself the Morne’s, sun’s first born, and lightning clutch rings. Go to the grand archives to pick up the chime and sunlight straightsword. Find the Lothric war banner, and transpose Sister Friede’s soul into the rise of Ariandel. Upgrade everything. Equip all your new bling. First, use the Rose WA, then the SSS WA, then cast deep protection (in that exact order), and finally war banner. Then equip the sunlight spear miracle. At 40-40 INT and faith, I was able to pull 1400 damage by jamming a sunny spear into Midir’s eyeball at point-blank range.

                                                                • Anonymous

beast miracles tool in the game, very good to miracle as mutch then sorcery, i personely use it all the time.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Highest sorcery dmg. Gives sorcerers the ability to cast buffs and utility miracles not advised for dmg faith builds since it's not a talisman. Best used as a pyro or an ultra sorcerer hungry for dmg.

                                                                    • Buffs and physical miracles seem to only have 160 spellbuff. I recommend carrying around a heretics staff or canvas/priests for these spells as they hover around 190 spellbuff at 45/45

                                                                      • Anonymous

Fun fact, you don't technically need the full requirements to use this thing. If you wanna use it for sorcery, so you don't want to have faith, if you at least have the INT requirement for the catalyst and spell, you can cast. Great for surprising enemies who think you're gonna use a miracle, or don't know it's in your hand.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Only people who need to use this are sorcerers bcz of high spellbuff and support/caster faith builds since sorcery is superior to miracles in dmg and fp cost and this can be very useful to rangef casters unless you want to use a talisman and get in the guy's face. As such i am interested in the spellbuff of the crystal chime at 16/45 and 45/16 int/fth. Or maybe a softcap for 16/? And ?/16.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Using a pure Mage Build, I use this chime for Iran gentle prayer ability in saving on estus and at the same time, keep myself invisible while the healing takes effect and/or finding a safe space.

                                                                            • Anonymous

This chime is like it was made just for my build. I love using sorceries and miracles both because I like having "solar' and "lunar" magic, but I never use dark magic.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Great thing for cosplay builds, that imply some sorts of lasers, handguns, or laser handguns. Ideal for cosplaying The Stranger from Furi, for example.

                                                                                • Anonymous

IMO 13-18% less damage compared to the specialist catalysts and chimes is more than a fair trade off for the far greater versatility provided by this chime

                                                                                  • Part of that's because Sunless Talisman is meant more for dark spells.

Although, with those spells you'll get a whole lot more out of a normal Talisman than you would out of the Crystal Chime. Crystal is meant for offensive lightning and magic spells (its double scaling only applies to those, not to buffs), and Sunless only applies its double scaling to offensive dark spells (not buffs, just stuff like Dorhy's Gnawing or Lifehunt Scythe). A normal Talisman will get a lot more out of Great Heal, Lightning Blade, or Dark Blade than either the Crystal Chime or Sunless Talisman. Though, you won't be able to cast Hidden Body, I suppose.

This is one of those cases where the spellbuff value is highly misleading. It'll tell you the total scaling the catalyst gets from all stats, which makes catalysts with dual Int+Fth scaling look really strong on paper, however the full scaling will only apply to a select few spells so in practice they tend to be quite a bit weaker. Also, in most cases the spells that benefit from dual scaling are very weak without it, so all that really does is puts them on par with normal spells cast by a normal catalyst.

                                                                                    • This catalyst is meant for an INT/FTH builds that wants to use both sorceries and miracles. Pyro's can definitely get some use out of it, but a Pure Pyro would use pyromancy spells and not miracles or sorceries.

                                                                                      • I am so glad they brought an item like this back. In case anyone does not know, in Demons Souls there was an item that also gave you the ability to cast both Sorceries and Miracles. This will allow me to finally play the build I had in Demons Souls as such a item was missing in DS I and DS II.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

I have 15 int 30 fth with a spell buff of 111 and this outcasts my sunless talisman with a spell buff of 133 in terms of healing and dmg buff. Great heal, lightning blade and dark blade all cast for more even though the spell buff and fth scaling are lower, not sure why but it works, maybe somebody could explain that? lol I really only use it so dont have to carry a staff to cast hidden body lol

                                                                                          • My favorite way to use this is alongside an Izalith Staff. Equip a couple dark spells and a couple magic spells, then you can have both the Young Dragon and Bellowing Dragoncrest rings without needing to worry about miracle rings or doing subpar sorcery damage with your staff. Same thing with Sunless Talisman and miracle rings, then just have dark miracles and lightning miracles. Makes the whole setup feel a little less awkward, since you don't have to worry about your rings not matching or getting absurd damage penalties on half your spells.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

So, it seems like this struggles with everything besides direct damage lightning miracles and direct damage magic sorceries. Dark spells don't do well with it, nor do any kind of scaling buffs. Physical miracles also perform badly.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I think it's a shame it doesn't apply bonuses to buff spells. Int/Faith scaling Darkmoon Blade would be incredibly entertaining with this.

                                                                                                • Added new info, clarified some old info.

It's only ever weaker than other options with an equal level cost by about 5%-13%, but its versatility makes up for this. Unlike, say, the White Hair Talisman which can be anywhere from 25% to 50% weaker than other miracle or pyromancy options depending on what you're trying to cast.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

This thing is absurd! Not only does it catalyze both miracles and sorceries, which is really convenient, but if you're got really high fth/int, it'll out-perform every other catalyst in terms of spell buffing as far as i can tell. Really damn good!

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

The Sorcerers Staff +9 Does 517 with Soul Spear and the Canvas Talisman +9 does 415 damage Sunlight Spears. Definitely a worth while investment to use this chime if you don't plan on using any Dark Spells

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Seems like you can still use this chime, even if you dont fullfill the requirements. Atleast when it comes to "utility" spells/miracles.

I'm at 10 Int and 10 Faith, have Chameleon and Force attuned. Cant use either of them, but when I equip Scholar and Priestess ring (+5 Int and +5 Faith respectively) I can use the spell/miracle I have attuned. I tried it out, and with Chameleon/Scholar at 10 Int, I could use this chime to make myself into an inanimate object, despite not having enough for the lowest requirements to use the chime, and with Force/Priestess at 10 Faith, I managed to send a Hollow flying.

So it seems that while you dont actually fullfill the requirements to use the Chime, *utility spells and miracles* actually is possible to use like normal.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

It's worth noting that this chime DOES enjoy the benefits of an offhand Scholar's Candlestick, just like any staff. This testing was done without one, and I didn't see the point in doing a separate test which considered the Scholar's Candlestick, since the playing field would remain equal and the staves wouldn't have any more of a leg-up over the chime.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

With DARK miracles, this chime outdamages the Canvas Talisman, the White Hair Talisman, the Cleric's Sacred Chime, and Yorshka's Chime, and is outdamaged by the Sunless Talisman and Caitha's Chime (Caitha's first place, Sunless second place). With PHYSICAL miracles, this chime is outdamaged by all of the above catalysts, with Yorshka's Chime in first place and the Cleric's Chime in second place.

                                                                                                                  • My plan for Dark Souls 3 is to make a pyromancy build, but use the faith and intelligence required to use a pyro build to also use sorceries and miracles. Is the Crystal Chime viable for this, or should I equip a catalyst and a talisman instead?

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Hmm if you took away the crystals from this chime I think it looks like Idol's Chime from Dark Souls 2. Idol's chime was also a unique faith/int dedicated chime that interestingly enough belonged to Licia of Lindelt. Licia herself was in possession of the Soothing Sunlight miracle, a miracle of Gywnevere..although how she obtained it may be questionable as it's implied she stole it. That being said, she came from Lindelt, a place known for it's clerics and dare I say, the Way of the White, which is dedicated to Gywnevere. Lindelt was even run by a royal family who held possession of the ring of restoration, a sun ring with the ability to heal people continually, not unlike Gywnevere's ring. The really interesting part is that Lindelt is in possession of the Monastary Set of armor. If you google this armor you will find it is identical to the Painted Guardians Set from Ariamis. So Lindelt is connected to Gywnevere and Ariamis/Velka ,and in turn all of these are connected back to Gertrude's Chime.

My character has 18 int and fth for using utility spells and using this catalyst since it is very light and my equip liad is very low . Surprisingly with proper items great heavy soul arrow cast with this catalyst deals high damage. When aiding a friend in coop i used that spell on the first giant in cathedral of the deep, and with all of the sorcery boosting items equipped the spell dealt 1099 dmg per hit. I killed the nameless king with the same item and spell without equipping the scholars candlestick and magic clutch ring, dealin 320 dmg per cast.

Does the crystal chime need equal int and faith or can I have a lower faith than int and still get nearly the same spellbuff per stat point invested?

So I decided to test the damage numbers at 45 int/45 fth with the Crystal Chime, Caitha's Chime, and the Izalith Staff because I was curious how much of a damage loss it would be for the convenience of having a catalyst capable of casting any spell in the game except Pyromancies. I tested 5 of the 6 (did not have Great Deep Soul at the time) Dark spells that deal damage, and here's the numbers I came up with (Dark Blade values are the amount of AR I gained on the weapon).Crystal Chime: Dorhys' Gnawing - 313 Caitha's Chime: Dorhys' Gnawing - 407 Izalith Staff: Deep Soul - 184 Dark Blade - 137 Dark Blade - 154 Affinity - 270 Deep Soul - 147 Dark Edge - 456 Affinity - 256 Dark Edge - 360Note the highest damage loss is 96 on Dark Edge, followed by 94 on Dorhys' Gnawing. I would have used Great Deep Soul as well in the testing but I have not gotten around to farming it from the covenant yet. All in all though, I would imagine it will also be in the 90 damage loss range at most which in my personal opinion isn't that big of a loss when you consider the ability to use any spell in the game with the same catalyst (again, excluding Pyromancies). All of these damage tests were done against the man-grub enemies outside of the Rosaria's Bedchamber.
