Deep Gem

deep gem

A gem of infused titanite. Found in the dregs of the Cathedral of the deep.

Used in infusion to deep weapons.

Deep weapons inflict dark damage, but lose scaling effects.

There is a darkness that lies beyond human ken.

Deep Gem Usage

Deep Gem Locations

  • At Cathedral of the Deep, Bonfire 2, head up the elevator through the first opened shortcut path (on the right if facing the altar). • Dropped by Thralls in the Cathedral of the Deep.
  • Dropped by Deacons in Cathedral of the DeepIrithyll of the Boreal Valley and Anor Londo, with a droprate of around 1% before item discovery.

Notes

  • Requires the Sage's Coal in order to start infusing weapons.
  • The Deep Gem, along with Fire Gem, can infuse with shields for increasing elemental defense.

The shape of the Deep Gem implies that it posesses a higher growth rate around the outside edges instead of the inside edges (akin to bismuth), or that it's made of a few large crystals as opposed to several small ones.

Fire is the symbol of the gods, the source of their power. Conversely, Dark is the symbol of Man, and the source of their power.

Chaos is a flame the gods could not control. Even with a Lordsoul, the Witch could not save Izalith from being razed to the ground. Deep is the parallel to that: a dark not if Man. The item description states that there is a darkness beyond human ken. The miracles of the Deep include the Gnawing, which Irina is herself afflicted by, and the locust in the Ringed City who tells her tale comments that the gnawing creatures are not from the Abyss. The Deep is something else entirely: the dark of the gods. Aldrich made contact with the Deep by eating gods, and was in no service to Man and his Abyss; ultimately he committed himself to the First Flame as a Lord.

Fire, being of the gods, does not respond to the strength of Man. A fire infused weapon has no scaling. The Deep behaves the same way.

Deep and Fire gems are best used on weapons with high base damage such as the exile greatsword which reaches 407 AR at just +6 with only 16/16 strength and dex the bare minimum to wield it. They are useful for vitality and vigor tank builds, they allow you to trade a bit of damage potential for the ability to dump the stats you would usually waste on 40/40 faith and and int. Damage isn't everything if you can out poise your oponent and out tank them the 60 to 80 less ar on your weapon is going to hurt them a lot more when they are already starved in survivability stats compared to your build.

So wait, from what understand from some of the posted comments.. "Dark Gems" are mainly for players who are dedicated to Intelligence and Faith. Soo, using this gem with low of either stat will actually lower your damage, rather then to NOT use a gem. "Deep Gems" are probably better for Melee characters who do not rely on Intelligence or Faith. Also, gives more Dark damage in comparison to a Dark Gem weapon with low required scaled stats. This sound about correct?

So, what weapons would profit the most from this (and maybe fire) gem?
Everyone says how these two are outclasses by gems that keep scalings, which is a fact, of course, but there's gotta be a weapon that works well with them, right?

              • Just spent a few hours farming these, with 372 item discovery I got 14 gems from 50 runs of the guys who shoot fireballs down at you outside sullyvahn. That's about a 3.2% chance, meaning the base is probably around 1%. Put this in the notes, thought it would be helpful for the one other person who's ever going to farm deep gems.

I also got one from Corvian Storyteller on a road of Sacrifices, although I think that drop rate is extremely low, never happenned to me before

Cathedral knight shield + 9 infused with this gem gains 98 dark absorption. Makes midir s dark beams a joke.

In French they translated it by "Gemme abyssale", literally abyssal Gem, so a gem from the Abyss. DS3 is my first DS so I know nothing about the lore but I think the Abyss and the Deep are different ? Did the french translators ask the creators of the game about the possible translations of "Deep" (which is correctly translated as "profondeurs" in "Cathédrale des profondeurs"/Cathedral of the Deep) in that case or did they just ***** up the lore and decided to name this gem abyssal only because it dealt dark damage ? The first situation is quite confusing, are there links between the Deep and the Abyss ?

"There is a darkness that lies beyond human ken"

Wtf is that supposed to mean? Everything else points to the relation between humanity's dark and the deep (i.e., human dregs), yet now there is darkness 'beyond humanity'? For *****'s sakes. A year later and we're not able to figure out this convoluted***** lol

                        • Spent a good 30 minutes trying to farm a Deep Gem in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, and had no luck...Went to Anor Londo (specifically, Aldritch's Bonfire), and got one in 10 minutes.

                          • I think translators from jap->eng maked mistake and translated Abyss(or Dark) as Deep. So it would be Dark gem (adds dark to weapon) or Abyss Gem, coz its too means darkness in DS lore.. but wtf is Deep? Maybe water, ocean? Rly?Ok for some of you, who sees my english is very bad... yes my english is very bad, but its not means anything about my thoughts. I believe that ds3 was translated to russian from english version, and have this mistake as well. And its very bad for ds3 lore...Ok and for last who don't believe me and thinks im stupid. Open google translator, choose English -> Japanese. Type in Deep(or Abyss, or Dark) and you'll see there is japanese words in translation are the same. Maybe we can tell publishers to patch their translations? Or i'm really stupid idiot and don't know ds3 lore..
