Grand Archives is a Location in Dark Souls 3. Scholars endlessly navigate the towering bookshelves of the archives, seeking for and guarding long lost secrets with darkness that can only be countered by submerging oneself in wax.

Facing the Crystal Sage

From the Grand Archives bonfire proceed forward and open the double doors with the Grand Archives Key, which you can grab after defeating 3 Lords of Cinder. Through the doors head straight and dispatch the Crystal Sage. If you do not kill him quickly, he will disappear and teleport around the area. One technique to killing the Sage when first encountered is to equip a weapon laced with poison or rub one down with Rotten Pine Resin before going through the doors. Pelt the Sage with Dung Pies on approach and then hit it as many times as you can with your poison laced weapon before the Sage disappears. A better strategy may be to use a combination of Toxic Mist and Poison Mist pyromancies, not requiring a heavy investment of FTH to be effective. If the Sage is toxic and poisoned and it's HP knocked down sufficiently enough it may drop dead off scene in which case a pop up that the Crystal Scroll has been obtained will appear. If this doesn't kill the Sage then the second encounter should make for a quick kill. When you eventually kill him he will drop the Crystal Scroll.

Cover your head in Wax

Make your way back into the room and head left to find a thrall. Kill it and head left up the stairs to loot a Titanite Chunk 1x. Drop down and continue forward up the stairs to find a Crystal Lizard. Take a staircase up here to find Soul of a Crestfallen Knight 1x. Take a staircase back around for a Titanite Chunk 1x. Continue exploring this room where you will encounter a thrall, as well as a red eyed lothric knight. The Knight guards a Titanite Chunk x1, and a room nearby him has the Crystal Chime. Near the main portion of this room you can go up a library stepladder to find a Titanite Scale 1x. Head to the altar section of the room and take out the wax covered priests. Once defeated, approach the wax pool and accept the prompt to Dunk head in wax. This will cover your character in wax and protect you from being cursed by an enemy you will soon encounter.

Make a right into the next room to take out 2 Crystal Lizards. Ghostly hands will pop out from the walls here and if not waxed they will inflict curse upon you. In this room you will find a corpse with Soul of a Nameless Soldier 1x. Just right after the third book case on the wall in front of you there is a lever which opens a secret room on your left, you will find Witch's Locks in a chest and Power Within on a corpse. Head up the stairs and go left to kill a wax priest. Behind him loot a corpse for Titanite Scale 1x. Step out into the adjacent room to kill a wax priest. To the right kick down the ladder. In an alcove in this room you can loot a corpse for Titanite Chunk 1x. Continue down this room to take on a crystal lizard. If you continue straight and to the balcony outside you will find Homeward Bone 3x on a corpse hanging over the railing. On this balcony you can find a ladder up. Advance into the next room where you may encounter the Crystal Sage if you have not killed him yet. To the right will be a wax priest. Across this path will be more thralls and a wax priest at the end. At the end you can drop down to the next ledge to find a corpse with Titanite Scale 1x.

If you're feeling athletic you can roll off here to land on top of a bookcase where you can head to the left to find Avelyn. Head back and drop off to the right and take the ladder on the right up. Head right and proceed until you reach the stairs on the right. Take them up to take on 3 thralls. You can loot a Titanite Chunk 1x here. There is a wax pool here if your earlier dip has worn off.

Find the Boreal Outrider Knight & Shortcut

Take the stairs down and head to the opposite staircase and go up where you will encounter some thralls and a wax priest and around the corner another wax priest. Loot a corpse in the corner for Titanite Scale 1x. To the right attack a wall to reveal an Illusory Wall. There will be a Boreal Outrider Knight in this next room. Defeating him will earn you the Outrider Knight Armor Set. On your way out of this room, head right down the walkway to find Soul Stream on a corpse.

Head out of this room and drop down to the lower level and take the central walkway out and up the stairs. At the top of the stairs to the right you will come to a lift. Take the lift down to the bottom. Exit the lift and straight ahead you will see a lever. Pull it to open the door in front of you, unlocking a shortcut to the main entrance.

Find the Titanite Slab

Take the lift back up and head out to the main central path, make a right before the next door to find a Shriving Stone 1x. Make your way towards the exit of this room, leading outside. Before you exit turn left to find a lever which will slide the nearby bookcase to reveal a room. In this room you will find the Scholar Ring on a corpse and a wax pool. Head down the stairs where thralls will come out and attack. Defeat them and proceed to the left where you will find another level. Pull it to lower a bookcase in the room. The chest is located on the floor with the giant wax pool. Once you reach the giant wax pool, you'll turn AWAY from it to face the railing that overlooks the Crystal Sage spawn point, walk to here and once you reach the railing with a dead body next to it, and a red eyed skeleton to the left behind some book cases, look right, and the chest contains a Titanite Slab.

Make your way back to the central bridge and cross it, exiting via the doorway and up the stairs. Turn left and head up the staircase to encounter 2 wax priests, avoiding the many ghost hands here. Loot Soul of a Crestfallen Knight 1x. In a corner is a chest with Titanite Scale 3x.

Exit the room via the doorway where a wax priest stands. Head up the stairs to find a Crystal Lizard to the right. Nearby you will find Fleshbite Ring on a corpse. Exit the room to outside and drop down to the left to reach the rooftops. To the right you will come onto a large rooftop where a stone gargoyle will fly in and attack. You can loot a corpse at the edge here for a Titanite Chunk 1x. You can drop off this roof to a lower level, and enter the archway to find a corpse with Hollow Gem 1x. Step out the doorway here and head right to find a corpse at the end with a Titanite Chunk 1x. Make your way back through the room you just came from and head left to encounter some winged foes. Try and take them out one at a time. Proceed onto the next rooftop and if you head left to the corner and look down you will see another roof you can jump to. If you're feeling athletic, make the jump to find a corpse with Titanite Scale 3x as well as Greirat's Ashes. If not, be prepared to engage a gargoyle guarding a Soul of a Weary Warrior 1x. To return to this spot, jump forward over the railing to land on the balcony where you can work your way back up to the roof to find the aforementioned Soul and 2 Crystal Lizards to the left. 3 Gargoyles will engage you on this roof. On an adjacent rooftop you can find a Titanite Chunk 1x.

Hostile NPC trio

Drop down to enter another building where a wax priest waits in the opening. You can loot an Ember 1x on this top level as well as an Undead Bone Shard 1x. You can kick down a ladder on the right to unlock access to and from the lower level. Further across the floor you will encounter a thrall and red eyed lothric knight. To the left on a balcony, you will find a Titanite Chunk 2x. Head back inside the building and head right, until you come to an opening on the right. Step outside and into the courtyard with the statue in the middle and head up the large set of stairs to take on 3 NPCs. The one in Faraam armor drops the Golden Wing Crest Shield, The Mage drops Sage's Crystal Staff. The dual katana wielder drops Onikiri and Ubadachi. A corpse on the stairs can be looted for Large Soul of a Crestfallen Knight 1x.
You can avoid fighting them by equipping the slumbering dragoncrest ring and casting hidden body. Casting spook instead of wearing the ring should work as well, but it's trickier due to hidden body's short duration. Extending the duration with the lingering dragoncrest ring helps.

Major Shortcut & Winged Knights

Continue up the stairs and into the building to find a lift on your right. Activate it to unlock the shortcut back to the Grand Archives bonfire. Take the lift back up and head right out the building and make an immediately left and take the left staircase up. At the top head left to find Soul of a Crestfallen Knight 1x. Continue to a gap in the railing and hug the railing until you reach a staircase. Go up the stairs and head right and head right through an archway to find a corpse along the railing with an Estus Shard 1x. Return to where you first stepped onto the roof and head up the roof, through the staircase and up the roof further, before entering the building you can head right and take a ladder to a tower where you will find Hunter's Ring. Head back down and return up the roof to enter the building. Along the way you will encounter 3 Ascended Winged Knights who will drop a Titanite Slab the first time you kill them all. Inside the the building find a hole in the floor where you can drop down to the beam and drop again and then once more inside the cage to find the miracle Divine Pillars of Light. Step out of the cage to find a Blessed Gem on the beam. A man grub caster on a beam below will be casting soul spear at you. Drop down to this beam, kill the grub and take the nearby ladder down to find 2 chests with Divine Blessing 1x and Twinkling Titanite 3x.

Boss Fight: Twin Princes

Make your way either back to the bonfire or the lift that connects to it. At the top of the lift, head right out the building and take the main path forward to come to a series of blockades with many hollows behind them. Beyond will be knight enemies. Proceed forward and find a doorway on the right where you can enter a building to find a lift. Take it down to activate a shortcut to Lothric Castle. If you activate the lift again here and roll off, a second lift platform will rise up. Step on the lift and take it down to find a Titanite Slab 1x on a corpse here. Take the lift back up and head right to open the double doors. Enter the next chamber to fight the boss, Lothric, Younger Prince.

Defeat the Twin Princes to obtain Cinders of a Lord and Soul of the Twin Princes. Light the bonfire and return to Firelink and place the Cinders on the throne to initiate the final battle at Kiln of the First Flame. Or you may opt to finish exploring the optional areas of Consumed King's Garden, Untended Graves and Archdragon Peak.

After several playthroughs, I finally decided to try the 'poison the sage' method and wow, I can't believe how well it worked and how the area is so much easier and relaxing without him to worry about! All I did was throw several dung pies at him until he was toxified, then ran up and hit him until he teleported. A minute or so later and bam! I got the message and the scroll. He was dead :)

I highly recommend this method if anyone hasn't already tried it.

It wouldve been really sweet if Fromsoft designed an entirely separate rooftop zone after the archives. This was the 'penultimate climb' but it felt anticlimactic imo. I wouldve liked to see more than a bridge full of knights and a few rooftop gargoyles on the main path. Crash bandicoot slippery climb, jak and daxter gol and maia citadel, jak 2 walking on the giant cable to reach the palace... Etc. The view outside of Freides chapel was prettier than the view atop lothric castle.

So instead of just putting a bonfire next to the boss room, they put an elevator that leads to another elevator that leads to a ladder that leads to an earlier bonfire? I love this game but the ridiculous amount of effort they put into just making sure an area has only one bonfire is seriously annoying.

Many seem to forget you can drop down onto the rafters from the bird cage. Most will either separate or fall to their deaths somewhere trying to find you.

My god, I always thought dipping your head in wax was some kind of light-mechanic where you can somehow use your head as a candle and I just never used it because I had a torch in my offhand for dark places lmao

I NEVER noticed it actually helps against the curse-hands, I just thought I sometimes dodged them well

              • Anonymous

If you shoot bow guy in Gank Squad and run to the ladder, you can pull them apart to get them one at a time if you're careful. Bow guy is easy to manipulate, just run back and he pulls out his bow, then you can run in and melee him. Mage is braindead and axe guy just sprint in to bait an attack, then back out to space it and hit him while he recovers

This place is worse than goddamn Farron Keep. I'll take a poison swamp any day over a sniping crystal sage, cumming old men, a bunch of gargoyles and hands that pop out from floors and walls that inflict curse. At least you can see the basilisks coming for you in Farron Keep, here I'm just suddenly stuck in a death trap. Then there's the confusing ass layout. Like, jump down here, there's an item! Congrats, you're now back at the beginning. Do it again.

Why does this area have a lower recommended level than Lothric Castle if it comes literally right after it?

                    • Anonymous

Weird that I haven't been able to find anything about this but in the room right after the first pool of wax with the two crystal lizards you can faintly hear music playing and this us the only room you can hear it in

                      • Anonymous

Fun fact: you can shoot arrows through the floor of the cage where you find the Divine Pillars of Light, because this is a FromSoft game and you better believe they thought about that. That'll teach that maggot caster for trying to snipe.

Those directions to the titanite slab are just abysmal. When you're writing a guide like this, you have to be clear, coherent and precise - and most of all - keep it in mind that, just because it makes sense to you as you write it, it doesn't mean it's going to make sense to someone reading it. Be explicit with your directions.

I'll easily take Senpou Temple over this for "area full of creepy men doing creepy stuff"... at least it's colorful over there

                            • Does anybody know how to get the soul/shard on the adjacent roof when you're looking off the RHS of the 2nd story balcony? I even cast Sppok spell, jumped off roof where you fight the flaming spear gargoyles, and although I landed in the right spot, I still died TWICE, and that's with 1324 HP AND being Embered! Any help would be awesome. Thx

In case anyone is using maps instead of following the written guide, the "Placeholder" item in Map 2 is a Titanite Slab

What is the meaning of the different statues? All of the beheaded kneeling knights in Lothric castle and on the bridge where you fight the Dragonslayer Armour seem to indicate possessed undead soldiers. Then a melted wax covered robed figure holding out some text, the praying mother character, the king (Oceiros?), and some Darkstalker in fancy garb all dominate the Grand Archives.

Buff your most high output weapon with the poison resin and rush the crystal sage, you can watch the poison continue to work (quite a while) through the wall from outside near the fire (outside of their range). It should take out enough that you can rip the sage up in their second spot before they move again.

If ur having trouble with the crystal sage, throw dung pies at him until he becomes toxic. Wait for the effect to run out and repeat. Never took me more than 10 dung pies.

I don't know how to explain it but I really hate this area not because of the thrall hoods, not because of those ghost hand or not because of the Lothric knights. It just that looking at the sky after you get out of there you can't see the beauty, it's just straight up depressing with all those hollow soldiers and you get a heavy sense of duty to killing the twin princes and deciding what to do with the flame. In Irithyll you can enjoy both, like seeing how beautiful the area is and how much of a ****ing jerk the pontiff Sulyvahn is. In my opinion FromSoftware nailed how depressing the world in dark souls is with this area and maybe that's why I hate "feel" I get when I get to this area.

Power Within is not listed in the brief summary of items, spells, and materials at the top. It is mentioned in the full walkthrough below, but it should be noted, and added to the top. Somewhat misleading

Hold on guys- *melts face in hot wax so I don't get turned into stone by the books' ghost hands, because video game or something*

I'm surprised there isn't the irithyll frost knight mentioned here. Behind an illusory wall! I wish i could upload a picture with this comment

After failing way too often at luring the NPC trio one by one, I decided to dash past them so I could use the elevator, hoping they'd jump after me (or falling into the shaft while attacking). Unfortunately, they didn't. But apparently they still have trouble with that elevator when you come back up. I stayed inside the cabin all the time, while they circled around me and to my surprise, I could hit them through the cabin walls. You still have to watch out for their attacks, as they go through walls as well, of course. After some time, axe guy found the way inside and I was able to take him out on the way down. Next was mr. katana, who was standing behind the cabin. He hit me once, pushing me back onto the button, but the next time I rode up, I got him through the cage (Later I was able to pick up his drop as well). I was left with Kriemhild, who got stuck somewhere near the door of the room. I still had to dodge her spells, of course. Unfortunately, my attacks were almost always parried perfectly, but (contrary to her phantom variation) she never riposted. In the end, I took her out with my trusty old bow.

Crystal sage was easy. Hidden Body + slumbering dragoncrest ring + storyteller staff + pestilent mist Id go stealth and run up to sage to apply my spells then run back out. It took 2 applications. Sage never ran or even casted

I love messing with invaders by finding a certain stack of books that you can hide perfectly in, and watch them black crystal in front of me. I always try to jump out right as they black crystal, so that they can see me and feel regret.

What's going on with the level suggestion here? The suggestion for Lothric Castle is 75-90 but the Grand Archives, which comes next, is 65-80. Somethings not adding up.

                                                                  • I've started calling those three unkindled you face before the boss "Demon's Souls Tribute Band". I know they're not exactly the same, but I thought it was pretty cool. That, and the stairway to the fog has enemy placement very reminiscent of the last few enemies before the Penetrator boss.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I'm not sure why but when I reached the area where the trio was on the roof of the archives (before the second elevator short cut) the trio was already dead. I haven't any clues as to why either, only thing that I can think of is that it has something to do with Sirris' quest line. If anyone else has finished Sirris' quest line and they're still alive when you go to the archives, please let me know.

                                                                      • Anonymous

NPC trip - Focus on the caster first, she'll deal high damage and is a huge nuisance if not rid first. Out of the three, she's the one who's the biggest threat as well - the Black Hand uses a bow more than the katana, so it'll not deal good damage and the axe user can be avoided easily by rolling. After her, kill the black hand. Then the axe one can be easily dealt with. Crystal Sage encounter is easy to deal with Bows. Just stay on the ladder in the upper floor (the ladder is before the Candle enemy near the two hollow slaves with one who throws firebombs on the top floor of the archives near the top balcony) and shoot them beware though the crystal homing spell with track you so dodge that when necessary. The teleportation is telegraphed depending on where you shoot (if you shoot when it's on the right part it'll teleport to the left and vice versa).Keep Rapport handy. It'll help in dealing with the Lothric Knights and the golden ascended Winged Knights massively. Rapport uses only 30 FP and has not so high INT requirement to be used, so any class should be able to get it with minor investment. If flask allotment is all Estus, the Aldrich's Sapphire ring will help in recovering the lost FP in just two backstabs after rapporting. So bring it if you want to breeze through the tougher part of this area.Don't parry the Outrider if you aren't good with parrying. Outrider's attacks are actually hard to see coming and super fast so parrying requires extra precision than usual. Best way to defeat is to dodge roll to it's back and spam 2-3 hits, rinse & repeat.

First playthrough, Int/Fai both on 25 and Pyromancy Flame on lvl 6. Toxic dealt 17 dmg per tick, poison 5.

                                                                          • Anonymous

You can run into the middle of the room, then head back out to the goddarn bonfire and still you get hit (through the walls) by some crystal b*******. Get your hitboxes right, From.Noticed a similar problem with the crossbow-archers in Lothric castle (just by the way).

                                                                            • Anonymous

I find the choice of enemies here pretty interesting, to be honest. Scholars are meant to be there, covered in wax, walking amongst those curse-rotten books of arcane profaned Darkness. And thieves are everywhere in Lothric now. Lothric knights are also in place, as it is a part of Lothric castle (however Scholars, one of three Pillars of Might in Lothric, did have some arguments with its second Pillar - those Lothric knights in particular; how came those were allowed to guard the Archive is yet unknown).Ascended Winged Knights are also logically placed, guarding their Goddess, Gertrude, trapped in a fine cage on top of the Archives. Although her figure in DS3, and origins of said Knights, is hidden behind a veil of mystery. At least for now. Here comes the interesting part. Gargoyles. Those are the incarnations of Profaned magic, silent and vicious sentinels of the Profaned Capital buried deep beneath the world's surface, and its greed. So, what is their business in the Archives? The very top section of libraries in the Archives is still awaiting its consumption by the Darkness and Profaned artifacts, as there are no "cursed" books up there. I would assume this part was not consumed by the Scholars (and by the Big Hat Logan himself - this figure will be mentioned a bit later), and thus was guarded by Gargoyles - in order to preserve the library from thieves and other trespassers. The only reason why said gargoyles - spawns without mind and will of their own - would fleet their Capital and advance to this almighty Hight: they were forced to come here, or were lead as bodyguards. Who did that? The only one who could bind Profaned Will according to his own intentions: Logan the Big Hat. There is another fact that points at his figure: one of the Crystal Sages is here. And they are known to be the scholars of Logan himself. In fact, his first scholars. One of them is found in Crucifixion Woods, area that is connected with the Painted World of Ariamis somehow - but that is another story. The other one is left guarding the Archive - a divine source of knowledge for Logan and other mages alike. So, to sum up: Gargoyles were guarding the arcane knowledge which took Logan too long to comprehend - he presumably died in process (if that guy in Profaned Capital is not him, but his descendant). Archives are connected very close, and in a sinister way, with the infamous Profaned Flame. I would suggest proceeding to the Ashen Hollow's theories on that topic, as this post is already a bit long. Then, we have Corvians. There is a small group of the crow-people praising their Storyteller on top of the Archives. Again, what are they doing there? I would never believe the Sage in Woods sent this as a reminder present to his comrade in Archives. As I speculated on the Crucifixion Woods' wiki page, these guys are likely to be the inhabitants of the long-forgotten Painted World of Ariamis. It was demolished by the same universe-bending forces which caused Lothric castle to ascend high above the mortal ground. I have no rational theories on their presence in the Archives: assuming they somehow teleported from their world in an act of despair is not an option here. All in all, the Archive is not just a huge library with angry books and hilarious scholars. It is shrouded in a very sinister mystery, bound with betrayal and sin. A very nice contrast with the heavenly creature once inhabiting the cage on its very top.

                                                                              • Anonymous

The simple use of hidden body can make this easier than anything else. Just pop hidden body then walk up and pelt him with two dung pies then retreat to safety. Rinse and repeat this twice and then he'll drop dead.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Granted she never ripostes but 3 times in a row she parried my attacks (tried sprinting, rolling and regular) and then a fourth that finished her was still parried. ***** off with NPCs and their parries.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I was curious and tried a couple of different things. He only teleports after taking a direct hit, like weapons, spells, throwing knifes etc. when poisoning him with poison/toxic mist he never teleports and is easily killable that way (took 3 toxic mists in NG+)

                                                                                    • half the game's missing maps and the one for this area has all these letter markers but there's nothing showing what these things are.my brother even borrowed my ps4 for like 2 weeks and still no new maps.. at all..

                                                                                      • Anonymous

It's possible to dispose of them easily by sneaking up behind them and throwing dung pies until the toxic procs. This will not aggro the other NPC-mobs, and will allow you to take them down easily. Best way to do this is to run straight by them when you fist meet, and take the elevator down, rest at bonfire, then go back up and throw dung pies from behind.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

This area proved to be the best place to farm souls late game that I found. All you do is repeatedly run from the initial bonfire, up through the levels of the archive, killing every candle wax scholar you can. When you exit the dark room, take the stairs on the left, continue along, anddrop down onto the bridge you killed the Chrystal Sage at. Progress to the room with multiple book shelves and 4 scholars. Once you clear this room, use the Charred Sword Fragment to return to the bonfire and go again until you have the desired number of souls. This is made a lot faster by combining the Silver Serpent ring and Shield of Want. With this, each "lit" scholar will give over 3,500 souls when killed. Each of these runs I made netted roughly 50,000 souls. It's quick, it's easy, and if you use the wax pool at the beginning of the run, it will last the entire run until you get back to go again. No need to worry about cursed books. Once you do this enough it becomes quite difficult to get killed.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Repeat it a few times (3 for me) then he should die without teleporting away

                                                                                            • Anonymous

(Needs confirmation) This happened for me. Might've been a crazy timing where an enemy fell of or something.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

All of them dropped Large Titanite Shards for me. And they do respawn, sadly. Anyone else have this happen? Just want to make sure the guide is correct for everyone

You can dip your Head in it it makes you IMMUNE against the CURSED BOOKS.Don't worry, your Wax-Head doesn't override your Head-armorslot and its not Permanent.
