Great Hammers are one of the largest weapon types in the game. They have a slower movesets but feature high damage and are an intimidating choice for players. They also have the highest poise damage of any weapon class in the game, with 45 poise damage on a regular two handed light attack. Great Hammers also cannot be parried two-handed, with the exception of the rolling and running attack.

Personally, I love hammers. They might be slow, yes. But there’s something undeniably good about it when you hit something and deal like 700 damage

      • Anonymous

I literally don't understand the complaint about speed when ds3 is basically cross-platform bloodborne. If you used r2 i might understand it, but that button just gathers dust with the r1 spam being so proficient in all weapons.

        • Anonymous

I hate smough's, morne's, and ledo's. Because of the damage? No. The poise? No. The range? No.

It's because the things clips seven miles below sea level when you swing them. Why from :(

          • Anonymous

Man, i wish they put a more classic greathammer here. Like the ones those fat guys in ds2's earthen peak had.

            • Anonymous

Never been a fan of this weapon type. Swing is just ungodly slow. Hit R1 once at maximum range and you get backstabbed. Even outside of PVP there's little reason to use this over, say, a Greataxe (better damage) or an Ultra Greatsword (better speed and reach).

Which one of these is the best? I'm sl 206 with 60 str and 40/40 fth and int( yes im a pyro) and for the longest time I've been rocking a +10 heavy exile gs with carthus flame arc but lately I've been getting bored of it. I found that I was getting stun locked alot more often in PVE and PVP(mainly PVE) and the range was starting to become a problem as I entered ng+4. I then realised that great hammers have GOD LIKE POISE AND DAMAGE AND A WA THAT LITERALLY MAKES YOU INVINCIBLE FOR A FEW SECONDS so I decided I might try one out. Any suggestions? (Excluding the DLCs)

                  • Anonymous

Im trying to do a arthas build with faith and a great hammer in strenght but i cant seem to find the right hammer for that. Which would be the best one for the fashion-souls?

                    • Anonymous

I know, stat wise, that the Great Wooden Hammer is the weakest, but it's the funniest one (because it lets you smack enemies around with a cartoon mallet), which to me makes it the best one.

                      • Anonymous

So I never used Greathammers before. I don't really like their slow movement but on the other hand I'm currently using a Lothric Knight Greatsword so... It's basically the same time per swing. What I was about to say, I'm going to my 9th journey (so basically NG+9) soon with my no limit character and want to know, which Hammer should I try? I really like the look of Mornes or Quakestone and their WA but they can't be buffed. I have 60 in all stats so which one is the best? Infused or uninfused doesn't matter, just want to know what's an overall good choice. As I said, never used Greathammers so some advice would be welcome.

                        • Anonymous

Skilled player: no you can't just go full heavy with a greathammer, learn to parry and dodge. Me: great club go whomp whomp whomp

                          • Anonymous

Useless in 1v1s other than in specific situations like if they're using a slow weapon too. Only ones possible to fight 1v1s with are Ledo's, the great club, Morne's and maybe the gargoyle flame spear because reach and aimable weapon skill. They're pretty good in ganks since every gank tries to stay close together so they can attack through each other to infini-stunlock you.

                            • Anonymous

i love how i still can't parry straight swords, but parried morne hammer rolling attack flawless first try.

                              • Anonymous

The gyrm greathammer (the anvil one) could've been a thing, along with SO many other things from DS2, but NOOOO...

                                • So, im trying to make a Thor PVP/PVE build [not necessarily the Marvel Comics version], with obviously a very heavy focus on heavy armor, good catalyst, high faith for lightning miracles, and high strength for good hammers. That being said, im not quite sure what equipment i should go with to make this build a real powerhouse...does anybody have any suggestions?

                                  • Anonymous

hilarious when you see your pvp opponent pull out a caestus or parrying shield. Just walk up and do a predicable two handed r1 repeatedly as they fail parry.

                                    • So I was checking out the quakestone hammer and I noticed in the wiki pages notes a claim that its the third strongest greathammer and a comment contradicting that claim. That lead me to check ARs of every greathammer there is which in return lead me to list them out, because it would have been too much to memorize them all, to compare them. I decided I should share this so I included some things that might affect what weapon to pick. As for the stats I got the values with, 66 str is obvious and I'm not going to explain it, dex is 13 for spiked mace's requirement and fth 30 for Morne's. The dex didn't affect many, if any, other weapon's ARs but because of the 30 fth Gargoyle flame hammer and old king's greathammer have higher AR than with pure str investment, so keep that in mind. With those settled heres the list.

                                      Details:
                                      str: 66
                                      dex: 13
                                      fth: 30
                                      2 handed, max upgraded
                                      infusable weapons are heavy infused
                                      *=buffable
                                      additional notes in brackets
                                      values from mugenmonkey

                                      AR:

Miyazaki: Guys what do we do about Ultra great weapons?
Dev: Don't improve their speed or stamina consumption from the previous games at all, make them all exactly the same, just give some of them a super cool big explody aoe weapon art that will only hit people with 1 braincell and does disappointing damage.
                                        Miyazaki:Beautiful.

Miyazaki: Hey guys time for the DLC, we've already added some really cool light weapons like Friede's Great scythe, Valorheart and the Crow Quills, what should we do about Ultra Great Weapons?
Dev: Make them the same as all the other Ultras, just give both of them a super cool big explody aoe weapon art that will only hit people with 1 braincell and does disappointing damage.

Anyone notice that ultra Greatswords use more stamina than the great hammers. I can do only one light attack and one heavy attack with the Astora Greatsword. But with a great club I can one light attack and two heavy attacks. This is was tested with a deprived character with 10 endurance and 30 str/dex.

                                            • Anonymous

You can combo great hammer 1-handed light attacks into a jumping strong. Deals way more damage than two r1s. Was using the Dragon Tooth while testing it out but it might work for other great hammers.

                                              • Anonymous

Don't bother investing in these. A heavy broadsword with the stats to use these weapons will always out-DPS them, cost less stamina, and weigh much less.

                                                • Anonymous

For example, could this list be set up like the individual weapons are with options to choose upgrade path and to view weapons at 40/40 or 99/99.Also, could special effects (like stamina regen) of weapons and armor be added to these pages?

                                                  • Anonymous

In DS3 you cannot parry with your bare left hand if you wield a greathammer in your right. You'll activate the special ability instead. Only option is to equip a fist weapon like the Cestus or the zero weight alternative, the Dark Hand from Yuria, if you have trouble to avoid the fat role mark at 70%.

                                                    • Anonymous

So in pvp getting hit once means getting hitting twice, You can't roll away. and since if has such a strong stamina drain on shields if you block the second most likely you are getting guard broken. So what are you supposed to do? Just eat the second hit? That most times means if you have less than 70% getting hit by light attack means death.
