Great Scythe is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



Attacks with this large scythe, normally used for crop harvesting, are effective at breaking past shields.

The magnificent sharp curved blade instills fear in opponents. Perhaps it is their survival instinct at work.

Skill: Neck Swipe
This attack aims for the scruff of a foe's neck, and when successful, functions as a head shot, inflicting heavy damage.



Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • Has innate shield pierce: 40% on all attacks and 80% on the weapon art.
  • Has a "Sweet Spot" meaning if the play hit with the pole part of the weapon it does 5% less damage, conversely if the player hits with the blade they deal 3% more damage. 

 

 

Location/Where to Find

  • Looted from Undead Settlement in a destroyed building near the rain of giant arrows and the White Birch Tree.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

      Kinda hilarious how the sweet spot mechanic works here. If you hit just right with the blade, you deal slash damage wich is useful against any regular enemy in this game from lothric high wall to abyss watchers, but if you miss the sweet spot and hit with the hilt, you deal strike damage wich is extra effective against armor, skeletons, crabs, etc. The damage penalty from missing the sweet spot it's insignificant enough to ignore it completely just because it's strike damage.

        In ds1 it was my best damage dealer weapon! High str dex and fai (40/40/40) finished ng7 with this weapon only but in ds3 its not the same I miss the moveset from ds1.

          The weapon is actually really fun in pvp, it’s got a cool move set, and the bleed is very handy when dealing with sheilds. I put on the robe and hood of prayer, so now I look like a true grim reaper (:

            This weapon is complete trash and failing in living up to its former glory days. I feel bad for any of you casuls who think this weapon is good, PKCS is the best weapon ever and you guys should start using it.

              I think the inputs for chaos or dark might be wrong. How does A/A scaling for dark give 231 AR, while B/B scaling give 241?

                Slashing with this weapon feels so satisfying, especially the sound it makes and pulling off bleed gives that extra oempff!

                  Best scythe.. could use this only in PvP very effectively if I wanted... Still I drop swamp ring for Havel's and mash 4 weps with the pyro flames.. unpredictable and counter playstyle more than make up for it

                    The sweet and sour spots seem to deal different damage types, testing on the giant crabs in crucifixion woods the sweet spot does far less damage than the sour spot since the crabs are strong against slash but weak to strike

                      This weapon is bugged. Actually deals strike damage of all things, despite saying it's a slash weapon. As that's the least resisted damage type in the the game, it's ugh... still only an a B-tier weapon in my book. Like it was before.

                        I am wanting to use the Great Scythe with a Crystal infuse and basically go for a battle mage build. I am not very good with how gems hurt and help scaling yet. using my magic to punish foes from afar but be able to also fight up close. The Great Scythe has a pretty nasty sweet spot with it's range, or so I feel. Thoughts?

                          Scythes are so underrated, I'm surprised they aren't meta. You have a weapon with slightly slower swing speed of a straight sword, but slightly greater damage than a straight sword and the range of a halberd. It's a a fast weapon so its surprisingly easy to catch great weapon users early on during wind-up frames of attack animation and stagger them. And it pierces shields like no tomorrow at least 80-94 damage pierced per swing compared to shotels, which deal average 37 damage per swing. People also don't realize they are best utilized at <30% equip load. You long roll out of an attack, walk back for half a second and use normal attack. The distance is a sweet spot, just out of range of even UGS weapons when you time attacks right. This weapon especially is great for any spell build.

                              Is something wrong here? it says simple infusion looks like it out powers a lot of other infusions damage wise. 210 magic damage plus scaling?!

                                The damage type switches based on range. Hitting with the blade portion deals slash damage, and hitting with the handle does impact. This was tested on the cage enemies in Dungeon, and the difference in damage is staggering. I just wanted to show the rest of you and have someone update the wiki for it.

                                    Quick quesiton - the upgrade table for both this and the Covian Great Scythe say that it causes high bleed aux when hollowed, even more so than when bleed infused. Is this true, or a typo (or not factoring in luck bonus from hololowing into scaling)? Because I'd love to run a hollowed build based around scythes

                                      I just fought against a player with a cathedral knight greatshield buffed with (great?) magic shield. He was also using the whole cathedral knight set.Using a sharp +10 with lightning pine resin and 40 dex 16 str, I did around 100 damage at the sweet spot.Outside of the sweet spot, it was 4 damage.(SL92)So, even if your opponent has basically 100% resist on all damage sources with his shield, you can still do quite a bit of damage.Anyway, I'm really enjoying this weapon, and I manage to win some fights and hold myself against good players (I'm not really good at PvP).

                                        * Try out your 'sweet spot' range on enemies and get comfortable with your weapon before you jump into tough positions. Zoning is hugely important to your success with a Reaper; you want to know your range at all times. * The two handed R2 is faster than the R1 without being 'charged,' and should be your leadoff strike to opponents ahead of you or in tight spaces. * A backstep before one handed attacks is a great way create your space for the sweetspot and avoid the typical reprisal on the long windup. * Reapers in DS3 aren't what the Lifehunt Scythe used to be; bleed is bonus damage for big enemies but should not be relied upon for people or small mobs.

                                          I've rubbed as close as possible to some enemies and attacked at max range to test it and I've never experienced the 20% decrease in damage.

                                          • Article notes that this weapon has bleed damage despite it not being listed on the weapon itself. Has anyone managed to test this effectively?I've datamined the weapon and see no indication of any bleed mechanics. It shares the same moveset as the Great Scythe which does have a describable on-hit bleed effect listed in the game files.

                                              It seems that great scythe is really strong against skeleton enemies. normal mobs get cut in half by r1s and have to reasemble. and the red eyed ones are knocked down by r2. Makes the catacombs way smoother

                                                just finished a sharp +10 and with scaling at 40 dex and fire from the pyro spell and im putting out about 420-510 with L2 sweet spot its a fun reasonable weapon for most of the game

                                                • It can bypass shields with 100% physical block for some damage still. Seen people with Havels greatshield, and it still hits for about 175 if you hit it just right with the blade. The roll r1 two-handed is easy to pull it off with. Same with the r1->r2 combo.

                                                  • If you are running a Dex build (like me) infuse it with a sharp stone and it becomes quite the weapon. It actually is my best weapon currently with an A scaling in Dex after the infusion, Just takes a little practice to learn some good combos and the range.
