Horace's Questline

Horace is a companion to Anri of Astora, and will turn hostile after you progress into the Catacombs.

To locate Horace again, continue the game past the Abyss Watchers. Head into the Catacombs of Carthus and find Anri who will ask you about Horace's location. If you speak to Anri here and tell them "NO", She/He will move further into the Catacombs by an old bridge. You can speak to Anri again here, but it is not necessary. Horace is located in another area across the bridge. Once there cut the rope on the bridge by hitting it with your weapon, wait for it to collapse, and then climb down. Past the Fire Demon is a bonfire, and past the bonfire is Smouldering Lake. In Smouldering Lake hug the right wall until you see a small passageway with two Crystal Lizards. Horace will be at the back of this area and will be hostile. You can see a map here.

If you kill him here, he will give you the Llewellyn Shield. If you kill him, it won't matter if you tell Anri where he is. Anri's questline will continue and you will receive the Ring of the Evil Eye in the Catacombs or at Anri's next location. If you don't kill him and tell Anri, Anri will be killed and their questline will end. If you don't kill him, but don't tell Anri his location, Anri's questline will continue.

  • If you kill Horace before speaking to Anri in his/her first location in the Catacombs, she/he will only be found at the second location.

Drops

  • Souls: NG (2000), NG+ (6000), NG++ (??), NG+3 (??), NG+6 (??), NG+9 (??)
  • Weapons: Llewellyn Shield
  • If killed in the Firelink Shrine, where he will be after the player defeat the Deacons of the Deep, he will drop 10000 souls, but this action will terminate Anri's questline, therefore it's not recommended.

Dialogue

Horace the Hushed does not have specific dialogue lines. Instead, he only makes what sounds like a low growl or grunt when spoken to.

Trivia

  • Horace would seem to be a member of the Blue Sentinels.
  • The shield Horace uses was made by Llewellyn The Smith, who also created the armor worn by the two Drang Knights protecting Aldrich.  The Drang Set is from Dark Souls II, where it was called the Llewellyn Set.
  • Horace might have ironically been named after the leading Roman lyric poet under the same name. Roman name (and link to Wikipedia): Quintus Horatius Flaccus
  • Miyazaki, a huge fan of the manga Berserk, may have been inspired by the character Basuzo's armor design in making the Executioner Set.
  •  Horace is one of two children to survive Aldrich's appetite
  • If you kill Horace and tell Anri where he is, then return to his location in the Smoldering Lake after Anri has left, there will be a small shrine with his broken halberd, shield, and a red prism stone on top, indicating that Anri found his body and laid him to rest (Anri says earlier that they leave prism stones for each other, to guide their way). Interestingly, if you meet Anri at the Yorshka bonfire, she/he will still say that they never found Horace.
  • The vocalizations Horace makes are like those made by individuals whose tongues have been cut out, indicating that Horace may be a survivor of an encounter with Rosaria's Fingers.

If you manage to get the camera close to his face you can see he has no eyes but only dark holes, impying he is heavily hollowed(easiest on first meeting at crucifixion woods). I assume beening cut too long from his "ancor" Anri pushed him over the edge and gave him the rest.Rest easy valliant knight - I slayed Aldrich with Anri in your honor! o7

After I laid this poor soul to rest in Smouldering Lake, I bought the Executioner's set, a halberd and equipped that neat little shield. Time to dive into Anor Londo and parasocially make Anri's dream come true

I didn't enter the cathedral of the deep, haven't killed the deacons. I talked to them in Halfway Fortress and even though I moved through the entirety of the catacombs, neither of them showed up. I checked several times (always after already having killed Wolnir). Anri is not in Halfway Fortress, not in Firelink, not in the Catacombs and I haven't killed Horace (I don't have his shield, that's how I know.)
So, somehow, I have never met this guys after Halfway Fortress.

warning! this guy has a high poop resistance.. I got him to 10 hp or so, threw 10 dungs and he did not get infected with TOXIC! If you happen to be the poop man, avoid this guy at all costs!!!

            • Anonymous

I'm doing my first playthrough now, and Anri was never in the Catacombs, even though I spoke to both of them earlier. *shrug*

Found this mother****er in poundering lake, ignored him, went back to Anri and told his location to her. Came back to see if she was still there, found her sword and ring. First thing I thought was "I gotta kill this traitor mother****er with Anri's Sword"

                • It's weird that you can tell Anri about Horace being at the Lake even if he's dead. She even responds as though she can just go meet up with him. That's only the case if he ISN'T dead, but her dialog is the same either way. An obvious oversight on the developers' part.

Bazuso's armor is the idea for the Winged Knights / Golden Winged Knights. The wing shape from the golden ones comes from Mozgus' apostle form.

I told anri I'm only wearing his armor as a cosplay Horace is perfectly fine and heathy (not really hes dead)

I know they are from different fandoms but when I meet a guy called horace I just know he’s going to end up going traitor sooner or later

Hey new player here, I got invaded while talking to anri after the road of sacrifices and before I could talk to horace the invader showed up and killed me. Am I locked out of the blue sentinels covenant or can I get if from him at firelink after the deacons boss? Thank you for any help!

                          • Anonymous

I went back to the cave where I killed Horace, and there is a big red glowing orb that I can’t interact with. Any ideas?

I feel like I am going insane - I swear I somehow once summoned Horace as a co op npc in the catacombs just before the bridge, but this was years ago, and I have no idea what I did to make this happen, and have never seen any info of this being possible anywhere. Has anybody else ever seen this?

                              • Anonymous

Okay seriously, I just had him speak.
At the halfway fortress bonfire. Talked to him nad got the blue sentinels covenant, but hadnt closed that box yet and spoke to him again. He then started talking about where you are and where the path leads! Will tweet out video and post link if I can

Hey guys, anyone know what happens if you kill Horace at the halfway fortress and leave Anri alive? Thank you!!

                                  • Anonymous

Here's a thought, Horace was probably trapped in the lake by the pilgrim following Anri in order to get her alone. That or she was pushed into the trap she mentions by the same pilgrim. Doing so in order to separate them, and Horace goes mad being alone in the catacombs with nothing but skeletons.

                                    • Anonymous

fun fact, if you go through catacombs of carthus all the way to the point where it would stop you if you didnt do deacons yet, go back to kill deacons. Then when you return to firelink, Anri and Horace will be there. if you kill them both, Horace will be at the spot where he goes hollow in smoldering lake. Anri will not be in catacombs nor at the church of yorshka. This implies that you fail the quest not from them dying, but because you didnt talk to him/her during catacombs.

so he becomes hostile when I reach catacombs. does that mean when I light that bonfire? if that's the case, if I don't light that bonfire will he still be aggroed after cata?

                                        • Anonymous

So, is his hollowing not at the Halfway Fortress? I randomly get like 40-80 souls every time I reload the area with him there

                                          • Anonymous

maybe the real reason horace went hollow is because hes mute think about it anri and horace do get separated from time to time, evident by the prism stone she lays down so that they may find each other horace, this time is at the bottom of the bridge, and if you cross the bridge chances are you can't see down below and looking under a bridge is most likely a place many would not think about looking since horace is assumed to be mute, it's possible he can't yell very loudly and so he starts to lose his mind, stuck under a bridge, fearing that he may never get out or meet up with anri again, and alone in the dark

                                            • Anonymous

I killed Horace in firelink shrine and he still appeared in smouldering lake. The only difference was that he didn’t drop the shield as it was already dropped in the shrine

Sorry but what the hell does this guy have to do with bazuso? Like maybe not everything in this series is a berzerk reference??? This guy who wrote the berzerk "lore theory" page is self promoting harder than an instagram rapper

                                                • Anonymous

I don't personally wanna believe that Horace got hollowed by accident although it's possible along with falling from the bridge with that heavy Armour too I've seen some theories but there are a few that have more chance to be true Clearly Yuria was chasing after Anri right after the death of abyss watchers and the start of catacombs of carthus and probably even before that at some point, it was easier for her to catch Anri alone and disparate when she's already going hollow too so I have two theories I'll start big and make it more detailed The first one that he has never gone hollow and it wasn't actually Horace in that Armour, maybe that's what Yuria wanted us to think that they're both going hollow and she succeeds by letting Anri think Horace has abandoned her or just dead and letting her going hollow for their progress, I read a few comments reporting of a bug that they've killed Horace in firelink shrine and he still appeared in smouldering lake The second one that she separated them by the traps and letting us think it was caused by the environment and natural causes of the place, and Yuria knowing he would go to the end of smouldering lake to find Anri by the door where she knows he would fall off the bridge with his heavy Armour and the skeletons following him and then getting him hollow or cursed as she's connected with pilgrims and dark magic it wouldn't be a problem which makes sense or maybe just telling him what they're gonna do with Anri and getting him mad and hollow or maybe he's not actually gone hollow thinking that we're doing this on purpose with Yuria to kill and marry Anri and so he starts attacking us

                                                  • Anonymous

"Horace might have ironically been named after the leading Roman lyric poet under the same name" Based on what? Does the moron who wrote this know that lots and lots of people are named Horace all over the world? "Miyazaki, a huge fan of the manga Berserk, may have been inspired by the character Basuzo's armor design in making the Executioner Set" When did he say he's a "huge fan"? And since when he's a character designer?

                                                    • Anonymous

i killed the abyss watchers then proceed to the catacombs, but didn't killed the crystal sage so horace/anri didn't appear in the catacombs at all, so how do i get horace set?

                                                      • Anonymous

Some dialogue from Yuria after killing Horace: "Our Order and Liege. Knowest thou of a maid named Anri? She is Hollow, and will join thee in wedlock. A fellow of mine guides her at this moment. When the time is ripe, thou mayst make thy salutations. For what Lord taketh no spouse?" implying that Horace was working for Yuria.

                                                        • By the way, I never spoke to Anria In the first location(In Catacombs) then found Horace but ran away(because I wanted to see if he wsa at the bonfire). I then searched up this page and looked for Anri to find her at her second location, even though I haven't killed Horace(and can see him below while talking to Anri) and I haven't spoken to Anrio from her first Catacombs location

                                                          • Anonymous

so i just did cathedral of the deep and i got Anri as a summon, not Horace. now when im in the Carthus ruins i cant find her anywhere... i want to go to the smoldering lake but if i need to kill him down there i doubt he'll be there either.

                                                            • Anonymous

Something I just discovered: if you kill Horace, reload the area, then tell anri, and then go to where Horace died without reloading the area, a prism stone is already on the grave. Deepest lore?

                                                              • Hurl a handful of Dung Pies at him, cast Poison Mist for a bit of extra damage, then run away from him like a Crystal Lizard while his health plummets.

                                                                • Anonymous

Actually ***** fighting this guy and anri at the road of sacrifices. They both constantly rush you down at the same time and have very high health and damage, if you agro them you're as good as *****ing dead. I feel only pure salt towards that god damn fight.

                                                                  • Anonymous

You can kill Horace from the area next to Anri and the collapsible bridge if you throw fire bombs at him, and if you fall into the pit and go back to Anri, you can tell them where Horace is, since falling down there counts as being in the area for that. That being said, it's much easier to simply run down there and kill him up close. Crossbows and regular bows don't have enough range to do any damage from what I could tell, but the millwood bow can probably kill him with the weapon art.

                                                                    • Anonymous

For any who question why Horace does what he does, you can get a dialogue from yuria, that came after her kill orbeck suggestion. This talk evolved after telling and I no and no, then I killed Horace. Then back to firelink.

                                                                      • Anonymous

If Horace escaped Aldrich, does that mean he would have spent time in the Cathedral of the Deep before Aldrich was taken to Anor Lando? If so, I wonder if that would explain why he doesn't talk. Maybe someone in the Cathedral took his tongue as an offering to Rosaria?

                                                                        Oh, now I'm sad. :(

                                                                        • Anonymous

So it turns out you can snipe Horace in Smoldering Lake from the Catacombs. Does killing him this way bug out Anri's Quest?

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

So, interesting bug, I killed him and Anri at firelink after the Deacons, but he still showed up under the catacombs. Dropped his souls, but not a second shield.

                                                                              • Anonymous

I think he is already hollow when you first meet him. He doesnt "talk" like a hushed person, but rather like a classical hollow undead. I further think, that he is in a quite hollowed state when you first meet him, which will continue to make him completely insane later.
He also, which underlines his forthcoming insanity due to hollowing, keeps attacking dead enemies when being summoned.
It seems that he is helping Yuria to achieve the wedding ceremony. But thats only one of a few possibilities.

So let me create a possible backstory explanation here for that part, just what i think could be some possibilities to what happened and a conclusion of some possible reasons as to why it ended this way:
He is hushed, ok so far, he also decides to go for Aldrich together with Anri. Maybe he meets Yuria and probably gets him to get a dark sigil.
Maybe even in a similar way Yoel does it, unleashing power in Horace which causes him to get hollow but also stronger. He might have agreed for this path to become strong enough to kill Aldrich or he was trapped and forced to do it at one point (remember that there are Hollows serving Yuria not only as Assassins).
He might have accepted a plan that involves the wedding ceremony. Him being in the Smoldering Lake area could mean several things, for example that he knew he would go insane soon and searched for a place where Anri would never find him (mind, Anri would to be able to pass a Firedemon, several Skeletons and find a hidden cave, in a lake with a giant worm and a siege weapon. Its unlikely she would find him alone.).
Probably to save her from him.
It could also be that he searched for power to get stronger (for example a weapon or a power hidden in this Area, mind that there is strong pyromancy to be found in smoldering lake, among Demonic Power) and be able to kill Aldrich, got lost or trapped and then went insane.
Another possibility is that he slipped and fell off the bridge above, possibly making him insane due to the fall or he couldnt find his way back. Although he would have rather died from such a fall i guess, but since there is some water he might have survived such a fall but knocked his head or whatever. Would be a weak explanation but also a quite logical one. Just remember how you are able to reach Smoldering Lake. Yeah right, you have to destroy the bridge and use it as a ladder to get to the lower level.
Which means, since the bridge is intact, he must have found a different way to reach that cave, the only way to reach it other than going down the ladder, past a firedemon and many skeletons, is to fall down.

So for Horace there are several options to what was his path. Either all was unintentional and an accident that he got lost there, went insane. But that lacks the explanation as to why he would go insane at all if he wasnt hollow. Except ofcourse he really fell down that wonky bridge and hits his head or so, then no hollowing would be needed.
The second option is that he went to the place intentional to search for something and either found it or something went wrong (or maybe even someone trapped him there so he cant help Anri anymore and caused that he goes hollow). He could also have been gone there intentionally to prevent that he will harm Anri in his insanity and he couldnt prevent it otherwise, only with hidding in a secret area she wouldnt search for him. He might be hollow due to several reasons, such as fighting a servant of Rosaria, losing his tongue that way when losing or so and then get hollow, his hollowing then proceeding and the first time the player meets him he is at brink of going insane.
The last is that he was part of a plan to begin with, probably if so Yuria and the Hollows to achieve whatever.

All of these sound possible to me and also logical, not much left that could have happened beside these few things aswell.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

I don't know if this is a bug, or something common, but I've noticed that Horace is the only NPC that when summoned is still attacking the enemies when they're already dead. Before the Deacons of the Deep boss fight I summoned him to kill the Catedral Knights and he kept attacking the dead body of one, and then when we killed the boss he kept swinging his halberd. Maybe it has something to do with his lore, idk.

The prism stone on the shrine in Smouldering Lake is a BLUE shining stone. I never went back there before, I saw a blue shinny thing down ffrom on the bridge so I went to see what it was. Anybody else got the blue one ?

                                                                                        • Anonymous

He's a Blue Sentinel, so he's most likely missing his tongue from a Dark Spirit fight. Just another take on it.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

This is something I haven't seen anyone else share, but after I met with Anri at the second Catacomb location, went down to kill Horace, and hurried back up to her, I couldn't find her where she was and instead a pale stone that changes color when you reset the area was in her place (probably for Horace to find her). I did find her in Boreal Valley near the bonfire where the pilgrim is but this was really odd for me to see with no one else mentioning this.

                                                                                            • After meeting Anri in the Church of Yorshka she says she's doing what she's doing for the children she knew. Not literal children. But the two he escaped from Aldrich's clutches. Her mentor, Horace, and someone else, unmentioned throughout the game.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I'd say its more likely this is a Berserk reference to the character Griffith rather than Bazuso. Although his helmet is round, its not meant to resemble his. (Berserk spoilers ahead) Instead, he wears what looks an awful lot like a torture mask, while the character Griffith has his signature helmet redesigned into a torture mask when he has his tongue cut out amongst many other nasty things. Just a thought.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

After taking care of the giant avelyn, we dropped down and went to fight Horace. I was able to see Horace's location as a ghost and he would actually block my movement to some degree, but I was unable to harm him in anyway. I don't know if it makes any difference or not that I had already killed Horace in my world.
