Pontiff's Right Eye

Bewitched ring that Pontiff Sulyvahn bestowed upon his knights.

Boosts attacks, as long as attacking persists.

Knights who peer into the black orb are lured into battles of death, transformed into frenzied beasts. No wonder the Pontiff only provides these rings to those dispatched to foreign lands.

Pontiff's Right Eye is a Ring in Dark Souls 3.

Pontiff's Right Eye Effect

  • Boosts Attack Rating, as long attacking persists.
    • Initial boost is 3%, then 5%, and maxes out at 10%
  • Weight: 1.4

Where to Find Pontiff's Right Eye

  • Located in the Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. The giant Sulyvahn's Beast you face the first time crossing the bridge. Defeating this enemy rewards you this ring.
  • If you run past this enemy the first time you meet it, through the barrier on the other side of the bridge, it will stop spawning there. It will appear later in the water-filled area past Yorshka's church, where you can kill it and loot the ring.

Notes

  • Will boost attack power after every 3-5 hits, depending on weapon type, table listed below.
  • When triggered, the following occurs:
    • Red character aura
    • Sound effect plays
    • Upward Sword status Icon appears under Stamina Bar.
  • If attacking stops, the boost will decrease and eventually end.
  • Stacks with Carthus Beacon & Old Wolf Curved Sword
  • BowsCrossbows, and Magic seem unable to increase the buff.

Testing Methodology

  • Test character used 40 END, Chloranthy Ring +2 and Ring of Favor +2 for stamina. Was proficient in every weapon used for testing.

Notes for Damage

  • Damage was tested via backstab to get consistent damage. The increase is in attack-rating, which is why some weapons benefit more from the buff. It seems to increase in 3 steps; first acquired at immediate proc, a second step at around 10 hits, and a last stage at 14 hits. Here are 3 weapons tested at their different stages.
Weapon Backstab Damage

Mailbreaker Unbuffed

186
Mailbreaker @ 5 hits 194
Mailbreaker @ 10 hits 198
Mailbreaker @ 15 hits 210

Scimitar Unbuffed

136
Scimitar @ 5 hits 140
Scimitar @ 10 hits 143
Scimitar @ 15 hits 151
Cestus Unbuffed 100
Cestus @ 5 hits 102
Cestus @ 10 hits 107
Cestus @ 15 hits 110

  • As seen in the graph above for research, the damage buff is inconsistent. The first buff varies between 3-6% from normal, second buff varies between 7-8% from normal, and the max buff varies between 10-13% from normal. Very inconsistent damage increase. Source of damage increase unknown, but the general scaling seems to be in the range of 10-15% for max buff.
  • Addendum to the above: The buff is to AR which is why it seems inconsistent. A 5% increase in AR will mean a bigger damage increase to a weapon that does more damage than one that doesn't.

ran past the beast on the bridge, killed in water area, did not get ring. now im locked out of it for the NG ig :/

If tried this with different weapons and builds and it seems to literally add a standard 10 damage to overall AR each time. Pretty crappy tbh.

I'm curious if there's some incorrect info in the chart. I was using the Demon Fists for fun with this ring and noticed that a single rolling L1 attack will give you the first buff, and in general I seem to stack it pretty easy.

I went ahead and tested with the Cestus to be sure, and sure enough a single rolling L1 gives you the first buff off the bat, and the 2-handed light is 3 hits to get the first buff. I wonder if it was stealth buffed at a later patch?

One thing to keep in mind.
The strike that procs the attack DOES NOT get the benefit. So if Third strike of a weapon procs the attack the benefit starts from Forth strike. This could be a deal breaker for heavy weapons that capitalize on each hits.

Say for Instance I buff with lightning blade/darkmoon blade, and use power within, will the ring increase damage further or no?

Sulyvahn(Sullivan) does NOT have anything to do with the word 'dark', its Irish form is comprised of the words 'súil' and 'amháin', which mean eye and one. So, one-eyed. The Irish for dark is 'dorcha'.

How quick do you have to chain the hits for it to count? And how long does the buff last? Proccing it once takes my entire stamina bar. Need to wait for it to fill up but the buff is gone by then.

                  • Anonymous

That table is just wrong, who even tested this. Did you know a single L1 from RKGS will trigger the buff? That's because it's 2x1 UGS hits. UGS take two hits not one, and that's just for starters. The faster and lighter weapons needs much more hits. Half assed effort or outdated information

Why are people trying this ring with heavy weapons. More efficient with quicker weapons like gotthard sword with carthus beacon

Why do the damage increasing rings need to be so confusing & near useless in DS3? Remember the DS1 RTSR or DS2 Ring of Blades & Flynns Ring? Good times.

So I noticed when using this ring with my heavy Greatsword +4 that two normal hits trigger the red aura while one fully charged 2 triggers it as well. Is the buff actually determined by hits or DPS?

                          • I tested Pontiff's ring with Vordt's Great Hammer Light Attack against the knights in Anor Londo.

The buff starts on the second hit, not the third hit.
At the time I was SL65 with 34 STR, 30 Endurance and +3 Vordt.
                            First hit - 422 tooltip
                            Second Hit - 434 tooltip
                            Third hit - 443
                            Running to the second knight.
                            Fourth hit - 443
                            Fifth hit - 443 / 464
                            Sixth Hit - 464

The increase would be roughly 3%- 5% -10% in three stages for Great Hammers.
Running to the second knight takes 2-3 second. Which might have resulted in dropping in stages. That's probably why the third stage can happen on the Fifth or Sixth hit.
Thrid Stage doesn't happen on the fourth hit.
Although I only tested it with having my first hit blocked, but being blocked or not shouldn't affect it, as the first stage still activated on the second hit even whent he first hit got blocked.

Tried with OWCS + Pontiff right eye (1handed) can easyly go from 560 AR to 670 AR and with Cathus beacon go to around 750 in about 3 -4 hits
AR are aproximate since with the 3 buff the AR seems to be unstable (keep changing)

Broadsword user here. Went from 424 to 466 AR max, a 9.9% increase. However, resin buffs do not benefit from the ring :(

Does this work with elemental damage on melle weapon? For example, if you buff your weapon with lightning blade, after 3 hits, the lightning damage is buffed too? And with elemental infusion? if i have a chaos broadsword, after 3 hit the fire damage is buffed?

                                  • Anonymous

So...I know that this doesn't work with any spells or projectile weapons, and that it has to be an actual hit (in other words, DoT effects do nothing), but what about weapon arts on melee weapons that throw projectiles or deal damage without actually hitting with the weapon, such as the Crow Quills, Follower Javelin, or Lothric's Holy Sword?

                                    • Anonymous

I just tried using poison and toxic pyromancies with this ring and it didn't buff like I had hoped. I haven't tried it with infused poison weapons but I'm sure I'd have the same results.

"This weapon receives the two Pontiff's Eye buffs (healing and damage) after the first successful hit. Affects offhand as well." Does this mean after the first hit the rings will proc too? (They stack)

This ring adds a hidden combo meter that fills up with successive hits.I tested this ring on the Ghrus in Farron Keep Perimeter with a curved sword, after 3 hits the little icon shows up and I get a tiny damage up. One second after the icon dissapears, I hit another Ghru once and it came back, proving that it is in fact a combo meter.Further hits increase the damage and the buff goes to stage 2 and stage 3. If you don't attack, the buff does not dissapear, instead it ticks down from stage 3 all the way to 0. This ring is very good for bosses or big enemies, where you can keep the combo meter up. Be sure to use a small weapon.

Okay, so, say i swing a sword through a mob of more than one enemy. Does the stack of hits go based on each enemy hit or just per swing ?

Weapon art makes 7 attacks (With R2) and 1 strong attackmakes 3 hits(+0%) 3hits(+15%) 1hit(+30%) and a final, strong thrust attack(+30%)With Lightning blade always a onehit.

With a decent build that puts out decent damage with a fairly quick and/or staggering weapon, this ring rocks. My luck build with Anri's ss destroys pve and if you invade or get invaded the points will stack up quickly if you can get in just once series of successive hits since it is a percentage damage that increases

                                                • Anonymous

May this buff stack with power within and other buffs?Because carthus beacon can't stack with power within,i thought i might ask this.

                                                  • Anonymous

Unlike other paired weapons like gothards twin swords and wardens twin blades, onikiri and ubadachi does to successive L1s each attack, rather than 2 L1s together. You think thats great for buffs and possibly pontiffs left/right eye?

                                                    • This item seems like it could be pretty good, though rather niche. It's basically MADE for spam builds, so high stamina seems like a must. Furthermore, since the buff triggers on multiple consecutive hits, this item has nice potential synergy with bleed or poison weapons, which are very much reliant on the very same attack strategy.

                                                      • Anonymous

any word if this buff stacks with the old wolf curved sword? (and while i'm asking the question, does it stack with pontif's left eye as well?)

                                                        • Hi! Elemein here, a friend and I have researched this ring heavily to bring new information on when the ring starts buffing for the different weapon types, as well as the approximate damage increase.
