Sulyvahn's Beast is an enemy in Dark Souls 3.

Sulyvahn's Beast Enemy Description

  • A ferocious beast that attacks relentlessly.
  • A head similar to that of a crocodile with three pairs of eyes and numerous teeth. Covered in grey fur, from its head to its curved tail. The ribcage has been torn open and shudders when the beast breathes.
  • None of them respawn after death.
  • The two in front of McDonnell have 2721 health in NG.

Sulyvahn's Beast Combat Information

  • Attacks mainly with bites, snapping at the player. Has a running charge that grabs the player and can result in instant death, to avoid it you should roll sideways slightly sooner than you would think. The attack has a wider reach than expected.
  • If the player is behind or beside this beast it will swipe its head to hit the player and to face the player. It can be hard to evade but it has an obvious wind-up. It will generally do two swipes, from one side to the other.
  • Player will generally be charged by the first beast on the bridge, but if one is close enough, it will enter its normal attack patterns instead.
  • Contact with the exposed ribcage on the underside of the beast often creates a knockback effect, interrupting both your blocks and attacks.

Sulyvahn's Beast Drops

Sulyvahn's Beast Locations

  • Irithyll of the Boreal Valley
    • First encountered upon crossing the bridge into Irithyll. If not slain here, it will jump off the bridge and fight you in the water area below after crossing underneath.
    • Two can be found behind an illusory wall in a small room just before the Silver Knight archers. They protect access to the Aldrich Faithful covenant and the Ring of Favor.

Sulyvahn's Beast Notes & Tips

  • They are EXTREMELY susceptible to bleed. Dorhy's Gnawing can deal upwards 800+ damage per cast at 30 FTH.
  • VERY weak to fire: 2-3 Great Chaos Fire Orbs will put them down pretty quickly.
  • It's susceptible to poison. At SL 31 with 22 intelligence a single application of Poison Spores from the Storyteller's Staff will kill a beast in front of McDonnell. Application can be difficult however due to their speed and unpredictability.
  • All of Sulyvahn's Beasts are unique targets. Dedicated combos kill them quickly, but they have equally dangerous attacks of their own, and can punish reckless behaviour.
  • Roll sideways to stay close when dodging, and come up swinging at them to get damage in before they attack again. Don't trade blows, and don't extend your combos.
  • Without a high investment in Endurance (~30) and/or top notch endurance recovery management (don't hold your shield up when not being attacked for faster regeneration), shields can be difficult to use effectively in this fight as some attacks/combos from the beasts deplete large amounts of stamina. Shield-breaking during this fight will lead to almost certain death.
  • Attacking it from their sides proves useful but beware of its head swipe, it can be difficult to evade.
  • When it breathes lightning it is best to hug its chest or sides. Once the beast breathes lightning they won't change their direction to follow your character, making it easy to evade and punish with one or two good hits before it recovers.
  • Its head is a weakness, like most large enemies
  • A single Great Heavy Soul Arrow to the face after it completes it's initial charge and flop will result in the beast rearing back for a Critical Hit. Simply run up, stab it with an implement of your choice and you will do Massive Damage. The beast then falls backwards and begins flailing. Like everything about this creature the flailing deals damage and can kill you. Either continue blasting it to finish it off or wait for it to slow down and get a swing or two in. It will get back up after this if you've failed to finish it. Differences in NG+ apply until testing can happen.
  • Because the McDonnell fight is very difficult, it is advised to use a bow to lure one of the beasts.
  • Alternatively, you can quickly dispatch them by waiting for their initial plunge and hitting them hard on the nose. This will cause them to go into a reposite state for additional damage. Afterwards, they will be vulnerable for a final attack.

Sulyvahn's Beast Strategies

Irithyll: Entrance Bridge Strategies

  • As soon as it spawns for the first time, this Sulyvahn's Beast takes several seconds to roar and announce its presence.  During this moment, it is very easy to run up and unleash your heaviest attack on its head.  With enough damage, it will lean backwards and go into a riposte-able state.  When I used this strategy, I had two-handed a +1 Demon's Greataxe (~400 AR) and hit it with Demonic Flare for an easy riposte opportunity.
  • An easier way is to count 4 decorated, flower pillars on the bridge, as soon as you reach the fourth one the beast will appear. You can then dip in and out of the entrance, the beast will attempt to disappear once you step out the gate, and will not attack even if it sees you. That technique provides an opportunity to get some hits in. Repeat until it's dead.

Irithyll: Bridge Underside Strategies

  • If you don't defeat the first one you encounter on the bridge in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, and you encounter it again in the water below, there is a simple strategy to defeating it by using the environment to your advantage. In the northern corner, just before you reach the stone floor and manor in the distance, there is a rounded area surrounded by the rocks, a cul-de-sac of sorts. In this rounded area is a crack in the rocks on the right side just big enough for your character to fit into. If you stand at the very back, the monster cannot reach you even though he will try to. From here you can whittle his health down with ranged attacks or carefully timed melee attacks. Block his electrical attack and don't get close enough for him to reach you, and eventually, you will defeat him.

Irithyll: Water Reserve Strategies

  • Skull Ring Strategy
  • A solid strategy is to stagger/riposte. Lure one over with bow, then climb up the ladder immediately, when it begins to walk into the wall, press (climb)+(jump) the jump down the ladder, aiming for his head, and this should cause him to fall back and giving us a riposte. Note that the beast can reach up to the ladder to a certain height, also being able to finish it in one combo is the best possible outcome.
  • A viable strategy for sorcerers is to apply Poison using a Storyteller's Staff, Hidden Body, and Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring to get close enough without notice. After using Poison Spores the beast will move toward you to investigate the spell casting placing it in the poison cloud. Moving backwards will ensure it does not notice you. If a single casting fails to apply poison simply repeat.

Sulyvahn's Beast Trivia

  • It has a similar look to the Egyptian demon Ammit, whose name means Soul Eater.
  • Sulyvahn's Beast belongs to a group of crocodile like monsters inspired by Berserk's Beast of Darkness - read here.
  • Drops 12000 Souls.
  • If the beast survives after a riposte, it will cross its hands over its stomach, seemingly in prayer, and will become "friendly" until attacked again.
  • Its underbelly looks similar to that of the Gaping Dragon.
  • Can be staggered and riposted.
  • Is nearly identical to the Watchdog of Old Boss from Bloodborne

For the one in the mcdonnel room you can lure one then stagger and riposte. It will be in a begging animation and not attack until you hit him another time. Then you have time and room for the second one especially if you cant kill the first fast in limited space

literally how do you even fight them? I have four playthroughs under my belt yet I never feel like there's any worthwhile strategy. eventually I just resort to trading and chugging and hoping for the best. at least there's only 3 of them in any given run

        • There was a very helpful advice regarding the water reserve duo Im obliged to repeat - if you don't play as a pyro/mage, grab the biggest weapon you have and lure them to the ladder one at a time, then climb up and jump off the ladder at tge level of statue's hands while locked on the beast below, and use a jump attack. Most of the time it hits the face guaranteeing a crit and victory. Rinse and repeat

For the initial encounter, run across the bridge and pass through the barrier. He will chase you, but he cannot pass through the barrier. Once he reaches the barrier, pelt him with ranged attacks until dead.

Chaos bed vestiges turned the tables on that c**t that spawns behind you on the bridge. Each cast staggered it long enough to hit a second and third. They are not fun to melee.

              • Anonymous

using the heavy greatsword and hitting their face with the overhead for staggers worked wonders for the water reserve ones

Here's the go-to cheese strat for enemies like this. You'll need the following:

                  Lingering Dragoncrest Ring
                  Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring
                  A staff you can weild
                  Pyromancy Flame item
                  Hidden Body (sorcery)
Poison Mist, or Toxic Mist, or Pestilent Mist (the highest one you can cast.)

                  1) Equip the rings, the staff and the pyro hand.
                  2) Cast Invisible Body and immediately sprint over to one of the beasts and cast your poison spell on them, then sprint away and hide before Invisible Body wears off.
                  3) Wait for poison spell to end.
                  4) Repeat pro re nata.

I died more to those two f****rs than Aldrich, Oceiros, Yhorm and Dragonslayer armour combined, and that's using the ladder strat with a +5 dragonslayer spear, I either need to git even guder or f****ng give up cuz it's driving me nuts

They're not too hard if you just fight defensively - wait for them to attack, keep rolling and be patient. If you fight them aggressively, there's a good chance you'll get smoked.

I've found a great easy method of defeating them though I don't know if it will work if other builds (mine mercenaries twinswords).
With double handling the swords, you wait for beast to charge in a point just outside his reach then you proceed with 2 strong attacks and he's exposed for finisher move. If he's not dead by then he'll be lying on its back (beware of tail) being easy prey.

Lol I’m a pure strength build so I decided to buy some wood bolts to lure one of them in. Turns out, they just eat wood bolts like a bowl of cheerios before Saturday morning cartoons! Who knew they were immune to “wood bolts” lol. I’m having fun

The two at the Water Reserve are easily killed with arrows but requires a lot of patience. Did it on a 40 dex build with Black Bow Of Pharis +6, fire arrows. No armor, Hawk Ring (didn't kill the giant, he just died of natural causes!), Floyd' Ring, Carthus Mirkling. Would work with a different setup I'm sure but might take longer. Went down the ladder and didn't even step away from it, sniped 1 head shot on the far right beast. As soon as I saw the arrow hit I ran up the ladder. If you run out of the building to the right of the ladder with enough distance the beast resets aggro and goes back to initial position. If you just run up the ladder and wait up there in the building they don't reset aggro. 1 headshot did between 130-157 damage on the far right one, the one behind the left corner is closer and I did 230 damage/headshot. Same start for both, 1 shot, run and keep running. I ran all the way across the plaza where the dead/sleeping giants are. I don't know how their aggro range works but it must be based on sight and also range even vertically. Each shot+running and going back down takes roughly 2 minutes so it takes quite a long time but it works 100% with no danger. Just like the rest of the game, never get greedy and try two shots, you'll probably miss. Because the beast does a little spastic reaction upon hit you have time to get up the ladder without the beast actually aggroing enough to run under the ladder. When descending the ladder make sure to slow down once you enter the lower chamber and look to your right to make sure the beasts are reset. For the one on the left hug the wall, zoom in with your bow and move forward while tilting the crosshairs left until you see the beast's head.
I have a hard time gitting gud but I love the game so I got smart. Praise the Sun! [T]/

thanks fromsoft for this terrible enemy! and thanks again for making us fight two of them in a tiny room! good job

Holy ****ing ****. The 2 just before Anor Londo are THE WORST fight in the entire game. Jesus christ, very few things in my 1300+ hours of Souls have pissed me off as much as them. The Fishing Hamlet is nothing. You can just use a Shaman Bone Blade there and it's a cakewalk. Not here. The first Beast on the bridge coming into Irithyll isn't too bad, took it down 1st try without too much trouble. But the one's down the ladder??? It's like their hitboxes are extended out 50 miles. You cannot be anywhere NEAR them without getting hit constantly. They do WAY more damage than the first one, have WAYY more health and barley seem to take any damage, even using their weaknesses. And unless you want to agro both, which is an impossible fight, you have to fight 1 in a tiny area, which means not being able to be far enough away from them to avoid their massive hitboxes. Plus, the run back to them + the ladder is annoying. IMO, there are very few enemies/encounters in the series that truly are badly designed. People whine about every single enemy besides basic hollows as being cheap or unfair. This is 1 case where I believe the cheap, unfair and badly designed label actually applies. This is ridiculous.

It's like they deliberately tried to make an enemy as cancerous as possible: AOE, randomly stunning you just by being near them, atrocious camera barely keeping up with their spastic movement/size, ridiculous damage, grab attack, seemingly random collision damage. It's saying something when they're harder than Pontiff himself, who is no joke either.

One of my favourite boss enemies. Actaully chalenging, damn fast and dangerous, but the satisfaction once you figure out how to deal with them - noice.

                                    • Anonymous

These guys aren't unfair, it's just that too many people treat them like they're a Bloodborne boss. Don't attack them from the side/back because that just causes them to do their jumping sweep attack. Instead, go a few meters in front of them, bait their charge attack, dodge towards them, get some hits in, rinse and repeat.

Lured one of them with a bow under the stair, with a plunge attack at max height I could survive (with cat ring equiped) + a few attack I stagger the beast and frontstab, it should be almost dead by then do the same for the other one

I killed the one at Irithill first try, how? I sued my twin dragon greatshield.
But i wanted the ring of favor it didn't give me.

I hate these enemies with a burning passion. They ruin what would otherwise be an amazing game. I hate how fromskft shoots rhemselves in the foot whenever they try to make a flawless game.

Now perseverance is the key here, it wont be a problem for str builds but the others should try mace or caestus at least.

let me put this enemy that does 1 million damage with **** hitboxes haha look guys dark souls is a hard game

Don't need a bow to lure in McDonnell. Usually just approaching the left beast slowly until it aggros on you is enough to lure it to the ladders. The other beast won't bother you until you go near/past the item near the pillars.

                                                  • Anonymous

The McDonnell-fight is very easy: Cast hidden body and spook, then go near one beast and shoot three chaos bed vestiges on it - it will not attack because of the spell hidden body. Do the same with the other one.

                                                    Easy peasy

At first i believe this mf had broken hitboxes, but I think the hit box of the bite comprends his ribs too, its a nightmare to dodge with low vit.

Took me more attemts than Deacons of the Deep, Abyss Watchers and High Lord Wolnir all together.

I found when facing the one on the bridge run straight to the end where the barrier is, it can’t breach the wall. When it lowers its head land as many hits as possible. Run back to the other end and begin making your way to the barrier, it’ll appear with the damage you dealt to it. Wash rinse repeat

This dude is definitely 100% based off the wolf from Berserk, looks exactly like it and Artorias is already known to be based off of the manga as well.

                                                                  • Anonymous

No actual investment into its bleed effect (still at 7 luck) but I was bleeding the beasts easily. I should probably invest levels into luck, maybe even switch the infusion on my flamberge to a hollow gem since I aint using any weapon buffs.

What, you don't have a greatsword? Well... firebombs will do.

                                                                      • Anonymous

For the life of me I can't understand why did they make enemies weak, resistant or immune to certain elements/status effects without giving us any clues in the game which they are to. Or maybe idk do we get to have like a bestiary later on? Some fights become a joke if you by chance having the right weapon at right time.

                                                                        • Anonymous

This time i was using a more balanced, quality build and holy f..... wolf knight greatsword with some upgrades destroy them due to the bonus vs abyssal.
One hit in the head instantly stuned them, opening a riposte/visceral that instantly killed them. It seemed like a bad joke after i died so many times in my 1st playthrought against the 2 in Archdeacon McDonnell room ....

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

Entire body is a hitbox, lightning fast, attacks wipe off half of your health, relentless combos, massive healthbars plus you have to kill 2 of them to access a covenant. Seriously, **** THESE THINGS
