Sunlight Straight Sword is a Unique Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

Straight sword imbued with the strength of lightning.

This featureless long sword contains the very power of the sun. Perhaps is a relic of one-sided adoration.

Skill: Oath of Sunlight
Raise the sword aloft when praising the sun to boost attack and damage absorption for self and allies in vicinity. The warriors of sunlight are co-operators from an ancient age.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Infused, but can be Buffed
  • Reinforced with Twinkling Titanite.
  • All weapons have motion values assigned to each attack, which are modifiers to AR that are associated with the attack being used.
    • The Sunlight Straight Sword has a motion value of 200 on backstab, 250 on riposte, and 60+225 on Hornet Ring riposte. The motion value of a backstab with a straight sword does not change with Hornet Ring.
  • The Sunlight Straight Sword has a range of 33.8241xl on the 1h R1 and 33.2403xl on the 2h R1.
  • The Sunlight Straight Sword has thrusting R2 attacks when used 1h.
  • The weapon is a natural choice for faith builds due to its natural scaling, and since its Weapon Art works similarly to Sacred Oath it also makes for a good buff weapon.

Softcaps & Scaling:

  • 12/12/16 = 251 AR = Base Stats
  • 40/12/16 = 293 AR = Str Softcap
  • 12/40/16 = 293 AR = Dex Softcap
  • 12/12/40 = 339 AR = Fth Softcap
  • 40/40/40 = 422 AR = Combined Softcaps

It's a crime you can't get this weapon much earlier (without dancer cheese and suicide runs in Lothric Castle). Considering how Faith builds are neutered in the early game, Sunlight Straight Sword + Blessed Weapon would had make Faith runs more bearable at the beginning areas and actually feel your stat investment is getting you somewhere.

This thing’s faith scaling is insane, highest physical damage weapon for any build involving faith, and if you buff it, oh boy

        • Anonymous

If you think it’s good, it was truly broken when it got its first true patch. It b/b/a or something goof and just killed people with a buff.

          • Anonymous

"Straight sword imbued with the strength of lightning" yet it does not have any inherent lightning damage.

            • Anonymous

Crazy how you can have sacred oath, deep protection and lightening blade all at once on this blade. Made my first cleric playthrough fairly easy although I didn't beat all optional bosses.

                Dark Souls Most Op Builds

Ds1: Black Knight Halberd into Obsidian Greatsword FAITH CASTER BUFF MACHINE (Pure Dex Intel Pyro Sorc works too)

DS2 It's all about being a strength chad! No one did strength (AND HEXES) better than good ol Ds2. Demon Great Hammer or/into Crypt Blacksword or Ring that let's your fists frag. Strike Damage is OP its basically EZ mode. Denial is HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Str some faith adp you're set! Or just pure str vig & adp!!! Miracle builds suck tho as you know. Also I loved Ds2!!! Idk why you guys have so much hate for it???

Bloodborne: If you don't play 99 arcane fire Saw Spear & Flamethrower you're at a disadvantage it's almost like the game was made for it?! Stupid broken I love it!

                Demon Souls: Creseant Falcion Mage!

Ds3 this bad boy! There's no other weapon that feels like it hits harder more satisfying and feels fun to use like this monster. IF SOLAIRE WAS A DEX USER! THIS IS HIS LEGACY & GLORY! R1 SPAM 2 WIN. INSANE FAITH SCALING & MOVESET, EASY TO UPGRADE IMO AND CAN BE AQUIRED EARLY IF YOU GIT GUD... or use gnaw lol.. MOST IMPORTANTLY THE WEAPON ART IS AMAZING AND YOU CAN BUFF IT! Only weapon I've ever gravitated towards in this game. Only thing that pumps NUMBERS. Not to mention all the utility and damage with a miracle caster! (RTSR & ROSE TOO) Twinblades feel so boring. Somehow this weapon hits just right. PRAISE THE SUN! (this is my least fave Ds imo but this weapon makes it truly fun!) Also you can put dark lightning and magic (or is DMB physical???) Either way this baby is just so great. Have faith lads! GLHF!!!

what is the damage of this sword with 99/99/99 sacred oath, the weapon art and lightining blade of the yorshika's bell ?

                  • Anonymous

great weapon to replace lightning/blessed LKSS on a faith build, especially on a 20/20/60 faith build, it out damage the blessed LKSS unbuffed! Just use lightning blade or dark moonlight with this and deal crazy damage

                    • This is a contender for the best Straight Sword in the game.
Gotthard's has range, Lothric Knight Straight Sword has a nice balance of range and damage, Irithyll Straight Sword is good for ganking and getting parried. But this? This absolute unit of a sword has damage. Pure unadulterated damage. 30 Strength, 30 Dexterity, 60 Faith and Darkmoon Blade allows this thing to potentially three shot players at meta level. That's only THREE hits with a straight sword to kill someone. I'd take that over a little bit of range any day, it's still a straight sword so it has too much range anyway.

                      • Anonymous

this weapon does crazy amounts of damage on a faith build. at 40 or if your crazy even 60 faith this does way more damage then any blessed straight sword in the game and this can still be buffed with something like blessed weapon, darkmoon blade, or lightning blade, and on top of all that since you have lots of faith so you can stack some extra buffs like this weapons WA or some stuff like sacred oath if you leveled attunment a little or even just a lothric war banner.
PVE I'd say this is one of the definitive faith weapons as it's damage output is ridiculous for a straight sword.
if your willing to shill out 60 faith and add lightning weapon to this with yorshka's chime you'd get a AR of 590 and if you want blessed weapon it'd be doing around 382 pure physical AR
that's only the high end though even at 40 faith this still outclasses every blessed gem straight sword so you'll always be doing more damage and be able to buff your weapon to even higher numbers.
Again since it does outclass every other blessed straight sword it does still do well in PVP but weapon buffs aren't always as reliable in PVP due to duel charms so it's still useful to have a blessed weapon for it's passive health regen. But quickly using this weapons WA when engaging in PVP is a nice AR boost on top of it's top tier damage so even without buffs I'd say this weapon does just fine.

Using this for a Silver Knight build, absolutely amazing with Sacred Oath buff + Lightning Blade...just, dear god the damage.

should we be worried that this thig with its weapon art and darkmoon blade allow us to get to at leas 720 AR per swing WITHOUT magic clutch ring? being a straight swrod and all...

                            • Anonymous

For anyone wondering, this weapon outclasses the Harald Curved Greatsword with a quality build and darkmoon blade. Even if it doesn't 3 bit true combo, it can probably deal more than 1200 dmg in 2 swings in PvP and is harder to dodge. If you're fully buffed with magic clutch ring, crown of dusk, sacred oath and power within, you will two hit most phantoms. Yes, this is a STRAIGHT sword not a UG Sword. I'll be running this on my high SL faith tank.

But the real question is does the r2 buff stack with Rose of Ariandel. slight testing seems to prove no, no it doesn't. (But you do get both aura's so still misleading)

Primary use IMHO is PvE on pyro or faith build.. have chaos and dark weps on my pyro but have a faith scaling non split physical dmg WEP with thrust was a God send. Good against certain mobs/bosses... First thing I used twink tit on... JS

Idk if this weapon got buffed since this post but it currently has D scaling in both str and dex un upgraded

B scaling my ass this thing has more AR then a blessed lothric knight straight sword with an S scaling in faith. AND it can be buffed.

                                      • Anonymous

60 FTH with Yorshka's chime, apply WA and SLB or DMB. Equip Lightning Arrow, Lightning Stake and Sunlight Spear, and the Canvas Talisman for when you must poise-cast. If you want even more miracle damage, equip a Lightning infused War Banner in the right hand and use its WA. Profit.

                                        • Anonymous

This thing with +5 at 60 faith, 22 dex and 35 str, with yorskas chime+10, lightening clutch ring, you can pump the AR to 750. If you add the WA buff its almost 800. With dark magic its slighty weaker but better against lightening resistant enemies. Darkmoon blade is the same damage but with magic just remember the magic clutch ring. Insane faith weapon.

                                          • Anonymous

This weapon is not for PvE roaming. This is more for bosses and PvP so for critical battles. Unbuffed it sucks but buffed eith lightning this thing hits hard. But this means it consumes FP and requires the lingering dragon crest ring to be truely effective. I did some testing vs lothric castle bonfire knights: Lightning shortsword R1: 370 dmg. Unbuffed sunlight blade: 200 dmg. Lightning buff sunlight blade: 470 dmg. My stats are 12 str 12 dex 60 fth. I'm using a lightning clutch ring.

If you have Tears of Denial up, it will be overwritten when you use Oath of Sunlight. However, if an ally uses Oath of Sunlight, you will retain Tears and get the buff simultaneously. It pays to have jolly cooperation.

                                                • Anonymous

this thing has dumb faith scaling so I made a 40 faith build on a character and made blessed lothric knight straight sword for S scaling in faith however when I made my faith 60 the sunlight straight swords AR became monsterously high which makes me think this things soft cap is like 60 and not 40 cause it scales much much higher then a weapon with S scaling in faith at higher levels despite not having an S scaling

                                                  • Anonymous

Overrated. Gaining physical damage while scaling from faith should make it the ideal choise for a faith build, right? Wrong. Fully upgraded this blade has an AR of 386 on a build with 40 dex, 17 strength and 40 faith. A fully upgraded, sharp infused lothric knight sword has 390 on a build with 13 strength and 38 dex. in terms of point investment this blade needs heavy investment in three stats just to be on par with other straight swords. On a buff build you'd be better off going with a heavy/sharp infused weapon of a different kind.

                                                    • Anonymous

A thing to note, if nobody talked about this, it's that the sacred oath for some reason removes Tears of Denial (ToD) but if u use the sacred oath first and then ToD nothing strange happens, Pretty sure its a bug

                                                      • Anonymous

@the guy below me: Oh sweetie, everyone's known about the SSS's insane AR stacking forever now. You're right, it's a great weapon. Perfect for faith builds.

                                                        • Anonymous

Best faith weapon, hands down. Straight swords are already pretty flexible weapons, so one that puts your faith investment into PHYSICAL attack, while it won't compete with the A and S scalings some weapons get with heavy or sharp infusions, is pretty useful. However, the Weapon art buff boosts ALL damage by 10% AND stacks with weapon buffs. So with 60 faith you should be getting about 365 AR with the straight sword alone (minimum dex and strength), and a Dark Moon Blade buff cast with Yorshka's Chime will add about 235 magic damage for a combined total AR of 600 AR. Toss on the weapon art buff of 10%, and you now have a 660 AR straight sword for 45 seconds. Enough time to absolutely annihilate a boss. Or put an enemy down in 3 hits in pvp.

Should mention that if the physical requirements are not met for the weapon, the weapon art will not take place.

                                                              • Anonymous

"Straight sword imbued with the strength of lightning" My god that's misleading, I thought it would do lightning damage. Not even the weapon art buff adds lightning damage.

                                                                • Anonymous

I made a semi-pure faith build. I use this, at +10 with oath/deep protection/lightning blade I'm getting 639AR one handed. Fth 50 Str 14 Dex 13. No buff is 351. Only Lightning Blade buffs to 546AR. So to save fp I stick to just LB buff. Currently at SL93, plan on 115-130sl.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Even without buffing this weapon, the physical scaling with Faith makes it an understated but reliable armament for a pure Faith build. A scant four point investment in physical stats with a Cleric start, and reasonably light. Its weapon skill saves you two attunement slots. And to top it all off, it is buffable. Given that Miracle casters get Darkmoon Blade, Dark Blade and Lightning Blade to choose from, you’ll not find an opponent you can’t target with an effective element on top of decent physical damage. This and the Saint’s Talisman are all a pure Faith build truly needs in terms of weaponry.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

At a 40/40/60 build, buff it with a lightning blade and it will out damage a Lightning Lothric Knight Sword or a Refined Lothric Knight Sword+lightning blade buff. Thus it remains the best stright sword for faith warrior build.

                                                                          • Anonymous

It's good when you use it's wa and sunlight blade, ideal for bosses and pvp, but for getting around in pve i'm not going to constantly be doing that for the regular mobs or i'd be out of mana quick. It's a very lame sword when not buffed, so I use other things when not pvp or bosses.

I got this on my first playthrough. Started a new class and got a symbol of avarice from this mimic not sunlight :( got the same from the other mimic. The one up the stairs when all them hollows throw bombs down at you.

                                                                              • Anonymous

I guess after all the centuries it has been through, it became less effective. That would explain its nerf compared to DS1.

                                                                                • Anonymous

This weapon, Lothrics Straightsword, and the Saints Bident do pure physical based mainly on faith. However, only Sunlight and Saints can be buffed.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This weapon is surprisingly good for a Pyromancer as a Carthus Flame Arc buff. Right now my Pyromancer has 16/20/38/38 (will go to 40/40) and at default (no buffs CFA or OoS) it has an AR of 350 one-handed, with Carthus Flame Arc it goes up to about 538 AR with a fully upgraded Pryomancy Flame. For comparison a Sharp infused Longsword (with 16/20 Sharp is better than Raw) hits 322 AR (Raw only hits 309 AR) and a Raw Falchion hits 338 AR.
The closest Strait Sword in terms of AR that can be buffed is the Broadsword and that only hits 337 AR when Sharp infused (Raw hits 322 AR), but at 16/20/40/40 the Sunlight Strait Sword will hit 355 AR one-handed. I'd recommend it to any Pyromancers as at 14/16/40/40 (min stats for Demon's Scar and to be able to one-hand the Onyx Blade) you still get an AR of 346, which for a buffable weapon with very little STR/DEX investment is pretty darn good if I'm being honest

                                                                                    • Anonymous

fun fact this sword has weird scaling even though it has B in faith scaling it has no REAL hard cap (i think) so it kind of just keeps scaling to high levels with faith at 99 faith for instance a sunlight strait sword does 394 AR at 99 faith alone while a blessed lothric knight strait sword at 99 faith has 389 AR. making the sunlight strait sword one of the best weapons for a pure faith build.
(trust me i use it, its pretty good)
This is more obvious at lower levels like 60 Faith were the sunlight strait sword will do 370 AR and blessed lothric will do 356.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

just for info: nobody is using it except for the buff. Many Katanas, TwinGS and Splitleafs, Fume, Exile, GS of all sorts, Dragonslayer Axe ofc...and that's it for 90% of the players (caster aside). Yesterday I saw someone running into a boss fight even with Arstors spear! Casters not able to do something besides spamming R1... Dark Souls seems to encourage people to understand the game on first glance but in reality all you need is a sunbro doing the dirty work and not to forget to point the finger down at the end.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Is the effect of oath of sunlight affected by your faith level? or does the buff do the same buff strength with any level of faith? I just have enough faith to use the weapon art, and i'm not sure if it even makes a difference.

                                                                                          • Anonymous
