Sir Vilhelm is an NPC in Dark Souls 3. He is part of the Ashes of Ariandel DLC.

Sir Vilhelm Information

Sir Vilhelm Location

  • You can find Sir Vilhelm at Painted World of Ariandel, cathedral before meeting Sister Friede for the first time. He will then be found by the graveyard and will be hostile.
  • If you attack him the first time you meet him, he will disappear until his scripted second encounter when he is hostile.

Sir Vilhelm Drops

  • Souls: NG (9000), NG+ (18000), NG++ (19800), NG+3 (20250), NG+7 (22950)
  • Weapons: Onyx Blade
  • Armor: None. His armor, Vilhelm's Set can be acquired later in the level on the bottom floor of bug room.
  • Key: Contraption Key

Sir Vilhelm Combat Information

  • Weak to Poison, Bleed Damage.
  • Strong against Frost.
  • Immune to ?? damage.
  • Phantoms cannot help you in the battle against him. He appears as a ghost to them. The extent of their help is healing the host during the tough battle. (This was changed in Patch 1.09. Phantoms can now engage him as well.)
  • Does not use Estus, but will heal himself with a miracle and cast Vow of Silence if you brandish any type of casting device (talisman, pyro glove). This combination can be used to player's advantage.
  • He will heal himself as many times as he needs.
  • The Onyx Blade he wields has incredible reach and a powerful dark flame bluff. He wields the Dark Hand in his off hand. He is one of the more formidable NPC battles in the game and is a challenge to lower level players unable of dealing enough damage, as well as protection.
  • If one chooses the easy way to kill him, one can lead him to outside graveyard and keep dodging him near the edge of the cliff. Eventually he will backstep or dodge to his death by gravity. You can also force him down using the force miracle (video) but be wary of hiding your talisman until the very last moment because otherwise, Sir Vilhelm will resort to casting "vow of silence, effectively canceling this strategy. switching to the talisman/chime needed to cast force at the last minute will give you enough time though.
  • Sir Vilhelm will only chase you up to a few feet beyond the steps outside the building (in the graveyard) before he backs away. This can be easily exploited with ranged attacks, backstabs, or melee attacks, but one should be wary of his healing ability.
  • Vilhelm can be tricked into leaving his safe area however, during the period he's strolling towards you, if you maintain the distance away from him and keep backing up he will follow you indefinitely, if you wait until he's outside of his usual combat area before you aggro him, he will fight you on the spot. Couple things to keep in mind however is that you will have to alter your strategy, since he is no longer bound by his original fighting area, he will not back away and will follow you aggressively. Secondly, he will not climb ladders, or jump over gaps, but if you attempt to cheese him from the chappel roof to the side of the cathedral he will hug the wall, making it impossible to hit him with arrows or magic/miracles. Lastly, his collision detection seems to be buggy, especially concerning the chappel, if you wait on the center of the roof after dragging him out of his area he will often run at the closed door until he glitches into the chappel (Be mindful of trying to cheese him through a wall, his sword still outranges spears, and if you aggro the knight inside, sometimes Vilhelm will push the knight out of the chappel, causing it to attack you.)

Sir Vilhelm Dialogue

His dialogue in your first encounter is a lot more flourish if you have taken on Yuria's Lord of Hollows quest, have access to the "Lord of by sacrificing Anri and speaking to Yuria afterwards.

NOTE: Lines that are in parentheses are what Vilhelm says when the player has finished the Lord of Hollows questline.

First encounter full dialogue at the Cathedral (including the additional Lord of Hollows dialogue):

Well, (well)...
(You're Lady Yuria's Lord of Hollows.)
No bell tolls, and yet, you've slipped into the painting?
Ah no matter.
If you've lost your way, the words of Lady Friede will guide you.
Now, go on inside. Show respect, and listen carefully.

What's keeping you? Go on, right inside.
Show respect, and let Lady Friede speak to you."

If you attack him after first meeting him:

Why you miserable, mad Hollow.
You're nothing, without a bell to guide your way.

(Why you miserable, mad Hollow.
What is Lady Yuria thinking...)"

If the player talks to Vilhelm again after talking to Sister Friede:

Lady Friede has spoken, has she not?
Then tarry no longer and begone.
(Carry on, for Lady Yuria, and for Londor.)

There is one thing you should know.
Inside the cold painting, curiosity could be your cross...
Stray from the withering flame, and the snow will swallow you whole."

Second encounter in the building at the end of the Corvian Settlement (when he is hostile):

I've seen your kind, time and time again.
Every fleeing man must be caught. Every secret must be unearthed.
Such is the conceit of the self-proclaimed seeker of truth.
But in the end, you lack the stomach.
For the agony you'll bring upon yourself..."

When he kills you:

I trust you've learned your lesson...
Inside the cold painting, curiosity could be your cross..."

When you kill him:

Forgive me, my Lady...
I swore an oath, but I have failed you...
... Lady Elfriede..."

Sir Vilhelm Trivia

I noticed that sometimes he would perform the notorious L1 wiggle like he was a human player. I don't know if it's intentional or not to have a slim chance of it happening but it was kinda funny when I witnessed it.

Dude has like five minutes of screentime and manages to be the coolest guy in the whole trilogy. Respect. Not even mad that the fight against him is so tough. After all, he's seen my kind, time and time again

        • Tried to shield bash him off the cliff but he got back up each time, continued this until he died from the shield bash damage (22 damage, according to the wiki 2080 ÷ 22 = 94.5 bashes, whoa that's a lot)

Love that "Chainsmoker who smokes at least 2 full packets of cigarettes every day" Sound-ahh voice that he has.

Here's how you can beat him early, because i was doing a pyro build and wanted the pyro parting flame super early.
              Relevant stats were 15att, 18fai, 18int, 2 +1estus, but a third could help.

In the off hand, equip dark hand, in main use pyro flame with poison mist. Swap to an empty hand to delay vow, then once close use poison mist. A good opening for everything is to wait for him to switch to his talisman before casting. Now while his health ticks down, play footsies until he cast vow or heal. The moment he does either, run up and lifesteal with dark hand. Eventually he'll run out of mana and keel over from no more healing.

Trying to kill him at SL 30 takes a little piece of my soul every single time I'm going mad trying to down him ************

It's been years, but i still remember this piece of s**t and how much he pissed me off. Only the Bloody Crow of Cainhurst in Bloodborne kicked my ass more than this guy.

                  Great voice acting though.

I don't know why but he come to me and I climb to the roof of chapel and wait for him under he's in front of the cathedral's door and then I go away from him and went to the bridge and when I came back he's inside of the cathedral now together with corvian knights and I start throw some dung pie and wait for them to die

Pretty sure he called me the Lord of Hollows even though I hadn't done Yuria's quest yet, was it a glitch because I went there too early?

                      • Anonymous

This is so easy! Walk in the cathedral door an as soon as he starts talking an walking run over the the ladder an climb on the roof with the way of the white miracle building, then when he starts chest bumping the building , run over to the wall then over the bridge with the 2 archways, after he gets there jump down to the roof with the tall tower an walk to the back he’ll follow an a few seconds later he’ll bounce his dumb ass off the ledge an into the snowy abyss an ull get the key an the blade without ever even equipping an weapon let alone having to use it !

There is a unique line when you first greet him after completing Yuria's questline, it seems to trigger after the wedding thing.

This is one of the most insanely OP NPC's I've ever seen. He has massive damage, multiple spells, hyper armor during some attacks, Black Flame, very few weaknesses, near limitless stamina that lets him roll for hours at a time, Dark hand, which is basically a 1 shot move from even super high Vigor AND gets to heal without any limit with a spell that can't be interrupted......you think you made him strong enough? Jesus. Also, it says he's weak to bleed, but it sure as hell doesn't seem like it.

this was so easy, it might have been a bug. SL1 i used a base longbow, lured him to the end of his leash, shot him with 4 poison arrows. He wasn’t losing health, but walked back inside, and i suddenly got the sword and key. 4 poison arrows. I think he was the one who lacked the stomach.

If you want a "normal combat" with him, without him healing himself endlessly, then just keep a catalyst equipped in your left hand. That way you still get a fair fight, but he never casts heal on himself.

                                  Fun fact:

Both this NPC and the Havel Knight at Archdragon Peak can toy with a max-level player character on NG+ and up.

Doing a low level pass through him I found that Storyteller's Staff can work on him. Poison him with the weapon art and keep the staff out so he'll keep using VoS which doesn't effect the staff's weapon art but still cuts off his heals. Try to stay close and keep him busy and wait for the poison to do it's work.

I ****ing knew I heard his voice in Witcher 3, I am pretty sure he also voices some lower level grunts in that game since a lot of them have that raspy voice of his.

all I know about this guy is he seems to like jumping of a cliff to his death

probly because the girl he simps for never gave a s h i t about him

Little tip super easy mode draw him out of the chapel then run to the left and all the way back where you find the coins and hide there and he just dies with none of that finicky spell nonsense

Imagine protecting someone with your life only for them to have your corpse thrown in a pit as food for flies after you’re killed. Truly, the biggest simp and the saddest outcome of any NPC.

dude the edgy cool cold hearted theme your going for isent working you were already pretty badass anyway so you can chill with the edge

                                              • My favorite npc in the game. His voice is menacing but has a snarky tone to it, and he’s a pretty good fight and uses his onyx blades length pretty effectively. He also counters every build, either by outhealing everything or using vow of silence. If only he didn’t have a foot fetish.

                                                • Anonymous

At leat he recnognized me as the Lord of Hollows. But i don´t blame him, he just followed his oath and the orders he got

                                                  • Anonymous

For low level-10VIT builds: he heals a lot less when outdoors, outside his aggro range. I can't get the cheese where you make him fall to his death tho...

A 2H straight sword is fast enough to stagger him anytime while he's 1H

                                                    • Anonymous

You guys find this guy difficult to kill? Pfff. I have never took a single hit by him upto my ng+4. Casuals.

                                                      • Anonymous

I find it a little unfair that I literally cannot kill him. I can dodge him, parry him, but he is literally outhealing 100% of any damage I do to him, even if I backstab him when he heals.
I am hitting for 97 on a one handed R1 with a Greatsword and 219 on a backstab.
He can literally kill me in 3R1s, and one shot me with one hit guard break to riposte, and I can't kill him at all.

                                                          ****ing die miazaki.
dark souls 3 really is the worst of the series because of garbage like this.
what happen to memerable, FUN bosses like Orinstien and Smough? instead we get retarded bullshit like this. unlimited heals, massive phantom reach, bs damage and pathetically easy to read movements
i ****ing hate with this **** has done with the series, after the 'meh' of 2 and the "welp, its the last, so **** YOU fan" of 3, go back to your garbage mech games miazaki. and die a poor, unpopular ******* that ruined a great game series and then abandoned it

I havent go trough the bridge but from the corvian village and sir vilhelm attacked me when I entered the church, I teleported my self back and when Ive traversed the bridge and entered the bonfire where frida is, and no sir vilhelm around.

                                                            • Anonymous

I was invading and I noticed he didnt spawn even though I was fighting the host right in front of the lever that lowers the ramp. I ended up killing the host but never could figure out why Sir Vilhelm didn't spawn to help me against the host. I've invaded there countless times and when it comes to it, I'll retreat to the Sir Vilhelm room and wait for him to spawn once the host gets near. But this last time he never did.

                                                              • Anonymous

Dude totally climbed the ladder to the roof of the building with the corvians knights. Only had it happen once, but it's not impossible. Scared the shards outta me.

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

I killed him with the Drang Twinspears (lightning infused), using its skill once and again. I also had the black knight shield. He recovered the health two times, but then he didn't do it anymore. And he takes the damage of the skill without counterattack, so it made it quite easy.

                                                                          • Anonymous

If anybody still has trouble with him, pull out a catalist or staff or flame or whatever, then as he casts vow of silence, backstab him. Then when he gets up hit a full charged heavy attack with your weapon of choice, and his health should be basically nothing. However if he rolls away and tries to heal, hit another easy backstab

                                                                            • Anonymous

To anyone who's main damage output is ranged magic oriented. Your best strategy is to swap your catalyst to anything else, Qui kly swap to your talisman, than swap back. He never uses vow of silence that way. You can cheese him from the graveyard if you aggro him

                                                                              • Anonymous

I was invading a world and chilling in a cosplay of him by where he spawns (I think it's funny) and as I was dying to the gank, I could SWEAR that he used what looked like the Havel Shield weapon art. Just as I was dying, he just activated rocc. Anybody else seen this, or am I going insane?

I'm not entirely clear on whether or not we really unearthed a secret and tried to save the people of the painting, or just killed a bunch of random people because we were after another ember

Gotta chase down every NPC that flees, scrounge every item you can and look into every corner for every secret, even at the cost of others (and your own life, many times).

I was trying to kill him for his set on a very low level, underprepared character and he kept one-shotting me, so I resorted to underhanded tactics and found that hiding on top of the building when he's chasing you and moving around to the ledge gives you a fairly clear angle to hit him with dung pies. He won't chase you unless you get close enough to hit him once or twice, otherwise he keeps backing up into the building he came out of before running out again and then backing up once he gets past the steps and you don't want to try it there, as he WILL chase you if you hit him.
