Wolnir's holy Sword is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

A holy sword eroded by the Abyss. When Wolnir fell to the Abyss, he was gripped by a fear of true darkness, and pleaded to the gods for the first time.

This holy sword, together with three armlets stripped from the corpses of clerics, gave him some semblance of comfort.

Skill: Wrath of the Gods
Thrust weapon into earth to emit powerful shockwave. The wrath of those swallowed by the Abyss is a thing to be wary of indeed.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Buffed or Infused.
  • Reinforces with Titanite Scale.
  • Has the same moveset as the Bastard Sword, with the exception of the Weapon Art.
  • The initial thrust of the Weapon Art has a hitbox. But it does not true-combo into the Blast of the WA.
  • Received Faith scaling and altered Strength and Dexterity scaling in the 1.09 regulation patch.
  • Wolnir's Holy Sword has a range of 35.3243xl on the 1h R1 and 37.7386xl on the 2h R1.

Softcaps & Scaling:

  • 2-Handed stats
    • St/Dx/Fa = AR = Comment
    • 13/13/13 = 345 = Base Stats & Dex Softcap
    • 13/40/13 = 368
    • 13/99/13 = 377 = Dex Hardcap
    • 27/13/13 = 413 = Str Softcap
    • 40/13/13 = 427
    • 13/13/40 = 429 = Faith Softcap
    • 13/13/60 = 443
    • 66/13/13 = 448 = Str Hardcap
    • 13/13/99 = 464 = Faith Hardcap
    • 26/13/40 = 496 = Combined Softcap
    • 40/13/40 = 511
    • 66/13/40 = 532
    • 66/13/60 = 546
    • 66/99/99 = 600 = Combined Hardcap
  • After softcaps it gets less than 2 AR per level
  • 2-handed Strength Faith weapon
    • Scales well with both Str and Faith
    • Scales terribly with Dex

Is it good for a faith build? No. Is it good for a strength build? Depends. And to top off the absolute worst sword I've ever seen it has sh*t scaling.

      • Anonymous

you're looking for a faith greatsword. miyazaki hands you this, tells you to cry, and you decide to use a lightning claymore instead, because of course that's better

        • Anonymous

Now this feels like a decent weapon for pvp if you learn how to time the WA.
Just note that the WA has weak HA so to be able to trade you'll need a somewhat decent poise, so the wolf ring can help with that.
Just remember that the timing is key on this gs.

the wa actually has decent hyperarmor if you're wearing decent armor.

At meta levels like 60-125 this sword can hit with decent damage and retain the length and scaling of a claymore.

no thrusts but I've found that doesn't matter since a sweep or vertical slash seems to work like a thrust anyway.

try to get a crit while using it, and remember to use the wa even if it seems weak.

            • Anonymous

Works better at low levels since this weapon has low scaling but high base damage. Treat it like a raw weapon

              • Anonymous

It's explosion damage is garbage. Slightly more than a single R1 from same weapon, but with very long casting time. Maybe okay if you are getting overwhelmed, but otherwise worthless. In PvP it's asking to get backstabbed.

                • Anonymous

In PvE, it's slightly better than a normal WotG since it has hyper armor, costs less, needs less than half the FTH, is an actual weapon and if you're point blank at the enemy, it will take half of the AoE's damage around half a second before it releases (a tiny light orb generates where the sword is impaled, before the big boom happens). At 40/40/28 it deals around 920 damage to the cemetery ravenous lizard in NG+

Fun fact, the weapon art on this sword couples wonderfully with an offhand Executioner's Greatsword against Deacons of the Deep. Every deacon you blast with the weapon art will refund a bit of the FP cost, and you only need half the FP the skill requires to actually get weapon art to activate. Endless Wrath of the Gods with no attunement requirement is too fun when being summoned to help out in the Cathedral of the Deep.

                      • It’s unfortunate Wolnir’s Holy Sword isn’t as powerful as it should have been, however it isn’t as bad as everyone claims. There is a REASON faith builds have access to huge amounts of stackable damage enhancing buffs. Lingering Dragoncrest Ring +2 makes them last way longer too. Early game it’s great and no, the weapon art isn’t useless, although it could have been better. My biggest gripe is it can’t be held like the standard WotG miracle and that it’s a bit too slow.

The best thing From could have done with this weapon is slightly nerf the weapon art damage and drastically increase its casting speed. Like the Greatsword of Judgement or any of the other self-buffing weapons it should have also applied a mild short term blessed or lightning buff. The explosion expansion speed should be faster too, nearly instant. The casting speed boost, explosion expansion speed and a mild buff on the weapon art would make it drastically more viable for PvP and better for late/ng+ etc. PvE. The actual damage of the weapon itself is fine, though with the changes you could argue for a nerf. It’s a shame the Sage’s Ring doesn’t speed up the casting speed of the weapon art. This thing, if it did, would probably be a faith build favorite

                        • Anonymous

if you think about it, the Weapon Art is more useful than you think but: its less than half the required faith to cast, less FP needed, shorter casting time, comes with its own built in catalyst, having the thrust into the ground hit an enemy makes it usually impossible to escape, all at the cost of basically only halving the damage, sure theres better but for early game this could really be used more with its sheer potential and, you know, AoE attack funny

                          • Anonymous

Godsend for early faith builds due to its low requirements and availability. It gets hard outclassed late game by a blessed lothric greatsword or buffing a sunlight straight sword/dragonslayer axe in terms of raw damage but having a budget wrath of gods is nothing to scoff at. Having a greatsword moveset automatically means you can spank anything PvE might through at you with this bad boy.

                            • Pretty good reach, notable damage (tho purely physical), I enjoy the look of the weapon as well. Its WA is slow but can do a lot of damage. I think it is underplayed because it doesn't have a WA that combos into major damage and there are weapons like the greatsword of Judgment or the firelink greatsword that can buff themselves. It also lacks the perseverance of Morne's greathammer. I use it as a primary for one of my characters and it holds up in consecutive ng's. Give it a shot.

i made this instead of black serpent on my pyromancer character because i "wanted something to scale off my faith" and i heard black serpent was sh*t, i regret it deeply

Underrated thing about the sword's WA - You duck. And because DS3 is hitbox *****, this means you can dodge certain attacks meant to hit your chest or head, like a running silver knight attack. Time it right, you can punish with an explosion that'll knock 'em flat on their ass. Not many weapons offer this sorta thing- I know Stomp can, to an extent. Just don't forget Wolnir sword can do it too.

This sword is good in PVE, does decent damage. But you gotta be really high level for it to be useful in PVP. I'v got a SL286 character and i use this sword sometimes just for fun. It does ok if your good with greatswords, and iv always liked the looks of it. It's weapon art is hard to catch players though.

                                    • Anonymous

After many Strength only builds in the past I decided it was time for Str Faith but the lack of options early game left me feeling burned out until I got this, the first weapon to actually fit the build. It was ironically, a blessing.

                                      • It's not exactly easy to find weapons with innate Faith Scaling. It's not Buffeble but the W.A offsets that and it's actually got some good reach. It's a decent compliment to my Faith build and offsets Saint's Bident lower damage. My only regret was not obtaining it sooner where it could've been put to better use. I'm at 80+ now and I wont use it unless I need a source of Standard damage. I think FS should add the Abyssal Modifier to this, that would certainly make it worth it

                                        • Anonymous

This is a PVE weapon, pretty much end of discussion. In PVP, it has too many weakpoints. No hyper armor during the WA, dual scaling stats, and a predictable moveset. You can still win with skill, but you're going to be severely handicapped. As for PVE though, this sword is great for Paladin-type characters. If you start as a Knight, you only need one point of DEX extra to use it (and FTH, but you're gonna level that anyways.) Even at 10 Attunement, you have enough FP for three WAs. You can basically focus on VIG, VIT, STR, and FTH until higher levels. 18 Attunement is enough Great Heal and Sacred Oath, and enough FP to cast them twice or have four WAs. Learning how to use the WA properly is key. After a backstab, you will connect with the WA 99% with no punishment, which leaves the enemy prone for a second time which you can follow with a Charged R2. Learn to connect with the first hit of the WA as well, it deals decent damage and can break poise. And watch your FP, not having enough will perform the LONG animation for no damage.

                                          • Anonymous

I was tired of seeing everyone who invades low level using the same exact build. (DS axe/ dark hand twink) so i decided to make a more unique build- his name is "The fallen Paladin". And this weapon fit the character (and the build) incredibly well. A once holy sword now eroded away by the abyss goes so well with an exiled paladin. I put my dex to the minimum req, but strength/ faith to 20 and threw on the prisoners chain (15 free levels), untrue dark ring (Fashion), Knights ring and priestess ring (extra damage). All other levels went into vig and end (sl 37). For fashion i went with cathedral knight helm, fallen knight armor, fallen knight gaunlets and fallen knight leggings, perfect for the exiled paladin theme. I hit surprisingly hard with wolnirs sword on this build, not as hard as i could be if i wanted to be the most efficient asshole ever, but hard nonetheless. But honestly being super fucking op isn't fun for me, theres no feeling of accomplishment when wiping out an entire group of new players with my 10 billion ar ds axe. Like i said, I just wanted to make a low lvl build that was unique, that had a bit of character. Well thats all, just wanted to share my build and give this over looked weapon some love!

                                            • Anonymous

I know this weapon is seen as pretty shit, but I can't help but love it. In PVE off of any knock down you can pretty much get the weapon art off and blowing someone away with wrath of the Gods will never not be fun.

                                              • Anonymous

What? Wolf knight's greatsword is top tier... This weapon is just a shittier version of morne's greathammer, if M'sGH had lower str reqs nobody would even touch this.

                                                • Anonymous

This weapon is tied with the Wolf Knight's greatsword for the longest hitbox of all great swords. Which is misleading as the weapons animations appear much shorter. But like the Wolf Knight's great sword, due to semi-poor scaling with any single stat and being unbuffable, it's damage is quickly dwarfed leading to it's small range advantage being not worth the stat investments. That being said, 40/40 strength/faith will give you the most utility.

Also, the weapon art gives very little hyper armor and can barely tank through straight sword hits. There are better weapon arts that offer better utility.

                                                  • Anonymous

The only thing(s) this weapon needs to make the WA somewhat useful, is either creating a shockwave the instant the blade is thrusted into the earth, or make the WA uninterruptible.

                                                    • Anonymous

Wanna laugh your ass off? Take this beaut into the deacons fight and use the WA in the middle of the crowd. They all go flying and die instantly. XD

                                                      • Anonymous

                                                        Improvements to WA:

You know what would be amazing? If your initial stab(in the ground) had a shockwave that dealt no damage but immediately shoves the enemies to the ground. This would make the WA more viable but also retain it being balanced since your enemy is forced to roll perfectly through WotG.

                                                        • Anonymous

This weapon is just good fun. It's a middling greatsword, but if you can pull off the WA on someone, it's the most hilarious thing. Most of the invaders or people I have invaded don't seem to know what the WA is or how it works. Perhaps they think you're doing that poise-boosting weapon art that looks slightly similar. I've had people just rush toward me as I hit the weapon art and it slams into the ground, thinking they can get free hits. Then, boom. Knocked flat on your arse. Absolutely hysterical with laughter sometimes.

There is also a first hitbox on the ground, which you can occasionally get people in the foot with. So you could potentially do them 1600 damage, six hundred with the poke down and a thousand with the shockwave, depending on their absorptions. I've one shot phantoms before, but you usually have to hit them with the sword a few times afterwards.

It's so underused, and surprise is your only weapon. You'll only bait them into the WA once, so you have to make good use of it and keep an eye on player names, if you're invading. Don't be predictable, swap to something else after that first time.

                                                          • Anonymous

                                                            Found a use for it.
Whenever someone goes down a ladder to knock you off, just whip this thing out and use the wa to blast em into falling to their uncanny doom, they never see it coming....

I still feel like this should have been a faith moonlight greatsword like the r2 launches emit force or the delayed explosion like the cathedral Knights

                                                              • decent weapon for any FTH/STR build, Miyazaki and his team really went the distance with this weapons look. It's gives you a feeling of holy power when wielding it but you're also met with a feeling of despair knowing Wolnir's story. A weapon that tells a tell while doing decent damage and having a solid move set. LOVE IT!

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Maybe i neeed more faith to enjoy it. But all my regular heavy infused greatswords outdamage it, and i feel mornes version of the weapon is the same and it hurts more at 50/30 str/fth. Mornes obviously hurts more regular damage wise, but this thing needs a faster swing speed or something.

                                                                        • Anonymous

At 40 str/14 dex/40 fth this yielded 1352 damage against the same jobbers. The downward thrust of the weapon art seems to do slightly more damage than a one-handed R1 swing (485 vs. 481 against the firelink shrine jobbers with 40/14/40).

10th June patch buffed this sword considerably. The base damage was increased by around 20 so it has parity with several other Greatswords in terms of max-refine AR. The boost to the base damage also makes the scaling slightly more worthwhile. The biggest buff however was the addition of Hyper Armour to the Weapon Art, making the skill difficult for opponents to interrupt during the long windup time.TL;DR weapon is no longer absolute trash.

Does decently at 120 pvp, weapon art is used more to get them of you then actually damaging themat 40 str 40 dex 13 faith(the req(it doesnt scale with faith ffs stop asking)) it does 467, that 276 +191, a little bellow the claymore and can't be infused so i reccomend this weapon for lower level quality builds that focus on taking on multiple people. use a simple shield if you want to spam the weapon art

This sword reminds me of the Blind sword wielded by Selen Vinland from Demon's Souls. Upon closer inspection the semblence is lost to a degree, but its an unorthodox design just like the Blind.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Does that mean that the frame around the main blade was suppose to be the blade, but in a bigger and heavier version, before ? Is that right or... am I mistaken ?

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Started using this last night and found out some things: 1) You are only able to take damage during the first part of the skills animation. After the sword hits the ground you are immune until it completes the cast. 2) The downard stab at the start of the skill also damages enemies. 3) The skills knocks away most enemies, and stumbles every non boss I've used it on if it didn't knock away. 4) Pretty sure the WotG does scale on Faith (and hence the faith requirement) as when I had 13 faith it was doing significantly less than when I had 20 faith after I respecced my character to be more faith based. Can't 100% confirm the last one though.

It has a cool design and is the soul weapon of a cool boss but it's weapon skill is the favorite miracle among worthless unworthy scrubs. The weapons in this game are garbage. Fromsoft put more effort into the intricacy of the trick weapons in the bloodborne DLC than they did for the whole of Ds3
