Yoel of Londor is a NPC in Dark Souls 3.
Yoel of Londor Information
You must obtain this NPC before you kill the Abyss Watchers or else you will find him dead and therefore unable to bring him back to Firelink Shrine. On the same subject, he will also die in the Firelink Shrine after you kill the Abyss Watchers. To start his questline, select "Draw Out True Strength" from his dialogue a total of 5 times before you kill the Abyss Watchers and when he dies, Yuria of Londor will take his place.
In the rare case that all stats are maxed out and you are fully levelled, you cannot "Draw Out True Strength", therefore you cannot procceed with his questline, making it impossible to get Yuria to spawn.
- Gives the "Beckon" Gesture.
- Offers services as a Merchant, see Items Sold below.
- He will be dead if not recruited before opening the door to the Catacombs of Carthus after defeating the Abyss Watchers (has not been tested, but to be safe dont fight the Abyss Watchers before recruting him.)
- Once you have defeated the Abyss Watchers and reach the hanging bridge in the Catacombs of Carthus, he will appear dead at Hanging Bridge. You can explore the catacombs without triggering his death, just don't approach and do not cross the hanging bridge.
- However, Yuria only appears if you have used Yoel´s service five times to receive "ample strength", as he puts it. Be sure to get all five Dark Sigil from him before you enter the area otherwise Yuria will not spawn.
- Do NOT cleanse your Dark Sigil if you intend to complete these characters' storyline. Yuria will refuse to speak with you, and then will vanish from Firelink.
- Appears dead after receiving all five Dark Sigils and resetting zone.
- If you kill him after drawing out true strength 5 times, Yuria will still appear and her questline will continue as normal, except that Yoel's corpse will not be next to her.
Location
- You can find Yoel of Londor at Undead Settlement, where he will offer you his service. He is located just below the Foot of the High Wall bonfire). After accepting, he will relocate to Firelink Shrine and operate as a merchant. To find him in Firelink approach Blacksmith Andre, and go left, and make a left down the far hallway.
Hollowing and Levels
After Yoel moves to Firelink Shrine, select "Draw Out True Strength" from his menu options to perform this. After you use this 5 times, he will die and Yuria of Londor will appear. The opportunity to receive these free levels is tied to your Hollowing stat, which increases each time you die by an amount equal to the number of Dark Sigils you have. The first level is available with no requirements, the second at 2 hollowing, the third at 6 hollowing, the fourth at 12 hollowing, and the fifth at 15 hollowing.
As amount of hollowing per death is equal to the number of Dark Sigils you have, you only need to die twice between each next level, except for the last where you only need to die once. You will need all 5 Dark Sigils from him to achieve the Usurpation of Fire ending.
Warning: Will die prematurely if removing/healing Dark Sigils prior to receiving all 5 sigils and furthering the Yoel/Yuria questline ending the possibility of completing that questine for that NG.
Drops
- Hollow's Ashes (spawns at Untended Graves, see below) - but ONLY when he dies before the player draws out true strength five times. This can happen in three ways:
- By giving the Fire Keeper Soul to the Firelink Shrine Fire Keeper and curing the curse.
- By defeating the Abyss Watchers without 5 Dark Sigils in your inventory.
- By killing Yoel without 5 Dark Sigils in your inventory.
- Yoel does not "drop" his ashes where he dies like other NPCs. Instead, if he dies / is killed in one of the ways listed above, a corpse bearing Hollow's Ashes will spawn in Untended Graves. It can be found occupying what would be Yoel's spot in the dark Firelink Shrine.

- Earlier designs suggest that the Pilgrims were once akin to Man Serpents

"Ohh… Ohh, then it’s true… A Champion of Ash, as I live and breathe. To be in your presence is a great honour. I am Yoel of Londor, a pilgrim as you can see, only…Somehow, I've failed to die as was ordained. Well, perhaps my calling lies elsewhere. Say, Champion of Ash, how does the idea of taking me into your service strike you? I was once a sorcerer. Surely I can be of use."
Accept/Decline his services
(Declining) "Ahh, mm, yes, of course. An accursed pilgrim has no place in your honourable service. But if a lost soul should encounter a legend such as you, could that be anything but a movement of fate? I will remain in this spot. Praying solemnly that you might have a change of heart." (Remains on the spot)
(Talk) "Ahh, Champion of Ash. Have you had a change of heart? I beg of you, take me into your service."
(Accepting) "Ohh. I am honoured, truly. I should be dead, yet you have granted me purpose anew. I Yoel of Londor, do solemnly swear myself to you." (Teleports/fades out)
Second encounter (Firelink Shrine)
Oh, our Champion of Ash, welcome home. This pilgrim, with a debt in death, hardly deserves to behold this divine flame. And I never would have, had you not taken me into your service. I thank you dearly for this... And assure you of my leal service."
(Talk) "As I have said, I was once a sorcerer. Alas, the magic of Londor is a far cry from the wonders of Vinheim. But I can teach you what I know. Perhaps more importantly... I believe that I can help tease out your true strength. We pilgrims of Londor are keenly aware. That those branded by the Darksign possess something quite special..."
(Draw Out True Strength) "Then, shall we begin? Bearer of the Darksign, let your true strength shine..."
(Talk) "Oh, our Champion of Ash, welcome back. I would do anything for my master, just say the word."
(Leaving) "Be safe, Champion of Ash"
(5 sigils) "Ahh, you have attained ample strength. All will soon be clear, my good Lord..."

I sill remember my first playthrough. When I first encountered him, he was saying, "Please, undo my shackles. Grant me death." So I killed him. And I get chastised for "killing undead for sport." I thought that's what you wanted!!!!

Yoel of Londor will die once step in these area after the Catacombs of Carthus Bonfire:-
1. The dead end path where you can take an ember and get invaded by Knight Slayer Tsorig with Fume Ultra Greatsword (if you are ember).
2. After the crystal lizard and step in the red eye skeleton with Carthus Curved Greatsword area. He will die even you have not yet step on the Hanging Bridge because you have to step pass through this area.
***Draw Out True Strength 5 times before you step into these 2 areas if you want to meet Yuria of Londor***

But Yoel ist dead at the firelink place as well. Are they connected or is this coincidence and Yoel will get revived later?

Welp, I needed Yuria's tome to my dark build, but didn't know about her relation to this guy's questline. I didn't went for his free levels to stay sexy and now she will never appear until NG+ :(
He will not be dead if you kill abyss watchers before recruiting him.
He will only be dead if you put step into catacombs and lighting the bonfire.

Article has a mistake - He doesn't die when you kill abyss watchers, it's some time after entering the catacombs.
Not entirely sure when, though. Merely entering doesn't seem to be enough.

So why would you take the free 5 levels early on when it only costs like 3000 souls per level? thats easy to grind out in a few moments naturally. wouldnt it just be better to accept the 5 free levels later on when it actually costs like several tens of thousands of souls to level up one level, thats more value.

yoel remains alive even after killing abyss watchers, i just tested. didn't enter the catacomb though. (also i killed the abyss watchers with millwood axe, that thing is badass)

btw the part that he disappears after entering the catacombs is wrong. ive just killed the abyss watchers, went into the catacombs until i reached the first bonfire, realized that i still died zero times and went back to firelink just to check. and he was still there. at this point ive already killed the deacons and progressed patches and onion knights quests. ive also never talked to yoel in firelink before but i did get him to go there. i drew out true strength like normal. died 15 times in the undead settlement like usual and went back and completed the quest, yuria still appeared as normal as well.

Drops 1000 souls, so it's a decent idea to kill him after drawing out strength 5 times. He's going to die almost immediately anyways, and he even thanks you for killing him.

Did NG+ to get the dark sigel ending, and got stuck on that mage area (the mage is the hardest boss if you don't have a mage character), so decided to go to the catacombs instead. Didn't realize that that's what kills the guy, so now I have to either finish this game and play NG++, start a new game all over again to get this quest, or just quit playing the game.
I've wasted so much time on this game at this point that I'm just gonna watch the endgame spoilers and call it good.

I found him lying dead on the floor in Firelink Shrine and was like "wtf I must've done something wrong" because it felt like such an abrupt ending of his story. Then I check info about him here and find out he died because I opened up the path to the Catacombs too soon. No explanation as to why or anything. Your story just gets destroyed for such a stupid action you couldn't have possibly guessed, because there's never any mention or hint or whatsoever in the game of the two events being connected.
This to me feels like being farted on the face by whoever designed this, like **** off.
I could go on, but I want to end my rant. To end on a good note, all of the above does not take away from the fact that Dark Souls 3 is an extraordinary game.

So I did what a previous poster said to bone out after abyss watchers and hell live. He did, but only until I reached hollowing 32 he died. I didn't progress the game at all just kept killing myself

Playing DS3 now and just beat Abyss Watchers and walked down into the catacombs. I was half way to the first bridge when I remembered I didn't get the other 4 sigils and went back to check on Yoel. Strangely, he was still alive. Don't know if this is a glitch or if the info on top is wrong.

Would recommend going to the undead settlement bonfire to gain the 16 hollowing, and running off the ledge right behind it, it spawns your souls right where you respawn and takes 2 seconds to walk off again.

After some testing and confusion, I think when he dies depends on whether you talk to him when he first appears in Firelink shrine after you accept his service. If you talk to him, he dies after activating the altar in the Abyss Watcher's arena that leads to the Catacombs. If you don't talk to him, he dies after crossing the collapsable bridge in the Catacombs. This idea came about when i saw him still alive after activating the altar in the Abyss Watcher's arena. More testing may still be required.

Wow what r the chances, i recruit him and forgot he existed till after i defeated a abyss watcher. Luckily i did not proceed and came to this page to understand his functions. However i did happen to waste the reversing of my hollowing, as i needed to visit 3 levels hollowing to draw out my characters strength.

As a noob i went to firelink to level up a bit more because u thought he would level me up if u waited more but u found him dead with a woman standing near him. I was really sad at the time because I had taken a liking in him so I paid my respects by bowing

Wiki page has inconsistency; the "Yoel of Londor Information" section says that he will die and his corpse spawn at the hanging bridge in Carthus Catacombs if you enter the hanging bridge area, and that you just have to not approach the hanging bridge to avoid this happening. However, the "Drops" section says that he will die if you kill the Abyss Watchers without at least 5 Dark Sigils. It is likely that both notes are true, however the differing information in different sections of the same page is potentially confusing.

It seems like Yoel only offers you the option to Draw out True Strength each time you die. I'm up to right before the Abyss Watchers fight and have only been able to do it 3 times in total. Let's see if I can confirm this by jumping repeatedly to my death.

Anyone else find his dialogue at the initial encounter peculiar? "... I've failed to die as was ordained." strikes me as interesting, the use of the word "ordain" in particular. Ordain has two definitions: 1. confer holy orders. 2. order or decree (something) officially. (I got these definitions from Google btw.) It seems that this dialogue uses the second definition, but I provided both in case anyone has a different line of thought. I find it a bit odd that Yoel (as well as all the pilgrims from Londor) was given official orders to travel to Lothric and die. Yuria does mention later that, thanks to us, Yoel's soul is redeemed after we gain 5 dark sigils. What I find interesting is that, if the Ashen One kills Yoel after we gain 5 sigils, he thanks them with his final breath. He ends up dying either way, so I wonder if he died naturally after we gain the sigils, or if Yuria kills him. I'm not sure what to make of it all, but that's why I'm here in the comments section! The pilgrims are very interesting to me, and I'm not sure why. Admittedly, my Souls lore is a bit rusty, so if I am touching upon a topic that has already been covered, let me know.

He doesn't die if you open the Catacombs, I left him alive without unlocking my power and went as far into the Catacombs as collecting the undead bone shard near the entrance. I went back to Firelink and he was still alive and offering his services as before. I think the page should be updated.

I think I just discovered a glitch. I drew out my true strength but did not receive a dark sigil. Pretty much keeping me from completing the quest line.

I'm new to this game and need some clarification. So (correct me if I'm wrong) Hollowing is purely visual and has no effect on gameplay, and therefore if you don't care if your character looks like a mummy this guy gives you 5 free levels with no downsides?

Crossing the rope bridge in catacombs is not the trigger for his death without drawing out your strength. I always come around and unlock the gate which leads into the narrow way where Tsorig invades and return to the bonfire before going near the bridge. I believe that lever is the actual trigger and maybe the bridge is a backup trigger if you skip the shortcut

This needs to be updated because i killed the Abyss Watchers and hes still alive with no strength drawn out.
He can die much sooner than we thought. I just got him to come to Firelink, teased out the inner strength 5 times, killed myself another 2 times after, then he was dead and Yuria spawned. I've just got to the Undead Settlement, and only just went through the gate with the dogs to the 2nd bonfire in the area.

Confirmed safe to kill Abyss Watchers but Yoel will die if you ENTER Catacombs (white text appearing Catacombs of Carthus). So level up as much as you can and 'draw out true strength' before pressing on.

I feel betrayed by Yoel, he died on me before I even went to the hanging bridge. The time i got closest to that Bridge was by getting the Knightslayer Tsorig invade.

This is wrong man. Yoel died after I used all 5 dark strengths. I had only opened the gate to the abyss watchers but hadn't even left farron keep. So he CAN and WILL die before the catacombs....also, obvs, before the abyss watcher fight as well.
