Darkwraith is an Enemy in Dark Souls 3

 Darkwraith Enemy Description

  • Darkwraith Knights wear the Dark Set armour.
  • Almost indistinguishable from the Darkwraiths of New Londo.

Darkwraith Location

  • One can be found at the bottom of the lift under the Tower on the Wall bonfire in High Wall of Lothric after following Leonhard's questline. Referred as "Special".
  • Another one is located near the Farron Keep bonfire. Head left and follow the great walls to find it. It is guarding a Coal item.
  • Two of them are attacking the Abyss Watchers stronghold, near Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire.

Darkwraith Combat Information

  • Health (Special/Regular): NG (692), NG+ (~1460), NG++ (??), NG+3 (??), NG+4 (??).
  • Uses Dark Sword with very fast continuous swings and very high poise. Deals Standard Damage or Thrust Damage.
  • Uses Dark Hand  that serves as a magical shield which allow them a guardbreaking grab attack. Deals Dark Damage.
  • Can be backstabbed, parried, and riposted.
  • Abyssal enemy, therefore weak to Farron Greatsword and Wolf Knight's Greatsword.
  • Neither weak nor resistant to Slash Damage.
  • Resistant to most types of damages, Bleed and Frostbite.
  • Despite their slim posture, they have very high poise.
  • Hitting them before they get hyper armor (they get this during attacks) with very heavy weapons can stun lock them.
  • Cannot be poisoned by the player. The Ghrus who cast poison cloud may be able to inflict poison, needs confirmation.

Darkwraith Trivia and Notes

  • Returning enemy from Dark Souls 1.
  • Darkwraiths will drop 2 Estus refills if they drop any.
  • After killing all the Ghru's in their path if they survive, they will patrol in front of the Abyss Watchers chamber. They can be easily killed because they won't enter the chamber leaving them open to safe attacks.
  • They will attack all other enemies in the area, In Farron Keep, they will attack Ghru's within their aggro radius, which a player can use to his/her advantage.
  • They leave their swords behind when they die.
  • The Special Darkwraith in the High Wall of Lothric does respawn, and can drop all regular Darkwraith items giving an early chance to score the Dark Sword.

Great early-game farming spot. Hit him with an arrow from the lift, wait for him to reach the archway, then trigger the lift and pocket 2750 souls. Rinse and repeat.

      • Tower on the Wall one can be farmed by hitting him with an arrow from the lift, waiting until he's at the archway, then trigger the lift and he'll fall to his death = 2750 souls. Rinse and repeat.

The wraith guarding the Sage's Coal in Farron Keep yields 2500 souls instead of 500 for some reason. Good for farming when you need the tower key/ onion set for example.

Mfs got to keep their poise from Dark Souls 1 whereas we get stuck with nothing and have to deal with getting stunlocked by so much as a slight gust of wind, The fact that there's tons of enemies in this game that have actual poise, some even having nigh-unbreakable poise that allows them to face-tank charged UGS R2s without even flinching whereas we get stunlocked and/or ragdolled/pancaked by everything will never cease to bother me

"Can be backstabbed". Clearly whoever wrote hasnt tried backstabbing them. They use that dark grab attack to avoid it every single time lol

To defeat the Dark Souls 1 enemy, you must use the Dark Souls 1 mindset.

this may be a stupid question but how are the DarkWraiths edgy so from what i can gather you wear a skull or don't speak when they cant and simply kill people because its your job

I don't get it people like nito when he basically is a edgelord if what i can gather is correct regarding the wraiths

When the 2 of them spawn and slowly walk towards the gate and kill everything in their way, I can't help but think of the 2 badass mexican hitmen in Breaking Bad...

The two wariths outside of the watchers boss area were probably on their way to fight the abyss watchers themselves

I heard stories about how hard these guys can be. Travelled down the elevator in the Tower on the Wall, and beat the Darkwraith on my first try. Probably a fluke though.

I hated these guys and their surprise suck attack but I decided to wear their armor and join the ranks and give others the suck

fun fact: if you use the slumbering dragoncrest ring or spook the darkwraith that drops the red eye orb is open for an easy backstab, as he is facing away from you

Not sure if the observation has been made before but I’ve realized that they were the 4 kings of New Londo and there are only 4 appearances of the dark wraiths in Dark Souls 3. I understand the kings were killed in the first game but I wonder if they did this on purpose or if it is coincidence.

Wait a sec. Their looted armor is weak to strike, with only 19.530 strike absorption but an actual Darkwraith enemy is resistant to strike damage? Something is wrong here.

I usually bring the black knight from road of sacrifice to the farron perimeter and watch a good fight between him and the two darkwraiths. Then sweep in at the last minute to claim the spoils.

                                          • Anonymous

I once thought very loathesome of these enemies and their “suck”. But then I joined their ranks and found purpose.
I now go about invading worlds filled with embers destroying the host and whoever dares defy me in that world, I’m stronger than ever before and no man or woman is safe when the darkwraiths roam about. Make all the precautions you want the darkwraiths with still get you and suck your life force out of your body.

I killed the two darkraiths at 692 HP, 690 doesn't kill but 692 as a hit does, I highly doubt they start with 8 damage done to them,

                                              • Anonymous

Being near one, you can hear they have an eerie atmospheric ambiance to them, very reminiscent of being in New Londo Ruins. Wear some high quality headphones and stalk them to feel like you’re back with the OG Darkwraiths.

                                                • the two just before the abyss watchers arena spawn together, only a few meters apart, and THEY RESPAWN. from the bonfire of the shortcut, you can kite them, but they will follow you all the way to the crystal beast and past it to the other area.

                                                  • Anonymous

they cannot be backstabed and parry them in 60 fps is more luck than time, parry in this game is pure loteria bullshit

                                                    • Anonymous

These guys are your best weapon in the swamp. Just messed around a bit and lured them past the bonfire and trough the opening in the wall down in the swamp. They kill everything with ease as long as both are still alive. They cleared out most of the ghurs, elder ghurs and slugs until they finally got killed from the crab, very fun to watch.

                                                      • Anonymous

I cheesed the tower wraith: leave elevator, shoot tow times, make a step back and let the elevator lift you to safety. Any Tips for a fair fight instead?

                                                        • The one down the elevator in the High Wall can absolutely drop things besides just the Red Eye Orb. Not sure about everything he can drop, but I've gotten his sword multiple times now. < Screenshot for proof

                                                          • Anonymous

wait. ok i am on my first playthrough and i actually use these darkwraiths as a way to get souls. but I know they drop more than 500 souls because i get 2500 souls

                                                            • Anonymous

So.... turns out that the special darkwraith does drop loot other than the red eye orb. As in, everything else.

                                                              • Anonymous

Their poise is ridiculous, I'm pretty sure dark sword shouldn't count as a heavy weapon but you literally can't trade with them because you'll never stagger them. Another cheeseworthy enemy to add to the list.

                                                                • Anonymous

They aren’t very resistant to lightning. I used wrath of the god and lightning stake at 45 faith with a +10 canvas talisman and wrath of the gods did 562 and at point blank range a direct hit lightning stake did 604-602 damage. I don’t know why there is minor variation but as you can tell they aren’t exactly resistant to lightning damage if it’s that effective and that much more effective than something they aren’t resistant to.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Can we change the drop rate of the dark sword from frequently to rare? I've killed them around 30 times now while having rusted coins activated and I still have not gotten a sword. FFS I have 56 cracked red eye orbs

                                                                    • I believe they are immune to Alluring skulls as well (don't think that was stated above). Definitely was a struggle for me fighting them for the first time (they still tend to give me trouble). The high poise, fast attacks, heavy hitting grappling attack, relatively high health, good stuff for sure. In my experience, well placed spacing and their affinity to attack other enemies is their downfall.

                                                                      • Anonymous

The dark hand that they use has 100% magic absorbtion. You cannot damage them with sorceries while they use that shield.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

(my luck is 11 but i dont use anything to bost my luck)

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Neat article; Just a quick question tho: WHY DAFUQ DO THEY HAVE SO MUCH POISE AND I CAN'T HAS AS MUCH??? *Crying Intensifies*

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I still play the 1.00 version, and both dark wraiths in farron keep give me 2500 souls (each). So I guess they changed it to 500 in later versions.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

If the darkwraiths are connected to the Abbyss and they drop cracked red eye orbs, then does that mean that every enemy with red eyes has been corrupted by the Abbyss. But in the Abbyss Watchers fight, the red eyed version is the one helping us, or are we helping it. Think about is The Abbyss Watchers are the ones keeping the Abbyss from taking over and defeating them provides the opportunity to take over the world. That may be why The Flame doesn't explode like it has in previous games. It shrivels because darkness has already plunged the world into chaos. It's Like what Elfrida said, Its just the flame shimmering at misguided ash.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

I personally enjoy luring the Black Knight from down past the perimeter bonfire to them. So far it's 3-2 in the Knight's favour, but pretty even! All it takes is one arrow and some running.

                                                                                                        • They drop these things like Dre drops beats. Good lord I maxed out the 99 in my inventory and storage in a day farming these guys for Pale Tongues. To bad they don't sell for much.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

I only had 12 luck at the time, so if you have higher luck (or use the Symbol of Avarice) you should be able to farm them even quicker.

                                                                                                            • Farron Abyss Watchers have history of fighting against spread of the abyss, it would not be strange for abyss recognize enemy and to fight back sending darkwraights against them. They are clearly headed to fight them. Furthermore I clearly seen them aggro each other through fog gate when dying defeated by watchers.
