Frostbite Notes

  • Frost is very effective against most knights or enemies that still have flesh.
  • Particularly effective against some bosses, most notably the Dragonslayer Armour and Oceiros, the Consumed King.
  • If Frostbite injures an enemy (but is not fatal), a sound of breaking ice can be heard. However, if Frostbite is fatal, there is no sound effect.
  • If fire damage is applied to the target it will remove the Frostbitten effect, allowing for more frostbite damage to be applied.
  • Holding a torch speeds up frostbite recovery.
  • Overhauled in 1.11 patch.

I like how people in this comment section **** on frost for being "useless" (11% hp damage and reduces DR by 7%) when blessed infusion/damage exists (gives unnoticablly small hp regen and is good for killing two types of enemies that are weak to other damage sources that are far more accessable and affect way more enemies at the same time)

Frostbite is so slept on because it's on so few weapons. Far more than just a 'glorified toxic', it's the best status in the game. No other status effect does as much as frostbite does, and that's probably why it's so rare compared to bleed. Imagine if bleed also slowed down your stamina regen, made you more vulnerable to attacks, and you could quickly be frostbitten again just by being hit with fire damage. This one status does so much/

Would have been nice if frost damage and the frost effect was able to be inflicted through a ranged spell.

Instead of stamina regen debuff, it should slow down player's movement like it should logically do. Otherwise it's just a glorified toxic. But hey, at least it works... Somehow.

i feel like in the 'cured' section it should say "receiving fire damage" considering a strat I've seen used is to proc frostbite on a boss, then use an off-hand fire infused weapon to reset their frost-bite level, and proc frostbite again super quickly

Only does 346 damage to Gael, that's only 2.3% of his max hp (15037) if only counting phase 2/3 then 3.6%(9453hp). And bleed also only does 460 damage(3.05% of 15037 or 4.8% of 9453) with Reinforced Club +10.

Somebody once mentioned about buffing a innate bleed weapon with this, and how cool it may be if they both pec at the same time. Maybe on hollow infused Bandit's Knife or Barbed Straight Sword?
Shame you can't buff shields with weapon buffs. It would've been fun to buff the Bonewheel Shield.

I was playing around with a build around +5 Friede's Great Scythe, and Snap Freeze, 40DEX/40INT. I crushed Dragonslayer Armour in less than 60 seconds literally! Mind you I have always had a bit difficulty with him over the years so for me this was amazing. So when it comes to PVE Frost is defiantly viable!!!

build idea for scary damage burst for PvP , take a bandit knife and use frozen blade on it , bleed + frostbite build up at almost same speed , most players get bleed when under 50% hp and for frost around that too...combine both and you got a big burst of damage , and remember , build ups gets applied even when dodged

equipment tip : have a spare bleed gem weapon in case bleeding the target is slower than frostbite since the dagger will inflict 30 bleed + 45 frostbite which would be pretty effective in low level invasions ( under SL 35 )

So I understand, the info says that if you hit someone for frostbite to the point they are bitten, you can then hit them with a fire/chaos weapon, the frostbite resets and then you can quickly build it up again and repeat for max damage? Do I have my facts straight? Because this seems like it would be very useful against Gael on my NG+7. I usually poison and toxic him at the same time, then work on hitting him with frostbite, but if this works, every time I hear the glass breaking sound, I will hit him with a chaos dagger and start again. If anyone has any facts that they can pass along, I would be grateful. Thanks guys.

Frostbite and poison are not Worth any investment at all,I would highly recommend using what ever secondary weakness enemies have as frost and poison compared to other forms of elemental damage are outclassed by the weapons other buffs are on and you cannot infuse nor buff with frost making it terrible. Maybe some specific frost spells are usuable? But again Frost and poison are simply inferior to literally everything else. Best to think Frost specifically doesn't even exist in the game I believe.

I keep getting those weird fake hits that don't land during a roll, but makes a sound, adding frostbite stack, but do zero damage when it does prop I don't understand what's going on, anyone have this happening or explain?

                            • Anonymous

Frostbite is everywhere at lower levels with Vordt's hammer and Irithyll straight sword. Some co-op team comes at you with Fallen Knight sets and enough spam to feed a family, you can get slapped with it fairly easily after rolling through an Irithyll/Vordt R1 whiff-blender that builds it up almost immediately. Easy to avoid if you're watching for it, but that first time it gets you is a real facepalm moment.

How fast is a 'tick'? For Snap Freeze; is it 15 buildup per second?
I ask because of the other 'cloud' spells, i.e., Pestilent Mist, which damages quickly, although buildup is equal to Poison Mist (don't know how fast Toxic Mist buildup is though).

Weapons with frostbite accompanied with the soldering iron is a combo you should not underestimate. It's pretty good.

                                  • so i read about the fire damage nullifying frostbite and deceided to test it on a mob, afterwards, i found myself testing frozen weapon every weapon i could think of, here's the results:
testing was done against the hand saw mob at the dilapidaed bridge, where hodrick invades you

                                    crow quills: 1H=3hits; 2H=4 hits
brigand twindaggers: 1H=3 hits; 2h=4 hits
parrying dagger: 3 hits, both 1H and 2H
                                    long sword: 3 hits
broadsword: 3 hits(missing one hit in a combo is enough to make it a 4 hit the next time you try to combo)
bastard sword: 3 hits(from here on out i'll write only those that don't take 3 hits)
sellsword twinblades: 1H=3 hits; 2H=hits(2 L1 is enough to proc it)
                                    corvian scythe(raw+4) 1H=3 hits; 2 hits if counter attack;

...and that's about it, so in short, unlike (natural?)bleed, frozen weapon's freeze buildup doesn't scale wih weapon type, the only difference is if you're using a dual wield weapon
tl;dr frozen weapon is best used with a dagger in the right hand and a fire weapon in the left.

Beautifully broken: Right hand Irithyll straight sword, left hand Fire or Chaos infused curved sword or rapier (pyro flame combustion works, and fire surge is just perfect).

2 hits with the frost (slashing hits seem to do more frost, you'll need 3 with thrust)
those 2 hits will always proc frostbite for good damage, without any titanite investment on the sword
then l1 to use the curved sword

                                      Just get into a rhythm - dodge attack, if he has lag, r1 r1 l1 or l1 r1 r1
                                      Whichever you prefer
Either way, you kill him fast. I kinda like l1 r1 r1 more (Fire, ice, ice), as he seems more docile when he's frostbitten.

It also seems as though hitting him with fire damage doesn't remove frost Buildup, just the status effect
So if I do a rolling attack and a slashing attack (not quite enough for a frostbite proc), and then hit with fire, frostbite will proc on the next ice attack.

I feel (and I'm an idiot, so whatever) like a pyro could use this in pvp. Pyro flame, ice weapon. If you deal most of your damage with pyro, but brawl up-close with ice, it seems like you end up with 2 ways to kill your opponent - catch 'em with flames, or proc the frostbite. Cud b gud

Will fire damage cancel out frost buildup or is it just frostbite? I'm thinking of getting a few people together to trap someone in a room and have one person cast snap freeze and the other hold fire stream on the invader. Having frostbite proc every few seconds would kill someone pretty fast

                                        • Anonymous

most op status effect against bosses as its easier to apply than bleed especially with vordts hammer and you can reset the status effect with fire damage to proc the flat damage plus % of max hp damage multiple time. not as good in pvp but still useful.

The Pontiff Knight Great Scythe when using weapon art has 220 frostbite in the ice ring and buildup 55 frostbite on weapon.

Have to admit, getting frostbitten proc'd through rolls is rather irritating. But maybe this can be used offensively towards someone rolling Vordts effectively?

                                              • Anonymous

In conclusion, the only bosses I was not able to frostbite were Curse Rotted Greatwood, Old Demon King, High Lord Wolnir, and Yhorm the Giant? (unsure, as was not able to test this, so it might be possible). So, it definitally works on almost every boss in the entire game.

Can confirm, both the bird he rides on and nameless king himself are very suseptable to frostbite! Made that fight much easier than it usually is for me. Would frostbite them in 2 swings with vordt's great hammer.

                                                  • Anonymous

Ancient Wyvern can be frostbitten as well. Just beat him fighting on the ground with vordts great hammer and snap freeze. if you can hit his neck or tail; it's much better. He is very resistant to it, however. Hitting his feet it took maybe 10-12 2hR1s to proc. 75 per swing and then suddenly 600 or so.

                                                    • Anonymous

From what I can tell, most of the bosses in the game can be frostbitten and it is often a very useful tactic to use against them.
Here are the ones I know for sure I have been able to inflict frostbite on.
                                                      Dancer of the Boreal Valley
                                                      Oceiros, the Consumed King
                                                      Champion Gundyr
                                                      Crystal Sage
                                                      Abyss Watchers
                                                      Deacons of the Deep
                                                      Pontiff Sulyvahn
                                                      Dragonslayer Armor
                                                      Sister Friede and Father Ariandel

I have found it to be most useful against Dragonslayer, Champion Gundyr, Pontiff Sulyvhan, Sister Friede, Abyss Watchers.

Does anyone know the percentage of HP lost with frostbite? Is it a flat percentage like bleed? It seems to also get the counter hit boost that bleed does whereif you are frostbitten on a counter hit it will do bonus damage?

                                                        • Anonymous

is there a way to tell if an enemy is frostbitten? i think i see when it happens. like their torso has steam come out for a second or 2. but is there a way to know how long it lasts or any other indication. i guess if i knew how long it last i could guesstimate when it would go away IF i saw when it actually set in.

Here's an idea: make frost weaponry deal bonus damage to frostbitten opponents. Perhaps increase the damage dealt by a percentage equal to the frost aux effect on the weapon. Because right now there's no reason to keep using frostbite once your opponent is frostbitten. Although it would make the outrider knights a bit more frightening.

                                                            • Anonymous

Make it a two-stage effect. Once frostbite triggers once, you take the normal effects, if it triggers again, freeze the enemy for like a second, or something punishing along those lines.

                                                              • Anonymous

Can anyone confirm that Luck affects the frostbite buildup? I'm planning on doing a Frost build with 40 luck but i need to know if it's worth the investment

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

Make it so that you can only have 2 stacks of frostbite, frostbite and frozen, when frost bitten you become overencumbered and fat role, when frozen you can't move and can only swing your sword and use your shield.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Been reading through the comments, and I have an idea. Frost should have 2 available infusions, cold and ice. Cold infusions give 30 frost in exchange for slight physical damage reduction. Ice infusions give 65 frost in exchange for twice as much damage mitigation. This along with a post saying frost should stack would be a very fun and viable build.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

This is actually useful to know, imo.

                                                                          • Anonymous

The tiny dmg burst seems to be max hp% based, but as mentionned, it's really low.Frostbite weapons cannot be infused or buffed, and the frostbite effect sux atm, both PvE and PvP. But hey, it's a "cool" effect.Still expecting cooler.Tested with the Pontiff Knight Great Scythe. Btw, its weapon art builds up around 60 frostbite (I'm talking of the freezy-wavy animation, which is god***** too long), and the buff makes each hit building up around 30/35 frostbite.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

I'd like to know as Brody's has 50, and the irythrill straight sword has 35, from what I've seen from PVP against these weapons, frost pretty much can't be inflicted in PVP and I'm unsure of its nature. I was hoping for frost weapons. But not like this

                                                                                • Anonymous

It's weird that the Fleshbite Ring covers Poison, Bleed, Frost, and Curse, and that there are Poisonbite, Bloodbite and Cursebite Rings, but no Frostbite Ring. Especially considering that all four of the types covered by the Speckled Plate Ring have their own individual rings. But I guess this mechanic is such trash you'd never wear a Frostbite Ring, anyway

                                                                                    • Anonymous

With no Chloranthy Ring it takes about seven seconds to regain all my stamina at endurance 20 while frostbitten. With the Chloranthy Ring it takes about 6 seconds. With about 4 seconds with 20 endurance, the Chloranthy Ring, and no forstbitten. It does not matter what your frost resistance is frost will only do 137 damage. Frostbite need a lot more work on it to be viable to be useful in pve or pvp. I did not take into account the second or two it takes to begin your stamina regen if you over draw your stamina.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Moss clump radiating gentle heat and light. Reduces frost build-up. Cures frostbite status. Frost accumulates in the body causing frostbite, which saps one's health, lowers absorption, and slows stamina recovery. Weapons imbued with frost are a rare thing indeed, most of them originating in the Boreal Valley.
