Bastard Sword is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.
A widely-used heavy greatsword normally wielded with two hands.
Broad horizontal sweeping attacks make this sword effective against multiple enemies, but unwieldy in narrow spaces.
Skill: Stomp
Use one's weight to lunge forward with a low stance and increased poise, and follow with a strong attack for an upward slash.
Notes and Tips:
- Can be Infused or Buffed.
- Reinforced with Titanite.
- Wielded by the Red Knight in the cover art.
- All weapons have motion values assigned to each attack, which are modifiers to AR that are associated with the attack being used.
- All Greatswords have a motion value of 195 on backstab, 245 on riposte, and 60 + 220 on Hornet Ring riposte. The motion value of a Greatsword does not change with Hornet Ring.
- The Bastard Sword is the shortest greatsword with a range of 31.4253xl on the 1h R1 and 34.161xl on the 2h R1.
- The Bastard Sword has Sweeping R2s when 2h.
- Greatswords are a weapon class that utilizes Hyper Armor on the 2h R1, R2, Rolling R1, Rolling R2, Running R1, and Jumping Attack. Hyper Armor prevents you from being staggered during its active frames.
- Note that this information is all measured in 60 frames per second (FPS).
- Less FPS means a faster action. If you play on console at 30 FPS, the displayed values will be halved.
- It is also important to note that while this is not the frame data for attack speed and recovery, those values are fairly similar to the ones listed.

- Poise is a modifier to how effective Hyper Armor can be at preventing stagger.
- Poise health is another component of Hyper Armor. Most standard attacks reset your poise health to 80%, most weapon arts reset it to 100%, and waiting around 30 seconds without getting hit will also reset to 100%. What this means is that there are two different poise breakpoints that you need to keep in mind; there is an "infinite trade" breakpoint and a "trade once with reset" breakpoint, both of which are displayed in the poise calculator. As I mentioned above, most weapon arts reset your poise health to full, but not all.

Yeah, the bastard sword is worse than the claymore, but being worse than one of the best weapons in the game isn't the knock you think it is. This weapon is incredibly fun and stylish in both pve and pvp. Using a worse option just because you like it is the most chad **** imaginable. Bastard sword forever.

this bad boi nerfs half of your pve playthrough into a child's game. almost guaranteed poise/shield break against larger enemies and the raw version is op af while allowing you to wield additional int or fth based weapon. never understood the appeal of the broadsword when this thing exists. very beautiful very powerful.

Very interesting weapon conceptually, as it has the lowest stat requirements for a Hyper Armor weapon aside from the Storm Ruler. Drop two points into strength on a Caster Deprived, infuse with whatever element you prefer and you could have a kinda unique build. Everyone expects casters to stick to small, light swords and daggers and such in melee.

This sword definetely makes your first run PvE (less so for DLC) easier.
Low stat requirements, stomp breaks humanoid enemies (serial launches, the duck/dodge, poise and DR) and the stamina consumption is pretty low (lots of mileage with 25 endurance).
Moveset is decent- 1hd heavy is an overhead, so you can manage tight corridors, and 1hd light is a side to side.

Omg this weapon sucks ass, why tf did From create it in the first place? I've been using it for quite sometime already and not a single win against other people. Just finished a pyro/melee playthrough using this weapon, and yeah it's pretty great. My strategy is to infuse with heavy gem, and use with a medium shield, like the Black Knight shield, that allows using the WA attack. Most times you don't even need to 2-hand to stunlock enemies and the weapon art absolutely slaps, with enough stamina you can easily guard break blocking enemies and follow up with a critical hit. Lack of a thrust/stab attack isn't really a big deal if you bring along some pyromancies for those medium-range encounters.

The claymore's brother, very small difference is damage, dps difference is negligible in pvp and only occurs when two handing. The choice is actually moveset and WA, want to guard break and tank charge with a huge hit? claymore, want a ranged thrust? claymore, want to punish big weapons with a hardhitting attack? bastard sword, want to use a hard hitting slash? bastard sword.
The reason the claymore is everywhere with a weird lack of bastard sword despite the same dps...
is that chase the bro likes the claymore's moveset and finds its WA to be better and because he is a big youtuber its everywhere.

Stomp makes it surprisingly useful in pvp (mostly low-sl) and can catch a target off guard if they mistake if for a claymore. Unfortunately it's short, has imo the most limited greatsword moveset, and is comparable in damage to a millwood axe, one of the best STR backup weapons, on a strength run. Claymore gang baby

Powerful PvE weapon in the early portion of your NG playthrough. Consider infusing with a deep or fire gem for that purpose. You'll coast through much of the first-third of the playthrough, without twinking. Preferable to the claymore for PvE because the Stomp weapon-art is more useful against mobs.

in low sl 15 - 18 this weapon is perfect for a tank since you can literally invest 1 point on strenght (deprived) every other point on vigor, infuse it with raw, buff it, wear alva's armor and look how r1 spammers won't try to trade hits with you. (not even need to twink m8)

Manlier that Claymore because you don't have to put so much points into DEX. And it sends your enemies flying. Hella fun in pvp against large weapon wielding opponents.

This page doesnt say it, but this greatsword s weapon art sends enemies flying upwards. I wish we could hit enemies in mid-air with this weapon like gundyr did with his kick...

I'm wanting to do a miniture cosplay of the soul of cinder, and I was thinking that this thing chaos infused would be great, thinking the firelink greatsword scaled with Faith and Int, but it doesn't. Anyone reckon I should make it chaos or should I go refined with carthus flame thingy.... the one that buffs it with fire dmg

Just for fun I'm making a Jon Snow cosplay character. Jon's sword, Longclaw is a bastard sword. So I'll be using this weapon for the cosplay but what I'm curious about is what kind of infusion or buff do you guys think would better apply. Because Starks are from Winterfell and he is the King of the North. I'm thinking Refined Infusion, Frozen Weapon and Snap Freeze for some extra pizzazz.

On the max table it says this thing gets a scaling in str at +10, but on the heavy upgrade table it says b. which is it?

In games I usually get too close to my enemies easily...despite trying to get a distance advantage on them. So, shorter weapons like this one suits me perfectly. I have a weird talent for getting close to opponents in all games by accident, so I may as well capitalize on it.

The bastard sword and claymore always gave the same ar, no matter how you infuse/buff it. Because of this, if you have the levels to spare for 13 dex, the claymore is (in my opinion) a direct upgrade from the bastard sword. Longer range and a wa that has a great guard break with the r1 and a great wake up move with the r2. The only time i find the bastard sword's wa useful is when fighting the ringed knight scrub swords. Other than that using the stomp wa is basically like asking your opponent to bs you. So in conclusion, the claymore is overall better but the bastard sword is still a great alternative to very low dex builds.

This sword is really good sword with less range than the claymore but faster and requires lower stat requirements and both the bastard sword and the claymore do the same damage.

My stats: 16str/10dex and 40int/40fth.
This sword requires less dex than the Onyx blade and Claymore.
This sword has less range than the Onyx blade and Claymore, yet features identical AR to the Claymore at 147+26 phys and 154+255 for [583 AR] or [600 AR] twohanded.
It's worth a look if you lack the dex for Claymore, which also happens to require 16str, but you can't make the 13 dex requirement. You could go 14str 12dex and get the Onyx, which has 526 AR, though Onyx has that fire buff, I honestly don't know what is better, that's for you to decide!

"Bastard" because this weapon is supposed to be between one handed and two handed swords. Between Longsword and Greatswords. Able to use it fitting the situation. Not because some guy came into this world before his/her parents were able to marry one another and then invented this weapon...
This looks like an English long sword, the long sword in the game is an arming sword, and the sword that most closely resembles a real bastard sword in its proportions is the Irithyl straight sword. Nice work, Fromsoft.

The Knight class can just barely wield this sword and the knight shield without being overburdened with starting vitality. 69.6%.

Inferior to the Milwood battle axe in terms of heavy infusion for a pure str build but the WA can tip the scale in its favor in some instances

The weapon art is so good. I love using stomp for the damage reduction when I think i can't dodge a hit, but most of all I love baiting people with it. They think the stomp part of the WA is done and they immediately think they can punish my ass... BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!

Someone should add item ID's here, e.g. Normal un-upgraded bastard sword = 005B8D80, then it should have the item ID's for each respective reinforcement level and infusion.

This weapon and the Claymore are the best greatswords IMO. An even better greatsword would have the Stomp WA of the Bastard Sword while also having the thrusting strong attacks of the Claymore. but that would make them obsolete. Shame not many people use this because it and the Claymore feel basic. Same goes for the Light Crossbow.

Bastard Sword's move set is pretty fun, good damage. After using Demon's Fists a bunch, the range is a-okay with me. Was using the Heavy Infusion until i got my stats to scale better with Dark/Chaos. On my Pyromancer this thing is a freaking blast (sword also looks reeaal dope with the sheath on your back). Very low Dex requirement was also a selling point to me, don't like wasting levels in stats i wont further invest in. PVP-wise, the move set is a lotta fun. Sword art always gets people, along with charging the two handed R2 (the delay kills folks). Switching between the 1H & 2H move set is generally how i get more skilled players. Main tip for this weapon is to keep the pressure on!

so i did some testing out off curiosity. i went and did some pvp with the zweihander. which has the upwards strike that makes them go flying for its weapon art. NO ONE tried to parry it, they avoided it like a normal human. then i went in with the bastard sword..... EVERY TIME I DID THE WEAPON ART MY OPPONENT KEPT TRYING TO PARRY THE WEAPON ART. do they think that because the weapon is smaller that they can parry it? aaahhh the community.......
mediocre damage, mediocre moveset, terrible range. There is not a single reason why anyone should use this weapon, unless they are doing a challange run or something.

I agree, the bastard sword is incredibly underrated. It absolutely destroys in PvE and PvP, and is fast and costs no stamina, you can get a hit in, combo, and roll away without losing much stamina at all

With a name like "Bastard Sword" come on! The only thing I don't like is the reach which is why I go with claymore over it but this one will always be a close second as far as GS goes

This and the Claymore are, in my opinion, the best greatswords. Simple, historic syles. They have the same damage but slightly different movesets, making them ideal for different situations. This guy has the fun throw-yo-ass-in-the-air stomp special, while the Claymore has the standard shield break and heavy hit like many straight swords. Only thing the Bastard Sword lacks is a stab, but then the Claymore would be obsolete. They both stay close at my side in pve and pvp situations alike.
Best IMO. Stat-wise, the brother of the Claymore, but the slightly faster moveset and the Skill R2 makes me wonder why this weapon is not used as much as the Claymore.

This is my first upgraded weapon on my 2H STR character. I also considered the claymore. You can get both early. I chose this because its 2H moveset is essentially identical to the claymore, but is faster and I wanted to stick with 10 dex. The weapon skill is also arguably better and it's a bit lighter.

why no love for this weapon. It is VERY good in PVE due to the heaviness of strikes that are not that slow and cost much less stamina... Also ***** good in pvp for the same reasons.
Stomp could be great, but it remains to be seen if the b-sword keeps the low stamina cost of prior versions.
I don't get this whole worse than claymore thing, This weapon is completely different from claymore, claymore is a GS with a movement set suitable for single target and stance WA but bastard sword is more focused on sweeping moves suitable for crowd control and fast aggressive enemies and stomp WA is simply better (bastard sword is least investment stomp WA but stance is present on many others with less investment, albeit that's more of a problem for builds other than pure melee)
