Black Knight Greatsword is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

Ultra greatsword wielded by the Black Knights who wander the lands. Designed to face chaos demons.

The Black Knights constantly faced foes larger than themselves, and this sword's unique attack greatly reduces enemy poise.

Skill: Stomp
Use one's weight to lunge forward with a low stance and increased poise, and follow with a strong attack for a spinning slash.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Buffed or Infused.
  • Reinforced with Twinkling Titanite.
  • Deals 20% bonus damage vs. Demons. This includes the following:
  • At 40/40 Str/Dex this weapon has 612 AR and becomes stronger than the Greatsword by 11 points on top of being lighter and having an arguably better moveset.
  • The 2H R2 deal more poise damage than any other weapon in this class. This applies to the other Black Knight weapons as well.
  • It is possible to stun-lock player for a R1 into fully charged R2 when two handing the Black Knight Greatsword. This can be done by quickly unlocking after the initial R1 (or starting unlocked) then rotating the character so that your back is to the enemy while starting to charge the R2, it is important to make sure that the weapon contacts the enemy when it first touches the ground with a visible stagger animation or the combo will not work, as soon as the enemy is staggered immediately lock on and rotate the character back to facing the enemy as the R2 finishes. This combo is extremely difficult to pull off and it is recommended that you practice before trying it out in pvp.
This has been patched; the stagger on the backswing of the 2HR2 has been shortened and players can now roll out of it. With correct roll prediction and timing it can still connect if you end the 2HR2 where the opponent ends their roll provided they are still in range.

Black Knight Greatsword used to be the scariest thing to fight in Dark Souls 3 once upon a time. When they removed the R1-R2 True combo, it lost a lot of its identity. The nerf was justified as built correctly it could one shot for just landing 1 R1 in the correct position. Its still incredibly strong to this day and you can do some nice mix-ups if you attempt the heavy attacks. Overall, they've always done the Black Knight Weapons beautifully in this series.

first ds3 playthrough ever, i farmed the first BK i met in farron. managed to get his sword in probably 30 mins. beat nameless king, and SoC with it and now steam rolling m way through ariandel. looking forward to the ringed city. really wish these BK weapons were in ER along with a few others... damn.

        • Anonymous

This thing is fugging awesome, I loved it the moment I got the black knight on the edge of farron keep to drop it.
Fantastic moveset, Fantastic damage, looks cool, is weilded by a cool enemy. What's not to love?

          • Anonymous

Is the drop rate super low or am I really unlucky because I have been farming outside the gundyr arena for like 20 mins and still no drop, in ds1 it only took like maybe 4 runs through the kiln of the first flame to get it to drop

            • Anonymous

Played dark souls 1 and got it from a black knight and it was love.
Started ds2 and people told me it's not good but I didn't give s*** because it's my beloved BKUGS. And now I'm in ds3 and after 6 hours of farming I am reunited with my best friend!

THE FOKKIN BKUGS aka the puss destroyer, if i could have any weapon from the game in real life it would be this BEAST

                • Anonymous

A weapon fit to kill gods with. Like literally. This **** is massive and hits like a full speed freight train. Also makes a lot more since killing huge (in size) bosses like Midir and Nameless King instead of killing them with a tiny straight sword lol

                  • Anonymous

I hate how good this is. You can get it really early, you can +5 it before even fighting yhorm or aldrich, it does a ton of damage and has a great moveset, it's not that heavy for a UGS either. Every playthrough I end up using this, nothing else does as much damage so early in the game except maybe smaugh's hammer. Fume would have been maybe better if it wasn't nerfed into unviability.

                    • Anonymous

                      So...

Vertical UGS are hard to space out and punish, because they seem to have slightly more range in 2h mode, plus their R1 slam stuns nearby players.

However, vertical UGS are very prone to backstabs, because your weapon only covers narrow area.

The Black Knight Greatsword comes with solution - unique R2. Not only backstab fisher needs to dodge first backslam of R2, but also try to predict if R2 partially charged or fully, and roll accordingly in a split second moment. Unless they wanna get rollcaught or sent to space.

Very good weapon, as all black knight weapons are. I'd dare to say that it's by far the most comfortable UGS in it's class against faster smaller weapons.

I haven't played the game in years because I basically finished so I decided to play it again, trying to get this sword brings back the memories of how hard it is

                        • Anonymous

What get chosen from older games to get into the newer ones is generally the "most memorable" ones. Sometimes it means the most stylish, the most unique, or the strongest. Black-knight weapons in DS1 were definitively on the "strongest" type of memorable. They could carry you from 1st area (undead burg) till last dlc boss (manus) if you were lucky enough to drop them from the non-respawnable black knights that serves as kinda of mini bosses in DS1. Justified by the plot as being the weapons used by Gwyn knights to fight enemies much bigger than themselves, those weapons deal more damage, break guard more easily and stun more easily than anything on the same weight class. They also do bonus damage against all demons for plot reasons. In DS3, all of this is still true, except that the drop rate is much smaller, but the black knights are respawnable. It still do more damage, break guard more easily and stun more easily than anything on the same class, and still enjoy bonus damage against demons. It can't be acquired as early as in ds1 (needs to go to road of sacrifices), but still can carry you till the end of the game. It's a fantastic weapon against friede, soul of cinder and judicator boss.

R1->R2 may not work but it's pretty easy to bait an invader, pretend like you don't know they're behind you, and when they go for the backstab, hold R2, hit them with the backswing, turn the camera and send them to neptune

                            • Anonymous

                              1. Host of embers thinks he can get a hit in time to interrupt my charged r2 with this weapon.

                              2. The r2 connects.

                              3. "host of embers was not an impostor".

The 2HR2 deflects off the entire carpet in the dancer arena, just letting it be known so you guys don't die as embarrassingly as I did a few minutes ago

So, yes, I'm here to rant, but not for the reason you may think.

See, I got bored with other games in my catalogue and thought to myself, "Hey! Steam is doing their annual summer sale! DS3 should be alive and kicking, let's do that!" So, I started playing again after a long, long break.

Now, let me briefly establish my bona fides: Prior to the break, I'd beaten through multiple courses of NG+ (I'm on NG+6, I think?) and every game before that. When that got old, I spent most of my time up at Pontiffs chilling with fight club bros, which is to say that I'm no slouch in PvP, I admit I'm not the best, and I'm not a poor sport about losing. Losing is just an opportunity to get better.

To the point, then, where I've just been reminded (by sad, hard experience) that:

1.) From Software nerfed the GK UGS 2H*R1+R2 (charged) wombo combo. Apparently, the back swing was nerfed so that kids can roll out of it now, and the weapon no longer true combos. I *CAN* complete combo with it, but I suspect that I'm catching summer sale kids rather than it being anything I'm doing.

2.) From Software gifted the world weapons like the RKPGS sword, or the Splitleaf Greatsword, for the dead easy L2 into wham bamb thank you mamm combo.

Yes, yes, I realize there are ways to counter these weapons. TO BE CLEAR: I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE WHO USE THESE WEAPONS. I regularly make RPKGS users my *****, so that's not the problem.

                                  The problem is this:

Why, by all the gods, WHY did From Software nerf the GKGS wombo combo, which arguably requires skill and weapon mastery to execute properly, but they go and leave (or create anew) weapons like these and a few other stun-locking-meme tier weapons unmolested?

                                  tl;dr

Why does From Software hate UGS users so much?

A couple of comments mentioning 2h R1 + jumping attack is a true combo. My favourite but not a true combo is R1 + R1 + Jumping attack. The amount of duels I’ve ended due to people naturally rolling backwards once hit by the first two R1’s only to get caught by the massive vertical jump range. (I found this out by someone doing it to me with Astora great sword and practised ever since)

                                    • Anonymous

Does anyone have a poise value for the weapon art? It's definitely lower than others in it's class but knowing the number it adds would be helpful for certain breakpoints.

I guess the only way to buff it using miracles (sacred oath and deep protection) and pyromancy power within still a beast <3

Stop using this garbage weapon right this instant you can’t hit anything and you will just get killed like the casuls out are. Pick up the pkcs and git Gud .

Does the 2h r1 not combo into itself for this weapon? I've had 3 people roll out of it already thinking I've gone crazy. Asking for a friend.

Anyone willing to donate one? Been farming for hours with no luck. I know there is items to help I’ve just been through this before. I was on nameless and my account was lost..

                                                  pros:

                                                  classy weapon, refined model art

640 AR, 2h, 40/40, very good ar before any buffs

cant be buffed and infused so dont have to worry about resins

                                                  both vertical and orizontal swings

                                                  cons:

                                                  cant be buffed or infused

both r2s look great but are situational. Both gugs and fugs r2s are better

lowest poise health on stomp compared to any other ugs (this will matter if you are hit twice in stomp with a great hammer)

                                                  others:

All in all a great weapon, Looks good, does nice damage. There are better options out there, for example gugs with 66/10 heavy will do 676 AR before any buffs. The weapon is good enough to carry the ashen one in NG +7 (used it myself with a 40/40 build) so if you like it, farm it and use it, you wont regret it one bit.

                                                  Cheers.

Dexfags: NOOOO you can't use ultras poise weapons have no skill!!! Black knights: haha health bars go brrrrr

                                                    • Anonymous

The article doesn't really tells this, but if you land R2's backswing on enemy player, it will stun him long enough to get hit by following uppercut. Yes, it doesn't work in a combo any longer, but it will work if you only do R2, without landing R1 prior to it. It is great thing to do when you are being chased. Kite them and when someone gets close hit them with backswing and launch them into space. I have 29 poise and backswing move has enough poise to hyperarmor through straight sword or any other onehanded light weapon attack. Black Knight Greatsword is truly... great. Unlike many other UGS it has a really diverse and useful moveset which can catch a lot of people off guard. I strongly suggest you to pair this big boy with something small and fast attacking, like Corvian Greatknife in offhand. Lets you catch those pesky rolling dudes when offhand or twohand it when putting pressure at low HP phantom. Either way, it's an amazing weapon.

                                                      • Anonymous

You can also start the windup on the basic attack two handed while looking away and it will follow through behind you. Making this plus cats ring one of the best ways to **** with both invaders and host

                                                        • Anonymous

The ultimate kite sword because of the overhead. 1v1 against another GS this wins 9 out of ten because of massive range and a small aoe that will stagger.

Trashy weapon for clueless noobs... 40/40 STR/DEX is too much of an investment and the worst part is that you scrubs still gonna be owned by skilled players who only need around 40DEX.

This thing has utterly disgusting phantom range that a friend and me discovered, rolling back from the forward slam still leaves you with a good chance of being hit by the massive hitbox on it, which is a good foot longer than the weapon, I used to destroy him with a flamberge but now with this and iron flesh I can barely beat him anymore

                                                              • Anonymous

Am I missing something? The attack power on this thing with 40 Dex and 40 strength is weaker than my great sword. A +5.... Be sure to note that black night sword and black night GREAT sword are two different things.

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Weapons with heavy and dark infusions dominate this game so much that a quality weapon needs to have a very usefull ability if it wants to be a competitor. BK Sword or the Paired RKGS are 2 of these.

                                                                      • Anonymous

"At 40/40 Str/Dex this weapon has 612 AR and becomes stronger than the Greatsword by 11 points on top of being lighter and having an arguably better moveset." It's worth noting that at 40 Str only on a Heavy Greatsword, the AR is just slightly higher (615 if I recall), so you ultimately get similar damage with lower stat requirements, plus greater range. The BKGS is indeed lighter, but that can be offset by funneling some points from Dex into Vit. In the end, the BKGS really just stands on its unique moveset and bonus damage against Demons.

                                                                        • Anonymous

what is the drop rate on this thing? i was farming for at least 45 minutes at untended graves with 157 item discovery and got 0.

                                                                          • Anonymous

With 40/40 str/ dex on level 100 this Beast almost oneshot every phantom with the combo R1 and Jump atack, and the poise uuf<3

                                                                            • I'll be honest, everybody says, "This weapons sucks" or "this weapon is just mediocre" but I used it on a SL 200 character with around 90 STR and ~60 DEX and it devastates health bars while simultaneously deleting what broken remnants of poise are left on players hit by it. if you don't have the patience to lvl this weapon and your stats with it, but you have enough time to whine about how bad it is, just don't use it then and pretend it doesn't exist. Point is just stop complaining and use it right, and if you can't, don't use it.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Weak. Just use the Lothric Knight Greatsword. It has Lightning Damage and can still be Infused AND buffed. I really see no reason to use this other than the better fashion and better moveset.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Role playing as a black knight while in full bk armour, the shield in one hand and the greatsword in the other has been the most fun playthrough I have ever done. I recommend it to everyone.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I feel this weapon is more for new players who don't know what they want to do yet, seeing the damage before reforging it is high so of course what do new players do? they use the strongest weapon they can find but it would require them to grind those souls and level up a lot to be able to use this weapon. It's kinda a gateway between casual new player and becoming a pro player if you think about it... as long as the player has some sort of armor set that absorbs decent damage and a good shield all together to be less than 70% so they're not fat rolling everywhere

                                                                                        • Anonymous

I've never really used this weapon. On a str build ive ignored it due to its 18 dex req, on a dex build ive ignored it because the astora gs exists, and i've never really run a quality build as they just seem boring. Is this worth giving a shot?

If anyone has a spare of anything else I need, a fellow souls veteran would be grateful. Psn Necrotizing_Death. Thanks mates. Happy hunting.

Really, this weapon is one of the best. High damage, nice moveset and you can get it quite early in game, if you know what you're doing.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

So, I haven't played this in over a year, but was a big fan of the 3-hit R1+chargedR2 wombo combo; however, they don't seem to connect as reliably as they used to do (as far as I'm able to, at least). I can land it just fine against mobs, but in PVP it doesn't seem to take, dude roll out just as the third and final hit is coming out, breaking stunlock. Was something changed in the last year or so? Any tips for pulling this off cleanly?

Profaned, however, can self-buff with charged strong attacks (that attack only) or WA (several seconds) for +80 fire damage, whereas BKGS has +850 AR vs demons. Both are surpassed by a refined Greatsword at 721 AR and a sharp Lothric Knight GS at 597+174 AR. BKGS still has arguably the better moveset, despite being the 4th strongest.
