Buckler is a Shield in Dark Souls 3.

A very small round metal shield.
It features a large central protrusion designed for parrying attacks.


Skill:  Parry
Repel an attack at the right time to follow up with a critical hit. Works while equipped in either hand.

Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • On the lighter side for a parrying shield, but the stability and absorption values are the lowest of the lot.
  • The earliest parry small shield available for non-Assassins.
  • NOT recommended for blocking, due to low block rates, and poor stability.
  • This shield has a unique parry animation, same as the Target Shield and Small Leather Shield.
  • Consumes the least amount of stamina for parries of all three parry small shields.
  • Has 10 parry frames, starting at frame 9 as seen below (parry small shield).

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

      The stability (stamina drain when blocking) is wrong when non-infused, 43 is only the value for a +10 version, decreasing a point for every upgrade level below that (i.e. a +6 buckler has a value of 39, 4 levels below the +10)

        Someone has made an update in a comment. Hell yeah! Katanas are not that terrible, they are better than some standard Shields. I used to parry with a buckler, then I made a character with lothric knight shield and it was way more difficult to parry but i got the timing finally. I thought katanas were even more difficult as a tool for parry, but that's actually easier!

            Katanas definitely have more parry frames than stated here. I tested it with the Chaos Blade on the Black Knight with the Greataxe right after the Champion Gundyr bonfire. I recorded as I was playing, parrying him over and over. Now as we all should know, the parry frames start when your stamina bar goes down, and counting the frames afterwards revealed that I got successful parries more than 4 frames after.
            e.g. taking the stamina loss frame as frame 1, then the frame where the parry sparks came was on frame 6.
            Another time it was on frame 9.
            If you take the frame that fp is consumed as frame 1, then the frame stamina is lost (thus the parry frames starting) is on frame 9, exactly the same as fist weapons.
            In this case, my previous tests landed successful parries on frames 14 and 17 respectively. Thus it seems to me like they share their frame data with fist weapons, the only uncertainty is that they might end 1 frame earlier or a couple of frames later.

              Hol' up, is this a small shield or a parry shield? I'm confused. It's in the small shield section but it in Notes & Tips it says something about it being a parry shield...

                where did the information "The earliest parrying shield available for non-Assassins" come from? the knight, warrior, thief, sorcerer, pyro, and (of course) the assassin all have parrying shields. 60% of the classes start with parrying shields...

                  One of the worst kind of people is those who parry spams with the buckler, and after countless failed tries, they get a parry, one-shots you with hornet ring + dagger and then gives you a point down as if they thought they were good...

                    There's a brief moment where you seem to block with the shield before doing a flourish, is that just a block or is that part of the parry animation? When I parry, I always seem to hit a weapon on the blocking part of the animation and it never initiates a parry. Do I need to time it where my character does the flourish after that quarter-second block, or am I just getting unlucky?
