Cathedral Knight Greatsword is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



Ultra greatsword wielded by the knights of the Cathedral of the Deep.

Highly destructive if intolerably heavy.

Its blade is flattened for use as a strike weapon, but the point at the end allows for thrusting.



Notes and Tips

  • Can be Buffed and Infused.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • Notably deals Strike damage with most attacks.
  • Deals Thrust damage with it's two-handed R2.
  • Its rolling attack is a spin, having notable area coverage around the player.
  • While two handed, a true combo for this weapon is R1 to R2



Location / Where to Find

  • Dropped by greatsword-wielding Cathedral Knights found in either the Cathedral of the Deep or the Consumed King's Garden
  • For easy farming: Start at the Deacons of the Deep bonfire. Head back out of the boss room and up the stairs. On the other side of the large throne there is a knight wielding this weapon.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit

        Each day I awake, I spend roughly 4 minutes in prayer. Both to this weapon, and so that none may discover the evil it is capable of. I rise from my bed, drink my coffee, brush my teeth. People ask me why I am so nervous? I reply “you wouldn’t understand” I work my 8 hours, I go home, I hope on dark souls 3, immediately going for pontiff. I Don my cathedral armor and sword, keeping a thought in the back of my head, a thought of hope. A hope that no man other than I uses this abomination. I play 4 hours and not once is the sexy hunk of metal that is the cathedral greatsword seen. A relief washes over me like a baptism. I brush my teeth again, and go to sleep, at peace for another 8 hours.

          The damage is not as good as the Lothric knight greatsword or Greatsword. However, arguably two most useful physical damage types strike and thrust and horizontal two handed R1, poke R2 and rolling R1 being a sweep makes this weapon a very versatile weapon for STR build. Also, it is relatively lighter.

                True Story

                So I fought someone with this thing, they were a pretty methodical fighter, using sorceries and ****

                So he casts crystal homing soulmass, it hits me and he thought I got staggered, he starts swinging at me with his fire lothric knight straight sword

                Emphasis on the word "thought", I actually used the stomp skill and ended up ****ing oneshotting him with the weapon art.

                  Despite it not being the highest damage UGS, it does have the benefit of being able to do both Thrust and Strike damage, something most weapons don’t have.

                  • I keep seeing people use this and they are consistently bad at the game. Same goes for meta. Conclusion? Use it all you want just don't let the power of the weapon make you lean on it as a crutch. Make sure that you are good without it so you don't get caught by someone using the Aquamarine dagger just because they are better at the game than you.

                      Definitely the weapon favored by retards who think ultras are op. Of course they get a reality check when they skull****ed so hard that they rage quit the game and uninstall it for the good of the world. Don’t be those idiots, pick up the pkcs and play the game the right way.

                      • This weapon has an R1 R2 true combo, and you can do another R1 immediately after to do a pretty consistent rollcatch. This combo can kill a phantom easily, but it takes a lot of stamina. This weapon is everything the FUGS was meant to be, except for its weak rolling attack and truly, truly horrible weapon art. 15 units also puts it on the lighter side of the UGS, especially the Strike ones.

                            Little advice for farming the Cathedral Knight Greatsword:

                            If you can, use the Consumed King’s Garden bonfire “Oceiros the Consumed King” for farming. Not only are there two knights wilding it, I’m dead certain their drop rate is much higher. I farmed multiple CKGs at both locations and the Cathedral Knight at Cathedral of the Deep seems to have his drop rate reduced, especially compared to his fellow with shield and mace. No proof, just my conclusion after hitting those two knights over and over again for what felt like an eternity, but it gets somewhat obvious when only one of two almost always drops an item.
                            When I compare my experiences with Consumed King’s Garden with Cathedral of the Deep, I would say, farming for CKG in Consumed King’s Garden feels almost enjoyable.
                            Good luck and a rich harvest to all fellow farmers.

                              Pros:

                              1. Good looks! And it s a general rule in gaming, you look good, you play good!

                              2. Strike and Thrust damage available so it s a very versatile weapon

                              3. 2hr1 - 2hr2 is a combo that will hit like a truck. when using this combo beware though that second 2hr2 will not get leo ring bonus because it s not a counter.

                              4. Can be buffed and infused and works well with most infusions, chaos and dark included.

                              5. Vertical UGS while 2h are faster than horizontal ones and also pops Hyper armor faster so a good moveset and a fast way to reset the poise health with stomp WA.

                              Cons:

                              1. average damage for its class and weight, heavy infusion 66 str has 617 AR while a great club has 641 AR with less weight, higher poise health, higher poise damage and same good moveset
                              (617 AR being pure strike or thrust in 2hr2 is better than it looks though, still falls behind other UGS)

                              2. short range for a UGS

                              3. WA is situational and good most of the time just for poise health reset

                              Others:
                              This UGS is a classy weapon and can be deadlly in good hands using 2hr2 thrust leo ring or 2hr1, 2hr2 combo. It s also a good option for battle mages cause it s weight and requierments are low enough to use it with infusions. It falls behind for min maxing cause it s weight/damage ratio is not ideal also the range is kinda small so other vertical UGS will have the range and damage advantage like FUGS or Greatsword UGS.

                              For PVE is good enough to carry the ashen one in ng 7 with either phisical or elemental infusions. For PVP it takes more skill to use than other UGS or GS but the combo potential is rewarding in his own way. Defo an interesting weapon to have around. Also it can take some farming to get it. Enjoy the cathedral knight UGS!

                                    The description says that the blade is flattened and that's why this weapon inflicts strike damage. But if one looks closely at the actual model, the blade appears normal sharpened, like other swords. At the same time, the blade from Dragonslayer's Greataxe is notably flattened but it inflicts standard damage. I know this fact is practically without value but STILL! From Software wtf the fukc!

                                        it's funny seeing ppl that just compare weapons for their AR being that AR difference minimal.

                                        This weapon is a strike weapon, yeah, a hammer sword shaped, that means that usually hits harder than you expect due that a lot of enemies are weak to strike damage and in pvp will surpass other weapons cause in pvp there are just 2 type of ppl, the ones that go nude meaning that anything they touch them will destroy them or ppl that wear armor that usually strike resistance are poor.

                                        Another point is the combination of the moveset of the greatsword with the incredibly LKGS 2 handed R2.

                                        well, in other words, if you want a hammer but dont like the moveset of the hammer and want to have an OP R2 this is your weapon.

                                              Are the cathedral knights who wield this parryable? I have no online acces and play strictly PvE. I know most greatsword two handed attacks are not parryable and their whole moveset is two handed. I thought I would ask the experts : )

                                                In my sl31 str28 +4 build it has 366ar 2h, 31 more than zwei and only 9 less than guts sword, but guts is usually dealing less damage because it is standart not strike and also weights 5 more. It doesn't require upgrading dex like bkgs or lkgs. It also has awesome r1r2 combo, which can sometimes oneshot phantoms. And the moveset is crème de la crème of all ultras, vertical and horizontal attacks and powerful poke. So If you feel that cathedral needs to be protected from gankers, this is a weapon you're looking for.

                                                  I couldn’t resist choosing this as my second UGS for my strength build. Even though it has a weaker AR than the Greatsword it goes so well with the Zweihander when changing between each as the Zwei is standard/thrust damage and this is strike/thrust and the Zwei 1 handed heavy is a poke and two handed is a slam whereas this has a 1 handed slam and 2 handed poke for mixing things up. It’s like they were meant to compliment each other on a build.

                                                      Does much better than the AR would have you believe. Lighter and more stabby than the great mace, and still does strike damage. I personally like to use both interchangeably because the combos will shred face in pvp

                                                      • Can also be farmed from the Bonfire after the Consumed King is defeated. There's 2 of them, nothing else in your way and you get to approach them from behind. I had to farm one for Dragonslayer Armor fight. Great Moveset, works well on nearly all Heavy Armor excluding Exile Armor.

                                                          Farming it from the Deacons bonfire is really easy if you have some item discovery. With the base item discovery of Warrior it took me 20 attempts until i used a Rusted Coin, then I found it at the first attempt.

                                                            Making a Knight Slayer build with Str and End being the main focus. So far it's going well, just a little worried about end game and dlc due to lower AR.

                                                              It should be noted that this weapon with 60str, a +10 heavy infuse 2 handed has 600 AR, compared to a Zweihander's 586 with the same stat spread, but with 5 more weight. The difference here is that the CKGS deals strike damage, which varies from on average %6 - %11 more damage in pvp due to absorption. With 15 faith applying Blessed Weapon that makes the total raw damage 645 for the CKGS and 630 AR for the Zwei. On paper, not worth the 5 extra weight... The difference aside the vastly different but still good moveset is that extra ~8% more damage dealt in pvp due to the strike damage type over the standard damage of the zwei, where the zwei would deal the same damage in a 1:1 comparison as the CKGS if you had an extra ~70 AR. This IMO does make up for the fact the Cathedral Knight GS has 5 more weight, where that extra ~7 vit basically contributes to ~70 more psuedo AR. With any other infusions (dark, refined, lightning, sharp, etc...) I would recommend using other Great Swords as it doesn't scale as well outside heavy. It should be treated as a long range axe with a GS moveset. Zwei still wins in terms of style points, but supposedly there are some very interesting true combo's that can be pulled off that other GS cannot do (such as 2h R1 + R2) due to the strike damage changing the recovery times on players. It may be possible to pull off 2h R1 into weapon swaps or jumping R2's as well for other combos that would further boost the CKGS actual damage output. Would recommend in any SL bracket from 60+6 to125+10 for science. [Apologies for comments removing paragraph breaks, -MwH]

                                                                    this greatsword is anti backstab whenever some dex fag trying to backstab ya he can't get to backstab you! those dex fag will soam roll around you just to get backstab so careful do not attack them unbtil they done with rolling spams. and when he start using that light attack put a good use on that opportunity to stunlock him annd use the light + thrust attack and there you go you can destoroy those dex fags

                                                                      Weapon has some peculiar mechanisms at play, notabley deals strike damage for all if it's moveset except the heavy thrust which deals... thrust damage. This is the least resisted physical damage type in PvE and on most armors equipe-able by players, giving the weapon notabley more consistent damage. 2-handed R1 true combos into an uncharged 2-handed R2. Doesn't really change much about the weapon. Still requires 4 hits for your average 40+ vigor pvp-er with decent armor. Aka, can still be accomplished with 2 R1+R1 combos. However, might change to a 3 hit kill if buffed, low leveled, poor armor, or poor vigor players. R2 benefits from Leo Ring, but not in a R1+R2 combo, as the R-1 gets the counter hit bonus. Other than this peculiarity, it's a pretty average ultra great sword. Great if you can bait players into a trade, but not top tier in 1v1's as any competent player can easily roll your 2 handed moveset and reaction parry your 1 handed moveset.

                                                                        After 50+ hours using this weapon, I came to the conclusion that this is the BEST physical weapon in the game under/around SL (Level) 100. Several points below: Damage: Medicore. Other UGS can out dps this sword, but only this and the Fume can deal Strike damage with its attacks. Moveset: Amazing. One-handed horizontal and Two-handed vertical attacks, plus Two-handed poke makes this weapon very adaptable and can easily punish any enemy attack, plus counter damage. Weapon Skill/Art: Medicore. Stomp never was the most effective WA, especially not the horizontal one but it is still great for countering attacks from combo weapons like the Farron UGS and Ringed Knight PUGS. Strike/Thrust damage combination: This weapon is effective against armored opponents. All knights and many bosses are weak to Strike damage, and those that are not are weak to Thrust damage, making this weapon effective all opponents. How to get this weapon: It is a damn grind. Farmable, but the drop rate is very low. Method: Kill Deacons of the Deep, then from that bonfire repedatly kill the Greatsword Cathedral Knight before the bossroom. Stats at weapon level +10 40 STR Heavy Infused Two-handed: 566 Attack Rating. Stats at weapon level +10 66 STR Heavy Infused Two-handed: 617 Attack Rating.

                                                                            I think all haters of this weapon seem to forget, most Armour is weaker against Strike/Thrust DMG....... sooo..... why hate when it can do more damage then other GS's? well..... lemme tell ya something. Infuse this bad boy of a sword with heavy. then get up top 6o STR( bare with me). Then get lightening blade or lightning resin and lightning clutch ring, and maybe if you want to be risky power within. 833 DMG, roughly. And special attack does over 1300, its pretty dank.

                                                                                  Heavy Infused versus the Greatsword, this deals notably less damage and should not be used in place of the Greatsword - Running Pure Strength build at 70 STR.

                                                                                  Also worth noting: (Last time I tried...) Running 30 STR / 15 DEX / 50 INT, Refined Infusement then cast Greater Magic Weapon, and this things 2H downfall becomes a death sentence.

But once i figgured out that the initial R1 true combos into an R2 it became much better then i initialy belived it to be.

                                                                                        TBH this weapon is probably the best UGS in terms of balance. It might be too heavy for pure INT/FTH builds and they are probably better off with the Astora GS or Zweihander, but hybrid STR builds with INT/FTH can use this really well. 1h moveset is risky because it can be parried but has wide coverage for normal attacks and an overhead smash for the strong attacks which have shockwave. 2H moveset is unparryable as per all UGS weapons, but both normal and strong attacks are overhead strikes with a lot of poise but narrow coverage. This is offset by giving the rolling attack a wide swing. Also Stomp is probably the best WA for the non-unique UGS weapons, and if the Astora GS had Stomp instead of charge, it would be the best UGS weapon. If only the followup attacks were faster though. I'd like to actually hit people with it more often. Maybe increase the FP cost?

Sure it has no fire in it but the look is almost identical much much more at least as the Profaned or Lorians GS and what people seem to forget is that the Great Lord GS itself hadn't any fire in DS1. If we used it it was just a normal GS.

                                                                                              This thing is now beastly with a blessed infusion with 37 strength, 36 dex and 40 faith(120 quality faith build). Blessed makes both the Physical and lightning damage scale A with faith. Currently getting +316 physical and +116 lightning scaling. I'm not sure what a strength build can do with heavy and 60+ strength, but if you want to compare yourself it's 185+316 phys and 113+116 lightning with my stats.
