Chaos Gem is an Upgrade Material in Dark Souls 3.

Chaos Gem

chaos gem

A gem of infused titanite. Relics of land scorched by the Chaos Flame.

Used in infusion to create chaos weapons.

Chaos weapons inflict fire damage, and scale with intelligence and faith.

Chaos Gem Usage

Chaos Gem Locations

  • On a corpse at the far end of the Smouldering Lake, near the left group of big crabs.
  • Crystal lizard at the start of Demon Ruins, down the hole in Smouldering Lake.  Drop down and go left around a corner. (Video)
  • Low chance drop from a Smoldering Ghru
  • Crystal lizard in the Grand Archives. From the bonfire follow the path forward until a dark room with 2 lizards that run up the movable stairs. It is the closest lizard to you, on the left.

Notes

  • Requires the Giant's Coal in order to start infusing weapons.
  • Weapon is no longer able to be buffed with resin or spells after infusion. (However, weapon can still be buffed with Warcry Skill.)
  • The scaling on weapons differs depending on the weapon infused. (A corvian greatknife gets E scaling at +0 for both, while a Notched whip gets D scaling)
  • It offers the exact same damage as the Dark Gem, the only difference being the damage type. This being the general rule with some exceptions like player vs player or the Murky Hand Scythe.

Also has a decent chance to drop from the demon just outside of old king’s antechamber. He also drops titanite shards just about every kill and 1080 souls with shield of want.

At what point does Chaos gem deal more dmg than Fire gem?
Like, what amount of INT/Faith do you need for it to surpass the raw base dmg of Fire gem infusion?
Right now, Ive got a Fire Longsword +7 and I'm sitting at 26/26 INT/Faith.... Not sure if its time to put the Chaos gem in right now or if it will decrease my dmg because my INT/Faith are not high enough to surpass the flat dmg of the Fire gem. Anybody knows?
Dont want to waste since you can only get 3 Chaos gems in one playthrough unless you get a lucky drop.

        • I've surrendered to the conclusion that ds3 gives you one Chaos Gem per Smoldering Cleric in Smouldering Lake and no more. Evidence:

          - (425 item discovery)

          - Got only one from farming Smoldering Cleric near Old King's Ante Chamber for 2 hours.

          - Got zero farming smoldering ghru's (non clerics) for two hours (did get two fire gems)

          - Left to go find other Smoldering Clerics in the map, killed 2 other ones in the room with the Smoldering Rotten Flesh, got 2 Choas Gems off them on first try.

          - Killed other solo Cleric down the hall from Demon Ruins bonfire few times no drop. checked my inventory and realized I have a total of 6 Chaos Gems. 1 found in the lake, one from crystal lizard, and 1 from each of the 4 clerics that exist on the map.

          - Havent seen anybody in the comments claim more than 4 choas gems as drops from Smouldering Lake

in general what's better? Dark or Chaos? Ik more enemies are weaker to dark but is the stagger/burning with fire damage valuable?

            • Anonymous

I just got a Chaos gem from the Demon in the Antechamber after farming that area for half an hour. 11 luck and 9+ Hollow Dark Sword. Huh, didn't expect that.

Should I do this on a curved sword or just use the demon’s scar for a weapon on my pyro boi? ( 50 int, 50faith)

yes you can use warcry on any elemmental infused weapon, but since it only buffs the physical damage is not as good as on a physical build

                  • This gem weakens Strength and Dex and adds Faith and Int scaling to the fire damage. You can still get normal damage scaling although it is generally weaker. This gem works great for pyromancers as it deals fire damage with scaling so its better than the fire gem but its still not the best for pvp, try a dark gem as its gives the same outcome but with Dark damage. Hope this helped some people.

Complete noob here. My question: Does chaos infusion simply add an INT/FTH scaling fire damage to the weapon (while the weapon retains its original stat scaling and physical damage), or does it overwrite the original scaling to add the damage?

I've literally tried killing the fire demons that allegedly 'drop' the Chaos Gem (like the one right outside of Old King's Antechamber) at least 100+ times now (not even joking) while wearing the gold serpent ring +3 AND symbol of avarice... not ONCE have I gotten the Chaos Gem. Anyone have any idea wtf is up with this bullsh*t??? I'm like desperate for this gem and I absolutely CANNOT get more than 3 without starting a new game -_-

for pvp dark gem is way better since people have less defense against it. Fire and lightning defense is so common

For a Pyromancer, Chaos and Dark infusions are very handy, and best, obviously if you just buff your weapon with Carthus Flame you will deal more damage, but using Chaos or Dark infusions come very handy, you don't need to use a slot for Carthus Flame Arc, you don't have to rebuff your weapon everytime, you don't spend time buffing your weapon(and specially in PvP and boss fights you may not have time to do buff), you don't need FP to buff your weapon.

Also many weapons have really good scaling with Chaos or Dark infusions(both infusions always have same scaling):
A/A scaling for Carthus Curved Greatsword, Astora Greatsword, Murakumo, Great Corvian Scythe, etc.
B/B scaling for Carthus Curved Sword, Zweihander, Dark Sword, Claymore, Gotthard Twinswords, Greatsword, Cathedral Knight Greatsword, Lothric Knight Greatsword, Exile Greatsword, Onikiri and Ubadachi, etc.

These are just some examples there is a lot more good weapon with A/A or B/B scaling, and a few "meta" weapons with C/C scaling. As a note, if you know any weapon that scales S with Lightning or Crystal, this means it will have A/A for Chaos or Dark, if it has A instead of S then it will be B/B, and etc.

this infusion is only good for build who both have hight int/faith but all those builds are crapp, having like only 60 faith and buffing your weapon is miles better

For a pyromancer build, is it better than the carthus flame weapon? Because of the scaling loss in str/dex maybe the spell is more usefull

Tested on Smouldering Ghru just outside Old King Antechamer. Wearing Symbol of Avarice, +1 Gold Serpent Ring and Crystal Rapier with both Rusted coins used. Got 2 out a total of 53 attempts.

if this is one of the better infusions. Like Dark it fits a magic/melee character, since it scales with all stats. Not being able to infuse your weapon is a bummer, but the damage seems to be pretty good.40/40 Int/Fth seems like a good idea, a long with balanced Str/Dex (depending on the weapon).

Will be great for a 30/30 int/faith build and pair that with pyromancies and some miracles and you will have a nice combo :D

does anyone know which weapons have a/a scaling with faith/int with this infusion other than the astora greatsword?

would anyone say that this gem is the new mundane infusion?mundane was the best scaling infusion me thinks because it had the best scaling for your lowest attribute.so if you were a deprived class that just takes everything statwise it was idealthis makes it so you can have a str/dex weapon scale with int/faith, yes?dark gem also does same thing... every other infuse either adds 1 more attribute for scale + something like FP or HP recovery, or just makes one or two attributes scale better... (if you are more specialized)
