Stance | - (15/15) |
Crystal Sage's Rapier is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.
Thrusting Sword with tiny crystals scattered across its blade, used by the Crystal Sages for self-defence.
The crystals boost the magic damage inflicted by the sword, and the item discovery of its wielder, fruit of the lifetime of research conducted by the sages.
Skill: Stance.
From stance, use normal attack to back step and execute a surprise attack, or a strong attack for consecutive thrusting.
Notes & Tips:
- Cannot be infused or buffed
- Upgraded with Titanite Scales.
- Increases Item Discovery by 50 while equipped in active slot (stat requirements are not needed). Two-handing a weapon in the other hand will not cancel the effect. Wielding two will provide 100 Item Discovery.
- Stacks with the Symbol of Avarice, Covetous Gold Serpent Ring, and either a Rusted Coin or a Rusted Gold Coin.
- Is the longest Thrusting Sword in the game.
- Can't be used to parry in off-hand weapon slot.
Scaling & Softcaps:
- 1 Handed Stats, STR/DEX/INT
- 13/18/7 = 271 AR = Base Stats & STR/DEX softcaps
- 40/18/7 = 284 AR
- 13/40/7 = 285 AR
- 40/40/7 = 298 AR
- 13/18/40 = 378 AR = INT softcap
- 13/18/60 = 394 AR = Caster Stats
- 40/40/40 = 404 AR
- After softcaps it gets less than 2 AR per level
- Pure INT weapon
- DEX & STR softcap right at base requirements
- INT scales well to 40

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

Actual garbage weapon, can't believe I wasted so many stats for this damage.
- Anonymous
It's the year 2024 and I am still desperately trying to make this weapon work as my main weapon
- Anonymous
Be cool if you could slash with it, like the an estoc, since it's what the Crystal Sages do.
This could be the only pure physical dmg INT weapon, with scaling like blessed infusions, hell maybe even make it buffable (some equivalent to the sunlight sword), ah well even in ER From poops on mages
- Anonymous
Is it just me, or does this thing have BIZARRELY high Dex requirement for what is obviously a caster weapon?
- Anonymous
It's such a pretty sword that it's a shame it doesn't have a unique WA/moveset
- Anonymous
I poked an undead settlement hollow with this, you'd do more damage with your fists, nice drop rates though
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Here's a little tip: put it in your left hand. You can still 2h or dodge or both, you'd have the increased item discovery without having to use this shitty weapon.
I never use a shield anyway
- Anonymous
I like how it looks and that it helps me farm stuff. If it were ALSO good damage it would be OP, at least in PvE
- Anonymous
Not a bad weapon for a mage, if you meet the hefty requirements. Decent damage, great reach, low weight, it even shuts down quickstep spamming invaders because of the speed and counterattack boost
- Anonymous
This is a great PvE weapon. Does respectable damage to mobs, has nice range and increases Item Discovery. Not so great in PvP, although it does add some range to a Int-based melee build when used in the off-hand.
Oh how much I wished this thing would've been viable.. I love the design of this weapon so hard. It's such a shame. The split damage makes it even worse.

I won a duel with this trash weapon at meta sl wheres my early release copy of elden ring
- Anonymous
it looks good for farm and i have 27str 11dex and 99 int should i upgrade it? Or double wield it?
- Anonymous
Another weapon with a great concept and absolute **** execution. What person decided that it should only get a D in dex when it’s a damn rapier?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
As of 2020 Crystal Sage's Rapier item discovery buff will only activate if the player has it equipped in an active slot and is shown wielding it in either hand. Putting the Crystal Sage's Rapier in an active slot but not wielding it will not increase your item discovery.
- Anonymous
CSR: what is my purpose? :Everyone: You Boost Item Discovery, :CSR:...oh my god
- Anonymous
I really wish I could have this equipped in an nonactive slot and still get the item discovery buff.
- Anonymous
Anyone got another one dpare, that woudltn mine losing for say one of the twin princes boss soul weapons, I asking to trade basically, I'd rather not farm in Ng+, because I got the spell, completely forgetting about item find bonus, like the idiot causal I am
- Anonymous
Fellow sorcerers, i'd recommend to give this weapon a try. It scales primarily with Intelligence (going from 18 Dex to 60 gives like 30 AR, not worth it) , it's the longest rapier so it'll keep melee threats away, and it looks awesome. You also get a sweet item discovery boost.
- Anonymous
The stat requirements for this weapon are ridiculous. 13 strength? Really? Rapiers are supposed to be dex weapons, and all the other rapiers require 10 or less. But this one is ultra dumb, as it's also the second most dexterity intensive (only Ricard's Rapier requires more). Any way, the stat requirements are what kill the weapon for a pure intelligence build. At meta level and just passing through the game, casters are starved for stat points to invest in attunement and endurance to have enough FP and stamina to cast and attack. Also, the scaling isn't all that impressive, crystal infused estoc and rapier will usually outdamage it. Though it does have the longest reach of all rapier's, I don't think that is enough to save it.
- Anonymous
I love using this sword in PVP. Annoys the hell out of a lot of players, lol. Dodge, poke, dodge, poke, dodge, poke. Just when they get frustrated and run at me.. Bam! Weapon art fills em full of holes.. lol.

am I the only one who get unluckier with this rapier equiped? i’ve made many test of 107 item discovery and 157... here’s my stats of 200 tries each over the time of my farming ... winged knight halberd (107 7/200). I would even say , that the rapier gives a randomised item discovery buff , depending of the item , it has its proper buff applied to that item. you can agree what my stats got , or disagree and put your results in the comment section... and no , i’m not doing this all over , it took way too long.

To add to the eternal "Crystal Estoc or Crystal Sage's Rapier" debate, here are my numbers from the current (and final?) version:
Stats: INT60, DEX18, STR16
Crystal Estoc +10 damage: 126+24 PHYS, 126+132 MAGIC = 408 AR
Crystal Sage's Rapier +5: 100+11 PHYS, 150+133 MAGIC = 394 AR
Although the overall AR is almost identical, in practical terms it feels like the Crystal Estoc usually does slightly more damage due to the higher physical component. All in all it doesn't make much of a difference which you use except that the movesets are not the same and the Rapier gives the juicy item discovery bonus.
- Anonymous
It may just be my imagination (I am 100% certain it's my imagination) but it seems like the drop rate is HIGHER when you actually use the rapier to kill, as compared to just holding it.
- Anonymous
Probably good if you're gonna use it for it's range. A quick, long weapon is an efficient tool for sorcerers. It's also specialized for INT scaling, so builds with low physical stats could probably use this. There are other alternatives for better damage though, but they aren't as convenient. Either they're slower, shorter, or consume FP, pretty much.
- Anonymous
Anyone have a spare? Need it for the id. Trying to farm sword grass for the ring. Psn: NecrotizingDeath. I'll trade if I have something you want. Symbol of Avarice perhaps?
- Anonymous
Use it for the utility of the item discovery. Other than that, crystal infusing a rapier is generally better as a backup weapon for a sorcerer, especially since it can parry in offhand, then 2 hand it and riposte with that extra critical bonus.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Looks awesome, has the best weapon art of any rapier, sadly it has***** damage. Still fun sometimes.
- Anonymous
Im usin it for the black knight greatsword and the staff that u need to give to pickle pee for solaire's stuff so im not gonna bother upgrading it instead im gonna hornet ring the***** out of EVERYTHING!!
- Anonymous
Hate or not, it's useful anyway as a farming tool so pretty much any class would want it for farming rare items.
- Anonymous
meh so much hate for this weapon. pvping between 60 and 125 I've had my best percentage with this. In case you didn't know, lock off and track the other two weapon or thrust with your camera. alot of people have died confused at the hands of me doing that.
- Anonymous
A crystal Estoc outdoes the damage of this joke. The Sword of Searching was practically a godsend compared to this piece of utter trash. Useless, useless, and even more redundantly useless. Just another piece in the puzzle that shows why Dark Souls 3 is a cacophony of poor choices in design and gameplay.

My item discovery stat is 110
When I go to equip this weapon in the active weapon slot it shows my item discovery stat will be 110.
After equipping the weapon my item discovery stat is 110.
Anyone else have this bug?
Playing on PS4 current version as of 05/01/18

Anyone done farming with these and have 1 or 2 crystal rapiers that they don't need anymore? I need them to farm Human Dregs and Proof of Concords. I'm in NG and accidentally used my Sage soul for the sorcery. I'd like to farm all covenant items before NG+. Please end my suffering! PSN: AdrianTheDork505

This can be used for parrying in your offhand, so you get a tool that boosts item discovery and parries attacks.
- Anonymous
I hate when a boss-tier weapon is reduced to a mere trinket you carry purely due to Miyazaki's*****s-n-giggles.
Since this weapon can be swung horizontally by the boss, why not let the players do the same with it? And if it has Crystals on the blade, that only makes the poor physical damage inexcusable along with the poor magic damage this weapon gets. The R1s can poke, but let the R2s be swings for Slash damage if nothing else.
- Anonymous
An active slot means I'd have to hold it to get the stat gain, correct? I'm farming Swordgrass at so 196, and it's a pain.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Imgine if its weapon art was that horizontal swipe that the actual boss does with it. Kinda like a shorter version of the pontiff knight curved sword's weapon art, but maybe a bit faster to compensate. Its a shame that a cool looking weapon like this is only being used for farming items.
- Anonymous
288 magic damage and 126 physical damage at 60/40 dex/int.
Compared to a Sharp Rapier that can reach 350 AR (40 dex) before even being buffed, this thing is useless for attacking enemies.
- Anonymous
Wow ***** you stat requirements says my sorceress - I'm playing around with CMW vs my +10 Crystal Dagger on the Lothric Knights at the castle bonfire before going onto NG+ (farming spec - 99 luck, 70 int, no str or dex) and this thing at +4 does comparable damage to CMW-buffed +9 Raw Rapier. 700ish vs 800ish back stab, 435 vs 451 charged r2, and nearly the same damage on Stance attacks. Obviously the Rapier is the stronger one in each of these instances but holy *****ing*****. Just the int scaling alone on this early game weapon *with stat penalty on the physical* is enough to nearly match an endgame sorcery cast from an endgame staff? And yeah it's fkn ridiculous, like 364 crystal sage AR vs about 540+ buffed raw rapier AR
- Anonymous
I planned a build that uses this weapon in offhand to parry. Turns out it can't. Learn the weapons before making harsh decisions, my friends
- Anonymous
Anyone have an extra one of these that they'd be willing to trade me for? Farming covenant items is driving me insane and I only need to farm Silver Knights and Deacons, but it's taking me years!!! PSN: AdrianTheDork505

I transposed the soul into the rapier, but it wasn't in my inventory!? Is there something I'm missing?

It is a pity it doesn't have a better critical, 130 would have be perfect. Only thing I don't like about this weapon is it doesn't allow "kicking." Because of this it isn't a good weapon to use against shield barring foes.
The 13 strength requirement doesn't make sense and is too high.

It has been patched. It only works if equipped in main weapon slot (right hand). Does not work off-hand.

If you're going to use it, you'll want to be either a pyromancy or sorcery build with heavy INT investment. Throw on the Magic Clutch and Leo rings, and you'll actually put out some impressive damage. Probably the most impressive thing is that you'll have 100% i-frames vs people whining about the estoc. No one ever talks about it, and I haven't received a single message about using it.

Upgraded weapon to +5, it showing +100 item discovery before equip. After equipped it, item discovery only +50.
- Anonymous
Crystal Sage's Rapier seems to have the highest range among other rapiers. Especially R2 attack. Damage is not that bad, for a rapier. Until you meet magic defense. For that cases raw Estoc is good option.
- Anonymous
As a pure mage, you'll get more damage out of a RAW weapon with MW/GMW/CMW. Having this around for when you're low on FP and near the next bonfire, not a bad call. Getting Simple Enchants, however, makes this farm-only status.
- Anonymous
I went for an assassin on my second playthrough so my attunement, intelligence, and dex were fairly high. I'm curious if its damage scales with your magic stats but haven't checked. I think it would be rad if you could stack the damage of the blade with magic weapon, but since you can't use sorceries on it, it kind of makes the weapon pretty useless, especially vs enemies who have high magic defense.
- Anonymous
Can I have it equipped but never actually hit the enemy with it, to get the bonus?
- Anonymous
Tried it out, wasn't up to satisfaction.Stuck with my choas infuse black blade.Would be nice if it was pure magic damage over splite.
- Anonymous
The descirption also talks about a buff to magic dmg, any idea how high this is?
- Anonymous
If I get one and a claymore, put the rapier in my left hand and 2H the claymore so I can stunlock silver knights then will I still get the item discovery?
- Anonymous
You get 50 for each one, for a total of 100. So the maximum drop rate is 599
- Anonymous
this rapier looks so ***** good! I love the thinness with the small crystals formed on its blade, its such a shame I am a dex build and I can't use it because it scales with int
- Anonymous
Does anyone know a better sword than this for thursting and int scaling?
- Anonymous
Pointless to mention, how good Estoc is. This one is just Estoc for pure INT builds. It is slightly weaker (only slightly) then quality build Estoc, simple because it can be buffed with magic. Still difference not that noticable outside the tryhard PvP. Probably the best melee option for sorcerers out there with infused dark sword.
- Anonymous
The critical bonus on this seems to be more in line with the other rapier at 110 instead of the listed 100. Anyone else notice this?
- Anonymous
Okay, might just be me, but for some odd reason this weapon only deals physical damage, which is beyond miniscule. Does anyone know a fix for this wierd bugg?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Just a question incase anyone knows. If I'm using this, do I have to use it the whole fight or just once to get the drop rates. Or do I just have to kill it with it to get the increase (final blow). If anyone knows and can answer would be much appreciated.
- Anonymous
Anyone other than me disappointed that this weapon comes out of the box with native magic damage and INT scaling, but can't be infused with magic?
- Anonymous
If I hold this in my left hand with something else in my right, will L2 parry?
- Anonymous
Can it be infused? Thinking of hollow upgrade for this for extra item discovery.

I was hoping this was more like Velka's rapier. I loved that weapon and was hoping to see its move set return as another magic rapier.

It's quite a nice weapon. Had a damage cap of 457 on my Sorc full int build using this weapon, he only had enough str/dex to wield it. For a 1handed weapon, I approve of the damage. The only downside is you cannot use fire paper/lightning paper etc on it due to it being pre-imbued with magic.
No INT requirement, but high STR/DEX! And low critical! Ridiculous!
