Dark Gem is an Upgrade Material in Dark Souls 3.

Dark Gem

dark gem

A gem of infused titanite. Born of disembodied humanity.

Used in infusion to create dark weapons.

Dark weapons inflict dark damage, and scale with intelligence and faith.

Dark Gem Usage

Dark Gem Locations

Notes

  • Requires the Profaned Coal in order to start infusing weapons.
  • Some weapons have higher Dark scaling than others (e.g. Corvian's gets E scaling at +0, while a Notched Whip gets D).
  • An alternative to the Dark Blade miracle for a non-caster character. and an alternative to Human Pine Resin that scales damage.
  • A variety of enemies (Silver Knights, for example) and a couple of bosses (Vordt, Dancer) are fairly weak to Dark damage.
  • With minimal Intelligence and Faith, it's best to stick to Deep gems.
  • Damage Scaling softcaps at 30/30 INT/FTH
  • It offers the exact samge damage as the Chaos Gem, the only difference being the damage type. This being the general rule with some exceptions like player vs player or Murky Hand Scythe.

Trivia

  • To our dismay, the Dark Sword gets renamed to Reinforced Dark Sword when infused with a Dark Gem.

Every time I accept in my mind that the dark build was fair, I get torn apart in four straight sword R1s, or one parry (i dont like tears so i dont use it). Impossible to fully block with any shield, absurd damage output, access to virtually every weapon class. Even just in PvE, being able to use dark or fire damage at will is a huge boon compared to sorcerers who are locked into magic. Dark builds really have it all.

People say "split damage bad", but this (and by extension, chaos) infusion is one of the best. Very high total AR offsets the split damage "penalty", vast suite of available weapons, chips through Black Knight Shield, Tears of Denial requires no otherwise wasted levels or ring swapping, Dark is a generally difficult damage type to resist without giving up a lot of physical defense. Can't buff? More like don't have to buff. Plus if you happen to run into someone wearing the domino mask you'll obliterate them.

I love that they buffed dark elemental damage. It created a new build. However, the community greatly over estimates how good dark builds are. To be clear, dark builds are one of the best kinds of builds, however, there is this idea among players that dark builds have essentially replaced quality builds. This isn't true. In fact, after playing many hours with both, I'd argue quality builds are a bit better. Here's why: 1) quality builds use strength and leveling strength raises your physical defense which is much more important than raising elemental defenses and strength gets a free 50% increase when two handing, 2) while dark builds do tend to out damage quality builds slightly, this is mitigated by the use of resins, albeit only temporality, 3) dark builds have a soft counter that is accessible to EVERYONE and that's eating a Black Bug Pellet. For some reason, not many players take advantage of this, but when they do, dark builds get a huge nerf for 2 minutes (and then they can easily just pop another), 4) and I saved the best for last: quality builds have access to the best spells in the game: items. If you haven't tried using Throwing Knives on a quality or DEX build, you're missing out. Not a lot of players know this, but Throwing Knives can be absolutely busted in the right hands. Then there's BFBs and Kucks that are basically like discount sorceries that cost nothing to use. Dark builds are great, but they aren't the only melee build.

restarted my pyro run because I forgot to get moundmakers before the tree. first puss of man in high wall gave me a dark gem, feelsgood

I was gonna make a crystal lothric sword but I then saw that the dark infusion and it has a significantly higher AR. Is Dark infusion broken or something? I'm have 30 int but only 8 faith

              • Anonymous

That last bit of trivia is wrong, it's a dark dark sword. Not reinforced, you'd need a refined gem for that.

Took me 14 runs through kings garden with 357 item discovery to get my first gem. Didn't get any drops at all from the slugs. These seem to be a lot harder to farm than the chaos gems.

                  • Easiest Method to Farm: 1. Attune/Respec whatever you need to do to use fire spell like Chaos Bed Vestiges or Chaos Fire Orb(Ball?) OR use strong Fire AR weapon. 2. Crystal Sage Rapier and Covetous Gold Serpent Ring (+3 obv best choice but whatever). 3. Spawn Dancer Bonfire, go up and left through Consumed Garden, ignore cathedral knights and spam fire spells from safe distant at Pus of Men or Slugs. Notes: this method is for lower levels looking to have to deal with Harald Legion Knights.(I am able to get at least 1 Gem every other run! RNG is RNG at SL22 +2) Harald Knights aren't so bad if you have a decent fire AR weapon with a critical modifier, along with hornet ring when you plunge attack them, however plunging isnt the easiest to pull off on smaller weapons, the legion knight also can't be in a hyper armor animation because youll just fall through them and do normal plunge damage. However as a l'm low level these guys can one shot me unless I'm embered so you're choice.

Does anyone have an excess of dark gems they would like to drop. Farming has not been going well. Steam: Zarg9872

someone tell me please which is better, to have an infused weapon (like dark, chaos) or to have a buffed weapon (like Carthus' Flame Arc or Dark Blade)? I'm running a pyromancer with 28 str and 40 int 40 fth. And have 3 slots of magic.

                        • Anonymous

this is one of the hardest gems to farm in game, I use to farm this on dragon barracks bridge where you can find two pussyman, I have 615item discovery, SL 120, 99 luck, two crystal rapiers, gold ring+3, mimic helm and rusted gold coin. I can finish within 30secs every run with chaos twin sellsword, I swear you can get only titanite chunks, embers and usually large titanite.

                          • Anonymous

Fun fact: at base str/dex and 9 int/9 fth Dark deals more damage than Deep when infused on most +4 weapons. So Deep is basically useless, even at low levels/weapon upgrades.

If you stop being a scrub and git gud you can kill the Harold Knights pretty fast with two parries and riposte from a chaos dagger. Instead of wasting time climbing up to plunge them.

                              • Anonymous

Harald Knights have a higher drop rate than those slugs (at least the first three found on the way to the abyss swamp). Firstly, there are eight of those slugs, and there are three to six of the knights. Secondly, I just get these gems somewhat easily from the knights when I don't even have any drop-boosting items equipped, versus not getting any from the slugs over about ten runs while having the symbol of avarice, crystal sage's rapier, and covetous gold serpent ring +0.

                                • Anonymous

Rare drop from Pus of Man in Consumed King's Garden, the slugs seem to have a slightly better drop than the pus in that area. 8 can be found under the center structure.

Soft cap for dark infused weapons is 30int/30faith, while some weapons still pertain decent phys scaling with either str or dex. Coupled with a blindfold mask for glass cannon builds, dark weapons tend to have the highest raw AR in the game. Take that as you will.

                                    • Going from Lothric Castle bonfire and smacking everything with CHAOS zweihander is a good way to farm this things if you don't want to farm them in dlc. Cathedral knights die quickly, puss of man gets staggered and killed in two hits, then just go for slugs as it is easier to get drop from them

                                      • Can anyone confirm? I'm pretty sure Dark (and Chaos and Blessed) Gems add Faith scaling to any innate lightning damage the weapon might have. Can anyone confirm this? You can try it out with Dragonslayer's Axe or Lothric Knight Greatsword. I know it already works for the Drakeblood, so I wanted to doublecheck.

There is another dark gem not mentioned in the ringed city dlc, It's right at the entrance of the swamp by a few locust enemies.

The dark damage scale on dark souls 3 on the same way that dark souls 2? I mean, ¿you need faith and intelligence because the dark damage scale with the lowest of the 2?

                                            • Anonymous

You can easily farm these off the the two pus of man near Lothric Castle's Dragon Barracks bonfire. When they transform, the game is basically spawning an entirely new entity with a clean aggro state, which is why you lose target lock when they do. With the slumbering dragon ring, you can walk behind them as they transform, and stunlock them to death with pretty much any +6 or above fire infused weapon. The drop rate isn't great (I was farming with about 300 item find) and pulled in 2 per hour. But, I'm also getting decent souls, embers, large shards, and chunks (at a rate of about 5/hour). Just make sure that as they're transforming, you are far enough away that their whipping "tail" doesn't hit you as that will pull aggro; it's lashes out quite a distance!

are weapon's infusion buff enhanced with clutch rings?
I mean... if i use a dark clutch ring with a dark infused weapon, would that work?

                                                • Anonymous

Here to confirm that the dark gem drops off of the harald legion enemies in TRC DLC. (Don't know how rare, but dropped pretty frequent for me.)

                                                  • Anonymous

The best place to farm these is from Oceiros, the Consumed King Bonfire go past the knights then to the right first they will stop following you kill the 2 man of pus (VERY LOW DROP RATE) then use a bow with fire arrows and kill every slug in the area (low drop but higher than man of pus) kill the last man of pus then homeward bone.

                                                    Repeat.

                                                    2 hours=2/5 gems with CSR-CSGR+3-Avarice-Coin.

Hope for good RNG with this gem.

Is there a quick and easy way to check for weapons with S scaling in dark or do I have to check each weapon manually?

                                                      • Anonymous

this needs an update: The slugs in the consumed kings garden also drop these. Not too sure if its rare but I get more from them rather than the pus of man

                                                        • Anonymous

Farmed about 15 runs from Ocerios Bonfire. (To not bother with elevators)
Used Hidden Body and Chaos Great Fireball.

1 Dark Gem dropped from one of the eight slugs in the middle of the zone, another 1 Dark Gem dropped from Pus of Man.
Had 307 item discovery in both instances.

That's about 1 dark gem from about 30 Pus of Man and 1 dark gem from about 120 slugs. And that's at 307 item discovery.

                                                          • Anonymous

Instead of Pus of Man, the enemies that drop Dark Gems in Consumed King's Garden are the Slugs in the toxic pool. (Confirmed: Took me 4 runs to get 1)
Also i think that it is just 1 of the slugs that drop it. The ones that are near trees. (still needs confirmation).

                                                            • Anonymous

For a Pyromancer, Chaos and Dark infusions are very handy, and best, obviously if you just buff your weapon with Carthus Flame you will deal more damage, but using Chaos or Dark infusions come very handy, you don't need to use a slot for Carthus Flame Arc, you don't have to rebuff your weapon everytime, you don't spend time buffing your weapon(and specially in PvP and boss fights you may not have time to do buff), you don't need FP to buff your weapon.

Also many weapons have really good scaling with Chaos or Dark infusions(both infusions always have same scaling):
A/A scaling for Carthus Curved Greatsword, Astora Greatsword, Murakumo, Great Corvian Scythe, etc.
B/B scaling for Carthus Curved Sword, Zweihander, Dark Sword, Claymore, Gotthard Twinswords, Greatsword, Cathedral Knight Greatsword, Lothric Knight Greatsword, Exile Greatsword, Onikiri and Ubadachi, etc.

These are just some examples there is a lot more good weapon with A/A or B/B scaling, and a few "meta" weapons with C/C scaling. As a note, if you know any weapon that scales S with Lightning or Crystal, this means it will have A/A for Chaos or Dark, if it has A instead of S then it will be B/B, and etc.

I have killed about a hundred transformed puss of man with a discovery rating of 361 and not a single gem. It there something I have to do to enable the drop?

                                                                • Anonymous

is it only me or is the ar of a dark weapon alot lower than a chaos one because i have 2 Lothric Knight Swords on my pyromancer both +10 one chaos one dark and the chaos one is 516 but the dark one is only 466 what there a nerf to dark recently because they both used to have the same ar

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

, they're basically the same thing, just with one being dark, and the other fire, but which is the better? It'd be on common resistances on enemies, are there that many dark weak enemies? I know there are fire weak ones, but also very fire resistant ones, I know puss of man enemies and the like are weak to fire, and I'd assume resistant to dark (As they basically are darkness...) And also players, I know strength adds fire resist, so shouldn't that make dark a better pvp option? (minus split damage being pretty ass for pvp)

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous
