Dragonhead Greatshield is a Shield in Dark Souls 3. It is part of The Ringed City.

This shield, as hard as a great boulder, is formed by the head of the descendant of an Archdragon.

The Ringed Knights, by command of the gods, stood amongst the ranks who set out to slay the dragons, but their contributions were never lauded.

Skill: Dragon Roar
Even the descendant of an Archdragon perishes not, and use of this skill restores its former strength, sending surrounding foes flying with a dragon roar.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Infused.
  • Reinforced with Titanite Scale
  • Provides an average block of exactly 66%.
  • The weapon art has about the same range as a Shield Bash, and can stagger a target upon a successful hit, which gives you a free R1 hit.
  • The shield's stability isn't as good as most other Greatshields, especially for the weight and stat requirement, but the weapon art compensates for that.
  • With 14 ATT alongside 15 FTH, you can use spells like Replenishment, Caressing Tears, Magic Barrier, or Tears of Denial to add some utility to your kit (and some extra FP for more of this shield's weapon art).
  • Though not mentioned in the in-game description, the weapon art provides an effect similar to perserverance
  • Can be buffed with Magic Shield and Great Magic Shield

Location/Where to Find

  • The Ringed City: From the Ringed City Streets bonfire, head through the shortcut until you get to the bridge with the dragon in the distance. This shield is under the bridge.

People don't understand the usefulness of this shield

I will be the first to say I'm not great at PvP in the souls games

What's the #1 weapon that would benefit from perseverance that doesn't get it?

      Straight swords.

I'm 23/1 in the arena today using this with a refined Lothric ss and lightning bundles.

I usually win 1/4 ish fights.

        Absolute garbage of a shield.
        >Weights more than Curse Ward Greatshield
        >Stability of 64 of +5, which is just 1 stability more than +5 Silver Knight Shield - a shield that weights almost 3 times less than this
        >Weapon Art deals no damage, only staggers the opponent instead of knocking them back and provides a buff of poise and damage reduction for a very short time. Maybe it breaks through enemy shields with relative easy but i wouldn't know because nobody uses shields in PvP and those few who do have enough brains to not have them up when you use the WA.

The only good thing to say about this shield is 90% fire damage reduction which makes it very useful against pyromancers, but it doesn't justify the ridiculous weight - and by extension vitality requirements - of the thing while it has an absolutely pathetic stability like that.
FromSoft once again with their top-notch balance and weapon design, woooooooooo.

trash, it would be good if the weapon art did damage and also it would be good if it throws away someone who is close, like how the ringed knights do it?

          • Anonymous

Bad stability for a greatshield, high stat reqs and many weapons that normally bounce off from a greatshield, like spears and straight swords, don't always do so with this one. At least it would look cool, if it wasn't so low res. And I'm still probably gonna use it on my ng++ crack goatman cosplay run.

For anyone doing shield only challenge builds: this shield has the highest base damage in the game and does more damage than a heavy infused greatshield at 50 str. It's one heck of a unit, too bad the WA is kinda garbage

              • Anonymous

I was a bit disappointed that the WA didn't do damage (after getting walloped by those Ringed Knights' roar, I figured it was time for some pay back). As for the Perseverance boost (without the additional absorption effect of other weapons and a thrust counter frame to boot, mind), I suppose you could use it to run right at your opponent and force rolls (to catch), but most opponents roll when I run straight at them with a medium shield or higher raised anyway. Idk, Shield Bash does a little bit more for me, and it's hard to justify any Greatshield without some stellar stats (like a particular damage type reduction, i.e. Simple Lothric Knight GS or Deep Cathedral Knight GS) especially since the medium shields (BKS and Lothric KS, in particular) are right there when comparing stability, but at half their weight.

Pairs beautifully with the Farron greatsword's special attack. Use the WA, then uses two of the farron GS's weapon skill moves ( Not the parry). Kill them Gankers dead real fast. Yip kay at motherfu.....

This WA is very good for pyromancers. Using the WA stuns the enemy so u can Land a R1. Buttle Most important is, that you getan a good poise so u can Hit the enemy with ur sacred flame. Even if they Hit u. Ort u can Start spamming the flame fan. I like this shield. I always Land a sacred flame After Using the WA

I don't think many know this but the greatshield's weapon art can also guard break most shielded players (tested this on regular shields but not on greatshields). I think the WA can have its uses against turtles but again its situational and the duration can lead to a backstab.

                      • Anonymous

Been using this thing for a bit. Not bad on bait sets. Pairs relatively well with spears. As for most people griping about the "useless" WA?

It's situational, not something for spamming.

This shield's WA works well for baiting charged, roll, and leaping attacks. Get them to commit to the attack, pop the WA (Which blocks while casting, which is pretty useful) hit your committed opponent with the WA's stagger, and then punish them with the hyper armor boost.

This isn't perseverance. You don't just pop it and go rambo. You pop it to rek rambo.

Anyone willing to spare any of your unwanted Dragon Greatshield or its smaller counterpart? I can trade for a +5 Ringed Knight Paired Greatsword. I'm on NG+7 and getting past even the Demon Prince's is a pain.

                          • Anonymous

You dont even have to meet the stat requirements to get the poise from the weapon art but you dont get the annoyingly useless dragon roar thing. Because***** has to be balanced as long as it aint an easily exploitable ai enemy. You still need fp to get the poise though.

This page is incorrect about it being buffable, I have cast regular and great magic shield on this. I do not know how to update/change the page though.

Basically you use this with a fast weapon like a straight sword and use the weapon art for 5 seconds of poise

Lmaooo im able to tank through stupid greatswords and ultras with my straight sword r1 spam. Dunno why no one has caught on yet

The shield should have the moveset of the ringed knights so you can knock down your opponments and also the gain the poise damage.

Well... it looks cool but the viability isn't really there.
The buff is not as good, though one could use the poise, but the elemental resistances are bad and the weight is too high for its stats in general.

                                    • Anonymous

The roar interrupts and stuns enemies, but the range is pretty crappy. However, it also activates you poise for ~5 seconds, much like steady chant from talismans. Bear in mind that this is just poise, it doesn't block enemy attacks or increases your defense.

Being able to power through attacks though is wonderful. Especially good when paired with spellcasting since you won't be interrupted as easily when this is on.
