Farron Greatsword is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

Greatsword of the Abyss watchers which is atypically paired with a dagger.

The dagger is utilized as a wedge in the left hand while the greatsword is held in the right, a unique technique that was synonymous with the Undead Legion. Confounds foes the manner of wolves hunting prey.

Skill: Parry
Deflect an attack when timed properly and follow up with a critical hit, executed with the dagger.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Buffed or Infused.
  • Reinforced with Titanite Scales.
  • The Farron Greatsword has a range of 38.4928xl on the R1, and 68.4138xl on the L1. It is the shortest of the two Unique Ultra Greatswords.
  • Does 20% bonus damage against Abyssal enemies:
  • Does 20% bonus damage against Abyssal bosses:
  • The moveset when dual wielding has attacks similar to the Abyss Watchers, and has a 3-attack cycle like all other dual weapons.
  • You can chain R1 and L1 attacks. For example: If you do two R1 attacks and then an L1 attack, you'll do the third L1 attack.
  • The Parry has identical parry frames to a medium shield. Same Startup, 2 more active, and 2 less recovery than medium shield (30fps).
  • The L1/LB attack is not affected by the weight value.
  • The L1/LB attack deals 9 and 31 poise damage per hit.
  • Since it doesn't require FP to be used, it can be handy for low level builds without any investment on Attunement.
  • Has an A scaling in DEX when fully upgraded which is unusual for an Ultra Greatsword.
  • Regardless of being wielded by either "one-hand" or "two-hands (with off-hand dagger)," weapon attacks will be treated as being "one-handed" along with any of the associated properties of "one-handedness" (i.e.: attacks can still be parried, attacks will still be deflected by shields, no bonus AR from STR, etc.).
  • Has an unused Weapon Skill, in which the wielder poses a stance and thrust similar to the Stomp skill. This was replaced by Parry.
  • Both the dagger and the greatsword can be parried.
  • The Farron Greatsword is ironically not compatible with the Legion Etiquette gesture, meaning the dagger will disappear when it is performed.

Softcaps & Scaling:

  • 18/20 = 375 AR = Base Stats
  • 40/20 = 449 AR = Str Softcap
  • 18/40 = 492 AR = Dex Softcap
  • 40/40 = 566 AR = Quality Build

I use this thing while wearing fallen knight armor at PvP and I always hot easily parried every time I use the L1 spam, 10/10 weapon

Of course people are upset over the fact that we can't buff this sword with fire like the Abyss Watchers do, but the reason is fairly obvious. See, the Ashen One is too short. Even if you put on the same armor and pointed helmet, you will be much shorter than the genuine article. This means that the Abyss Watchers have more degrees Farron height, which lets them ignite their swords.

        • Anonymous

I still don't understand why they gave this a parry instead of the weapon art they were going to give it initially. I dunno about the rest of us but I've never been parried by the Abyss Watchers lol

          • Anonymous

The other day, someone invaded me who tumble buffed this with crystal magic weapon (I think, it had a dark blue aura), fortunately they only had about 800 health. Another exploiter bites the dust.

This seems to synergize extremely well with Pontiff's Eyes / Old Wolf Curved Sword. I know that bigger weapons take fewer hits to proc them, and I think the dagger hits exacerbate it further.

Fun story: with just the Pontiff's Left Eye (the one that heals 30 HP), I ended Deacons of the Deep at full health without dodging or drinking Estus. It would proc a couple times on a single spin through several Deacons.

The only thing I think could be better about this weapon is if you could put charcoal pine resin on it, so you could truly become and Abyss Watcher.

Don't let the scaling letters fool you, this is a 40/40 weapon to its core. 20/60 is lower overall AR despite A dex scaling and only C str scaling that can't benefit from two-handing.

This is one of the most fun PVP weapons in capable hands. It gets a bad reputation from the edgy Fallen Knight noob L1 Spammers who are easily parried, but the trick is all the mix-up and back-steps attacks you can pull off. The range you can travel is immense like your character is on the prowl. Many people forget it can parry as well. This is one of the flagship Dark Souls 3 Weapons.

super cool weapon, I always gotta stop myself from converting my current build to the almighty spinsword when I beat the abyss watchers in each playthrough

This makes regular enemies in PvE such a breeze. A single press of L1 closes the distance, baits attacks, gets around shields, and interrupts the attacks. And it works on mobs too.

Fighting Gael with this feels pretty badass, ducking under some of his attacks and pulling out your own little flips. 10/10 would recommend dunking on Gael

This thing is just great. Super duper good against slow moving enemies, especially turtle builds in PvP.

In PvE, it's pretty great. Good scaling with modest requirements and a true Swiss Army Knife for dealing with anything. You've got your big bonk, fast attacks, damn good moveset and a parry for good measure.

Probably one of, if not the best early game weapons. Way better than Wolf Knight with similar stat requirements.

This + curseward greatshield is devilish. You never know if the other is gonna turtle, parry or simply trade blows, and the only thing you can telegraph is two-handing the weapon.

Quality weapon and super fun on 6-phantom invasions. If you see a moundmaker wielding this you know it's gonna be a laugh

I was vibing with someone just outside demon princes and did a few L1 jiggles at him, he tried to return the motion

I'm guessing he forgot which weapon he was using, but we all got a laugh as they straight launched themself off a cliff

I fought the phaser skelly on the bridge at the catacombs, I accidentally pushed the spinning attack for this on a corner, I almost fell but the dagger plant saved me

                                      • I fought Pontiff in my NG+ run and absolutely clowned him with it on my first try. It's very good against a lot of the tall-dude-with-sword-type bosses because most of their attacks will breeze right over your head during the L1/LB combo.

                                        • Fought the Pontiff in my NG+ run and absolutely clowned him with this weapon. This weapon is really strong against a lot of the large-dude-in-armor-type of enemies because most of their attacks will just breeze right over your head while you're in the L1/LB combo.

Did this thing get buffed in some update? I swear, like 2 years ago in my first playthrough I used this and besides cool moveset it seemed pretty underpowered. Recently I tried this at Pontif metalords and it absolutely CRUSHES. Plus, L1 is supposedly easy to parry, but as of now I have yet to see someone to manage that.

                                            • Anonymous

Perseverance is bane of this thing. People who use it focus so much on L1 combo, that when you show em you can tank it and stop it, they don't know what to do and try again and again. Kinda funny.

                                              • Anonymous

The amount of times I seen people use their L1 out of range and presented their butthole for me to poke lmao.

A important note, this is the ultra greatsword requiring the secound least amount of strength, however it requires the most dexterity

                                                  • Anonymous

This weapon gets a bad rap in the community, but if you take time to learn how to use it well you can keep pace even with metalords. Most important tips for a newer player: 1) Never, ever, unless absolutely 1000% certain it will work, never commit to the 3rd L1. 2) pretty much all of your attacks can be parried, so be especially unpredictable when you see a parry shield or caestus.

                                                    • Anonymous

Blocking against this weapon is really weird. You HAVE to have some distance from the L1 or you will get hit from behind. Hugging them with a shield is not effective but keeping distance will help space them out.

                                                      • Anonymous

"The farron greatsword is ironically not compatible with the legion etiquette emote, meaning the dagger will disappear when it is performed"

Lmao this game is so ****ing stupid.

                                                        • Anonymous

Been using this since launch in PvP. Going through every meta with have been weird since it's stayed the same for all these years. The way you fight other people and the way they fight you haven't changed, it's the classic off-meta pick at this point. They either know what to do to get the parry or backstab, get tossed and pull out the crossbow/magic/metawhatever, or get blended with the L1 L1 R1 L1.
So in PvP is it actually good? If you have insane patience and can bait parries by safely acting stupid, then yes. Of course, there are also newer players that don't know and can get styled on with beyblade into R1 rollcatch L1 for a pseudo combo that deals over 1000 damage. And in certain invasion scenarios, it can prove to be extremely potent, usually groups. If you get summoned for Spears it's INSANELY fun because of the buffs you get.
Put straight it's fun on a quality build because of its truck status + beyblade combos, but it's a difficult weapon to master. Once you figure it out though, the only things that can stop you are parry gods and exploding bolts

Is there any way to fight people who use this without parrying or hyper armor? Been trying to space the l1s but it's weird

Abyss Watchers, Artorias, Gael, DS Armour, etc.

The mod basically shows you that boss movesets are 100% better than the players'.
For those who play it on Steam, feel free to give it a try, just set your game offline so you don't get banned. You can find the mod on
                                                                  YouTube.

I wanna make a quality build JUST to use this bad boy lmao.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

This is kinda the best pve ugs in the game. It absolutely annihilates everything with the unique moveset except bosses, and it still does well against some of them as a normal sword because of the bonus damage against abyssal enemies

                                                                            • Anonymous

Actually a solid weapon. Once you get a feel for the L1s, you can mix them up with R1s as they combo into each other; this makes you harder to parry due to the fact the L1 is far slower to connect fully than the R1, but covers more distance, has a melee dagger slash that catches parries too close, and better roll-catching ability.

Some gankers/noobs also simply don't know how to counter it and stand dumbly while they get hit by it. Just DON'T do the 3rd L1, it's easy to parry with no skill required and anything from a Caestus to a medium shield. If your opponent doesn't have a parry tool ready, it is still easy to roll away from or backstab punish. If you want to put the pressure on and have plenty of stamina left, follow up L1 -> L1 -> R1. It'll be too fast to parry if they were stunlocked by the first 2 L1s, so they'll either get hit or roll away.

While this weapon can't really trade with other ultras, not least because dex leaves fewer stat points to invest into vitality due to the higher softcap, it's not really meant to. With good timing, you can actually use an L1 to hit an overhead attacking ultra while also dodging their R1 from the spin. Play it more like a regular greatsword, going for trades against smaller weapons, and whiff punishes against larger ones. Yeah, it's no meta weapon, but this thing is reasonably powerful as long as you don't just mindlessly spam L1.

Fanart of a wolf girl abyss watcher using this. It's also kemonomimi, so no furry ****(i have nothing against furries it's just not for me).

                                                                                • Decided to give this weapon a go recently... Yah **** that this weapon is absolute trash for a UGS so im going back to my claymore crying over not transfusing my Wolf Knight Sword

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Watch me as i sweep the floor while beyblading into oblivion. ****ing oceiros sent me straight to the shadow realm for the 20th consecutive time. Did i ever stop thinking about how cool those moves were? Not one second.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I heard this weapon was bad cause le L1 spam can get easily parried, the thing is I just mix up my attack with alot of heavy and people just try parry me while they understood the mistake with the fairly good damage on it, very good weapon for pvp in my opinion as long you just use your brain, like with all the weapon

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Have problems with gael? Spam L1 with this troll. He mostly swings horizontally, which youll dodge while swinging on the ground. But on pontiffs and a old wolf curved sword on your back and you heal like crazy, since the little dagger stab counts to the ugs hit counter.

You can duck under most attacks with the L1, and the attacks that can hit are usually misses due to the speed and turning curves.
