Gael's Greatsword is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3 The Ringed City DLC.
Greatsword of Slave Knight Gael, the only weapon that he kept with him from beginning to end.
Originally an executioner's sword made for decapitation, this blade is heavily chipped and stained with the blood of countless battles.
Skill: Blade of Peril
A precarious technique unique to undead Gael. Leap in any direction, slamming the greatsword to the ground, then follow with normal attack for a large spinning slash, or strong attack to back-step and jump foward in an overhead slam.
Notes and Tips:
- Not buffable or infusable.
A true combo for this weapon (while two-handing) is R1+L2+R1.- Upgrades with Titanite Scales.
- Gael's Greatsword +5 has 504 AR at 40 strength and 40 dexterity.
- The sword resembles a broken version of the Executioner's Greatsword. Before the boss fight with Slave Knight Gael, while he is still an NPC, he uses an Executioner's Greatsword.
- The spin part of Blade of Peril (L2+R1) can be parried.
- If you have a shield that allows for the use of weapon skills, the shield will still be held as you perform the weapon art.
Softcaps & Scaling:
- 2 Handed Stats:
- 19/13 = 392 AR = Base Stats
- 30/13 = 448 AR = Str Softcap
- 19/39 = 452 AR = Dex Softcap
- 40/13 = 463 AR
- 19/60 = 464 AR
- 19/99 = 479 AR = Dex Hardcap
- 66/13 = 495 AR = Str Hardcap
- 28/39 = 505 AR = Combined Softcap
- 40/40 = 525 AR
- 66/40 = 556 AR
- 66/99 = 583 AR = Combined Hardcap
- After softcaps it gets less than 2 AR per level
- 2 handed Quality weapon
- Scales well with both stats
- Gains more from Strength than Dexterity
Location/Where to Find
- Obtained via Soul Transposition from the Soul of Slave Knight Gael for 20,000 souls.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

The fact that this thing deals strike damage is not to be ignored. Look at all the most popular armors and they'll prioritize Physical, or Standard absorption. Their heavy Millwood and Black Iron armors defend against this thing like medium armor or worse, so it will net you more damage than a Claymore in most instances, even with lower AR. And that's to say nothing of the insane weapon art.

I feel so disgusting doing this thing's true combo but god damn does it do some damage

It's so bs trying to fight this weapon with an ultra. It feels like this weapon gets ultra-tier damage without any of the disadvantages.
- Anonymous
People looking at the 525 dmg on a quality build and wondering “ thats kinda low” are forgetting the fact it’s Strike damage. It hits like swinging a small greathammer.

onestly if this sword had the visual effects of gaels throw attack wen using the wpn art it would use the wpn art much more and make it look way cooler.

Feels so good landing that WA R2 when the enemy thinks they're safe.
- Anonymous
Fully charge 2 handed R2 can hurt like a MF making people think you are cheating.
- Anonymous
People dont realize but the roll catch on this thing is a guaranteed 2 hit combo since you can follow it up with L2 and close the distance completely. I never see it being used like that.
- Anonymous
Nothing more fitting as the final reward of the series than a broken greatsword. Brings the whole weary journey full circle. I only wish it scaled with luck, since it's stained with the blood of the dark soul, the source of humanity

There is a cut-content version of this. It's called "Gael's Dusty Greatsword"
basically a bigger, more corroded version of the weapon.

Love rocking this sword, i was a big fan of artorias's GS through out the series until i got this beast. Worth the trouble to get if your a GS and no shield build

Claymore has a better moveset in my opinion but the true combo on this thing is fantastic and stylish

Fun weapon, do flips, do more flips, do spin, but show respect when using such weapon, no one likes when you start acting like a fish on land, show the weapon art respect and use it as part of a combo, become skillful with it you can use the weapon art follow up to jump towards someone who has ran.

Hehe Funny Flip Sword goes Swoooooosh.
Op? Kinda
Extremely fun to use with a Nice Moveset? hell yeah

I was wondering which sword is better betwen this and Farron Greatsword (mostly because of the flippy spinny attacks), any thoughts?

heres a cool combo you can try in arenas :
first when you start, use the first part of the weapon art, try not to hit them with it, while in the weapon art, rotate your character so that your back is facing your opponent. now use the R2 weapon art, but delay the crap out of it.
when the animation for R2 weapon art starts, lock on to your opponent. the lock should rotate your character, but i like to move the joystick even though i locked on. if the R2 weapon art lands, you can chain that into two normal R1's, with a total damage output of about 600-800 damage. its a really fun combo, but it rarely lands, so i only reccomend doing this on people you have never fought before. this weapon is really fun and i hope other people can enjoy it too :)

ah yes, the easiest to land and the most devastating true combo in the game jsut after the spliteaf

i wish this weapon had a buff that would activate only during the weapon art. it would only affect the appearance but i think it would look cool.

It says a lot about the Executioner's Greatsword that a rusted and broken version is better.

Such a garbage weapon all you people do is prance around like a ballerina all day with this weapon but pkcs doesn’t need that so go pick it up and git Gud already

This weapon would've been more fitting for Knight Artorias. It would've made his boss fight more epic.

Isn't it funny that Gael's weapon (1st phase) resembles the Abyss Great sword held by Knight Artorias?

the best part about this greatsword is how, when used correctly, can absolutely SWAG on straight sword spammers

the real question can a broken great-sword get broken even more

Despite having a higher strength scaling it does more dmg with 40 dex 26 str than 40 str 26 dex...

Love this blade in PVP and NG+. Roll combos off R1+WA makes for over 800 damage per combo. Been using right hand Gael off hand lothric war banner with good results in Pontiff’s back yard.

If you really want an explanation as to why this thing is such a great endgame weapon whyle literally being a broken sword; its the only weapon to have bathed in the Blood of the Dark Soul. In his first fase, Gael’s sword is just a ruined piece of metal. But as soon as he starts bleeding on this useless thing, it transforms. The blade’s color, I suspect, is also a byproduct of the Blood of the Dark Soul, as the bloodstain isn’t there anymore when he starts fighting again. The sword couldn’t have been repaired by the Blood, it could only be made stronger than it already was. At the very end of time, where you fight Gael, the Dark Soul is the greatest form of power in whats left of the world. A sword imbued with a literal essence of it is bound to become powerful.

Nah you noobs suck and this sword is shhit. Why bother jumping around with the WA like a big tryhard.

There is a mistake with the upgrade materials above the table it should be scales not twinkling

R1-L2-R1 true combo will make most people rethink trading with you
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
This weapon will break poise of talisman or canvas talisman weapon arts with two R1s. so if you wanna trade hit, you should use sunlight talisman instead.

Unlocked backstep WA after a backstab catches ppl off guard pretty often
- Anonymous
With a quality build, the AR is minutely better than artorias' meaning you can swap some of the two most versatile GS WA on your build, not to mention stance swords

Gael's Greatsword 101 - This weapon fits well on a variety of builds. Generally though, your STR should be greater than or equal to your DEX with this weapon. You should be two handing this weapon most of the time. Although, the one handed R1s can be useful as they swing horizontally. This weapon has arguably the best true combo in the game (a series of hits that are inescapable in PVP every time if done correctly... and without lag): R1, weapon art, R1. While the weapon art does consume FP, it, and therefore the true combo, can be executed without FP. There is no reduction in damage output, however, the weapon art will consume more stamina. The true combo should be used after every successfully landed two handed R1 with few exceptions. The weapon art also has an R2 follow-up, but it's very bad and you should never use it. Even if it is super cool looking. The two handed R2 is also extremely good and should not be over looked. Since it can be charged by holding down R2, the opponent won't be quite sure when the attack will initiate. Fully charged R2s hit opponents surprisingly often, which deals devastating damage. Because the two handed R2s are so hard hitting and their timing is unpredictable, people are usually wary while you're charging it, so it's fairly low risk, too. This weapon has decent absorption and stability, so don't be too worried about needing to block with it from time to time. While this weapon is quite well rounded, it's somewhat slow speed can make it a bit sluggish when trying to hit fleeing opponents, so a faster, lighter weapon in your off-hand is a nice tool for those situations.

Did anyone else noticed that this weapon deals more damage to certain pve enemies? (skeletons, murkmans, etc...) how does it works?

Reminds me of Narsil, Aragorn's broken sword from the Lord of the Rings.

TBH this weapon is way too od. Like seriously*****'s so anime it belongs in bloodborne.

Perfect for getting a thousand dislikes because your opinion on the weapon was controversial. Be careful out there my anonymous brothers.

I will trade literally anything for this weapon that *****hole Gael won’t let me hit him
- Anonymous
It's not actually broken, the missing part is an infinitely extensible invisible blade that hits across seas, continents, and feelings
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Try out the outrider set for Fashion Souls. The metal/blue contrasts well with the red of the blade and the WA gives you that animal like moveset of an actual outrider/berserk knight. The additional poise is also very welcome.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
couldnt find it anywhere, but this wa does not suffer diminishing returns with insufficient fp. I.e. having no fp does not matter. you still get the full poise and damage. Use that for a min max build
- Anonymous
How well does this perform in PVE? Havent beaten Gael yet, I'm currently using the Executioner's GS but wanna know if this is an upgrade or sidegrade.
- Anonymous
This weapon wouldn't happen to get the same FP siphon buff as The executioner's greatsword, would it? It is an Executioner's sword after all...
- Anonymous
This sword uses titanite scales, not twinkling titanite to upgrade.

can i parry with this equipped? if so what are the keys to do so for keyboard defaults?

I dont understand,It's use Titanite Scales or Twinkling Titanites to upgrades?

If ur using this against a pyro put on a straight sword or any quick weapon or else you’ll probably get punished for that WA. It’s a little too slow. Just make sure to keep in a pyros close range. If they fire surge or demon scar well... good luck. I’m a pyro so I know this

Had this been nerfed? I'm getting 304 AR when two-handed with STR:30 DEX:13

One of, if not THE, greatsword ez mode. I think everyone knows why? On a side note: that REACH! Jesus christ, that reach. It's SO deceptively LONG.

should have played more around with the L1. Farron GS and the double weapons show that there is much potencial in that. That it can give a weapon an unique feeling. Lot of missed potencial in the gs weapons.
Gailmore is pretty solid, as a Refine Claymore fanboy, the slight advantage of strike damage and a great weapon art makes it a decent alternative
