Great Mace is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



Large mace wielded by the knights of the Cathedral of the Deep.

The extremely heavy strike attacks of this weapon are devastating and will break weaker shields with a single blow. Wielding such a weapon will require inhuman strength.

Skill: Perseverance
Anchor weapon in earth to temporarily boost poise. Damage reduced while activated.



Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed. Reinforced with Titanite.
  • At 40 Str a Heavy Great Mace +10 has a 1-handed AR of 573.
  • At 66 Strength, a +10 Heavy-infused Great Mace becomes the third strongest Great Hammer. The second strongest being Smough's Great Hammer and the strongest is  Ledo's Great Hammer with 627 AR.
  • Of the elemental infusions, Lightning is the optimal path in terms of AR. With 40/40 Str./Faith a Lightning Great Mace +10 has 722 AR, two-handed.


Trivia

  • Appears to be an Italian-style of mace, or closely resembles one.

  • Dropped from Cathedral Knights wielding this weapon (easily farmed from the Dancer of the Boreal Valley bonfire, up the ladder and to the left).

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit

      This can be acquired relatively easily within the cathedral once you've unlocked the second door inside the cleansing chapel. You'll have access to two knights wielding it, so long as you're willing to deal with the thralls. It also nets a decent amount of souls over time

        How do I get this? I'm stuck with just the Alright Mace right now, and I'm hoping to get the Excellent Mace before fighting the twin princes, but I just can't find the next Mace upgrade.

          Notably at max upgrade the Dragon Tooth is also 342 damage with B scaling but is also has the built in fire and magic resist and both are buffable. Sure not all B scaling is created equal and this probably gets a couple more points of damage, but I'd go with Dragon Tooth over this for the resistances anyway or the Spiked Mace for higher scaling and the bleed with the spinning combat art.

              Here's a thing I've been doing recently in PvP. Buff the Great Mace with Blessed Weapon and you gain small aoe blasts that spawns with moves that slams the weapon to the ground. Many were not aware of this and even messaged me if I was hacking, despite me being on PS4.
              Most obscure feature to date. Try it out!

                So, is the only reason why Vordt's Hammer is said to be better is that it's one unit lighter and has frost-bite? Because this thing being both buffable AND infusable, while having more damage than Vordt's hammer sounds HUGE... just like the mace itself.

                  Sure, it looks like the Mace after doing some pills to, ah, enlarge its handle, but when fully upgraded and given a Heavy infusement, at 66 Strength you're looking at an AR of 650. 650! The only weapons that surpass that is the ridiculously heavy and mid-game Smough's Great Hammer and the extremely heavy and extremely late game Ledo's Great Hammer. You'll need at least 36 Faith to match this beauty's AR with Morne's Great Hammer, which is quite a bit heavier than the Great Mace. And at 10/10 Int/Faith with the Old King's Great Hammer you'll surpass that number as well, but not only is that unlocked later in the game, its split physical/fire damage will decrease your damage output significantly. Sure it's a drain on your Stamina, but buff up your Endurance and your enemies will end before your Stamina does. Slap the Grass Crest Shield onto your back and you'll be an unstoppable force of nature. A fully charged R2 will flatten just about anything, and even bosses will have a bad time when you start swinging. And if you absolutely, positively NEED to hit a fool use Perseverance to become UNSTOPPABLE and make some pancakes.

                    Do i need to do something to get this?? I've been killing both of the cathedral knights outside of the decons of the deep boss room, and i have gotten the full armor set twice, the sword, and the sheild twice, im going on 3 hours, and 50,000 souls. WTF

                      • This weapon has all: PvE PvP and of course MEMES
                        PvE: most enemies are weak to strike damage, and some bosses in particular. Hyper-armor can make you go past other GH and UGS. It will stagger big enemies, and even stunlock silver knights and enemies like them (if they keep attacking you just need to go for r1, they won't land a hit and die in 3 or 4 strikes)
                        PvP: Good against almost every armor, 2 hit combo will deal more than 1000 AR (no buff 40 str heavy infusion +9). Players will also be scared of it and most of them won't recognize it, as it is not very used, and this might give you a little advantage. You can avoid backstabs by attacking unlocked and using the wide swings to cover sides and back.
                        MEMES: Basically Vordt's on steroids, pair it with entire cathedral knight set and go DEUS VULT the heretics. I started this with some summons that i convinced to copy my set. You saw 3 cathedral knights walking at you. If one landed a hit you were already dead.

                        So basically this basic weapon can kill God in three hits. You'll scare or kill anyone so stupid to bash on you, trust me. My previous lv 80 vordt GH and lothric greatshield and armor build wasn't capable of anything (besides dying), while this build is FUNNY and POWERFUL, basically the dream build i gurantee it!

                          Pros:

                          1. high strike damage, 650 AR with 66 str heavy infused

                          2. WA is amazing and has different purpose compared to small weapons wa

                          3. can be buffed and infused and works very good with lightning infusion, a str - faith buid with 40 - 40 will have 378 lightning damage for a total of 722 AR

                          Cons:

                          1. average moveset

                          2. rather heavy with 18 units

                          Others: a regular GH with standart moveset. Perseverance should be used not to begin a fight, cause 1. it takes long to cast compared to little mace for example and 2. it s a mf GH, it has very good hyper armor so one should not be staggered anyway. Instead WA should be used to combo with 2hr1 and 2hr2 to surprise the opponent, for example 2hr2 - wa - 2hr1 - 2hr1 or 2hr1 - 2hr1 -wa - 2hr1, etc

                          a very good choice for area pve due to high poise damage and damage over all. an average choice for pvp due to mediocre moveset but clever use of WA can make this weapon pretty deadly. a good option for bosses weak to strike damage and many of them are. A powerful weapon that can be used in ng 7 without any issues. it s damage and wa are this weapon top perks that makes it the second best GH in the game, behind all mighty great club, because it also has a average to low stam consumption.

                            Do you want a weapon that makes you laugh when you STAMP THE **** OUT of an enemy to the ground with a fully charged R2? then this is your weapon.

                            let me tell you something more, if you infuse it with lightning and you hit an invader with a fully charged R2 i'm pretty sure you even delete his character from his savefile, yeah, it hits that hard.

                            Perseverance is just too good.

                                infuse that baby with lightning gem, upgrade to +10 and have at least like 40 faith and 40 strenght (you can have more for more damage), and this monster will be the strongest greathammer in the game by far, watch as your enemies get decimated by that big boi, which makes this weapon one of the best for a cleric/faith build, since cleric classes use hammers and greathammers

                                        (easily farmed from the Dancer of the Boreal Valley bonfire, up the ladder and to the left). If you want an easy way to get it early: From Deacons bonfire head back up. break the chair the great mace knight is sitting in, run back and reload the area (chair will remain broken which is key). Go up the stairs, stay to the left (where the giant mud pit is). Hug the banister that goes down the stairs (literally touch it). The great mace knight will aggro, but the greatsword guy won't Now if you want an easy way to kill the turtle: 2 hand large club (mine was at +2 with 22 STR). Wait for him to put his shield up and back step slowly. Run at him and hit him with an R1; it'll break his guard for an easy critical. Bring a fire dagger or something for that. Rinse and repeat. If you die, you'll need to break his chair again

                                          The duration of preservance has been significantly reducedd at some point. Only maximum of two hits can be made within its duration.

                                            Heavy infusion, buff it liberally. Hand out naps to basically everything. The harder bosses and enemies are often weak to strike damage, and you can make it even worse for them by using Lightning Blade. You might be tempted to use a Lightning infusion if you have high faith, but the AR is quite a lot worse. You have to make a choice -- higher than usual for the base weapon damage that you don't need to reapply every 60 seconds, or much higher damage that only lasts for 60 seconds. You could try having two of them for different uses, but it is rare to have a boss fight, for instance, where you get the chance to cast Lightning Blade again.

                                            This weapon is additionally very effective against players, causing stunlocks and dishing out insane damage. It isn't used as often either so, chances are, people won't be able to come up with effective methods of countering it. That won't always happen, because clever invaders/hosts will know it or recognise the moveset as being just the standard GH one, but it can occasionally work in your favour.

                                            Pair with Cathedral Knight helm, Black Iron helm or the Iron Helm for maximum DEUS VULT goodness. Go forth and smite the infidel!

                                              I put a chaos gem on this thing, with a 32 Str, 45/45 Int/Faith, ..... 700 AR one handed, 725 two handed. Im not being on PVP but with this thing im not as fearful of being invaded anymore either.

                                                Such is the power of the Great Mace that it will break weaker shields with a single blow! Attacks against Perseverance will prove fruitless, unless your opponent attacks with the sacred backstab!

                                                    I'm currently having a great deal of fun with this weapon and a very light weight build based on the Dancer's armour set. I carry a little dagger too, which I buff where enemies can see. Then, as they begin the fight thinking I'm some arsehole backstabbing quickstep fool, great mace outta nowhere! Usually the confusion is enough to get a stunlock from the R1, then R2. It's usually all over by that point.

                                                        This hits like a semi-truck with rockets attached to it. I got it yesterday randomly without knowing it existed and upgraded it all the way, it is by far my favorite weapon in the game now.

                                                          60 STR and 60 DEX, a Sharp Great Mace has higher damage than Heavy and even Refined, you guys try to figure that***** out.

                                                          Heavy infusion has STR scaling rate of B, Refined has D/D scaling rate in both STR and DEX, which turned out to be same as a B scaling, while Sharp has a E in STR scaling and a B in DEX.

                                                          • I edited the pure physical damage values of +0 and +10 but I think I fukked up at +10 infused ones since I assumed it was double the base damage of +0 infused like the regular path. Regular path is now correct though.

                                                                Cosplay as a cathedral knight, Put heavy gem to +10, get attunement to 20, have tears of denial with blessed weapon, have (atleast) 30 faith, use life ring +3 ring of favor +3 and ring of steel protection +3 (forth ring i recommend sun princess ring), use chime or tailsman, infuse +10 cathedral shield with blessed gem, have 66 strength 40 endurance and (atleast) 30 hp. (don't forget about vitality :3) BAM!! best catherdal knight cosplay and it's hella good O' and my ds3 character name is Docter of Astora or TUT The Pharaoh(gamer tag).

                                                                        What happened to this thing? I remember it being absolute junk. Now it's "the best" Perseverance Great Hammer.

                                                                        66 STR, +10 Heavy Infusion lands you 650 AR two-handing. With resins, the two-handed AR can get up to 745. +5 Leo's Great Hammer gets up to 732 AR with 66 STR, two-handing, and the WA buff. Granted Leo's is straight AR, so it will be more powerful on average, but Leo's weighs 10 units more than the Great Mace.

                                                                        But what about the Dragontooth? At +5 it gets 642 AR at 66 STR/two-handing/can be buffed to 737 AR with resins/has Perseverance/has a passive that raises magic & fire absorption by 10. And it only weighs 3 units more than the Great Mace.

                                                                        Well, here's something the stat list DOESN'T tell you about the Great Hammers: Stamina efficiency.

                                                                        At 40 Endurance + Ring of Favor: One bar of stamina gets you 5 swings with the Great Mace.

                                                                        At 40 Endurance + Ring of Favor: One bar of stamina gets you 4 swings with the Dragontooth.

                                                                        And the +3 Ring of Favor doesn't change anything. The Great Mace still has higher AR, lower weight, and significantly less stamina consumption than the Dragontooth. Even Leo's Great Hammer struggles to beat the resin-buffed DPS of the Great Mace.

                                                                        The Great Mace is definitely the choice Great Hammer for Perseverance consideration.

                                                                            At 55 str has just over 620 ar heavy-infused when two-handed(think its 623, idk at work rn). Killed gael on ng+8 with this sl150. Great mace has always been my guilty pleasure and now its among the highest ar strength weapons in the game. Don't forget its also stylish as hell.

                                                                              Best 2 handed raw with minimum strength (22) and buffed. 432 base AR with OPerseverance means you'll put put a ton of unparriable damage for not a huge amount of stat investment to wield it.

                                                                                  I think their reasoning for the low scaling is the high base damage. Most builds won't benefit from it being raw but it is definitely better for one that does.

                                                                                        Just wanted to note that spawning at Lothric Castle bonfire and dropping down from the balcony would be a faster way to farm that cathedral knight. Alternatively if you have Consumed King Oceiros bonfire that would be even faster.

                                                                                            Weapons with poor scaling can do well with Raw infusion, seems logical. Raw gets 432 which is quite an number if you ask me, since the requirement is only 32 I can see this thing hitting like a truck on low level builds (60-80).
