Irina's Ashes

Tower Key

Irina of Carim is an NPC in Dark Souls 3. She can teach and sell Miracles to your character in a certain area of the game.

Irina of Carim Information

  • Can be killed.
  • Sells Miracles, see Items Sold below.
  • Teaches the "Prayer" gesture.
  • Accepts all divine tomes, but her questline will vary accordingly.
    • Purchasing any Dark Miracles from her causes her to fall into darkness, and be taken away by Eygon of Carim, to be protected from you.
    • Purchasing ALL Dark Miracles causes her to stop being a vendor, and initiates a gloomy dialogue. (If you speak with her while equipping Morne's Gauntlets, she will have more things to say.)
    • Purchasing ALL Holy Miracles instead (without buying any dark ones) turns her into a Fire Keeper.

Questline

  1. Start: You can find Irina in a cell near the entrance to the Road of Sacrifices in the Undead Settlement. She can be reached by dropping down the cliff on the left of Eygon of Carim (via the small gouge in the rocks) or purchasing the Grave Key from the Shrine Handmaiden for 1500 souls (requires Mortician's Ashes) and using it to open the door halfway through the sewer tunnel with the rats and fog inside it near the Cliff Underside bonfire. Irina's Location

  2. Once you free her and accept her services, she will relocate to Firelink Shrine. If you approach Blacksmith Andre and head down the stairs to the right, she can be found at the end of the hallway.

  3. Dark Path: If you give her the Londor Braille Divine Tome or the Deep Braille Divine Tome, and subsequently purchase any Dark Miracle  from her, Eygon will take her from you. They can then be found just after Iudex Gundyr's bonfire, and Eygon will be hostile. If you kill him, he drops Morne's Great Hammer and the Moaning Shield. If you cannot find her after killing Eygon warp out and back and she will be where Eygon was standing. Talk to her twice, and she will return to her spot in Firelink Shrine.

    1. If you didn't buy ALL of the Dark Miracles  you can still access her inventory and buy regular Miracles. Her dark questline will not progress until all Dark Miracles have been purchased. Buying a single Dark Miracle locks you into the dark questline and you will have to wait until the next playthrough to attempt her "good" ending if you have purchased any of these.

    2. If you purchase ALL of the Dark Miracles  from her, she will no longer sell you Miracles and you will only be able to speak with her. You can still finish the dark version of her questline but you will need to equip Morne's Gauntlets.
NOTE! If you wait to rescue Irina until you have all of the tomes, you can skip conflict with Eygon by giving all dark tomes and purchase the all of her miracles at once. If this happens, Eygon will not remove Irina from Firelink Shrine and subsequently, he will not become hostile. This will prevent the player from obtaining Eygon's equipment and will allow the player to skip ahead to step #3 without conflict (this NOTE needs testing in various game stages and progressions, this could be a bug).

    3. When returned to her usual spot Irina after Eygon has been defeated, she will not sell anything and will only beg the character to touch her. If the player does this without Morne's Gauntlets, Irina will not recognize the touch and will ask again for someone to touch her; if the player is wearing the gauntlets, Irina will believe that you are Eygon and will ask you to kill her, as Eygon promised to do so. Killing her drops her ashes which can be used to purchase her miracles from the Shrine Handmaiden.

  4. Light Path: If you instead purchase ALL the other Miracles without purchasing any Dark Miracles, she will become a Fire Keeper, and move to the bottom of the Tower outside of Firelink (the one where Sword Master was standing). If you had given her Londor Braille Divine Tome or the Deep Braille Divine Tome but didn't purchase any Dark Miracles, these will be lying next to her on the ground. You can then give them to Karla to purchase all the Dark Miracles. After this happens, Irina will be able to level you up, much like the Fire Keeper inside the Shrine.

Dialogue

First encounter (Undead Settlement)

Ahh, who's there?
Is someone there, anyone?
The dark surrounds me, nibbles at my flesh.
Little creatures, they never stop biting.
So please, hold out your hand, and touch me..."

Selecting "Touch"

Ahh, yes, there you are, so close indeed.
Then I am not entirely alone, just yet.
Praise the merciful gods above... (gesture)
Oh, forgive me.
I am Irina of Carim.
I came to this land so that I might be a Fire Keeper.
Your touch has freed me from the darkness.  You are a Champion, then?
I am weak, and unfit to tend the flames.
But if it would not trouble you, might I enter into your service, instead?"

If you "Decline" her service

Ahh, yes, of course, I understand.
Even so, I thank you deeply.  For your touch.
I will never forget it, not ever."

[Talk] "Oh, sweet Champion. You still wish to converse?
Don't worry about me. I've long dealt in dark. It is my calling."

If you "Accept her service"

Oh, thank you, sweet Champion.
I shall take my vows.
I, Irina of Carim, solemnly swear to serve you."

Second encounter (Firelink Shrine)

Oh, Champion of Ash.  Welcome back.
I was not meant to be a Fire Keeper, but I am honoured to serve you beside the Bonfire.
The gods are ever-merciful.  My gratitude lies with them, and with you.
I am yours now.  Your wish is my command."

"Talk" command

You know, in my home of Carim, I was a nun.
I would be pleased to share the tales of miracles with you.
Although to be honest, I only know a few.
But if I had a divine tome, I could tell you many tales and more.
Ahh, only I cannot see…
Terribly sorry, but you'll have to find me a Divine Tome in braille."

When given Divine Tome of Carim or Lothric

Ahh, you've brought me a braille Divine Tome.
Now I can tell tales of new miracles.
Tales of the greater miracles can be quite the epics...
What fun we will have."

When given Deep or Londor Divine Tome

Oh, what's this...
Champion of Ash, this Divine Tome is forbidden...
These are dark tales that lurk deep within men... These stories would not please you...
Of course, if you insist, I will read them for you.
Only, ahh, ahh, they frighten me so.
The little creatures that nibble at me in the darkness..."

When greeted

Ahh, Champion of Ash, welcome back. Do you wish to hear a tale? You only have to ask."

When greeted (after buying a dark miracle from her)

Ahh, ahh, sweet Champion.  Where have you been?
Please, your touch…
The little creatures, how they nip and bite…"

Upon leaving

Have a pleasant journey, Champion of Ash.
I pray for your safety."

Upon leaving (after buying a dark miracle from her)

Ahh, sweet Champion.  Leaving so soon?
Please, come back in good time.
I am frightened.  Of the dark that gnaws away at me."

Upon leaving (after buying all non-dark miracles from her)

Thank you ever so much, sweet Champion.
May your solemn duty conclude in triumph."

After she moves to the tower

Oh, sweet Champion of Ash.
Let souls be your strength..."

"Talk" command (after "rescuing" her from Eygon)

Ahh, ahh, please, someone, touch me.
The dark, surrounds me, nibbles at my flesh.
Little creatures, they never stop biting.
So please, hold out your hand, and touch me..."

Selecting "Touch" (after "rescuing" her from Eygon)

Ohh, is there no one near to touch me?
Keep these things from eating away at me."

Selecting "Touch" (after "rescuing" her from Eygon and wearing Morne's Gauntlets)

Oh, you again, touch me, one last time.
And kill me, as you promised you would."

Upon death

What have you done, sweet champion of ash
I only wanted to..."

Upon death (after touching while wearing Morne's Gauntlets)

Ohh...A Knight of Carim...
...is always true to his word..."

Trivia

  • Her name is Slavic/Eastern-European form of Greek name  Ειρηνη (Eirene), derived from a word meaning "peace." Ειρηνη was the name of the Greek goddess who personified peace. Also, it was borne by several early Christian saints and is popular among Eastern Christians.
  • Voiced by Sarah Beck Mather, who also voiced Lucatiel of Mirrah in Dark Souls II.
  • Irina's feeling of darkness eating her away like insects corresponds to the item description of Fire Keeper's Soul in Dark Souls 1
"A Fire Keeper's soul is a draw for humanity, and held within their bosoms, below just a thin layer of skin, are swarms of humanity that writhe and squirm."
  • If you kill her while wearing the Morne set, her death dialogue will be different.
  • Upon completing her light questline, she becomes a fully-fledged firekeeper. While some theories claim she isn't a firekeeper due to the fact that she does not have her eyes removed like the primary firekeeper, she does not have her sight due to being blind and therefore meets the required conditions to become a firekeeper.

For the trivia section, the Firekeeper *does* have eyes, she did not have them removed, neither did the Firekeepers from the previous games.

you CAN get eygon's hammer and shield after you bought all dark and light miracles from irina. Head to the cell where you first found Irina, Eygon can be seen lying at the open cell door belly down.

I love the voice acting on her greeting once she becomes a Fire Keeper, so frail and tortured-sounding, as if she's barely holding it together. In typical Dark Souls fashion things never end well, and though she dreamed of it all her life it seems being a Fire Keeper wasn't what she thought it would be.

Her quest ends in a very odd way mechanically speaking. I wonder if there was something else planned that was cut since she ends up as a redundant firekeeper in the same map as the regular Firekeeper (but inconveniently out of the way)? Well at least it's better than deep insects infesting her and she begging to be mercy killed at least.

Fun fact: Killing her, a blind nun who did nothing but try to help you, does NOT count as a sin. So maybe she was secretly evil.

It's lame that doing her "good" questline has such a boring and sad ending to it. She's way out of the way to be useful. Plus she just sits over there in the dark among a bunch of fire keeper corpses. Like she knows she's useless and redundant, so she's just gonna chill there and wait to die.

                  • Anonymous

the only difference she has with the firekeeper is that she is cheaper to level up with, don't believe me? go check her required souls and compare it to the firekeeper's required souls, or you could compare the left over souls you have after leveling, still useless since she's annoying to get to.

Is it impossible to progress her quest without doing part of the yuria questline? Because I progressed to far and the guy that gives u dark sigil died so I'm locked out of that I think as a result I can't buy the 4th tome from yuria unless there's another way?

So I still can't figure out how to reach her. I have the cell key and went through it's path in the sewer but couldn't find anything to reach her. Cell next to hammer dude won't open from this side...

As i see it so far.
Give both dark tomes to Irina and buy all dark miracles.
Kill Egon to get his armor and Hammer.
Is quite a bit more of a profitable ending,
then her Light ending for a 2nd firekeeper.

It is not very clear, but as Eygon pages says, if you kill Abyss Watchers and Dragonslayer Armour, Eygon will appear dead at Irina's original cell, so if you learn a Dark Miracle from Irina when Eygon is already dead because of your progress in history, Irina would not move and only will ask to be touched. I wanted to fight Eygon and now is dead :( This can be concluded from the different character pages but I think is relevant for her quest, so would be nice to be added here.

You need the divine time of Lothric as well for her light path. This fails to mention that. Three tomes to give her, of all light or good miracles and you need to buy them all for her to become a fire keeper.

                              • Anonymous

Giving her the eyes of a fire keeper should unlock an alternate ending. Summoning her instead of regular fire keeper. Like the frenzied fire ending in elden ring.

I feel like in the light path although she becomes a fire keeper she looses her sanity. In the dark path she keeps her sanity but is in a tortured state so is there really any good ending here?

She's the only NPC in the game that can be actually saved and doesn't die at the end of her questline. But really, even when she turned into a firekeeper, why something fells off? Like she's felling worse than before...

this isn't the good ending I wanted (╥_╥)

I gave her one of tales and accidentally clicked LMB instead of E, I cant belive, i didnt want to kill any NPCs
(i accidentally also killed onion knight)

This isn't mentioned in the Dialogue section, when you have bought dark miracles from her and select "Talk" she says "Now I can tell you tales of miracles, forever and ever..."

girl reads one scary story and is never the same. imagine reading goosebumps and demanding to be executed

I didn't even know there was a questline to her, she just sits in firelink shrine and I haven't bought a single miracle from her nor given her a tome

                                            • Anonymous

To those who complain about her complaining with dark miracles: your right. Doing the good side of the quest is so much more relieving.

Me preparing to R2 directly into Irina's stupid ****ing face so I can get the tower key: (her existance is pointless unless you are doing a miracle build)

                                                • Anonymous

After the first time I bought dark miracles from her, it was the last playthrough I did so. I always rescue Karla first before doing anything with the Deep or Londor tomes.

Why does she have to moan so much? Quickly skipping through her dialog makes me think I'm watching something dirty.

                                                    • Anonymous

i think my game broke cuz the first playthrough i bought dark miracles and eygon was still alive and he did nothing, second playthrough eygon did come and i killed him, but i could still buy from irina and i didn't have the option of killing her? third went nice, she became fire keeper

                                                      • Like most other quests in this game, there's almost no indication whatsoever as to what's happening. When you buy all her light miracles and no dark miracles, you come back to the Firelink Shrine and she's just gone. No explanation. She never says a word to you about: 'Oh by the way, I feel like I'm ready to become a Firekeeper now that I've recited every miracle to you.' Nah man, she just disappears. And then she's in an area where, at that point in the game, you would never have any reason to go to. If you didn't have a guide to tell you she was there, you probably wouldn't even look there! When you do get there and find her, she doesn't say anything about becoming a Fire Keeper. She just is one.

                                                        • Anonymous

I alt-tabbed and clicked on the game to go back to playing and accidentally smacked her with my Black Knight Sword +5 before completing *either* of her endings (and before Soul of Cinder)... welp, guess my Cleric playthrough will have to get the good line then.

                                                          • Anonymous

She actually has more dialogue if you get to the Soul of Cinder without buying any dark miracles.

                                                            "Godspeed, Champion of Ash."
"May your solemn duty conclude in triumph."

                                                            • Anonymous

Really? Buying just a single dark miracle locks you in? Now I have to wait until NG+? That just feels scummy. At least with Yoel and the "draw out true strength" option, he's giving you levels for seemingly "free," which shouldn't sit right with anyone. He's kinda like a street dealer saying "Hey kid, want some levels?" But with Irina, the dark miracles are just another spell you buy, and, to my knowledge, no other merchant in the game has a "buy this, I'll do this" sort of feature. Doesn't seem like a route you can do without careful hindsight/looking it up on the wiki.

When I was going to do the end of fire ending I went to see her and she told me that she needed me to hold her hand because she was scared of the dark

Call me a simp or what ever but if someone was as hopelessly terrified as her against the dying of the world I think it’s only the right thing to make sure she’s okay

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

you know maybe its a good thing she cant see I don't think she would like what has happened to lothric and the world poor thing

                                                                              • So I'm just going to put down a bunch of random facts and thoughts here in the hopes someone might be able to piece them together for a theory.

Untended Graves, Champion Gundyr, too late, dead Fire Keeper, coiled sword broken, no bonfire. Irina, failed Fire Keeper, blind, Shrine location is same place we find Eyes of a Fire Keeper.

Becomes a "Fire Keeper" after purchasing all good miracles from her, but consumed by darkness after all dark miracles are bought. Eyes of a Fire Keeper, reveal a world without light, world consumed by darkness. Irina, though blind, still has her eyes in our Firelink.

Her ashes mention a "Great Betrayal," similar to the title of "Grand Betrayal" given to the End of Fire. Could she and/or Eygon be complicit in the end of fire?

From all of this, I propose three timelines for Irina:

One: She makes it to the Untended Graves and awaits her Champion of Ash, Gundyr, but he doesn't arrive. From Prisoner's Chain, we can gather that he was restrained, and I believe the power that restrained him did so to bring about the End of Fire in the Untended Graves we find. They killed Fire Keeper Irina, broke the coiled sword, and loaded the area with powerful enemies to prevent any ash from rising and linking the fire.

Two: Our timeline. Irina is unable to become a Fire Keeper, for whatever reason. Eygon is content to let her rot in a cell, as it's "safe" for her there, but we go around him and rescue her anyway. Through our actions on the light path, Irina can become a Fire Keeper, but the circumstances are confusing. First, we buy all the light miracles from her, and when we leave and return, she's gone. If we look around, we find her in the base of the Firelink tower, all alone in the dark and surrounded by Fire Keeper corpses. She's able to channel souls and level us up now, but seems… absent. She has two lines, and none of them have any emotion or personality. In addition, how did she make it to the tower? She's blind, and that's quite a pilgrimage to make for a blind person. Perhaps she asked someone like Andre for help, and he led her there, but if we don't tangle others into the story, maybe she knew the way because she's been there before. She's got a Tower Key, which is very specifically meant for that exact location, but she was never able to become a Fire Keeper. Could her own Champion of Ash, perhaps, have come too late, as in the olden tale of Gundyr? Rather than leave her here, at an empty and flameless shrine, could Eygon have chosen to force her into the path of Great Betrayal, leaving the flame to die?

And did we, by virtue of taking pity on Irina, redeem her?

Just some thoughts I had at 4 AM.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Oh, you again, touch me, one last time.
And kill me, as you promised you would."

That’s depressing as **** do multiple reasons

                                                                                  • Anonymous

i know shes blind, but does she notice that in her new location (behind sword master) shes sitting around a bunch of corpses?

                                                                                    • Anonymous

So which d-bag hit her with the Gnaw spell. Look at the description of Gnaw and see what it does. Sounds exactly like the pain she’s going through.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I gave her at least one dark tome. Eygon showed up in the shrine and said his piece. Later on I was able to summon him for the DSA boss fight. After buying all the miracles, Irina is stuck in the dialogue about the bugs eating her. Went to her old cell and Eygon was there dead, looted his gear. Decided to put her out of her misery, she said thanks...

                                                                                        • Anonymous

So Eygon was unable to turn her into a fire keeper with whatever (probably horrifying) means he's aware of, but she transforms (seems unburdened, like a different person) after we find the braille tomes for her, which basically contain stories of the old gods that she loved to recite long before she went on this journey with Eygon. Feels like it parallels how some undead go hollow when they lose their reason for living?

                                                                                          • Anonymous

So I was curious to see her as a "fire keeper" and bought all her miracles despite being a melee guy. And she seems... out of it, as in "not even in the same zip code as you" out of it. She doesn't talk normally, doesn't acknowledge Eygon's gone and probably killing himself. It's weird. I can't find any lore reasons for this, did I miss something or did the Team just give up on finishing her sidequest?

                                                                                            • Anonymous

It is unclear if, after her 'light' path, she becomes a fire keeper or merely able to level you with souls. Though she is surrounded by the bodies of fire keepers, she keeps her sight. Perhaps she's still a step away from a full-fledge fire keeper.

                                                                                              > She keeps her sight

                                                                                              She's blind, you daft twat

Do the dark ending on the first play through. Get the sad ending over with so you can get Morne's armor. It's actually really good armor. Also, the Eygon fight is pretty fun. That's what I did mainly because I didn't know about the light vs dark endings for her so I naturally gave her every tome and tried to learn every miracle regardless of dark or light, but I'm glad I did. On NG+ you can then do the light ending. Holding onto the dark tomes until you get Karla again won't matter because you already have the spells from last PT.

Just make sure you don't kill her before you get the final light tome in the dragon bridge area. That's what I did and had to wait until the end of NG+ to learn bountiful light. I respec'd to a Paladin build during TRC DLC too. Still worth it because I love the build, but it would've been nice to have bountiful light sooner. Thank god for Yorshka's chime.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

I was not meant to be a Fire Keeper, but I am honoured to serve you beside the Bonfire."

And then the next time you come back to the shrine, she's a fire keeper... I guess she changes her mind and bucks up while you're away?

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

She didn't have her sight when she meets the player character. She comments that she needs us to find tomes in braille because she can't see as well as needing the player to reach out and touch her and when we do she knows where we are.

I value her dreams over this, and call me weak, or call me a goody two shoes, I won't change how I think about her. However he did not level up 5 times w yoel and we killed the abyss watchers so yuria never spawns. He tells me Irina is still there and eygon never took her away despite him buying the dark miracles. What triggers eygon to take her? Is the quest stuck forever because the londor tome is not accessible to him this playthru?

DS is usually great at rewarding you for following the "good" storylines. Not this one, feel free to give her londor tomb at low level and embrace the Dark Blade! also some very sinister lines from bringing in the ashes.
