Long Sword is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



A balanced, widely-used standard straight sword. Inflicts reliable standard damage, as well as high thrust damage.

Skill: Stance
While in stance, use normal attack to break a foe's guard from below, and strong attack to slash upwards with a forward lunge. 

Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Buffed and Infused.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • Excellent move set, low stat requirements, and good scaling with elemental infusions make this a great PvP weapon for any caster build.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

      Why does the Damage Table not display the parenthesis/scaling value? It displays the Scaling but not the numerical end result. A Refined +10 weapon deals 203 (???) damage with B/B Strength/Dexterity scaling? Why is the parenthesis value excluded?

          Unless it's the Broadsword table, this Longsword table isn't fully updated.
          I checked the Fire and Deep infusions of both the Longsword and the Broadsword because I thought the higher damage made the Broadsword better with a split damage infusion.
          It does. Obviously both are useful.
          Except, one of these is not updated. Both swords are very very close in stats, but here, there's like 20-30 AR of difference, and if you check other more regulated tables on reddit, you'll find they're consistent with the game.

          I'm pretty sure I remember a nerf to straight swords a long time ago. Weird that it's not edited here yet.

            I think this makes this weapon one of the best 1h swords in the game followed by the Short Sword for infusions and by the Lothric Knight Sword for Dark infusion and buffs.

              I played with a lot of different builds and weapons, including magic. I tried a lot of things in both PvE and PvP, I finally came to the conclusion this weapon is the my favorite.

              It is good in every situation, it is a jack of all trade (and slightly king in all to be honest). This is a weapon that could be difficult to use at its full potential for an inexperienced player, but you can do anything with it if you are seasoned enough.
              For PvE, again as a seasoned player, you will have little to no difficulty to defeat every boss/enemy in the game, you can play with a small shield to parry or a medium shield if you like. It even works with a greatshield (but you'll look kind of funky).

              In PvP this weapon is incredibly good but requires great mastering. It has really fast R1s allowing to outspeed players with medium-low poise and stun them before their hit lands. If you are facing a tank build you can use the speed of this weapon to roll-poke around the shield. If you are facing a caster, again roll-poking can be good, just as the running R1 attack which has a deceptively wide range.
              This weapon may look easy to parry, however if you are facing a parry god (parry spammer even), do the following: Roll. Poke. The roll-poke attack (roll + R1) is extremely difficult to parry as the parry frame is minuscule (after ranking up most covenants to max rank, I've never been parried on this attack). If the hits land, you can safely go for a regular R1 since your opponent cannot move until the second hit.
              Against a parry player you can also use the weapon art which may seem crappy at first but can be used to vary your attacks and confuse your opponent on the parrying frame.

              If you are facing someone who rolls like their is no tomorrow fear not my friend, longsword has your back. Put some Carthus Rouge on it, the hits won't do damage through the roll but the bleed will build up (just like frostbite or poison) and you will still land some serious damage.

              In case you are facing a fast UGS user things can be tricky, personally I'd try to bait a hit, roll once, roll twice since they tend to believe you won't roll through the second hit, (if you feel the enemy is quite good you can try a third roll to avoid a funky third hit spam) and then poke or try a backstab, rince and repeat.

              To be honest I can't really think of a weapon that can handle so many different situations this well. Definitely my god-tier weapon.

                After a 1200 hours killed into this game, using every damned weapon and builds I decided to throw back to my DS roots: Cosplaying and Astoran Knight with a Longsword.

                While it's a bit weird playing with a small weapon like this again, I found out that no matter how big a weapon is, how much elemental damage they do and can do sick combos/weapon arts, still no other weapon be as damn effective as a straight sword. Especially this one, the most balanced one of all.
                It can be used with ANY build. Has great scalings infused with everything. Very fast and easy to abuse moveset. Inbuild guardbreak WA.
                Best to use a shield with it. Classic Sword-And-Board can still stand up to everything.
                You can't go wrong with this "basic weapon".
                No matter how many other weapons are out there, this little piece of steel will always be my favourite one of all.

                  Using MugenMonkey to test out some damage values for a +10 Longsword, so people have the info for reference. All of these will use 40 points pumped into any of Str/Dex/Int/Fth/Lck to try to be as efficient as they can. Unless mentioned otherwise, all stats are at 10, as per a Deprived starting character. All ARs are one-handed.

                  36 Str/24 Dex:
                  Base - 369

                  30 Str/30 Dex:

                    Hi!
                    I have a question for this weapon and my build. I'm currently running a faith build and I like using this weapon.
                    If I imbue the longsword with Lightning I get an AR of about 470. If I imbue it with Blessed I get an AR of about 390.
                    Now because Lightning is technically "Split" Damage would Blessed do more actual Damage?

                          This weapon is reliable like it says. It works out, its not difficult to build around, its not flashy but whatever it works great.

                            This weapon has always been a total beast. A 100% protection weapon art shield makes it one of the most powerful loadouts in the game with a ton of versatility. Use this and get good with it and you'll have little trouble with basically anyone.

                              I have been using straight swords since Dark Souls 1. Apparently the Long sword is top tier in PvP (Im not going to complain).
                              However, I seem to have no trouble beating spell casters and light/medium weapon users in PvP but when it comes to the heavy weapon guys Im getting crushed (sometimes literally). Im not ranting or anything like that but If anyone has any tips for PvP vs Heavy weapon guys with a long sword - I would greatly appreciate it!
                              I've tried hit and run tactics, tried parrying (not a good idea vs ultra weapons etc). Tried fishing for backstabs (harder to get in DS3 it appears). The only success Ive had is if I can intimidate them into panic rolls etc (which good players wont do). Also when I got lucky with backstabs when I started out (am I missing a technique here to be consistent with them?). Tried perfect shielding hits but stamina takes a brutal beating (40 endurance). Tried timing rolls but smart players will vary and delay swings.
                              Anyone got any experience dealing with heavy weapon guys using a long sword? I'd appreciate any approaches to it and strategies dealing with them.
                              Just wanna git gudder ya know?

                                The S scaling with blessed infusion is actually worse than the A rank STR scaling on heavy infusion. The scaling rank means a % bonus to the base demage. C=50%, B=75%, A=100% S=130+% bonus with ~50 statpoints.

                                  Lohtric knight sword is better than longsword( it does slightly less dmg than longsword ) because it has more range,critical modifier,stack better with Leo ring and is better in terms of fashion souls

                                    At 40 STR/40 DEX/40 END it has an AR of 428 and manages 9 R1 swings. The Dark Sword has exactly the same AR but manages only 8 swings with no clear moveset to break defense like the Longswords L2/R1. The Dark Sword is not worth it anymore.
