Old Moonlight is a Sorcery in Dark Souls 3. It is part of The Ringed City. To cast a Sorcery you must use a Staff or Special Weapon that can cast Sorceries

A memory of an old sword found deep within Midir.
This sorcery uses souls to grant form to the thought, and attack with it.

Attacks are coupled with lightwaves, and sustaining the stance before attacking increases their speed and potency.

The sword is named after moonlight, but it is slightly different than the one fashioned of the paledrake Seath. Perhaps it is rooted in an older memory, from not long after the Beginning.

Notes and Tips

  • Inflicts (spell buff x 1.25) for the blade and (spell buff x 1.5) for the projectile, (spell buff x 2.35) when charged. Compare this to Soul Greatsword's (spell buff x 2).
  • This spell is a reference to the original moonlight sword from King's Field.
  • Though similar to Soul Greatsword, its base damage is lower and its reach shorter. This is compensated for by the ability to hold the spell and the projectile it shoots.
  • The spell can be charged by holding down the casting button indefinitely.
    • The sword glows brighter and the beam becomes more powerful with a longer range.
    • While holding down the casting button you can roll out of the casting at any time.
  • Both the sword and the projectile have a hitbox, so hitting with both will deal full damage.
  • The sword produced by this spell uses a model taken directly from King's Field 2 (US), nearly untouched, save for the blade being slightly extended.
  • The way the player holds the sword while casting it looks similar to how Ludwig holds it in Bloodborne.
  • Can be used with Heysel Pick to cancel attacks similar to the RKSS.
  • Combos with the Heysel pick's R1 at high casting speeds.

I just today learned you can charge this spell after reading it's description again. Might give it a try. Looks amazing!

You can see how they were experimenting with Charged spells and flashier weapon arts in Ringed City DLC as a preparation for Elden Ring

Why are people thinking this is the true MLGS from DS1? The description VERY BLATANTLY states otherwise.

I think this spell opens up a lot of questions in terms of lore, but it further connects the moon and sorcery to the archdragons specifically. Notice how the darkmoon and moon are two completely distinct objects (a concept that's been reused in Elden Ring) with the former being a manifestation of Gwyndolin's power, while the other is exactly the same in appearance to the real world moon as is visible from Archdragon Peak. So the ties between the "true" moon and the archdragons are undeniable. The word beginning is also never used outside of this afaik, so it probably isn't referring to the Ancient Dragon War, but the beginning of the age of ancients itself.

The real dilemma is, this or soul gs? This one has same cast speed and combo properties with heysel pick + having projectile and charge hit but having only the 75% power of soul gs uncharged

            • Anonymous

What damage type does it do? I'm assuming magic, but the icon backround looks unique, and Midir does dark.

So, I personally think that From’s games exist in layers of realities, where some things “leak” into other layers. In King’s Field, you get the Moonlight Sword from a black dragon, which is why Midir and Old Moonlight are a reference to that. I also believe that the Moonlight Greatsword, having been around for so long, is immensely powerful, and has been around for a very, VERY long time, hence why it tends to drive people like Ludwig or Oceiros insane. Or maybe not. These games have a tendency to be vague and confusing lol

This spell is actually very effective in pvp. Most people forget it has a projectile and they just try to roll out of melee range. I use it as a Spear of the Church to good effect. Something that's happened a few times, I throw crystal hail for area control and the enemy will rush me, so I pull out this as a kind of threat and I can either actually trade blows with it or more often catch them when they try to run away from it.

Don't worry this sorcery does not count towards the achievement anyone like the guy who commented below me can rest easy. You only need base Dark Souls 3 stuff for all the achievements they didn't add any achievement related things with the DLCs.

                    • Anonymous

I transposed Midir's soul for the actual sword instead of this, now I'm massively regretting it cause I decided to get all the achievements, and that means to get the last sorcery I need to start a NG++ and finish like 70% of the ringed city and then fight this guy all over again.... ugh.

Pro Tip, don't transpose your lord souls right away, keep em until the end of the game where you can decide if you wanna 100% it or not.

10/10 for the visuals, very pretty. It's pretty shite other than that, could have been a buff spell or something.

theory midir is a dumbass who got his ass kicked by benhart using his fake gigachad sword and midir thought it was the real one cause he stupid as hell

                          • Anonymous

According to the lore this is the MEMORY of an old sword found WITHIN Midir. So does that mean someone fought Midir with the physical version of this sword? So a previous knight or sorceror tried to fight Midir and maybe ended up being eaten with the sword or managing to stab Midir with the sword? This could explain Midir’s torn wings or previous damages.

                            • Anonymous

This isn't Midir's Dark Laser! Why is this even a thing you can transpose from Midir? Why are either of them a thing? Frayed Blade was wielded by Halflight and we already got the MLGS from another thrashy dragon. You're telling me we couldn't get boss gear that actually makes sense to be transposed from Midir's soul? It's like they had those 2 items left over from their ideas and just threw it into the big optional dragon's loot pool

                              • I like this spell, but having Mlgs and css already in my kit it kinda feels redundant. It can out damage single hit css and for the mp it's not bad. But for me at least if I wanted to not waist mp I will just use my mlgs, and if I want high damage css has shorter casts and can be done from a safe distance at least as far as pve is concerned. Haven't really tried it on bosses though.

What's the damage of the spell though? I like reading all this interesting lore about it but I don't wanna go all the way to midir just to find soul greatsword had a higher damage modifier

                                  • Anonymous

I wish we had the actual sword and it would end up being the true mlg versus the base game mlg where it’s pure magic damage and has a more unique move set but I’ll settle for this spell

wtf does that description mean? is it a mistranslation? I thought Seath was the creator or sorcery and the moonlight gs

                                      • Anonymous

"While holding down the casting button you can roll out of the casting at any time." WHY it is not like this for other spells, man, sometimes death is only because casting time is so long that you see that you need to roll out, but you can't, while casting.

                                        • Anonymous

It seems the last line is a bit of a meta-reference to From Software itself, because King's Field was their first title. So the Moonlight Sword was created not long after the beginning of From as a game development company.

Obviously, no sorcery is good when you only spam 1 of them, Mixing spells make you a good sorcerer. A spell can can be used in melee trade, roll catch and can even cancel when charging for range battle! Praise the Old Moonlight!

                                            • Anonymous

This spell is such a disaster when it comes to hit a lock-on target. It always prioritizes the legs for some reason and it always hits the ground instead of the target. If you're not decent at free aiming then this spell is really hard to hit in pvp.

                                              • Anonymous

Dual hitboxes can have some interesting results. Most strength builds don't expect to be out-traded by a melee spell

                                                • Anonymous

Did anyone notice that this is the only spell in the game with a completely different scroll? Even the description reads:The sword is named after moonlight, but it is slightly different than the one fashioned of the paledrake Seath. Perhaps it is rooted in an older memory, from not long after the Beginning. It does not have the "dark/forbidden" scroll type nor the normal sorcery scroll type. I find this really interesting. It probably is the oldest spell in the game.

                                                  • "it's not that bad IF..." It can be good IF..." IF you do that then it can be really usefull!" Lets be honest, comments under op or at least usefull spells are usually written in a different tone. So what I get from here is it looks good. And that's it.

                                                    • Anonymous

The pose and appearance of it is a clear reference to the Bloodborne ver. and Ludwig. Will be using in my cosplay

                                                      • Anonymous

Fairly sure this spell is probably the strongest spell in Dark Souls 3 (sorcerer wise) if you can fully charge and land both the hit + moonlight wave

                                                        • Anonymous

Well this makes the King's Field games part of the SoulsBorne universe. Specifically as prequels to Dark Souls. So, King's Field -> Demon Souls -> Dark Souls -> Bloodborne

                                                          • Anonymous

When charged, the spell hits for ~1800 damage on Father Ariandel, if you hit BOTH the blade and the projectile. In the same conditions, Great Heavy Soul Arrow hits for ~1000.

                                                            • Anonymous

King's Field was certainly the first, but I think the spell is actually referring to Demon's Souls. "The Beginning" is the theme played when the Monumental tells the player about the state of the world.

                                                              • Anonymous

Just a heads up, the animation when you release the spell has you dip your catalyst of choice, and will screw up the projectile if you're, say, aiming up stairs. It's a cool spell, but as I'm sure anyone who considered switching out Soul Greatsword for it will tell you, the difference in the range is painfully noticeable. Where Soul Greatsword is great for sideways roll catching and crowd control in general, Old Moonlight is decent for those few seconds before and after you engage an opponent at close quarters, forcing them to roll to slip it on the way in or catch them as they try to roll out (either with the beam or blade itself). Some other juicy info for ya, From Software really hit that BEAUTIFUL sweet spot (which was so badly needed for Lifehunt Scythe, RIP) in casting time (with the requisite Dex/Sage's Ring obv.) given the spell's sheer versatility and, when both the beam and blade hit, raw power. It can also charged up really quickly and sometimes can snipe a panicking opponent or two, albeit the release can be bit slow especially since charging it essentially telegraphs in big moonlight letters, "HERE COMES THE PAIN TRAIN, ARE YOU READY? CAUSE HERE IT COMES, BETTER WATCH OUT." But, THANK GWYN, you can roll out of it. TL:DR Bit of a jack-of-all-trades, swiss army knife (limited range Soul Greatsword-Soul Arrow, charged weaker Soul Spear) that can do decent work in PvE if you're strapped for attunement slots, and has very niche usefulness in PvP pre- post-close quarters engagement.

                                                                • Anonymous

This spell along with Heysel Pick is some of the most cheesy fun to play around with. As long as you are running Sage Ring +2 or have an offhand Saint-tree Bellvine you can combo a two-handed R1 into Old Moonlight. Sometimes if you are fast enough you can get the combo to go R1 into Old Moonlight, then another R1 into Old Moonlight. Just be wary that you turn into parry bait after they figure out the combo.

                                                                  • Anonymous

The Moonlight blade might be a reference to another From Software game, Armored Core.

Moonlight blade is traditionally a melee weapon (beam saber) with a aqua color with the added capability of shooting out.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Little advice with this spell, if you think you’ll hit your target all the time then you’re in for a rude awakening. This spell is great to use when they roll towards you or if you are under protection of Crystal or regular soul mass! Also after using this spell, try going in with another hit of your regular weapon as it sometimes throws people off guard.

I’m waiting for the person in the comments to say “If you look closely enough, this sword resembles a key! Obviously a kingdom hearts reference, maybe even a Hello Kitty Island Adventure reference!” (Btw, Hello Kitty Island Adventure IS the new Darker Souls!)

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          Awesome spell.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

It's the last sorcery I need for the sorcery achievement and I'd rather not have to go through the DLC again after accidentally changing Midir's soul into the sword. PSN: AdrianTheDork505

It punishes great hammer users if they miss a combo they are *****ed if their stanima is negative. With my low attunement high int character this spell is perfect I can cancel it if I need to and the damage is enough to get me through a session without running out of mp(18 attumnet here) this amd crystal dragon breath are my go to I land crystal dragon breath more often than this spell however. Point being if you have high int low attunement this spell is a must have.

                                                                                            • Hits like a truck if you hit right, which is difficult though. Soul Greatsword has better range and is better to hit through objects with.

Though you can charge this and release or cancel at will, which makes it better, for the same FP cost.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I wish that if you had the moonlight greatsword this spell would have a secret effect, it'd be great if it'd add a buff to the weapon for 45 seconds that made it so each swing would release a weaker form of the moonlight wave and the charged moonlight wave would have a bigger animation and would hit like a truck. If you want to make it even better, you could make it so that you could charge the moonlight blast while using this buff and you'd have the choice to either release the blast or it'd stay on your sword, as a glow, and give you some magic damage added to your sword.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

It looks nothing like the moonlight sword in king's field. Maybe its just referencing the age before the Age of Fire when dragons and old gods ruled.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

just an idea...but maybe make it 4 times bigger? or even more? A spell with this history and such a boss we have to beat for it should be "a bit" more effective. Effective as having a room clearing magic super blade.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

From the looks of it, it seems this model is based off the King's Field Moonlight Sword. Even the description seems to point towards this.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

This spell works really well in 3v3 IF no one is paying attention to you. I rarely have the time to charge and hit someone with it, but when I do, it does ridiculous damage. For brawls and smaller pvp and pve, I've have better success with soul great sword, but old moonlight is too cool looking to not use.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

ok lads, all you do is equip a talisman with force and have a catalyst in your other hand.

cast force with the unfaltering prayer poise and quickly switch to this spell and cast it with the catalyst holding it.

then you will be able to walk around with the moonlight charged up and have the yellow glow of hyper armor until you let go of the spell.

let go when someone comes up to attack you so you can trade.

                                                                                                          dis spell gud ye :^)

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

I wouldn't have a problem with it if you didn't easily get knocked out of the animation for it. You charge it and if a gentle autumn wind blows by with some ash in it....or if it's a little throwing knife to hit you.....Poof! It vaporizes. If it wasn't an optional boss then okay, fair enough, but I want something good to come out from the last dragon we fight in the series. I guess that's the DS series for you though right? Have them give you one last sucker punch, one last blood pressure raising moment that leaves you saying... "No way! That was total BS!" And why is that...? Because we love this game.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

In comparison to soul greatsword, this spell seems to be better for single target purposes. Hitting the blade swipe and projectile yield more damage than soul greatsword will, however soul greatsword will do more damage if only the swipe or only the projectile hit. I believe the swipe has a wider arc on soul greatsword as well, judging from the visuals.

As far as the charged version of this is concerned, the charged projectile can outdamage soul greatsword on it's own, although it's still better to hit with the swipe to for maximum damage. Easier to use the charged version in PvE though.

For PvP, the projectile might be an ok thing for roll catching if they go directly backwards, but I haven't really tested it out. Seems like it might be better to just use soul greatsword so that you can just go for the swipe and not worry about also lining up the projectile properly.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                                soul greatsword of judgement!
I feel like this spell is more of a "back off" move. It costs the same fp as soul greatsword and has the interesting feature of firing on releasing the button. While people can just roll through it, they can do that with basically every other sorcery so might as well waste minimal fp while doing it.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could cast this while holding the Moonlight Greatsword? Like- as a catalyst?

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

After getting this spell from Midir, I tried using it in about 20 duels in the hollow arena. Just for comparsion, I could land the slow and predictable crystal souls spear about once every two duels, but I NEVER hit somebody with the charged version of this. That's not only because the very obvious animation, but also because this spell, especially the charged version, has some hitbox problems. Despite the charged projectile looking huge, its hitbox is actually about the same size of the uncharged version, so it's much smaller than it looks and most of all doesn't go nearly as far as it looks. Also the projectile cannot rollcatch, as its short size and fast movement speed make it really easy to roll through it. If you want to use this in pvp I wouldn't recommend charging it, unless you think your opponent is very incautious. It's a shame that such a good looking and hard to obtain spell is so unreliable :T

Long story short: In my opinion the spell looks great, deals great damage and has rather low FP cost, but its deceptively small hitbox makes it almost useless in pvp. I think it will only be usable in From extends its hitbox so that it can rollcatch reliably.

                                                                                                                    • It's a fancy spell that is totally not worth the pain and suffering you go through to get it.
