Onikiri and Ubadachi is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



The hunters known as the King's Black Hands wielded paired weapons. These belonged to Kamui, who looked after the prince.

Kamui brought Onikiri with him to the Undead Settlement, where he forged Ubadachi, and was finally prepared to join the ranks of the royal hunters.

Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed.
  • Upgrades with Titanite.
  • Makes for good Quality and Hollow builds.
  • Strangely, Heavy infusion is viable on these weapons. In contrast, Sharp infusion isn't as good if your strength stat is really low.
  • Quick softcaps and base stats comparisons between str/dex heavy/sharp:
    • 13/25 sharp (base reqs) = 325 AR
    • 13/40 sharp (15 levels) = 379 AR
    • 40/25 heavy (27 levels) = 361 AR
    • 40/40 normal (42 levels) = 406 AR (sharp is 2 AR behind, heavy is same as last one)
    • 13/67 sharp (42 levels) = 415 AR
    • Going higher, even if strength is equal to dex, sharp is ahead as the dex scaling doesn't cap very hard.
    • I.e. there's little reason to level strength, and certainly no reason to go heavy.
  • Onikiri and Ubadachi literally means "ogre cutter" (鬼切) and "old lady sword" (姥断), respectively. Due to the typical size of tachi swords, the Ubadachi is likely the longer of these two swords.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

      I look up some stuff in Japanese and find out that Onikiri might be a reference to a real sword called "Onikiri Yasutsuna" (I also found this being mentioned in here https://kamikouryaku.net/darksouls3/?%E9%AC%BC%E5%88%87%E3%81%A8%E5%A7%A5%E6%96%AD) and since the length is similar, I think it's safe to assume that the longer one is indeed Onikiri and the shorter kodachi is Ubadachi.

        The weapon art/skill still goes when you fall. This means you can attack mid air. Might be cool for knocking people off ladders and such. Just wanted to let anyone know who might be interested. Give us some cool midair kills!

            "Onikiri and Ubadachi literally means "ogre cutter" (鬼切) and "old lady sword" (姥断), respectively. Due to the typical size of tachi swords, the Ubadachi is likely the longer of these two swords." ↑ this is wrong 鬼(oni) is demon and 切る means to cut; だから、 この刀が"Demon Slayer"っていうんだ 「姥」という漢字って御祖母さんの能面だという漢字だ。"断" means judgement/ severance. therefore, "Old Woman's face of judgement"

              I was all hyped up trying a hollow build with these weapons and was sorely disappointed when I found out that in both pvp and pve they're mediocre at best. The weapon art is stupidly useless most of the time since the character will just fly right over your opponent, stunning them yet dealing no damage at all, all the while seeming to have less range than even the uchigatana and higher stamina consumption. Only good thing about it is the r1 into l1 true combo, which isn't saying much because the damage output is barely different to a normal r1-r1. Don't bother with the l1 move set because it's too slow to be of any use. 5/10 Terrible service. Still salty after all the time I've put into building this character.

                This weapon used to be everywhere in pvp, used in luck/bleed build buffed with carthus rouge. Ever since the nerf this weapon pretty much disappeared only to be seen from time to time. It is worth noting that even without bleed build the L1 L1 or R1-L1 combo does around 500-700 at 40 dex, even more so when buffed. The R1 attack has a long range and excels at roll catching. It is also recommanded to not focus the weapon around it's weapon art as people used to with bleed build, the R1-L1 combo is much safer and can land easily.

                  Onikiri and Ubadachi 101 - The following pertains only to physical infusions. As I have no experience with Dark, Deep, Lightning, ect. or even Raw infusion for that matter when it comes to this weapon. The scaling of O&U is misleading. As C scaling in both STR and DEX makes it seem like a quality weapon ("quality weapon" means a weapon for builds that have proportionate STR and DEX, usually 40 or 60 in each). While O&U can be used effectively with a quality build, it's best when Sharp infused. Unless you are an absurdly high soul level, O&U is a DEX weapon. O&U should be dual wielded (two-handed) almost exclusively. With the only exception being when you take out a parry tool in your offhand. O&U is incredibly versatile. You can let out a quick striking standard R1 then follow it up with an L1. R1 into L1 being a true combo (a series of hits that are inescapable in PVP every time if done correctly... and without lag). You should almost never R1 into another R1, as R1 into L1 does more damage with using much more stamina. When fighting multiple opponents, however, you might not have time to do the full R1, L1 combo without getting hit by their teammate. You can also L1 into another L1 for extra damage, also a true combo. Although, this is much more difficult to land as the windup of the L1 is much slower than the standard R1. The R2 of this weapon is very similar to the one-handed R2 of a straight sword and should therefore be used similarly. After each of the aforementioned combos, an R2 follow-up should be attempted. It hits fairly frequently. Try holding down R2 briefly to catch your opponent right after they finish rolling, when needed. The R2, of course, can also be effective all on its own. The standard katana running R1 is very useful with this weapon and should be used often. Especially since it's used with the longer of the two blades. It's much better than the running L1, which should almost never be used. It's windup is much too long. The L1 rolling attack is superior to the R1 rolling attack, so use L1 after rolling. O&U's weapon art, Onislayer, is amazing, but shouldn't be used super often. A lot of its power comes from its unpredictability. You aren't very vulnerable when you are executing an Onislyer, but you are when you finish if you miss or your opponent has a teammate. The physics of the Onislayer are counterintuitive. It looks like a jump, but it's not. Your character will still follow the elevation of the ground beneith him/her while moving through the air. The two main strengths of the weapon art are its hyper armor (the ability to continue an attack even while being hit) and the fact it can't be parried. I'm not saying it's impossible to be knocked out of the weapon art, I'm just saying I never have been. The Onislayer is pretty cartoony in general. Remember to bust out an Onislayer when you see your opponent take out their parry tool. Because O&U is so versatile, the 8.5 units of weight aren't too big of a deal when it comes to equipment load management. As you don't really need too many other weapons in your other equipment slots outside parrying and perseverance tools. Because of the R1 running attack, the extremely useful R2 (both by itself and the after combo follow-ups), and the stabbing motion of one of the blades during the second stage L1, the Leo Ring pairs very nicely with O&U. This weapons biggest downside is its stamina usage. 40 Endurance with a Ring of Favor +3 is strongly recommended. Chloranthy Ring +3 and popping Green Blossoms is also a good idea. Because of the high stamina usage and the long duration of O&U's better combos, this weapon doesn't do too great against teams. O&U is a great weapon choice if you love the one-handed move set of katanas and you value versatility.

                    I've recently restarted to play and will be going for a dex build and was wondering if this is a good weapon for that build and if so if there is any good dex weapons to use before I get this? I started as a mercenary so i still have my twin blades to use if need be.

                      "Tachi" actually just means "sword." Case is point, the shorter one would be a kodachi, or small tachi, as in it's still a type of tachi. So there's no reason to assume Ubadachi is the longer one just going by the same. Japanese short swords were generally backup weapons for the samurai or carried by merchant or peasant class people for self defense, and it would have been unconventional for a warrior to carry a kodachi or wakizashi as their main sword. So it would make more sense if the guy started out with a long sword and then forged the short one to complete the set. If anything the name Onikiri suggests a more powerful blade while Ubadachi may be a sort of tongue-in-cheek reference to its size, like it's a small sword even an old woman would wield.
