2000 1000 Road of Sacrifices Orbeck's Ashes

Orbeck of Vinheim is an NPC in Dark Souls 3.

Orbeck's Information

Location

You can find Orbeck of Vinheim in the Road of Sacrifices, on the second floor of the room leading to the Crystal Sage boss-fight.  He will relocate to Firelink Shrine after talking to him if you have 10 Intelligence.

  • If you lack points in Intelligence, you can use the Scholar Ring to temporarily raise your Intelligence above 10, as he does not continue to check after he has moved to the Shrine.

Directions

From the Crucifixion Woods bonfire, follow the path until you reach the ruins, then turn right and cross the swamp until you reach the narrow set of stairs.  Climb the steps and proceed into the ruins.  Once you make it inside, continue forward, then turn left and follow the path leading deeper into the building.  When you reach the intersection with a single enemy wielding a spear and a shield, keep going straight until you find yourself on a rocky outcropping.  There will be a somewhat-obscured path to the right that leads up a flight of stairs towards Orbeck.

Orbeck's Questline

Once Orbeck is at Firelink Shrine, if Yuria is also there, she will ask you to "deal" with him and will reward you with the Morion Blade if you bring her his Ashes. Don't do this if you wish to continue giving him Scrolls to unlock new spells. Orbeck's ashes can be given to Yuria after he dies of natural causes, and she will still reward you with the weapon.

  1. Speak with him after buying three Sorceries, giving him one Scroll, and being any Non-Sorcerer starting class he will thank you and give you the Young Dragon Ring.
  2. After purchasing Farron Flashsword, Pestilent MistAural Decoy, and Spook he will ask you if you like gimmicks and will give you Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring, along with the Silent Ally gesture.
  3. He will disappear permanently from the game if:
    • You defeat any six bosses after recruiting him without giving him a single scroll for study (in earlier patches, he would leave after defeating Abyss Watchers).
    • Only one scroll is required to prevent him from leaving. If he disappears from the game, you will not be able to get his ashes, and won't be able to complete Yuria of Londor's optional quest. Both the Golden Scroll and Sage's Scroll can be acquired in Farron Keep.
  4. Once all spells are purchased from him, he will acknowledge you as a friend and well-trained sorcerer. He will then leave Firelink Shrine, and you will be able to summon him for the Lothric, Younger Prince boss fight, just outside the large gate leading to the boss fog. You will also need to have defeated the Curse-Rotted Greatwood to see his summon sign.
  5. After defeating Lothric, Younger Prince, Orbeck's corpse will show up sitting at a table at the Grand Archives, on the upper floor where the four sorcery-using candlehead enemies are. From his corpse, his ashes can be looted.
    • If you do not purchase all his spells before this boss fight, he will remain in the Firelink Shrine and will not die. However, in NG+ and beyond, if you talk to him after giving him all four scrolls and having learned all of his spells in a prior playthrough, his departure will be triggered. Note that learned scrolls may be sold, so if you want Orbeck to remain in the Shrine, you might want to sell a spell that is of little use to you (not tested if this will work, needs confirmation).
    • If you do not proceed directly to the next NG, his corpse can be found at the said location even if you did not summon him for the boss fight.

Dialogue

First encounter

Well, this is unexpected. I don't often have visitors.
What do you want?
This is my study that you've happened upon.
If you haven't any business, I've reading to get back to."

(Nothing) "Yes, I see.
On your way, then.
This is my study, and I've plenty of reading to do."

(Talk) "Oh, enough of you, already.
Do you have business with me?"

(Ask to learn sorceries) "How intriguing.
Very well.
Indeed, I am a sorcerer. With plenty to share.
However...
What champion demands service without recompense?
Clearly you are not that sort of man/woman.
So, you will make me a promise.
That in exchange for my teaching, you will bring me knowledge.
In the form of scrolls detailing sorcery's secrets.
Well? Can you assure me of this?"

(Make no promise) "I can respect an honest man/woman.
But I've already put in more than my fair share of gratuitous service.
Be on your way, then.
Though you're welcome back if you change your mind."

(Talk) "Have you changed your mind?
If I am to teach you, you are to fetch me knowledge.
In the form of scrolls detailing the secrets of sorcery.
Can you make this promise?"

(Make a promise) "Very well.
You are no fool. I take it you understand the weight of a promise.
I am Orbeck of Vinheim.
Unkindled one, I shall teach you sorceries.
We will learn together, it shall be like our very own school."

[Ask to learn sorceries with insufficient intelligence]

You'd better not. Sorcery is not for everyone.
And should never be forced. You have your own methods.
Sorcery need not be one of them. Don't let it bother you.
Be on your way, then.
You're Unkindled. Shouldn't you get back to your duty?"

(Talk) "Oh, I thought you'd already given up.
Well, nothing has changed. You're not inclined for sorcery.
It is either a natural fit, or no fit at all.
Be on your way, then.
You're Unkindled. Souldn't you get back to your duty?"

(Talk after 10 int) "Well, well... There's something different bout you, isn't there?
Very well. (the rest is the same as if you had 10 int the first time you talked)

Upon arriving at Firelink Shrine

Oh, you're back, then.
Again, I'm Orbeck of Vinheim, here to teach you sorceries.Let us begin with the basics.
The ideal sorcerer bears the twin faces of the dragon...
...Oh you could at least act as if you are paying attention!"

Talk

I don't mean to seem overbearing, but have you forgotten?
In exchange for my sorceries, you are to bring me knowledge.
In the form of scrolls detailing the secrets of sorcery.
I hope you're not one to break a promise."

Greeting

Back again, I see.
Perfect timing, too. I'm in need of a diversion."

Leaving

Promise to stay safe."

When Crystal Sage has been defeated (not sure)

It is folly to claim lives recklessly, friend. Don not be tempted.
No matter the victim's stature, every killing has a consequence.
Even as I bloodied my hands, I never realised this simple truth.
Hmph. There I was, the very definition of a fool…"

When given Sage's scroll

Oh, my… This is stupendous.
Then the Undead Legion of Farron possesses sorceries quite unknown.
Thank you, for upholding your end of the bargain.
I doubt I ever would have made this discovery alone.
Now, let us unravel the thing, so you may put these new sorceries to use."

When given Golden scroll

Oh, my… This is stupendous.
It's from Oolacile, an ancient land of golden sorceries.
Not even the Dragon School possesses such a long-lost scroll.
What would the xanthous scholars say, with their ridiculous headwear.
They would simply slaver over this find."

When given Logan's scroll

Oh, my! You've made quite the discovery!
This is a scroll of the prodigious Big Hat Logan.
A masterful sorcerer, long missed in Vinheim.
And now, we have his scroll, right here in my very hands."

When given Crystal Scroll

Unfathomable.
This is a crystal sorcery, created by the pale dragon, thought only to exist in legend...
I am ever grateful to you. This is truly sublime.
I am afraid this is a debt I cannot repay, only...
I will be sure to unravel it for you. Just a moment."

Young Dragon Ring

Oh, I have something for you.
You're a fine sorcerer now, no mistake.
You should have something to prove it.
Go on. If I'm giving something away, you'd better well take it." (gift)

Silent Ally & Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring

How do you like gimmicks, friend?
This is a sign, a cipher employed by sorcerers who use quietude to their advantage. (gifts)
With this, you can be sure to tell friend from foe from your very first encounter.
It's a very old practice at this point...
...but one that you deserve to know."

Talk after ring and gesture

In Vinheim, I was an assassin.
A sorcerer only in name, a killer for hire.
What a fool I was, thinking one day I would learn real sorceries.
When I became Undead, I was exiled from the school.
But here I am, now, exploring the depths of sorcery.
All thanks to you, I might add.

After purchasing all scrolls

You are no ordinary man/woman (dependent on character's gender).
All of these sorceries, and you've mastered every one.
If this where the Dragon School, you'd be,...
..well, overtly despised, and banished from the place.
Well I suppose it's time I packed my bag.
I'd hate to see our agreement end sourly.
Better left tucked away as a pleasant memory."

Leaving after purchasing all scrolls

Promise to stay safe.
It's been nice running our own little school."

Greeting after purchasing all scrolls

Oh, what is it? Forgot something?"

Greeting after purchasing all scrolls (Third time and on)

Oh, what is it? Forgot something?
That would be quite like you."

Upon attacking

What is this about?"

"Is that how it is?" (first encounter)

Upon aggroing

Seems it's too late. Then, there is only one thing left to do.
With regret, I will end this here and now!"

"Then we are thorugh and done.
Enjoy your long sleep!" (first encounter)

Upon killing you

Farewell. We had a nice little school going."

"Gods, this business never did agree with me..." (first encounter)

Upon death

But, why...
Is that all I'm worth?"

"Ive lost...my touch..." (first encounter)

Notes & Trivia

  • If you are unable to meet Orbeck's intelligence requirement to get him back to Firelink Shrine, you can play the entire game and he will remain in his study at the Road of Sacrifices. You can then use the Scholar Ring you find later in the game to artificially boost your intelligence and return him to the Shrine. Be sure to immediately return and hand over any scrolls you have. It is unsure when he leaves after all bosses have already been defeated.
  • You don't have to summon him for the Twin Princes fight to get his ashes.
  • If his corpse doesn't appear at the Grand Archives, teleport back to Firelink Shrine and make sure that he left, then go back and his ashes should be there.
  • Orbeck confesses to being an assassin for Vinheim Dragon School. This lends credence to the theory that Griggs of Vinheim from Dark Souls I is also an assassin as they wear the same black robes associated with sorcerer assassins.

Some info on the wiki seems wrong.

I'm in ng+ and learned all his sorceries in the prior playthrough (which triggered him to move to the Grand Archives as expected). BUT contrary to what's written on the wiki here, he didn't disappear after I just gave him all the scrolls and fought the Lothric princes. Even if I had all his sorceries in my possession already.
In my ng+ playthrough right here, I had to buy all his sorceries again for him to show up in the Grand Archives.

maybe fromsoft updated this or maybe my game glitched (don't think so).

He tells me "Oh forgot something? That would be quite like you" even if I haven't purchased all the scrolls yet (only have given him one so far as well)

Dammit I knew I missed someone! I was wondering what I was supposed to do with all these scrolls. Something told me I didn't explore too well in some of the earlier fights but damn it's kinda harsh to place Sorcerers merchants so deep into the 3rd level of the game. It's not as wild as Bloodbornes hoops that need to be jumped through for an effective "arcane" build but still I didn't think there were recruitable merchants past the undead settlement and then I got surprised by the Carim Nun. Aww well it's my first playthrough and I've been ignoring a lot of the quest. I just needed to google what the scrolls were for since I could never figure it out despite already being 30+ hours deep in my first run.

If u give him a bunch of scrolls, kill him when Yuria tells you to and haven't bought all his spells they're lost forever as she does not get his spells in her inventory.

            • Anonymous

The dialogue, 'When Crystal Sage has been defeated (not sure)' is actually after obtaining 5 dark sigils in game and Yuria appearing - it alludes to her later request for the player to assassinate Orbeck.

              • Anonymous

To get Orbeck's summon sign to appear for the Lothric, Younger Prince boss fight, you have to give him all 4 scrolls, buy all of his spells and have him tell you he is leaving. You then need to leave Firelink shrine and come back to see that he is gone. This has to be done on every ng cycle.

                • I thought I would have been out of luck with this considering he disappears after Abyss Watchers, and has other conditions that cause him to become permanently unavailable. Wasn't the case for me because I never even found him in the first place, so the quest never even started and I was able to start his quest at level 94.

Still can't believe that you can be fully locked out of the majority of sorceries because of a gameplay error, even though I'm doing pure strength that's still just a brutal consequence.

                  • Anonymous

I think it's really F.ing stupid he leaves if you don't give him a scroll right away. I never even seen him at firelink after getting him and i now want to change my states to give Sorcery a try because a staff gives 20% extra souls and I find out he is just gone and no possible way to get Sorceries now good job from soft for doing something so stupid and pointless you think I would get use to it by now but it somehow surprises me in literally every game they do stupid things just to make things more irritating

                    • Anonymous

the ashes did not appear for me, after doing everything correctly, because i did not leave The area. Reloading and resting at bonfire does not help, you have to travel to Firelink shrine (or any other area (not tested)), for the ashes to spawn (given you did everything correctly)

                      • Anonymous

Re-purchasing his sorceries even if you bought them in a previous playthrough, *is* required to get him to leave the shrine. Then you can find his ashes after Lothric, Younger Prince fight, in the archives area with the 4 candle sorcerers and big tables. He didn't leave the shrine until I re-purchased his spells.

"All of these sorceries, and you've mastered every one.

..well, overtly despised, and banished from the place." Big Hat Logan? This could be why the school could have sent Griggs to kill him or keep an eye on him, likely to keep the schools magics in control and locked away. Orbeck however is different, he became an assassin only to one day become a sorcerer, while being an assassin was his job, it's just a stepping stone to him.

My second most favorite NPC in the game, with Siegward the first. Came off as rude & all business at first but became one of the best bros that gives out life lessons.

Can confirm this dunce leaves if you dont give him a scroll before teleporting to the dlc areas... guess ill greet him in NG+7... Ill get his achievement some day.

Either he's bugged, or there is something this page doesn't cover. I bought every sorcery, talked to him, he left, but his summon sign is nowhere to be found.

This game has some seriously random connections that cause severe consequences. How in the name of Gwyn was I supposed to know that I shouldn’t defeat abyss watchers? God damn.

i ****yng hate that in ds3, just WHY? WHY THE DAMM NPCs disappear if we do something wrong or forgot to do something??? this is so anoying we lost a whole NG because of this bullshit

Somehow managed to get him to stay in his original place up until Twin Princes door. I went back and Me and the homie did a crash course in becoming best pals, he moved in, i bought all his stuff, he called me a true G and then moved out and we 1-shot Twin Princes together. I miss you bro.

Requirement for him to stay in firelink shrine: give him 1 magic scroll.

Some of the comments: "ThIs iS tOo HaAaAaArRrRdDd!!!"

                                          • To this day I still think this was the stupidest place questline in the whole of dark souls. If you were a first time player and either did the abyss watchers before sages, didnt jump to that ledge or even made it and then held off giving a book, he just peaces out forever. If you were a mage, that's like half your arsenal of the whole game gone.

might just be a rendering trick, but when i am talking to Cornyx the pyromancy tutor, if i pan my camera over to orbeck, he moves, as if he is trying to conceal that he is spying on me while i talk to a different magic tutor. could also just be that his model is unloaded and he's returning to a default position to save resources. this is on ps4.

Um orbecks summon sign does NOT appear anywhere near the twin princes. If it is supposed to then you need to update the page with the proper requirements that need to be met for it to show.

Do I need to buy all of his spells in order for him to leave the shrine? Even after learning some of them elsewhere? Screw it, what's another 14500 souls anyway?

I had several sorceries in my storage box, and then I opened the first door to the twin princes before going back to shrine to buy the last spell. Orbeck had some dialogue as though I bought all spells, but he never left shrine and his sign did not appear at princes. Hm.

I purchased all of his spells after beating Lorian and Lothric and he still went off to the Archives, so I guess you don't have to do it before then. On a side note, buying one copy of each spell isn't enough - he can sell you multiple copies of certain sorceries and you have to to buy all of them until there's not a single one left highlighted.

                                                                • Anonymous

In two run throughs now, I have given him the Sage's Scroll, and both times he didn't accept it. He gave me some dialogue which I didn't really take much notice of. And also the scroll then disappears totally from the game.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

But before killing the boss I have bought every spell he sells. So buying every spell he sells without giving him a scroll can prevent him to vanish I suppose?

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • They really should have made it so he would go to firelink without needing 10int, and still have him require scrolls to stay. That way the people who dont use magic can do his quest or get morion blade from yuria(a weapon pure quality builds would want). Some quest guidelines are far too strict in dark souls 3. I guess its trade off for having respec though.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Because I bought the spells and more needed for Young Dragon Ring, and Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring, but he hasn't said or given me anything or said anything besides the basic dialogue.

Then I went to Shrine Handmaid to sell souls. When I rushed back to him, he says "Oh, what is it? Forgot something?" See if you want to add this to his dialogue...

Took out Crystal Sage, Abyss Watchers, Deacons, Wolnir and Sulivayn, and he was still there. Went and got the Golden Scroll, and all good. I had skipped a lot of things, not taken out the Stray demon, and Greyrat is still asking to do his first outing. Maybe skipping enough things and he doesn't leave. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Because of this I’m salty and ds3 was my least favorite in the series.
