If FromSoft really think this is a "puzzle", then they are so far up their own asses its ridiculous. A puzzle is supposed to be something you can figure out based on deduction and clues. This garbage is an easter egg that you can only "solve" by pure chance, from using an item that almost nobody ever uses. I'd like to see a list of how many players have solved this joke on their own without any googling or datamining. I'll bet its less than 10.

This is an idiotic secret, you can't even call it a puzzle or a riddle because those have reasonable ways to figure out the answer, but there's nothing given to you here that would let you actually reason this out. There's no clues to let you suspect that using a white branch in a particular random spot would have a chance to turn you into a humanity phantom when those *haven't even been in this game* and there certainly aren't any of them around. And it's only a *chance*, meaning that even if you somehow stumble across the answer either randomly or by exhaustion, you can still not get it just purely by randomness. This is like a pixel hunt 'puzzle' where the pixel only even has a 1/3 chance to do anything when you click on it. It's like a switch puzzle where the 'switch' is a blank wall that doesn't even give you any feedback that interacting with it does anything until the third time. The souls series is pretty amazing overall, but it really gets too far up its own ass sometimes and forgets the 'but fair' part of the 'hard but fair' design maxim.

          • I did some testing and:
I'm pretty sure that to turn into a ghost you just have to be looking towards black crystals.
So as some people here were previously saying, just come down the stairs, there are some crystals on the right, you don't have to be close, you just have to be looking at them. Use a white branch and you will be transformed first time. It is even possible to transform without aggroing the locust. I usually hug the left wall and use the white branch where the stairs end, maybe one step further. Works every time.

Open gate shortcut. Run out the door next to bonfire to swamp. Kill the big hydralisk at bottom. Run out into swamp a bit, not far enough to agro. Use branches or chameleon repeatedly without moving until you turn into glowing white humanity. It took me 5 branches.

If someone is still struggling to figure out the solution, just follow my lead, 1)go to to water in the swamp 2)unequip ALL your armor and 3) use the chameleon spell or a young white branch.
It worked first try doing this, hope it helps cheers!!!

                • Unfortunately, this page cannot be edited even by registered users. Use Chameleon or the White Branches until you turn into a humanity (black ghost with a white outline), not necessarily a certain number of times. I doubt you need to actually be in the swamp, but that is one way to do it.

Didn't work for me. Did it in the swamp water and it kept changing between the grave stone and the big gemstone thing wasted all my branches on this.

How in the hell would you figure this out on your own, unless you have a habit of casting chameleon on yourself not just once but twice on every single different piece of terrain in every single area of the game?

Literally took me 16 times before I finally made it to the inscription without being forced out of chameleon by the small drop you need to go down in order to get there

Cast spook and hidden body before dropping down the ledge. Then run past the first ringed knight to find the summoner, who will immediately spot you. Kill him quickly and then trace back to take on the knights one at a time. That'll be the end of your summoning problems.

I played other souls games, but I would never figure this one out by myself, I only could think "show your humanity" as not being hollowed.
