Uchigatana is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

A unique katana characterized by the fine craftsmanship of an eastern land where it was forged.

The finely-sharpened blade cuts flesh like butter and causes bleeding, but breaks easily as a result.

Skill: Hold
Assume a holding stance to rapidly execute a lunging slash with a normal attack, or a deflecting parry with the strong attack.

Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed.
  • Upgraded with Titanite.
  • Earliest Katana you can get in the game. Due to its early game availability, players who chose the Mercenary class will be able to use this weapon right away without leveling up as long as they two-hand it.
  • It uses slightly less stamina than all other katanas in the game except Darkdrift.

Location/Where to Find

  • Dropped by Sword Master just outside Firelink Shrine. Should the Sword Master fall off the edge, simply reload the area and the Uchigatana will be where he fell.

Having the lowest Strengh req in the game makes this a pretty darn good one-hand option for a pyromancer. Especially if you level Dex for Max cast speed. Which uh, you ought to.

Fully charged r2 + 2nd uncharged r2 + wa r1 + a little investment in luck = 85% hp gone for the other guy. The charged r2 truecombos with the 2nd and wa r1 is a fantastic rollcatcher.

r1 spammers don't have enough skill to pull off this fatality.

You can release lock on with the parry and manual angle the parry into people's attacks. Has been useful against people dead angling.

          • Anonymous

In addition to fashion, this is very useful as an early-game bleed weapon. Bleeds the f*** out of everything up until Pontiff just on it's own.

            • Anonymous

It said that katanas have the least amount of parry frames but it feels easier to parry with them, is it the hit boxes of it? Or is it my imagination.

              • Anonymous

TIL: the WA attack can duck behind lothric spear enemies. Great combo as 2handing doesnt make the weapon bounce on their shield

Upgrading the Chaos Uchigatana rn and thought I’d say that at chaos +8 is when intelligence and faith scaling go from C to B and the strength scaling is still at E.

                  • Anonymous

Uchigatana, like the Claymore and Longsword, is one of those staple Dark Souls weapons that has retained its use throughout the entire series. You could run through the entire game with this in hand and do fine - which is great, since you can acquire this weapon before you even hit the High Wall.

Where the Longsword is your staple sword'n'board weapon and the Claymore is your first Strength-style weapon, the Uchi is more of your first two-handed Dex choice. It has speed, decent damage, bleed, the ability to parry without needing a shield, reasonable stamina use, works with weapon buffs and resins, needs no finicky builds, and has a forward motion to it that gives just a bit of reach. A weapon for both beginners and masters.

I recently just came back to the game to actually try and finish it over quarantine and this weapon is great. A lot of the comments hate on the weapons but its really good if your a patient fighter. start as deprived and infuse your club with the fire gem gift to smack the boss then level what you need to handle the weapon properly. this weapon is still doing amazingly and i just beat the deacons. might switch to black blade but this is doing me very well at +6 and 25dex

I’ll sing you a true song of Dex Build the kid, I’ll sing of some desperate deeds that he did. Way out in Lothric in a sad chord, when a mans only chance was his heavy Greatsword. When dex build the kid was a very young lad, in old Anor Londo, he went to the bad.Way out in the cathedral with a uchi in his hand, at Soul Level 12 he did kill his first man. There Mound-Makers that play lutes and sing, songs about Dex Build, their boy Spirit king, ere his young noobhood, had reached its sad end, with a notch on his katana for 21 men. It was on a sad night when poor Dex build died. He said to his friends, I’m not satisfied. 21 men I have put my sword through. Greataxe str build must make 22. It was at night when Dex met his fate. The Darkmoon was watching, the hour was late. Struck down by str build that once was his friend, Dex Builds young life had come to an end

                          • I'm a relatively new player, I don't really know much about the actual move frame data and whatnot but I've been having moments where I kind of but not really hyper armor through an attack when I do the R1 WA (probably more of a hitbox thing since the character ducks when doing the attack?). Just want to know if anyone can give a deeper explanation?

I'm a newbie but should i increase both Stre and Dex to use this wep more effectively or One or the other Rn Im at 16 Stre 19 Dex and 14 End so i get 4 attacks out of it and 1 roll in chain secession. Any Advice i'm sorry

I have hoped that uchi would have a polished blade with hamon like it did in the second game. Oh well at least we still have ubadachi.

Not the best choice of weapon for my 10 equip load run through the game, but it served me well enough with the parry ability, and solid damage output, with a nice little boost off of Flynn's Ring. The innate bleed cannot be ignored, really helps cut down certain enemies much faster.

                                  • Anonymous

Note for newbies struggling against the uchi in early-game PvP: the range on the R1s is deceptive, and the slashes come forward faster than most other swords. Its two-handed running attacks are great to parry, though, and katana users do love to overuse it... the animation has one of the game's more visibly obvious indicators for when you should press the parry button -- watch for the elbow to bend (even if the distance seems too far). Works for all parry tools.

                                    • Anonymous

parry isn't bad. You have a lot more frames than you think you do. At least that's what I've found while playing these days. Slash is good for closing a gap against a PVP heal. Since bleed isn't that good in this game time attacks well. Katanas don't have much in poise damage. Doesn't you can't be aggressive it just means you've gotta get in at the right time.

                                      • Anonymous

Doing a lv60 swordmaster invasion build with this and an offhand simple infused caestus, Flynn’s ring, Cloranthy ring, ring of favor and life ring. Arguably the most fun I’ve had in pvp. Yes it’s technically a dex build so I’m “that guy” but I’m literally wearing rags and laying waste to armoured try hard r1 spamming gimp hosts left right n centre. 10/10 would build again

Infusing this with the burial gift, Fire Gem, will make the beginning of the game significantly easier for first time souls players.

                                          • Anonymous

To new players: this is an excellent weapon for those still learning the game. Its moveset isn’t complicated to use, but it’s hard to get the most out of. The more you use it, the more effective you will be. Infuse it with Sharp (the coal you need to do this is in Crucifixion Woods, just follow the right hand wall once you’re in the clear water area until you come to a door, follow the path to the end) and make sure you carry items to buff your weapon. This sword will see you through, and through its use you will learn spacing, timing and pacing in a fight, without having to actively train to learn these things.

                                            • Anonymous

Despite all the hype surrounding this weapon, I gotta say it's pretty bad for PvE. Does pitiful damage against common enemies and cannot even not break poise of the bowl throwers in undead settlement. +1 Uchi and you need at least 10 or more hits to take them out. Am I missing something ?

Does the Uchigatana have a secondary heavy? Cause i keep using the Heavy and it is going for a slash that's lower than the Light and consumes more FP than the Light and Parry.

Is still weapon any good anymore? I want to do a Katana only build, but torn between this or Black Blade.

Its a hard item to acquire, therefore it is a reward item!

I just started my first ever playthrough on DS3 and opted for the uchi. Its tough to use but very fun!

It makes the rotting greatwood a bit easier with its 2 handed slashes, recommend for this fight

At SL 71, 24 Dex, 10 Str, with leo ring, flynn's ring, hunter's ring and +10 Sharp infused uchigatana; my backstep+R1 counterattacks have done from 620 damage (unbuffed) up to 812 damage (charcoal pine resin) on other players.

Only ~358 AR. And people never expect backsteps in DS3. At that level, most people don't invest enough in Vigor, and the properly timed backstep+R1 easily ends a fight or at the least puts you at a drastic health advantage. I'll probably experiment with the chaos blade to see if I can get up to 900 or more counterattack damage.

Not sure if katana counterattacks are broken or if it has to do with headshots/attack placement, but it's a very underrated move at the moment.

Wish they brought back the holding style for katanas from demons soul. Holding it upright like ds1-3 just looks awkwards i like i held downwards like a samurai

An excellent weapon. Love buffing it. I've been doing incredible in PVP with this and a Rapier in my off-hand. Slashing with the Uchiha when they're close and stabbing with the Rapier through their rolls. Being able to Parry with the weapon in 2 hand form is also very useful, though it feels harder to pull off than using a parrying shield.

Was thinking of using this for a cosplay, should I use normal, sharp or raw infusion? Not sure which comes out with more dmg at 11 str 16 dex, but I'm guessing it's Raw?

I'm new to DS3, but I've been picking it well...! Just have one question; I finally got the uchigatana from that guy in the diaper but, when I equip it my attributes wont allow me to use it properly!!! What are the minimum attributes I need for it to be used effectively!? Thanks!

                                                                • Anonymous

I was kinda considering going poison on this one, over sharp, for the double status effect, since I'm going dex/end primary this char for NG. Now this is only my second char, and my first just hit NG+ as a caster so, any input is appreciated.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Became my savior for otherwise challenging trash and now I use it for almost everything.Cathedral Evangelist's were giving me problems until I took one of these to their massive gut. 2 handing a +2 uchi at the very beginning of undead settlement I was able to knock these out without taking damage. It seems to stagger them quite easily and the bleed effect hit's them extremely hard. The same effect was observed on the Lycanthropes in the road to sacrifices (big guys with the crosses on their backs.) walk up behind them and you get a 3 hit kill before they even turn around.

                                                                    • Anonymous

After playing with it for a while, the Uchigatana is a decidedly decent weapon that falls between the extremes. It has decent, although not the greatest scaling. It attacks a little slower than a straight sword, but the speed of the individual attacks make them difficult to parry. The uchi is in the middle range of attack speed for bleed weapons, leaving it neither wanting nor exceptional. The only thing one could really fault the uchigatana for is its higher stamina cost, weight, and low durability. A competent player can eventually figure out how to get around its weaknesses to discover an enjoyable experience.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Katanas seem worse than thrusting swords and straight swords in this game. I noticed Katanas have the same or less range, more startup and more recovery than the aforementioned weapons. Whats up with that? What can katanas do (aside from the hold skill- the mind games you can play with it in pvp are really good, but it's still a subpar skill since the direct attack from Hold cant be followed by anything) that other weapons don't? Can someone enlighten me?

                                                                        • It's good for the amount of stagger it provides.... it staggers most enemies with first hit and it's faster and lighter than great swords.

May take several kills to get it to drop. Next, buy at least 70+ bolts from the vendor. Next, use the tree trunk/elevation trick to get up on the tower (see YouTube for explanation. Run around the roof over to the area where the swordmaster is standing and simply shoot him while he stands below you. This might get fixed soon, since it's basically two exploits in one, but he's literally the hardest enemy I have encountered in DS3 and I am 3/4 through the game so far.

Sharp would make sense if you've got a dexterity build, though Refined seems well balanced for both Strength and Dexterity... is there a point in time when one is better than the other? such as.... Refined is better than Sharp until you have 60 dexterity, like how some infusions were in Dark Souls 1?

Keep a safe distance from him, and don't try to normal attack because he will just combo you to die or parry your attack. Wait until he attacks and parry is what I found an easy way to deal with him (I played assassin class btw). You might want to use ember to boost your hp so you can take 2 hit from him. Or just try until you know exactly his moves, then parry isn't that hard. I died 3 times and killed him at the 4th try with only parry and riposte (it's not that bad compare to using friebombs or bow with take a lot of time and patience). There're more ways to kill him, I just haven't seen anyone mention this way.

The katana and armour he drops will not appear until you interact with a Bonfire and reset the zone (or reload the game), but once you have done so return to where you killed him and you will see them on the ground on top of the stairs at his prior location.

However, this weapon has suddenly perked my interest and I'm very curious to see how it dose with crystal (that is if crystal can be repaired else forget it) and Simple infusions. I always go Sorcerer or Faith based but in DS3, I think I'll try sorcerer first. Then again, I might just fire imbue it and leave it at that.We shall see.

                                                                                                          • For my first and primary character I went Assassin with this and the Red Fire Gem (ended up with it at +10), used it all through the game together with a 100% phys shield, never felt lacking in melee DPS output compared to the people with slow hard-hitting weapons, was able to take the last boss in melee alone alone. Not to mention how it is when I get invaded, honorable beautiful two-handing and ending the invader's life with Bleed triggering.14STR 16DEX and I'm a mage to be reckoned with. If I were to restart on PC or get the English version I would do this again.
