Ultra Greatswords are a type of Weapon returning in Dark Souls 3. These Weapons usually do very high damage and have extremely slow attacks along with high Strength requirements. Ultra Greatswords benefit from "hyper armor" during certain attack animations, allowing you to continue a combo even while being struck. Ultra Greatswords also cannot be parried when two-handed, with the exception of the rolling and running attacks.
There are two types of Ultra Greatswords: Vertical and Horizontal.
Horizontal Ultra Greatswords have the standard Ultra Greatsword moveset when they are 1-handed and 2-handed, but are good for hitting multiple opponents due to its wide range.
Vertical Ultra Greatswords have the standard Ultra Greatsword moveset when they are 1-handed, but when 2-handed, the normal attacks turn into vertical slams and the ability to hit behind the user when the second normal attack is used.

I love how I met 4 people today who tried to parry my Profaned Greatsword. You can't parry these bad boys in DS3, dudes
- Anonymous
Started playing DS3 after beating Elden Ring, my favorite UGS is the Lothric Knight Greatsword, feels very knight-y. Why wouldn't we have knighty colossal swords in Elden Ring? I hope we actually get some in whatever DLC comes by.
- Anonymous
Looking back at this games UGS's you can really see how ugly most of Elden Ring's collosals really are. None of them reach the beauty of Astora Greatsword, for shame.

So many cool looking Ultras, really makes Elden Rings line up pale in comparison
- Anonymous
If they r1 twice they complain about spam, if they r2 they complain about damage, if they rollcatch they complain about range/netcode/etc, if they trade they complain about hyperarmor, if they use l2 they complain about op wa/parry/whatever, if they swing vertically they complain, if they do x damage they complain, if you get dual ugs they complain, if you block with fugs they complain... And if none of the above happens, they say it's a bad weapon class.
When did the community get so filled with karens?

question, what Ultras other than the Astora Greatsword have a 2H R1 sweeping attack rather than vertical? i prefer the sweep but wanna know my options.
- Anonymous
My favorite class in this game, and maybe the entire series. There’s so many options for all builds here. Want to smash things into little pieces with a strength build? The greatsword and FUGS are great options, even after the FUGS nerf. Want a dex build? Astora greatsword is there for you, as well as farron. Quality? Oh, there’s the good old BKGS, lorians gs, as well as the propane greatsword. Fashion? Ckgs is a true hottie with respectable damage as well. The zweihander is a jack of all trades for most builds. And last but not least, the LKGS dominates when infused with just about everything, even blessed.
Oh, and there’s the rkpgs for pvp l1 spam capabilities.

I like how 90% of UGS have Greatsword in their title instead of UGS
- Anonymous
Every time I try using an UGS in pvp I constantly end up swinging away from my opponent because for some reason this can turn away while swinging locked on. I eat **** and die for it, then I remember why I don't use an UGS.
- Anonymous
I hate how this weapon class can turn away from the enemy swinging while locked on. That's gotten me killed in so many situations just trying to space that it keeps me from actually trying to use UGS. Also whoever deleted my last comment can go take a hike. There was nothing delete worthy in my post.
You know what was missing, some type of ultra greatsword that caused bleed. Could have had a really edgy looking ultra
Ultra Greatswords in a nutshell:
Zweihander: well at least it was fantastic in ds1
Greatsword: Guts cosplay
Farron Greatsword: *presses l1 3 times
Fume Ultra Greatsword: BUFF THE FUGS
Profaned Greatsword: more like the PROPANE GREATSWORD
Black Knight Greatsword: absolute unit of a quality weapon
Cathedral Knight Greatsword: Mega Dark Sword
Lorians Greatsword: wtf is the game icon so different from the in game sword
Lothric Knight Greatsword: Max AR challenges
Astora Greatsword: not a true ugs if it scales better with dex
Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords: see farron Greatsword

Im at sl 245 on ng+7 with 35/35/40/40 in str/dex/fth/int respctively. Im looking for a long range, high poise, buffable ultra with the vertical moveset(since I tend to find the horizontal moveset quite slow for invasions and duels)
Any suggestions?

I used dex weapons for my first two playthroughs. Their faster movesets made it so some mistakes were not as punishing and plus i could weild a shield. But I gravitated to UGS because now I can better judge the situation and they feel very rewarding if used properly. That's it, check them out, they are fun.
- Anonymous
I think what infuriates me the most about these weapons is that when they catch you out of a roll they are still guaranteed a second hit unlike most other weapons. Honestly besides that everything else about these weapons feel just fine.
- Anonymous
Why be good at PvP when all I need to do is spam an vertical r1 attack? It'll hit them eventually thanks to lag and net. And when it finally does hit I get to take away 2/3 of their hp since you get two attacks with a giant slow weapon. Or better yet, just offhand a halberd for range and follow up with UGS r1 cause why the **** not? Honestly Fromsoft your incompetence knows no bounds

I didn't know there were so many people who complain about these... Saying people use them as a crutch. They're heavily telegraphed. Poise is weaker in this game than the other souls games. If anything, heavy weapons can be harder to play, as you have to time your attacks and go through the trouble of leveling up vit so you won't fat roll. They excel at killing phantoms and dealing with crowds because of their high damage, wide swings and hyperarmor. Maybe the people complaining are ganksquad leaders who got their and their friends' asses kicked in by invaders using UGS. As for the rolling r1.. Seriously? are you just that bad at the game you can't tell that someone is using an UGS and rolling torwards you? You genuinely think that one slightly powerful attack is more an issue than the ghost range and broken hitboxes of weapons like straight swords? The only UGS that are really scummy to use in PVP are ringed knight paired and farron. And even those can be punished very hard.

How do you know which UG sword is horizontal and which is vertical before you get it? That seems like it would be a nice, informative thing to list here.

Specifically within this weapon class- pvp ez mode: greatsword, fugs and cathedral knight greatsword. Obviously i mean with enough poise, if they out poise you you'd better space or out-damage them. Pve is easy with any ultra.
Straight-up AR: Lothric Knight Greatsword. Moveset: Astora/Black Knight Cancer: Ringed Knight Paired

These get pretty hard to use against skilled 3-year players, i found you have to make them think you're a one-trick-pony by repeating the same patterns until they try to punish, then throw them off with new attacks/ methods. Left hand weapons are very helpful with a slow UGS
- Anonymous
Was there a ninja patch or something? Someone complained in one of the weapon pages that they got parried while 2-handing an ultra GS.
- Anonymous
UGS are a fun and high damaging weapon class, but also very slow and predictable. In PVE where enemies charge at you in a predictable pattern, you can easily wind up hits from a distance and stunlock 95% of enemies in the game until they're dead. In PVE, they're pretty godly. In PVP though... They're pretty awful. I'm personally kind of a prick to UGS users, in that I know they'll always try to bait the trade. My personal agenda when I see these come out during invasions or dueling in the arena is to throw knives, bombs, or crossbow shots as harassment, until the player is aggravated. When they start getting aggressive, roll away until they're attacking late trying to get the roll catch, then give them a surprise turn-and-burn smacking before they can start an attack and get hyper armor. Roll away and start the process over again. Personally, I think we all know the UGS class is probably the slowest and worse class of weapons, if you have a circle button and two neurons, being hit by an UGS is really something you have to make a conscious effort to do.
- Anonymous
i wish they had a few more realistic ugs, like ringed knight paired gs would never work in reality. i'm not saying unrealistic thick ones should be romoved, but more big and realistic ones would be awesome, more like the zweihänder.
- Anonymous
I was invading with the Greatsword at +4 at around level 25 at the Cleansing Chapel and it was amazing. The sword itself wins matches, especially with that R2 roll catch.
- Anonymous
Thinking about trying a GS build on my next playthru. (Prob astora or LK) My only question/concern is stamina cost. Is there a hidden mechanic that reduces it, or do I simply have to plan for the extra stat points?

For ANYONE to complain about ultras in pvp is just SO... telling. It's literally just one of those things where, if you're good AT ALL, you won't have trouble. It really just is. Keep playing and you'll see and feel embarrassed you ever complained about them. The only exceptions are the Farron Greatsword and Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords. Farron Greatsword can easiy be backstab fished when the go for the breakdance, you just run in and backstab when they do the first sweep. The RKPG thrust is easily spaced once you get the spacing down and the WA is easily dodged once you dodge the thrust.
- Anonymous
Omg, this comments section is hilarious. Ultra greatsword rolling r1s>quick weapon r1s? What? There is literally an entire rolling animation to clue you in that they might rolling r1, the only way you'll get hit is if you didn't avoid it some way whether that be rolling, blocking or parrying, or if you're mid-animation which would be your fault.
- Anonymous
People complain about R1 spam of quick weapons, but forget about UGS rolling R1 spam, which can be much worse if you don't have a parry tool in your hand or miss a parry
- Anonymous
Oh sweetie... hyperarmor isn't easy mode at all unless they have so much that it lasts into their next r1. Hyperarmor is all about trading, what is good about having to sacrifice hp to attack? Also, trading definitely does take skill. I'm going to be brutally honest, handling hyperarmor is all about spacing, so if you're having trouble it's your own spacing skill that is the issue. The only case in which hyperarmor can be called OP is when it lasts into the next r1 as then you can't interrupt the r1. Hyperarmor is the same playstyle as poise casting miracles, if you've ever done that. Maybe that'll give you some perspective?
- Anonymous
Wanna play dark souls easymode? Pick ugs. No skill needed at all. Get high hp and stam, and equip high poise armor. Profit. Hyperarmor trough everything.
- Anonymous
ITT: People are either *****ing about UGS being OP, giving*****ty directions of how to use a UGS improperly, or blowing smoke up their own asses trying to convince people UGS are bad because most "bad" players will default to this weapon type. The key to the UGS is dynamic combat. as with all weapons if you try the same tactic over and over; you will lose to any competent opponent. Your bread and butter with an UGS is alternating harassment with feints. Creating the illusion of an opening is usually the only way you will land blows of any significance on an experienced target. Do NOT roll attack or sprint attack a target who can parry, because they will. Never over-commit to a combo that will leave you without stamina. And most important of all, NEVER lock on to your target with an UGS. Lock on tracking with these weapons will be recognized by any veteran souls player, and they will punish you effortlessly with the back stab you well deserve. Even without back stab being considered, locking on to targets with such a forward-heavy weapon type will make it easy for targets to "lead" you - The forward step you take each swing is more than enough to send you over a ledge. Above all else - remember that you are in the business of trading blow for blow. Any engagement that you can say you traded an equal amount of hits: you've won. Good luck and good slaying, fellow barbarians.

Fun fact to counter these u need a dagger or chaos bed vestiges one u have one UGS will probably be driven to extinction until everyone realizes there no op weapon and ppl who are like me/ ppl who have no idea how to space ur opponent. Use chaos bed vestige on the paired greatswords on the first l1 they stand no chance since that r1 can’t P O K E Y O U N O W

For the Lothric knight greatsword which infusion would be the best? I have now 62 str and 52 dex.
- Anonymous
Which one has the most AR without infusions but fully upgraded?
- Anonymous
For those people having difficulty hitting quick steppers I suggest attacking un locked on and switching up your attack times.
Most Ultra users just spam r1 that’s why dagger users have the advantage.
You can easily catch these guys off guard if you just switched up your timing
- Anonymous
Invasions are crazy fun with black knight greatsword. Some tips:
After using a strong attack, the sword ends up behind you and out of sight for the enemy. The second strong attack happens to start from behind your body, precisely where it ended up after the first R2. This means that after the first strong attack, many players will see the opportunity and move in to attack you while you are "vulnerable", when in reality you are already charging a second strong attack.
The same goes for rolling strong attacks. It is quite concealed and hard to spot, especially when there are other things to take the host's attention away. Such as mobs or the host's own team mates.
The occasional experienced host can consistently dodge R2s, counter this by holding R2 slightly longer to roll catch.
Pretend you are running away when you are on low health, and suddenly turn around with an R1 or rolling R2.
Drink estus a safe distance away to lure them in to attack, then punish.

Great for pve, terrible for pvp. Good reach, damage, hyper armor, and un-parriable. However attacks are so slow, a competent straight sword user can attack between blows and roll away. Or back stab. Best for pure strength builds and anti-ganking, fun invasion weapons as the hyper armor can punish and out trade cocky groups, but don't take into the arena.

Should be banned in pvp. It's pvp easy mode using these weapons. Borderline cheating even.

WHats the best UGS ive literaly been looking for hours just not something from the ringed city

Good luck hitting a quickstepper with this, you should probably have a SS to counter this or other fast methods (though if you manage to hit them with a UGS, they'll be taking like 600+ damage)

I'm trying to make a Pursuer build, is there a certain UGS I should use?

Here's how to be invincible in DS3 PvP:
-Equip an UGS, or other ultra weapon
-Equip armor for poise
-Have*****ty internet
-Always attack once then roll spam, unless the attack connects, and play passive in general
Congratulations. You can't be hit in startup frames because of your lag, even your run attacks and roll attacks have enough hyper armor (lag poise) to allow a trade, and you can't be outspaced / punished due to your laggy rollspam. Then you win by default when the inevitable trade happens.

ULTRA GREATSWORD HYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE ultras.
This is probably the best weapon class to use for invasions. Most of these have wide swing attacks and they all have relatively good damage, both important things for taking on multiple enemies which you have to do as an invader like 90% of the time. Also, the standing attacks cannot be parried when two-handing which is good because as an invader you generally can't afford to be riposted.
- Anonymous
A lot of fun to use in pvp, provided your oppenent isn't the passive-reactive type. Daggers are probably the worst matchup for these, because quickstep + lag = unhitable. Curved sword-users who aren't brain dead enough to try to trade with you are the next worse, followed by long katanas. Otherwise, the other matchups seem pretty winable to me.
- Anonymous
The Zweihander is the most reliable UGS so far in pvp. It has a GS weight, less stamina consumption than any other UGS, very good scaling on infusions(chaos!). Horizontal R1, rolling poke, and the unique R2 easily roll catch people. This is not just a giant dad meme, STILL best UGS.
- Anonymous
ive tried 5 hours for the ringed knight duel greatswords with the gold covetus serpant rings +3 and got nothing. any advice

PvP is kinda a bottleneck for UGS weapons now. The UGS weapons i almost exclusively see are the weapons with the horizontal 2H moveset and no one is really using UGS with the vertical 2H moveset anymore. It might have to do with the fact that 2H vertical moveset covers a wide area and can roll-catch people well. 2H vertical on the other hand, it's so easy for people to just jump in after the 2nd attack and backstab. It's almost like the shockwave from standing close to the impact of the UGS doesn't do anything anymore. What's worse that all 2H vertical UGS weapons have Stomp for a WA. It's a very good WA, I've been enjoying launching people up with the Bastard Sword. But because UGS are slow by design and 2H vertical moveset has a narrow range and it's easy to roll around, people are more ballsy and try to get cheep backstabs.
- Anonymous
I have never been a fan of the UGS moveset. It's slow and boring and there are so many better options for PVE. However, UGS seems to be the best weapon class for PVP, as everyone I meet uses one, and the slightest misstep basically leads to me getting stunlocked until the dude runs out of stamina.
- Anonymous
Lothric knight greatsword is the top tier of this class hands down
- Anonymous
Does anyone know if these can still be parried even when being two-handed/dual-wielded?

Depending on which stats you use ugs are usually the best so you can't complain about people using them because they are the best for most builds

At least 80% of arena duelist on the steam version of the game use nothing but ultra geatswords. I play as a dex intelligence build and reaching gold was a huge pain in the ass, for petes sake PC master race step up your variety, its so dull to go up against nothing but the same boring dull brute force Neanderthal play style day after day after day. The Zweihander can be dropped from hollow villagers in the Undead Settlement? Absolutely not. Someone please correct this...

hey guys im looking for a special UGS(?) i encountered in PVP lately, it looks a lot like the twin princes' Greatsword only much larger and with fiery streams on it, but i cant manage to find it anywhere. Im pretty sure its an UGS because of the moveset, pls help.
I cut out a chunk from the top paragraph, and reworked the remaining part slightly. The part I removed represented editorialisation which shouldn't be present. As it happens, the particular editorialisation in question actually held the complete opposite sentiment to most players' perception, but whether it was wrong or right, it shouldn't have been on a wiki page. A wiki page should ideally present data which readers can use to judge things for themselves, rather than trying to present an opinion. An opinion being presented in a context like this can fool a reader into reading it as fact.

So the Guts sword is an Ultra Great Sword named Greatsword, not to be confused with (or belonging to) the weapon class Greatswords. Well that was easy when searching the internet to find out which of if its 2-handed attacks was parryable. Dude, just rename it FromSoftware to what everyone calls it anyways, The Guts Sword.
- Anonymous
Need to git gud? Just use one of theese sword-shaped pillars and forget the need to use skill of any sort to git gud <3
It's really sad how badly handled the ultra greatswords are in Elden Ring. Especially for the infusible ones. Like in that game you have no reason to ever run anything but the Zwei or Gugs. Here every UGS has it's own identity.
