Whip is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



A leather whip that was never intended for use in combat.

Of little use against armor and tough scales, but quite formidable against enemies with exposed skin.

Skill: Impact
Strike from the left to evade shields and deal a stinging blow that temporarily slows stamina recovery. The shackles of bondage lie deep in the hearts of all humankind.



Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • Like all the other whips, it cannot be parried but also cannot riposte, backstab, or plunge attack.
  • Like all whips it cannot be deflected off shields, walls, or buffed players. This allows for it to attack through walls.
  • At 6 Strength and 50 Dexterity, a Sharp Whip will have 335 AR, the making it the strongest out of all the Whips.
  • Ironically for a weapon class so hated, this and the other whips' 1H R2 have one of the widest sweep hitboxes in the game, making it a good weapon for crowd control. When charged and/or buffed up, this becomes a fantastic clearer for generic enemies in base NG.
  • The 2H first R2 has unusually long vertical and forward range, sometimes managing to hit enemies up in ledges. Of special note is the fire breathing dragon in High Wall of Lothric, which can be killed like this if positioned at the correct angle.
  • This weapon is remarkably effective when battling against the Deacons of the Deep, as they don't resist slash and multiple deacons can be struck at once with the 1H R2.

 

 

Location/Where to Find

  • Looted from a corpse in the Undead Settlement. Directly after the Undead Settlement Bonfire, look for the courtyard area with a large mass of enemies and a tree with a fire at its base, then take the path down its left side into a dark arc-way that has a set of stairs visible leading up to a door. Enter that room, head down the stairs, move through the corridor and you'll be in an alley with a caster attacking you from afar. The first room to the right is empty, the first room on the left has an enemy break through and attack you as you approach, and that room has the corpse that the Whip is looted from.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

      Fire infused whip trivializes all ambushes in the game. Rats? Hollows? Maggots? Slugs? Sludge turds? Skeletons? Dogs? Birds? Spiders? Stunlock the entire group at once with consecutive 1handed R2s. It destroys all the trash mobs I can think of. It's better than Ultra Greatswords at crowd control and with minimal stat requirements as well. Incredibly useful. It's always in my 2nd right handed slot.

        Infuse this with fire and roleplay as Satan. Go to the Cathedral graveyard and whip the reanimated dead for all eternity.

          Been using whips again lately, surprisingly good for PVP duels.

          The R1 is still weird because it's slow, but great for luring people in. If you spam it at mid-range, they have 2 options back/roll away, or roll into you. The 1st is good because it maintains distance which you want when using a whip. If they come near you, you can retaliate with the weapon art. It's 1st 2 hits deal pathetic damage, but ensure stunlock on almost all people who don't use the heaviest armors.

          If they come at you with a rolling attack, you can either do the weapon art during the start up animation fo their attack to cancel it, or counter with a rolling attack of your own. The damage is great for the reach of the attack. Since you don't see whips too often, most people shrug the damage off, which is about 110-160 damage, and they don't realize their health is already down 50% within half a minute.

          The R2 has great range and damage, though the 1-handed 2nd R2 is shorter and not much use. Stick to the 2-handed R2 if possible. Like the R1, you can use it to keep distance or bait people into rolling into you for the weapon art.

          The running R1 is the weirdest but has a nice momentary stop before your attack actually hits. Meaning if your spacing is good, you can use it to outrange reactive R1 spams.

          The running R2 is good for surprises, since it comes off fast and hits behind you. Getting good with the whip means being ace with your roll timings. If your health is still full, you can risk a running R2 to throw people off. If they get hit, that's an easy 200 damage. If they roll behind you to try and backstab, they still get hit anyway.

          Overall, whips are great in spite of the flak it gets from people. It just works different and if you like the whip, you'll get good at it and it will surprise you. Weakness would be anything with poise/perseverance, and in-your-face aggression, though most builds are weak to that tactic too.

            A lot of people hate on whips in pvp for not being able to riposte or backstab, but the likes of the notched whip outranges pretty much anything except from ultras, stagger almost anything that's trying to hit you through it (obviously excluding ultras) and will almost always rollcatch anything that rolls directly to the sides, forwards or backwards. With the an elemental infused whip, you will always have chip damage through shields, and any whips with a bleed effect will always force your opponent to back off. With a bit of patience in your whip, you will almost definitely make your opponent lose theirs. However, in all fairness, professional timewasting is what the whip is extremely good at, letting invasions drag on for 15+ minutes and everybody involved loses all grasp of time and reality. But that is all it's good at. The people that know what they're doing will probably counter it super easily with either an ultra or know the attack timings of the weapon down to the last microsecond. However, unashamedly fun for driving wannabe tryhard invaders to complete madness.

                This and Witch's Locks are arguably the best weapons in the game. Whip damage looks pathetic on paper, but the reality is everything else. Whips come with the best range, best AREA of attack, wall piercing capabilities, best roll attack punishes, and one of the best weapon arts there is. All at a pathetically small stat investment requirement, with extremely light weight. And the full charge heavy attack does massive amounts of damage, despite the seemingly small AR.

                It's a great weapon for PvE, but more importantly it absolutely rocks in PvP and synergizes perfectly with caster builds. Sorcerers can offhand the staff for instant flash sword & farron darts, while main handing the whip, making them completely unpredictable and able to punish the enemy at any range. Witch's Locks obviously synergize with Pyro builds and work great to bait the enemy into a face full of black flame. And in either case you can make very powerful mid SL builds for <30% weight. This way you can ignore about 20-30 SL investment into Vigor and Endurance, because with <30% weight you can outroll anyone regardless of their stamina, and combined with a whip you can outrange and roll attack to win every "trade". Making you the perfect glass cannon that pisses everyone off.

                At the same time as you're nearly impossible to catch and can continuously chip away at their health, you still maintain your ability to cast those 900hp+ nukes from range, meaning the enemy is forced to waste estus to keep their health high or risk getting instagibbed.

                  I don’t know why whips are so uncommon, but this is actually one of the best weapons in the game. No matter how you look at the damage, it will always appear bad. You need to play around the fact that the playstyle this weapon uses is what is going to carry you in PVP. Last year I made a write up about the Drang Twinspears, and there I said there is two different ways to play it, buff build or straight dex. This weapon has the exact same idea going on with it, except I have yet to try making a buff build for this. What you want to do is equip the lightest armor in the game, ragged mask, master’s attire and gloves, and the old loincloth. Next, you put on your Flynn’s Ring to get the most damage. Then you have a sharp infused whip with 80 dex. With these items and stats you reach 419 damage, which is still pathetic looking, and trust me it is. The way you play is a very annoying one, in which you pretty much only use rolling attacks. This attack is weak, but very difficult to avoid, and it comes out pretty much faster than anything else, along with having incredible range at the same time. You will also want to one hand this weapon as the one handed R2 is a very good horizontal sweep attack, as the two handed version is a vertical sweep, which is much less valuable. Do remember that your attacks go through walls, which is best implemented with the R2. Lastly, the weapon art is your most threatening attack. It can trade with all low poise weapons as well, and if you are broken out of your animation, simply start the attack again as it is that fast and you will win the trade. If somebody approaches with a shield, 100% of your damage will ignore their shield. If you use this attack twice in a row on a blocking enemy, chances are it broke their guard. Also, the weapon art has the most disgusting hitbox in the game, as it will hit when you clearly did not hit them. You might want to keep a dagger on standby to go for your ripostes, as this will happen often, but at the same time you will be losing Flynn’s Ring damage. You can also do a very similar build with the Witch’s Locks, but you will do less damage with your rolling attacks and R2s, but your weapon art is buffed as it gets a 120 damage fire increase during the animation. Just make certain you are below 30% weight to get the most out of these weapons. This weapon is really good, probably since so few people know how to play against it, but it is probably the most unfun thing to play against.

                    One of the fastest weapons with good range. I don't rally understand why the whip is so hated. Maybe people just hate on it because they are afraid of being matched against it? Every troll build invader i come across seems confused by whips and just dies.

                      The best thing about this weapon is that it can’t be parried. So if you’re sick of parry spammers ruining your day, just use this. Majority of them don’t get you can’t parry whips, so they often try to anyway, thinking they aren’t getting the right timing.

                        When infusing with a refined gem my doesn't become a "refined whip". It changes to "skilled whip" instead. That and the cestus are the only weapons I've seen with that interaction. Does the name change imply a hidden stat boost or something? Is there any other weapons that get unique name upgrades when infused?

                          On a pure sorcerer, for the low cost of 2 dex, (which also gives you cast speed and aquamarine dagger) this is a lovely alternative to the rapier as a side weapon and spacing tool.

                            Would a refined or heavy whip be of any use or would it just be completely inferior to a sharp whip? I'm doing a run with only bows and whips and I wanna get strength for the Dragonrider Bow.

                                There should have been a reference with this. Giving this a Blessed infusion should have make it Simon's Whip, and a Chaos infusion should make it Trevor's Whip

                                  I think I haven't seen mentioned is how the Sharp Whip has a weird scaling for DEX builds. It gains 20 AR going from 40-60, but then gains 35 AR going from 60-85. 85 DEX is pretty much the cap for the weapon which is achieveable without sacrificing much at SL 120-125.

                                      whatever retard wrote that this is the strongest whip never even looked at the witchs locks. at 40/40 fth/int it has higher base AR than any other whip with any stats, and gets ~150 when you hit the l2.

                                        I like using this with a frozen weapon and snap freeze. Stats vig 40, att 16, end 40, vit 18, str 10, dex 45, int 20, rings favor +3, Life +3, Chloranthy +3, Hunter +3 Armor Pale Shade Set. Pretty powerful

                                          Not too bad. 1v1s will be very difficult while using this. A lot of people still don't know that it's UNPARRIABLE. Does ok damage. 2v2s and 3v3s are a different story. The standard whip is great for stalling while teammates respawn, adding extra damage to teammates combos, defending a teammate without putting yourself in danger, hitting many people at once, finish off weak players, etc. Overall, witch's locks are better, but if you run a 20/60 str/dex build and no fth/int, then this is the 2nd best.

                                            I find that this catches a lot of people off guard because whips have an infamous history of being the worst weapons in the dark souls series. When I do the one hand R2 sweep I even hit people if they're rolling, and by doing that I can win simply by attrition if I keep my distance enough.

                                              Light weight, good range/sweep (if hard to predict) and it's Skill is effective and fun, but it's surprisingly slow for a weapon that doesn't hit very hard. If it was faster it could genuinely be one of the best Dex weapons. Still love it though, got to get my Castlevania kicks somewhere.

                                                  After some research, it seems that it's the best whip when it comes to physical damage.At 40 dex, sharp whip has 305 AR.The spotted whip has 300 AR.The sharp notched whip has 285 AR with 42 dex.So the spotted whip is better if you have low dex (higher base damage, lower scaling) or really want the poison effect (you can apply rotten pine resin on it!)The notched whip is better if you want the bleed effect.Witch's locks is far better only if you have a pyro or dark build.It deals 316 fire damage with 40 int/fait (149 phys with 17 dex...)Add the 100 fire damage the WA gives you...Anyway, I'm adding the whip to my great scythe build to finish off low health opponents who start playing passively.

                                                    For some reason, a whip infused with Refined property will be called "Skilled Whip." Also, on a 40/40 str/dex build Sharp and Refined infusion give the same AR.

                                                      I don't know if I miss something, I just try a run with it and I'm in the beginning of the game (undead settlement), but I just do 1/3 of my damage (~50 damage instead of 162) I know ennemies have some resistances but even on naked zombies in the beginning I barely do 60.
