Hollowing

hollow infusion icon

  • Effect: Player becomes progressively more hollow with each death. Unlocks free levels with Yoel of Londor at certain levels. Also augments the Hollow infusion to increase Luck making Hollowing a way to increase Luck without actually leveling up.
  • Mitigation: N/A. The option is voluntary.
  • Cured: Fire Keeper Soul turned into firekeeper, then pay to be cured. To remove the visual effects, use Purging Stone. Praying to the Statue of Velka

Hollowing is a "statistic" in Dark Souls 3 that is accumulated when the player dies while branded with a Dark Sigil. The amount of Hollowing gained per death is equal to the number of Dark Sigils in the player's inventory. At 15 or more Hollowing, the player becomes Hollow. A character can have a maximum of 99 Hollowing.

Being Hollow gives the character a progressively more shriveled appearance, only visible when naked or wearing gear that reveals the body. Hollow characters also receive a bonus to Luck when wielding a Hollow weapon. Hollowing does not have any other effect on the character in Dark Souls 3 (it does not reduce weapon damage or maximum HP).

Branding

Speaking with Yoel of Londor allows the player to gain a free level five times in exchange for being branded with a Dark Sigil each time. While the first level up needs no Hollowing, the following level-ups need respectively: 2, 6, 12 and 15. The player becomes a Hollow when the Hollowing counter reaches 15. Three additional Dark Sigils can be obtained from Anri of Astora through Yuria of Londor's questline, but these do not give the player any more levels.

All Sigils appear under Key Items, and each hollows the player for one point in death. For example, when three Dark Sigils are in the player's inventory, the player will gain 3 more Hollowing each time they die.

Once Yoel has given all five Sigils, he dies and Yuria of Londor appears where he used to be.

Removing Dark Sigils and Hollowing

Once the player has given the Fire Keeper the Fire Keeper Soul, she can remove the Dark Sigil from the player and remove all Hollowing, which costs a number of souls equal to the player's next five levels. The levels are not lost, the player is just paying the cost for the previously "free" levels. This will cancel Yuria's questline, Londor Pale Shade's summon signs, and make the Londor Pale Shade invade the player at certain in-game areas. Note that curing the Dark Sigil in this way will make it impossible to get any more Dark Sigils for that playthrough, and the player will not be able to get the Usurpation of Fire ending.

Reversing Hollowing

The player can reset their Hollowing counter back to zero (and un-shrivel their appearance) by using a Purging Stone. Purging Stones will only reset the player's Hollowing and do not remove the Dark Sigil, and using a Purging Stone will not abort Yuria of Londor's questline. Purging Stones can be purchased from Yuria of Londor, or bought from the Shrine Handmaiden if you give her the Hollow's Ashes or Yuria's Ashes. They can be farmed from Sewer Centipedes in the Profaned Capital toxic swamp.

Alternatively, it can be healed by Velka or the Purging Monument if you select the Dissolution option.

Hollow Notes

  • If you die while wearing a Ring of Sacrifice and are not hollow, your character will not become hollow when they revive (though you will still accrue hollowing). You can continue to postpone becoming hollow with more Rings of Sacrifice all the way up to 99 hollowing, at least until you run out of rings. Note that Hollow-infused weapons will not give their Luck bonus if you are not hollow, even if you have 15 or more hollowing.
  • As of Patch 1.03, your character loses their shadow and reflection in the water when Hollowed. This is believed to be a bug or a mistake since Hollows in Dark Souls I & II still have their shadow and reflection.

ngl for certain armor sets the hollowed look fits better, looking like you are worn out together with your armor is quite underrated

the things going hollow will do to cursed characters... i made a hilariously creepy character by moving all sliders in character select all the way to to the right (works in ER too for about the same result) and then when i got hollowed my eyes faded over completely orange-brown (they were originally completely white) for some reason lol i kinda love it

Can I still get the silvercat ring and untrue dark and white ring in NG+ if ive removed hollowing? I'm going to assume I'm not able to, but just want a confirmation.

          • Anonymous

If you remove your hollowing through the firekeeper or the purging monument at your character's max level, you will never be able to acquire dark sigils again, preventing you from ever having Yuria spawn in your game. This in turn prevents your from being able to get the "usurpation of fire" ending and you'll never be able to benefit from hollow infusions.

I liked that they made the covenant icon more hollow and dead like and I like it when you are max hollow it looks like it is even more dead it makes you feel hollow

Hollowing should make the hollowslayer greatsword deal more damage to you. It would be a cool detail.
And if you don’t want that happening to you but still want to do the questline, purging stone.

It's funny scrolling though these comments after so many years, The further down I read the more confused I get.

You would think there'd be an official answer by now, not just for this but for so many things throughout this trilogy, Isn't there an official guide/dev statements out there. What about the data miners!? I need facts lol

The +5 damage increased for being hollow with hollow weapon, is not worth it for fashion wise, unless wear clothing covering whole body.

i've done yoel's quest, and died a few times since and now i'm at 99 hollowing. is this normal or is this some kind of glitch that will magically make me OP when i can finally hollow my bleed weapon?

Can anyone tell me if hollowing increases the dps for chaos fire? ; seething chaos, chaos fire orb, bed vestiges etc etc

I wished Hollowing wasn't just free five levels and that it granted more of a unique access to abilities or interactions on par to being turned into a Beastman or Squidman from Bloodborne, or affected your stats more akin to Dragon form.

This page should try to explain what being hollow actually means before going in to the multiple details within details and their side paths. And just now I saw that this question has been asked in the comments for years and no one still bothered to see it as relevant information to write about. I'm done with these cryptic **** games with their bullshit and anal tryhard nerd calculator circlejerking ******* players. I hope Elden Ring sucks big balls with its same boring copy paste design since Demon's Souls.

I remember searching this up elsewhere and it said the higher ur hollowing was the lower the chances of finding others (a.k.a summons and being summoned) are. Mam idk what to believe anymore.

when you cancell yuria's questline by removing the dark sigils anri will die anyways, other person will marry her and she will die anyways, when you reach the room she is already dead with the sword in the face. the wiki dont mention this, so if you want to get the other ending to anri's questline then kill yuria or the pilgrim in chameleon form

what would happen if one were to get just one dark sigil from yoel? would you later on have to pay the 5 levels, or just 1?

What the hell is going on with your eyes when you are hollowed? I don't get what this suppose to be, it looks like skin would be over your eyes.

                                    • Anonymous

Finish a playthrough and get the usurpation of fire ending. Use a leftover purging stone the next playthrough and the hollowing womt come back since the sigils are gone. No where do I see this mentioned.

When i started DS3 and died, i was confused, since in the previous titles that made you look like beef jerky, then i found out about this...

So is there no downside to being hollowed, other than your dilapidated appearance? DS and DS2 would take away health when hollowed, but that doesn't seem to be the case with DS3. The damage boost of the hollow-salyer greatsword doesn't even effect pvp, so why not be hollowed?

                                            • Anonymous

So if I jump of a high place (upper part of shrine) with no souls and no ember, repeatedly, do I still get hollowing?

                                              • Anonymous

Being hollow also increases the time it takes for effects to wear off. This won't be fun travelling through farron swamp.

Removing hollowing should keep your dark sigils- hollow builds shouldn't be forced to look like beef jerky w/o a ring.

It seems really crazy that weapons like the hollow slayer sword doesn't do more damage against hollowed players in pvp, or has this been tested?

                                                    • Anonymous

I dont understand how you can not be hollow with 15 or more hollowinv points? "Note that Hollow-infused weapons will not give their Luck bonus if you are not hollow, even if you have 15 or more hollowing." Question: If i have 40 on luck and 1+1 hollow weapon + shield in hands, and I buff the weapon with carthus rogue which gets scaled from luck does it work better?

                                                      • Anonymous

To the people who never played DS1/DS2: Be grateful that there really aren't any drawbacks to hollowing in this game lol

                                                        • Anonymous

Curing the sigil is a complete waste of souls, just commit to getting the bad end for that NG, start a NG+, and you don't have to worry about hollowing ever again because you'll lose your sigils for free at the start of the NG+ Unless you LIKE paying 2m souls for nothing

                                                          • Anonymous

Hollowing does pretty much nothing and does not negatively impact you, besides making your character look like a stick of beef jerky or something you'd buy for your pet to chew on. The only impact it has is on Yuria's questline. If you get the free levels from Yoel, and then cure the dark sigil, the quest will end. Yuria will leave if you do not kill her before leaving firelink shrine when you cure it. This means you will not be able to get Darkrift or her Armor for that play through. Therefore, be sure to buy any items and kill her when you cure the dark sigil as they will not be available again until new game+. However, hollowing does not have an effect on any other questline. Alternatively, at 15+ Hollowing, hollow infused weapons and shields will provide +5 Luck, which is the primary damage stat hollow weapons scale with. This bonus is only applicable if the weapon is equipped, or visible on the character. For example: a sword and shield hollow infused will give +10 luck, whether you have one in each hand, or are two handing the sword with the shield on your back. However, filling the rest of your weapon slots with hollow infused daggers will not get you an extra 20 luck. Only the current weapon in each hand counts. So don't screw yourself on the bonuses by wielding one large weapon with nothing in the other hand.

unlike other dark souls games, hollowing doesn't have any downsides besides making you look very dehidrated and your icon next to the healthbar is not so pretty. if you don't care about how the character looks naked you are better being hollowed because the luck is boosted with hollow weapons.

                                                              • Anonymous

Nowhere in this entire article, does it specify if Hollowing actually does anything. Who the ***** writes this?

                                                                • Real shame they couldn't put more thought into this; would've been great if they'd turned this feature into something akin to Bloodborne's Insight or Demon's Souls' World and Character Tendency, but I guess FromSoft can only find inspiration under the auspices of Allfather Sony.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Wasn't the brand original a trick of Gwyn to suck humans dry of humanity to feed the flame? Beside the "chosen one mechanic"? Now it's all let the hero make his noble sacrifice and let the sun shine...but you do realise that this will produce more armys of living corpses right? That the flame will continue to suck out humanity of humans? The reason why there were so many heated discussion in DS1? If or if not the dark lord ending is a bad one or not? Because keeping the flame burning was a very questionable decision, too. It came with a very high price for humanity!

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

The cost is next five levels. You can test this by gaining one level from the pilgrim and check the cost to remove curse and next level at the fire keeper.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Way to toss another core mechanic of the game along with sin. DS2>DS3 there I said it...

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The removal of your shadow and reflection when hollow isn't a bug, but a purposeful choice. Like many things in Dark Souls this relates to the convolution of time, as well as a whole new level of deterioration of hollows, you being a new, unique ashen hollow explains why this was not present in the previous titles. This trait is not present in the bosses because they are no longer bound by the hollow curse, if ever they were. I, frankly, see it as as evidence that you've become a paradox, as the fire that burned you to ash was the same fire which cures the curse, thus brandishing the curse once more turns you into something new, as such you become the dark lord. But as these games have always existed in a realm of cycles, with one ending explaining that even with the fire completely fading it will one day return, one must ask the question, are you the final chosen undead as well as the first cursed hollow?

Is it this high because I leveled up more after my hollowing? Because I did the math and that doesn't count for the levels I got from yoel or my levels from where I am. Take it from me boys this***** ain't worth the levels at all. I wonder if it's better just to buy purging stones instead
