Mendicant's Staff is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

A staff with a small bowl attached to the tip, similar to a mendicant's crook. Absorb additional souls from fallen foes.

The staff's history is unclear. It may be a relic of an ancient serpent's greed, or a ritual artifact used to summon souls.

Skill: Steady Chant
Boost the strength of sorceries for a very short period. Works while equipped in either hand.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Infused or Buffed.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • Trade it to the crow to obtain the Sunlight Shield.
  • Increases souls gained by 20%. Stacks with all other items.
  • The staff must be held for the souls to count, this is proven by silver serpent icon in the status bar.
  • Rusted Coins and full Item Discovery gear are recommended if trying to obtain this Staff, as it is very rare. The nearest Man-Serpent Summoner to a bonfire is at the Great Belfry.
  • The word 'mendicant' originally referred to one who belonged to one of the religious orders that originally relied solely on alms for their upkeep; those who are given to begging; a beggar can be said to be a member of a mendicant order. Given that Man-Serpent Summoners rely as heavily as they do on their summons to absorb and inflict damage for them, this might explain the name chosen for the staff that they carry.
  • At 60 INT it has a spellbuff of 208.

Base luck 15, shield of want, gold serp ring +1, crystal sage rapier, symbol of avarice, and gold rusted coin. 3 kills per coin. Had 6, used 3, gained 3 staffs.

      • 02 Jan 2017 00:15

Got two of these back to back with a 107 discovery. Didn't realize they were so rare.

The trick is to equip this as your right handed second slot. Also have Shield of Want as left handed first slot, the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring on, and have the Symbol of Averice at the ready.

That is +20% souls for the staff, +20% souls for the shield, +10% souls for the ring, and +50% for the mimic hat, equaling %100% souls.

When you beat a boss, there is a short window of time until you get the souls. Quickly equip the mimic hat, and swap your right handed weapons. Boom. You just doubled your souls. If you are summoned into a NG+ at the Dancer, you can net over 100k souls for her using this method.

Spellbuff typo? It says 60, but I'm sure that isn't right. Did the person writing this forget to have the correct stats for it or something, or does it just have a really low spellbuff?

          • Which is better?22 Jul 2016 17:08

I got 5 of them in under 20 minutes with 350 item discovery.

Which gives a better soul bonus, the Mendicant's Staff or the Shield of Want???

            • Name of item is misspelled.18 Jul 2016 18:04

The name of the item is "MeNdicant's Staff", not "Medicant's Staff". A mendicant is a beggar, as opposed to a medicant which is a cure or remedy. The reference to a beggar is in line with the serpents' connection with greed, which also explains the soul gain bonus.

              • potential tip07 Jul 2016 18:42

Perhaps it's just luck/superstition, but I didn't get a single drop after about 30 kills at belfry. I then decided to do two things, swap my location between the two summoners each time, and most importantly wait for them to actually summon something. I got two staves in three kills this way.

                • Title's misspelled.30 Jun 2016 08:09

It's missing an 'n'. I thought it had something to do with medic, like a healer. Hadn't read the title below the picture, which does say 'Mendicant'.

Fun fact: In other languages this word means beggar in the common place meaning, no order involved. Like 'mendigo' in Portuguese.

                  • 438 item discovery22 Jun 2016 15:57

                      • Well.03 Jun 2016 00:32

Dropped after about 125 kills with either 239 or 289 item discovery depending on whether I had a coin cracked (about half and half).

That was fun >.>

                        • Best way to farm it31 May 2016 13:21

                          From the great belfry bonfire,

1. Equip covetous gold serpent ring,

2. Buy a bunch of rusted coins from patches (they are 200 souls each so dirt cheap),

3. Equip the mimic head (farm them by throwing undead hunter charms at them, when their teeth do the little pop animation there should be an item you can pick up from them, if there isn't then just punch them once and they will close their mouths again and won't aggro. You can keep repeating this and get the mimic head easily. Can also buy undead hunter charms from shrine handmaid for 500 souls each if you gave her the paladin's ashes.),

4. (Optional) Equip crystal sage's rapier on your off hand. This weapon boosts item discovery by 50 and if you are in ng+ and dont care about the spell from crystal sage soul and can get it to +4/5 no problem then you can get 2 and kill it with the upgraded one for 100 item discovery.

5. Finally the actual strategy is use a rusted coin only when you are almost inside the room with the summoner just outside his aggro range. This will allow you to kill him and run back to the bonfire 3 times with one coin as long as you don't dilly dally around too much. With all the items listed above minus the rapiers with a base luck of 11 you will have 311 item discovery with rusted coin buff. I had 336 item discovery when I farmed it since I was at ng+ with gold serpent ring+1 and got it on around 13th~ kill. 25 item discovery shouldn't make a big difference though.

                          • Light weight21 May 2016 10:24

This is lighter than the Shield of Want, so it's a little easier on your equip load to have two of these for the sake of soul farming (i.e. keep in your offhand, and then switch to them before a boss or enemy dies)
