Pyromancer's Parting Flame is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



The pyromancy flame of Livid Pyromancer Dunnel that attracts the echoes of  death.

When Dunnel lost his hideous spouse, he gave his own pyromancy flame as an offering, which transformed into a parting flame. Not long after, Dunnel became a mad spirit, cursed to wander the lands.

Skill: Parting Flame

Release store of death echoes to gain a modest dose of Estus.

 

Notes and Tips:

  • Upgraded with normal Titanite, and can only be upgraded by Cornyx of the Great Swamp.
  • The Pyromancer's Parting Flame leaves a trail of fire during its casting animations, which will damage nearby opponents. This additional damage compensates for its lower spell buff when compared to the Pyromancy Flame, and will out damage the Pyromancy Flame on any pyromancy where the fire trail hits as well as the pyromancy. The flame trail can trigger before the pyromancy itself, this is notable on pyromancies like Black Flame as it makes it difficult to dodge at close range. The following is a list of pyromancies that produce a flame trail that can deal additional damage: FireballFire Orb, Bursting Fireball, Great Chaos Fire Orb, Chaos Bed Vestiges, Great Combustion, Sacred Flame, Profaned Flame, Black Flame, Black Fire Orb, Seething Chaos. It should be noted that Sacred Flame does not produce a flame trail, but does deal additional damage as though it did.
  • Has a higher stamina consumption than the regular Pyromancer's Flame.
  • The weapon art's ability is triggered by killing enemies while the flame is active.  After killing 12 enemies, the Parting Flame will begin to glow brightly.  Activating the WA at this point will cause the player to regain 1 normal Estus flask.  The WA must be used before the Flame can accumulate another charge from more deaths, meaning the stored "charge" cannot stack.
  • The Strength requirement not being met has a different effect than other catalysts. Spell buff, Spell damage, Focus cost, Stamina consumption, and the damage from the fire trail all see no penalties for players with less than 15 Str. However, attacks (like Great Combustion and Black Flame) may "bounce" off of shields and some armored enemies at melee range. Additionally, as with many other weapons, lacking the strength requirement renders the Weapon Art unusable.

 

 

Location/Where to Find

  • Painted World of Ariandel: Past the Snowy Mountain Pass bonfire, on the bottom floor of the crypt with the giant flies (can also be accessed from the Ariandel Chapel bonfire if the shortcut to here has already been opened).  There is a fly facing an illusory wall on the top floor which will lead to the bottom floor.  From here, proceed to the right side of the room to a walled-up doorway.  This is another illusory wall.  Proceed through here until you reach the outside area with giant roots.  Carefully descend down the roots until you reach the tower below.  The corpse here will contain the Parting Flame.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity, Magic, Fire, Lightning, and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat]. This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks becomes weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an item's durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at its best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

      Also judging by the warmth miracle, Mound Makers fear a separation from the gods, so it makes sense for Dunnel to collect shackles to be closer to his lost spouse (if it was Priscilla, who is a god).

          an invaders best friend.. for those hard to deal with ganks.
          i always assumed the estus refill was just a glitch. i always thought the WA was a lingering hitbox on some pyros at the cost of some damage.

            this pyro flame has a specific trick when used against human npcs or in pvp :

            as stated here, the fire trail on cast has synergy with great combustion and blackflame for the added melee damage, but it also has an interesting side effect (only happens at max cast speed as far as i know)

            as the fire trail hits slightly earlier than great combustion/ black flame but has less range, it becomes possible to get a black flame -> black flame true combo.

            performing this combo requires you to space your opponent with the first black flame as to NOT hit them with the fire trail, and follow-up with another black flame. if the second fire trail connects, the black flame will combo. this is particularly consistent if your opponent is running directly towards you.

            keep in mind that connecting the first fire trail will prevent the second black flame from comboing tho

              You get credit for anything that dies anywhere in the entire level. As an invader you can keep this in your offhand while you search for the host, and if they kill 12 enemies you get a free estus for doing nothing.

                How well does this thing's lingering flames pair with something like toxic mist or poison mist? If casting up close will the flames deal significant enough damage to warrant it worth using compared to the base flame or no?

                    Why doesn a damn pyroflame needs a requirement from strength? It's really just for messing with people with no vaild reason at all. I wanted to make a full pyro build with no points put in strength and dexterity, using them for attunement instead, but looks like I have to waste 3 points on strength and miss out on my 6th slot on my lv125 character, because dumb reasons.

                      This flame only outdamages regular Pyromancy Flame if you are using it in melee range, mostly with Great Combustion. Initial hit is always fire, meaning it is best used in a fire clutch setup. Using Dark Pyromancies with dark clutch will worsen the output.

                      Though there are many enemies that are open to fire, so it wont be a problem other than a few bosses such as Demon Prince.

                        just to make sure, this thing has the same spell buff of the normal flame but has trials? if so i would still use my regular flame too buff my weapon with carthus flame arc, since i use that catalys only for that

                            Man I have yet to beat someone using this. I’m surprised it’s not more common among pyros. It seems like all of them just use Demon Scar. But whenever I fight someone with this thing I can’t get close. They just combo black flame into itself and melt me

                                I use the normal pyromancy flame and never used the WA with it, should I switch+upgrade to the parting flame?
                                I'm on the Ringed City DLC, finished everything else, so is it worth it right now or should I not bother?

                                • Can someone tell me the difference between +10 and +9 versions? At 40/40 int/fth it has the same spelbuff both in +9 and +10. Is it worth spending titanite slab?

                                      The extra damage is super effective with Great Combustion. This combo is like Dark Hand levels of power in the early game, and I've gotten through Dancer, Mad King, and Champion Gundyr with just that, Chloranthy Ring, and 4 Ashen Estus. Take Clutch, Witch, and Swamp ring if you don't want to kys, though.

                                        Additionally if you do not meet the STR requirement of the flame, trying to Black Flame the Twin Dragon Greatshield my character does the stumbling animation (glancing). Sample size of 1 so take it with a grain of salt or test yourself.

                                            Soooooooo it says on here that there is a flame trail that does extra damage when u cast certain pyromancy spells but now that I mention it. I dont even see this flame trail when I cast a pyromancy. I tried Chaos Bed and a few others but no "flame trail"

                                              Use this with Ring of the Evil Eye +3 as a phantom and you've got so much more healing. That single estus charge is the difference between life and death in PvP sometimes. Definitely my fav pyro flame, and it helps that it has the highest sacred flame damage with that spell being very FP cost effective. I kinda want to try an Arstors Spear build with Parting Flame just for the insane healing you'd get from fighting PvP. If you're playing as a white phantom and you're not using the demons scar this is the pyro flame for you. Can easily get 5+ extra estus if you clear the entire ringed city with your host. Maybe even slap some more regen into the build if you think you're able to get away with it. Can also be useful if you enjoy fighting invaders as a host, ganking or otherwise.

                                                In case you were wondering, you can't use the WA to get extra max estus when summoned as a phantom. I've also tested to see if Flame Fan makes use of the fire trail, and no, it doesn't.

                                                    It's worth noting that using this without meeting the requirements is not without a disadvantage. It bounces off of shields when using dark flame, for instance... could matter in both pve and pvp.

                                                          If you use this glitch to recover all your estus after an invader made you chug it all down, you are a cheater. You might as well just turn on cheat engine. Play legitimately or go offline.

                                                          • Unless you're a dedicated Pyromancer, I can see a few problems losing a hand to have this thing equiped for WA. Also, having it equiped/activated for 12 kills is a novelty at best. It's Spell rating is lower and consumptions higher than a regular Flame so figuring out if this's for you is simple. If you Cast at range/buff you don't need this, if you're a dedicated Pyromancer at close range and willing to give up a hand then this might be for you.

                                                              I don't see this thing a whole lot, though in my opinion it's in many ways alot better than the normal pyro flame. Sure it doesn't get as high scaling, but on my 40/40 build it's only a difference of about 15 spell buff. This could bring down some high damage spells 45-60 damage, but mostly the lava trail it leaves often deals about the same damage I'd lose. But for weaker spells, it's almost always a damage gain. Secondly, the lava pool will proc even if the spell is blocked or rolled. This can stun people even if the main spell misses, making combos easier and more reliable and atleast a little damage more assured. In PvE, this thing's weapon art far outclasses the normal pyromancy flame by a mile. You're going to want to allotte more ashen flasks, so naturally your normal flasks run low, and this helps cure some attrition issues. I often find myself running pvp content with only 8 or fewer normal flasks, and never running out of healing. Perhaps this thing is too hard to find, truth be told I've beaten the game about 100 times on various ng+ levels amonsgst 25 characters, and never bothered to find this thing till I specifically played a pyromancer from start to finish.

                                                                I wonder if there’s mistranslation in the name, meaning it should be “Pyromancer’s Burial Flame” rather then “Parting.” A parting flame is a old ritual tradition in lighting a candle before a window every night to wish loved ones who are a very long ways away from home a safe journey upon their return. A burial flame however is a candle and/or oil lamp left upon a deceased loved ones grave to wish their spirit a safe journey to the after life and in some traditions to ward off evil who would wish to do harm to the spirit of the deceased. It would make more sense if this was a burial flame for it was left on the body of a deceased loved one to which it turned into a greater flame and is able to channel what looks like spirit whisps into the hereafter, to which is rewarded with estus. Also, it would give some relevance to the high strength requirement for the user of the flame are being filled with the spirit echos of the dead, who become very heavy and to the point where user dose a ritual gesture of sendoff and in sends them off to wherever.

                                                                      I think the Weapon Art for this now stacks. I was doing co-op helping a player get through an area and then unlock the short cut, then when we got to the boss fog it looked like he spammed the weapon art for the flame a good 5 times in a row and got five flasks in a row. Can anyone else confirm that this?

                                                                              This wiki is WRONG there IS a penalty for not making the strength requirement and it is that you CANNOT use the Parting Flame weapon art without it. Get your life together fextralife.

                                                                                This page needs to remove the bit about no penalty from not meeting the strength requirements and mention that the weapon art is unusable without the stats. The WA is useless in PvP but for PvE you can get a few estus refills as you work through a stage, which might be worth it for some people.

                                                                                    • This is just a shot in the dark, but you don’t think Pyromancer Dunnel’s “hideous” souse was Fluffybreed Priscilla? Because it was said that his Pyromancy Flame was used as an offering to his spouse. And where is this Parting Flame located? Where MustBreed Priscilla was in DS1. Not to mention they could mean “Hideous” as in more of a Heretical way due to Priscilla being associated with the Lifehunt Scythe and in turn “Occult Weapons” (AKA things that are primarily used against the gods), which in turn also made the Gods Fear her. Oh yeah and maybe the fact that she’s also a crossbreed between dragon and god is also probably something they feared too. Again, this is probably a stupid theory but just a little food for thought.

                                                                                          There is a penalty for using the Parting Flame without meeting the minimum STR-requirement. If the 'extra' flame of the glove hits an enemy, while he´s blocking with a shield, you will bounce off. Tested with Parting Flame & Black Flame on a Pontiff Knight.

                                                                                                  I have an additional question regarding failed stat requirements: do you still build-up 'Death Echoes' while equipped if you failed to meet the stat requirements (STR/FTH/INT), I thought it might be interesting to have it equipped and then ring-swap in order to use the weapon art, but clearly that won't work if it doesn't build up Echoes. Any info? Might test this later myself.

                                                                                                  • Actually Parting Flame without meeting the 15 strength requirement only "bounces off" when hitting certain sturdy/tough mobs, usually the ones with obese looking like Winged Knights, Cathedral Knights and Old Demon Knights. Against mobs with standard physique such as Lothric Knights, Silver Knights and Oceiros, Parting Flame works just as good even if the caster does not meet the strength requirement --- --- dealing regular damage and using normal stamina.

                                                                                                    When against a raised shield without meeting the 15 strength requirement, Parting Flame only "bounces off" when the "Flaming hand" directly contacts the raised shield during casting. In other words, even if the enemy raised its shield and the caster does not have 15 strength, as long as the caster avoids to have his/her Parting Flame get in touch with enemy's shield during casting, Parting Flame would work just fine as the enemy does not have its shield raised.

                                                                                                    In PvP, under most cases, Parting Flame would work normally even if the caster does not reach the 15 strength requirement. Parting Flame would only bounce off when directly hits an enemy players's raised shield during casting, or hits an enemy player under the effects of certain weapon arts such as Perseverance or Stone Flesh.

                                                                                                    Hence, if you simply want to use Parting Flame in PvP, it is not mandatory to raise your strength to 15 in order to use Parting Flame effectively in most cases; you just need to be familiar with circumstances that Parting Flame would "bounce off" and avoid to use Parting Flame before equipping Knight's Ring in those conditions.

                                                                                                      Keep in mind you'll need to meet the 15 Strength requirement if you plan to use this Pyromancy Flame against anyone up-close. The weapon " bounces off " characters/shields when the unique explosion starts, canceling your pyromancy-spell casting and doing little damage. This is very noticeable if attempting to use a Great Combustion/Black Flame on anyone using a shield, you'll fail to cast and have your flame bounce off, only inflicting the initial burst from the glove itself.

                                                                                                          I've noticed that this actually gives me 2 estus flasks now. I don't know if this was a recent change or not.

                                                                                                          • An absolute god send for those pyromancers out there looking for that much more survivability, the free Estus is absolutely amazing. This combined with warmth gives you a solid amount of longevity when helping someone else out. Also allows you to go more heavy with Ashen flask as long as you can be patient while waiting on warmth to top you guys off. Remember, not everything is a race. =)

                                                                                                                Why does the weapon art only accumulate when current equipped but if you trade out you lose all kill progress... if it's equipped in any slot and not in current use it should still count or keep kill count if traded out. Makes it useless if you want to use sheld as well. ..

                                                                                                                    Boulder Heave also doesn't get the Fire Trails effect despite being an offensive Pyromancy. This might occur due to its casting animation being the same as Poison Mist, Toxic Mist and Acid Surge.

                                                                                                                              Statement is false, i tested it at +10 with the pyromancer class with base 12 strength. black flame did 475ish dmg and sacred flame did 575 damage, at 35 int/faith. Also equipped were the 2 pyromancy rings with fire clutch ring.
                                                                                                                              The target was the golden winged knights above the grand archives.

                                                                                                                              After grinding enough souls to up my strength to 15, I tested it again and this time black flame did 889 damage (with the bonus hit from the parting flame and 689-ish without the bonus hit) and sacred flame did 1029 damage. All other stats and equipment remained the same, only strength was increase from 12 to 15.

                                                                                                                              Please change that statement after confirming.

                                                                                                                              • keep the flame equipped and out, then kill 12 enemies to charge it. Switching the flame for a shield or weapon will reset the counter, but two-handing a weapon in the opposite hand will not reset the counter.

                                                                                                                                12 kills only is very strong considering this game likes to throw a lot of enemies at you and don't forget about the random estus you get sometimes for killing any enemy as well.
