Storyteller's Staff is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

Staff of a heretic storyteller who shares tales of the Painted World to forlorn souls.

The storytellers, too, are wretched beings with no place to go. Their bodies, souls, and even their staves are all tainted through and through.

Skill: Poison Spores
Expel noxious spores from the formless, parasitical things that inhabit the staff.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Infused or Buffed.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • At 60 INT it has a spellbuff of 218.
  • The Weapon Art Poison Spores:
    • Does not scale with upgrade or Luck
    • Requires 12 Intelligence
    • Applies 42 Poison buildup per tick in cloud
    • Outclasses the Poison Mist and Toxic Mist pyromancies in buildup rate and damage
    • Applies a more powerful form of poison than all other sources.

  • The Poison Spores weapon art functions very similarly to the Poison Mist pyromancy. For a small FP cost, you raise your staff and emit a purple gas cloud a few meters in front of you. Poisons fairly quickly.
  • The poison damage from the weapon art is very unique. Like all poisons, it scales in damage dependant on the victim's maximum HP. The higher the maximum HP, the higher the poison damage. Unlike all other poison, however, the scaling is very noticeable. In all tests, the poison from the Storyteller's Staff did, at minimum, nearly three times the damage of all other Poisons, and scaled up rapidly to nearly four times the damage against bosses.
  • Tested on Corvians and the Crucifixion Woods Crabs, the poison from Storyteller's Staff did 4 damage per second to the Corvians, and 8 damage per second to the Giant Crabs. All other poisons did a consistent 3 damage per second.
  • Tested on Pontiff Sulyvahn, who is allegedly resistant against poison damage, regular poisons did 13 damage per second, the Toxic effect from Dung Pies did 23 damage per second, while the Storyteller's Staff poison did a very impressive 54 damage per second to him.
  • Storyteller Staff poison damage appears to be completely unaffected by Spell Buff, Intellegence, Luck, or by the Staff's upgrade level. This means that any character with at least 12 Intellect could use the Storyteller's Staff purely for the Poison weapon art. Considering how much stronger this weapon art is compared to regular poison, and how it scales so much against high healthed enemies, even to the point of doing more than double the damage Toxic does, this could be worth taking into consideration.
  • Like other staves, if one equips the staff on the left hand, the strong attack is replaced by weapon skill, allowing one to cast poison spore without holding the staff with both hands.

    • Strongest staff in the game? No.

Prettiest staff in the game? Hell no.

Most fun and incredibly useful staff in the game? 100%

The utility of the WA on this bad boy is tough to pass up. It trivializes mimics, enemies on the other side of walls, and some otherwise quite difficult bosses (as many previous comments have already mentioned). Throw Hidden Body into the mix and let the fun begin!

I struggled to kill the Crystal Sage in the Grand Archives in one go today until I tried this staff's Weapon Art. Toxic Mist did 24 damage; the Weapon Art did 54. I disregarded this item at first but now I'll definitly keep it. The information below is questionable.

After testing on multiple enemies, the spores do about middle damage between Poison Mist and Toxic Mist. Current version of the game on PC and on NG+1. Poison does between 7-11 on average, Toxic does between 20-25 on average and the spores does between 12-16 on average

Soo, this little staff can apply the equivalent of scarlet rot from elden ring, with only 12 Int, and you don't need to upgrade it? Awesome

            • Anonymous

I got this staff on my first character and on my first time going through the Road of Sacrifices. I had no idea it was so OP before searching about it later on. It has become my go to staff, the poison weapon art is insanely useful.

How does this combine with normal poison? If I use this to build an enemy's poison bar to 50% and then finish with a normal poison weapon, which poison will be applied, the strong one or the normal one?

                • Anonymous

Hi Wolnir, I really don't feel like fighting you today, so I'm just gonna exploit your vulnerability to poison. Do you happen to know anyone called Draconic Tree Sentinel, by the way? No? Alright.

Keep in mind every class is a scholar's ring away from using this, even a warrior with no attunement slots

This carried my sorcery build through Freide's fight.
(In second phaze, combined with Pestilent Mist which are both casted on Ariandel does an innane amount of damage)
I used Homing Soulmass to stun her/knock her out of her stupid invisibility, then rushed and spammed Farron sword. When she slowed down, I used the chance to stack the poison from this on her, which by itself could kill her if you're a dodging god (or less than 30 equipload+carthus blood ring).
Third phaze, as she's on the ground, cast Pestilent Mist then as she rises, the poison from this. She'll take a chunk of damage and take poison for the rest of the fight. Roll through her attacks then spam Farron sword. If you run out of FP and have Heysel Pick equipped as an extra tool, it actually does good damage alone too.

Great for offing the giant crabs easily first encounter just go to the farron bonfire, then when reentering the woods look slightly left to spot two small trees, get the crabs attention and get em stuck and poisoned
You need to keep hitting their big meaty claws to prevent burrowing, but their attacks are all locked on the trees and you can get their bubbles stuck right into the tree as well

Pretty good weapon i must say, almost half the bosses can be poisoned, it's a good pressure tool for pvp and you can just combine it with hidden body and cheese a good part of The enemies in this game.

                          • Anonymous

Great for my assassin build in the off-hand swap slot to keep the pressure on with one of the more potent poison saps, and doubles up as a staff for sneaking spells such as Spook and Hidden Body, while applying pressure up-close with fast bleed weapons, and a bow for mid-long range.
Might be far from the best, but doubles up for the stealth assassin type of run I'm going for.

Pretty good to use on Gael even on NG+++++
Just run around the broken wall with the arch and smoke him with this.

Hello everyone. It is my first DS game and I was a bit afraid of fighting the dancer fair and square, so I tried using the poison spores to cheese her. She went through the cloud 10 times without taking any damage. I tried embered and unembered with the same results. Poison mist did not work at all either. Has anyone already had the same experience? Am I doing anything bad?

                                • Anonymous

The Poison Spores will kill Mimics cheesily. They do'nt even get up. Just stand a few meters away, aim down, cast and watch their health go down.

This thing was the real mvp in my fight against Gael today. I never thought that there could be an impossible fight for me in these games (besides NG+ cycles 4 kings) but Gael proofed me otherwise. This Staff helped me so much! (And before you ask, I'm at level 420 something, so he hits hard. REALLY Hard!)

storyteller staff buildup is actually slower than poison mist from my test. tried both out against firekeeper and it takes like about a second of her inside the poison mist to get poisoned and a little bit longer than that in poison spores to get poisoned, though poison spores does deal more damage. can anyone else confirm this? i know in one of the patches they nerfed acid surge, maybe they nerfed poison spores as well?

                                      • Anonymous

I'm trying to use it, but my character doesn't know how to. Any advice? I have enough in Strength and Intelligence and using pyromancy. First time player

to summarise for anybody reading this in the future: this WA stacks with toxic (but not poison since that's what it builds up (yet is also better than standard poison)), and does best damage against enemies with large healthpools, as it's damage scales with the max hp of the enemy. against high-HP foes, like gael for example, this is far superior to toxic (but use both if you can). for more "conclusive" answers, i recommend you watch dangitjm's video on using poison in pvp/pve - https://youtu.be/QHNO7__TXJk - , or this video on the storyteller's staff specifically - https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ - . i would personally recommend dangitjm's video ;)

this page shows the staff having a Spell Buff of 60, but I was playing today and mine has a Spell Buff of 100

                                            • Anonymous

I upgraded the staff to +9 and my pyro hand to +9. Toxic mist hits the corvians outside the chapel in ashes for 22 ticks, and the staff for 9 ticks. Not even close, but the damage stacks, so it's still cool to use in combo with the mist. I wonder if the staffs WA got nerfed or perhaps I'm doing something wrong or not taking something else into account, for the info on this page to be correct. I'm interested to see if anyone can clear this up for me.

                                              • Anonymous

I'm not sure this info is accurate. I'm testing on enemies now using a +9 pyro hand and toxic mist, and the non upgraded STS and the toxic mist kills the Corvians at least x2 faster. I'm guessing that my 30 30 intel/faith with the upgraded pyro hand must be the difference. I still plan to use it because it apparently stacks with toxic mist. I saw a video of someone beating Gael just using this staff and the toxic mist pyro, it was crazy.

                                                • Anonymous

Just one thing to note. The Poison Spores damage only outclasses Toxic Mist on bosses or deep in NG+. Poison Spores starts at 10 damage/tic and grows quickly, Toxic Mist starts at 21 damage/tic and grows much slower. Also, Poison Spores goes up into the air whereas Toxic Mist stays near the ground. Very important depending on the size of your target, for example, you can't use Poison Spores on Mimics while they are pretending to be chests, but Toxic Mist hits them. Overall, Poison Spores is best on bosses, Toxic Mist is better for trash. Or, just Hidden Body and stack them both.

                                                  • Anonymous

Apparently (with some searching around on reddit and comments on wiki) the WA for this builds poison meter, not toxic. With this information you could use both this and toxic mist(the pyromancy) to quite a devastating effect, I'd imagine. Haven't tested this, but could be very useful info

                                                    • Anonymous

The Storyteller’s Staffs poison spores weapon art absolutely destroys bosses like Halflight and Gael. It’s dropped by the Corvian Storyteller‘s in the Road of Sacrifice area.

                                                      • Anonymous

Killing Gael with Harpy Farts. So glad I held onto one of these, I almost sold it because of the way the WA doesn’t level.

                                                        • 3/17/19 Update. Storytellers WA did 72 dmg p/t to Wolnor, Toxic Mist 35. Entrance to Smouldering like Mimic 17, Toxic Mist did 24. I won't bother with other results, Toxic Mist gets about double base in NG+, my guess is so it keeps up with HP increase. They didn't bother tweaking Scaling for ST WA. I'd like to think this was intentional but it means it'll be useless except on maybe 2 Bosses beyond NG++ defeating the point of even having it as a in-game option. Heck of a oversight.

                                                          • 3/16/19. Update; Tested Toxic Mist on first Mimic in Lothric in NG+. 23 p/t and S.T did 15. Will post back later with Cathedral Mimic and a few other tests. Should be noted this is the lowest HP Mimic but it may indicate there's a tiered scaling beyond NG.

                                                            • 2/26/2019. This is to clear up some misinformation and poor test results. Though this thing is not a magic "Red Button" when dealing with enemies it's incredibly useful when used correctly and tactically. Poison/Toxic Mist for example, it's damage does NOT scale like S.T W.A does. Poison Mist on Guru's around "Old King's Antechamber" Bonfire does 7 damage per tick. Storyteller's does 10 damage per tick. I won't give away anymore tricks but on certain enemies it does 40+ damage, though casting W.A, dodging and hitting build up means most never even try to find out.

                                                              • Anonymous

I liked the sound of this and was able to farm 2x of them in less than 15 minutes without any additional luck boosting items or equipment. On the latest patch however this item seems to do no greater damage than atleast poison mist however does poison faster but only by a marginal degree we're talking 15% if i'm being generous. If this is too much for you to read then here's an example. Enemy poisoned via the storytellers staff after 1m [ | | | | | | | | ] hp same -# per second Enemy poisoned via poison mist after 1m [ | | | | | | | | | | ] hp @ same -# per second

                                                                • Anonymous

I tested this myself. Poison spores FA is weaker than toxic mist. Toxic mist ticked for 1403 damage with a standard pyro glove +8, while poison spores with a base storyteller's staff and 12 int ticked for 1254 damage on the lothric spear knight upstairs from the dragon barracks on NG. Is there any way possible to boost the damage frodm either one?

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

You can cheese him with the wall and this staff, And if you want to use mercury spell, it burns through that healthbar. Also just for fun if your a badass and can pull it off the WA effectively in PVP cheers to you mate, it’s hilarious. Most people don’t keep toxic antidote on the belt espicially tryhards.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

The information above is false, about the poison damage on the staff. It is not "superior" to poison or toxic mist, except in the case of something with high hp. Poison spores scales drastically with the opponents maximum hp, so it USED to be better then poison mist, even in pvp. Now, it is quite a bit weaker (tested on players with roughly 2000 hp) then poison mist UNTIL the enemy has about 4000 hp or higher, which then it is marginally better. bosses like pontiff on higher NG's will make it scale much much higher, as high as 113 per tick, whereas normal poison mist will still be about 16-18 damage.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

Head's up this was nerfed, not sure when. Just tried it on several enemies and in every case it did less damage than the toxic from poop by a good amount. About 1/3 the damage per tick.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

This thing is a wonder vs Gael.
                                                                                      - Getting an application on phase 1 in probably hardest bit, may take a few casts due to his erratic movement.
                                                                                      - The toxic will be cleared when it transitions to phase 2
                                                                                      - In phase 2 just back peddle from him while dropping clouds. Gael's Crossbow can be dangerous due to the only cast time for the Toxic WA.
                                                                                      - Alternatively, separate yourself from the boss using indestructible parts of the terrain. The Toxic cloud should spawn on the other side of the object while he swings into it.

Ended up killing him with 2 applications + a few soul spears to clean up.
You could very realistically kill him using the Toxic Spores alone if you go for a third cast.

On a side note, as of 17/5/17- the damage vs Old Demon King seems to have been reduced, it now "only" deals about 40~50% of his life as opposed to 90% in a single application.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • After playing around with that staff just see that poisoning phantoms with it is really difficult, specially other players, did anyone managed to poison an opponent in a pvp match with this staff special?

Also, while being really good to kill some bosses (due the fact that damage it does scales with the boss HP) I found some bosses were close to impossible to get poisoned with it.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Little gas, run your butt off, and they WILL die. Time consuming, but isn't that better then banging your bleeping head over and over?

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Combine with Hidden Body and most things will die in one easy application. Knight Slayer Tsorig didn't last long. It's also not a bad staff in of itself, which is nice, but really you can often swap out in a lot of situations.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

At 9 Intelligence, using the weapon art does not release a cloud of spores despite costing FP.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

but a staff is a staff and so I'd like to know where it scales in the grand scheme of all the other staffs for spell-slinging.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

How well does this staff work against bosses? According to the wiki it did 54 dmg/sec on Pontiff and a previous comment stated that it last a massive amount of time. Does anyone know how long the spell last? To me it seems pretty OP just poison the boss then run away shooting great souls arrow at him.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Its higher than my mist spell coming off my +7 pyro hand. I'm not sure if that matters but still, I thought at first they buffed poison damage. I wonder if the art scales off the staff?

                                                                                                            • ...you're gonna get this weapon a lot whether you like it or not, since these same Corvians drop hollow gems with infuriating rarity. That said, I can see it being useful since it comes with poison mist basically. Seems like a neat toy to try, when I work around my disdain for it since I have to sell so many of them.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

The poison damage seems really low, but it lasts a massive amount of time. Great for larger enemies. Slowly whittles away their health and one application is likely to last the entire fight. Considering how nice this is I am really torn between this awesome special or another staff that has a higher spell buff.
