Armor Type Helms

Symbol of Avarice is a Helm in Dark Souls 3.

Head of the avaricious creature that mimics treasure chests. Can be worn, if one so wishes.

Increases soul absorption from defeated enemies as well as item discovery, but the curse of the branded also drains HP.

The very form of this creature is thought to be a form of brand, a punishment for sin.

Location/Where to Find

  • Rare drop from Mimic enemies.
  • Mimics can also "drop" the Symbol of Avarice (the item will appear in its mouth and be normally lootable) when throwing an Undead Hunter Charm at them, so the item can be easily and safely farmed without killing the Mimic. Each time a Mimic chest is put to sleep by the Undead Hunter's Charm it counts as a separate roll, so you do not need to rest at a bonfire each time and it is affected by Item Discovery. If nothing is dropped, you can also hit it once (be aware of damage) and it will reset faster.

Notes and Tips

  • Absorb 50% more Souls, adds 100 Item Discovery, lose 10 HP/s.
  • In App ver. 1.00 + Regulation ver. 1.00, the effect for gaining more Souls from defeated enemies, was not working. This has now been taken care of since App ver. 1.01 + Regulation ver. 1.01.
  • Can be used efficiently together with Covetous Silver Serpent Ring, Covetous Gold Serpent RingShield of Want, Crystal Sage's Rapier, Medicant's Staff, and either a Rusted Coin or a Rusted Gold Coin.
  • A good place to farm the Symbol of Avarice with Undead Hunter Charms is outside and to the left of Yhorm's boss room, as the two adjacent chests there are both mimics and within the area of effect of a single Charm (video)
  • Item discovery will affect the chances of a Mimic "dropping" the Symbol of Avarice whilst asleep, like with normal enemy drops.
  • The health drain is active at all times, so take care when interacting with merchants as it is fatal if left on for too long.
  • Has no interaction with Chameleon or Young White Branch.
  • The Bountiful Light miracle will reduce the health loss to negligible levels.
  • Prisoner's Chain has no affect on the health drain.
  • Has no affect when resting at a bonfire.

Guys, when you kill all the mimics in the game, if you return to where you kill the one with the Sunlight Straight Sword, before the Dragonslayer Armor Boss, there will be a shiny drop on the ground with the Symbol Of Avarice!

      • 25 May 2017 17:56

I have been farming all mimics in the game to test the DoA drop for an extended period of time, and I have come to the conclussion that every mimic only drop one SoA, and you can't have more than 7 in total.
This is only speculation, but I did use silver coins, covetous gold serpent ring, crystal sage's rapier and a symbol of avarice to farm them all, and after using about 200 undead hunter charms and silver coins it doesn't seem like they drop it anymore. The one in irithyll dungeon (where the curse lizards spawn) and further mimics didn't drop it, but the first one in lothric castle did, so it is not about location of the mimic, only number of items held by the player.
Saying I have spare time is a understatement, but I don't think you can get more than 7 in a single playthrough, though I haven't gone to NG+ on this PJ to see if the SoA "limit" carries on, or if you can pick up 7 more.

I got it randomly from a mimic in Irithyll Dungeon. If anyone is looking for it, i suggest you come there because there is a truckton of mimics within the dungeon.

What's the drop chance on these? Started a new character and I've got three of them and I'm not even at Lothric Castle so I'm just wondering how lucky I am.

I used over 40 undead hunter charms farming for this at the mimic in cathedral of the deep, then I ended up getting 2 more of the *****ing things at later points in the game. I haven't even put any levels into luck, wtf

Ich hab gleich 2 auf einmal bekommen, mit +300 Glück, mit goldener schlangenring +3, goldene münze und rostige münze, im raum neben Yorm wo die beiden mimics sind

I can confirm that a symbol of avarice, as a separate loot sphere, spawns at the very last mimic (I say "the very last", because it will be the last one you kill if you have never missed any mimics, since the game is relatively linear) in the building with the right-hand dragon atop of it after you've killed all 13 mimics. If you've missed any mimics before killing this mimic, so that this one is not the last of 13 mimics you kill, the symbol will still spawn at its spot when you kill the rest of the mimics eslsewhere, so it can be missed easily. MAYBE this is a semi-random thing, but it is a fact that I have picked up a symbol of avarice from that spot even though that mimic was long dead, because I've missed the mimic in the building atop of which left-hand dragon resides when I passed there for the first time. You still might want to farm it with undead hunter charms in case there is a chance of it not appearing after 13 mimic kills so that you are not *****ed. On the other hand, it's probably worth the risk, and in case it really is random and does not spawn for you, you can always just trade it. Check it out and reply if it worked or not, just be sure that you've killed all of the mimics beforehand.

Got this when first entering the smouldering lake area. The mimic chest in the room with the fire demon. I just stood in front of the chest, let the demon attack it then turned invisable lol they fought and the mimic lost.

Big chance to get Symbol of Avarice if the mimic is killed by a strong enemy like a mini boss. One way to do this is to locate the mimic in Catacombs of Carthus before going to Abandoned Tomb bonefire on your way to Smouldering Lake. You will encounter a mini-boss flame demon there too so just roll to the mimic and hit it once to wake him then roll away again. The demon will kill the mimic and it will drop the Black blade and the Symbol of Avarice. Try it and report back.

What I normally do with this item (and similar soul+ items, such as Shield of Want and Silver Covetous Serpent Ring) is I toss them on the moment I beat a boss. The lag between the final strike and actual soul reward is pretty long (I've counted between 5 to 10 seconds) which is more than enough time to swap in at least one of those items, (particularly the Symbol of Avarice) and get the soul boost.

Pro tip: When you're 'farming' for the symbol(s) of avarice with Undead Hunter Charms, MAKE SURE to run into the mimic from every side and for a couple of second. Check thoroughly for "pick up item" notification all around it.
The reason why, is that sometimes Symbol of Avarice is dropped 'in the middle' of the mimic, i.e. inside, as if he died and dropped the item. Problem is, he's still alive and fairly large, so the item is obstructed from the front, and unless you check every angle you might not even notice that the item dropped let alone is possible to pick up.

Found it out after wasting 30 charms on one mimic with no symbol of ava drop (at 157 item discovery), then on a different mimic got it on my 10th charm (at 207 item discovery)

So I wasn't thinking when I was in the profaned capital and killed both the mimics and now I'm farming proof of conquered kept I mean I'm getting the golden serpent ring and have rusted golden coins so I guess that makes up for it lol

So, I started a new character last night for *****s and giggles, and the very first mimic I encounter, the one under the dragon on the wall with the dark axe inside, drops it. I didn't do anything special, didn't have a crazy amount of luck or anything. So, am I just lucky? lol
