Armor Type Helms

Symbol of Avarice is a Helm in Dark Souls 3.

Head of the avaricious creature that mimics treasure chests. Can be worn, if one so wishes.

Increases soul absorption from defeated enemies as well as item discovery, but the curse of the branded also drains HP.

The very form of this creature is thought to be a form of brand, a punishment for sin.

Location and Where to Find

  • Rare drop from Mimic enemies.
  • Mimics can also "drop" the Symbol of Avarice (the item will appear in its mouth and be normally lootable) when throwing an Undead Hunter Charm at them, so the item can be easily and safely farmed without killing the Mimic. Each time a Mimic chest is put to sleep by the Undead Hunter's Charm it counts as a separate roll, so you do not need to rest at a bonfire each time and it is affected by Item Discovery. If nothing is dropped, you can also hit it once (be aware of damage) and it will reset faster.

Notes and Tips

  • Absorb 50% more Souls, adds 100 Item Discovery, lose 10 HP/s.
  • If a player intends to go away from their game and is not rested at a bonfire the head piece will continually kill the player in an infinite cycle so take care to spend all souls or simply remove the gear.
  • Can be used efficiently together with Covetous Silver Serpent Ring, Covetous Gold Serpent RingShield of Want, Crystal Sage's Rapier, , Mendicant's Staff and either a Rusted Coin or a Rusted Gold Coin.
  • A good place to farm the Symbol of Avarice with Undead Hunter Charms is outside and to the left of Yhorm's boss room, as the two adjacent chests there are both mimics and within the area of effect of a single Charm (video)
  • Item discovery will affect the chances of a Mimic "dropping" the Symbol of Avarice whilst asleep, like with normal enemy drops.
  • The health drain is active at all times, so take care when interacting with merchants as it is fatal if left on for too long.
  • Has no interaction with Chameleon or Young White Branch.
  • The Bountiful Light miracle will reduce the health loss to negligible levels. The Bountiful Sunlight miracle will restore health faster than the symbol can take it especially when stacked with any other health restoring effect such as the Sun Princess Ring.
  • Prisoner's Chain has no affect on the health drain.
  • Calamity Ring has no effect on the health drain.
  • Has no effect when resting at a bonfire.

Has anyone managed to break this item (aka put its durability to 0) to see how it looks? My new thing is to break all my favorite sets of armor to see how they look (I only just discovered that broken armor had different looks), but this thing has 500 durability so even with an optimal armor breaking strat it'd take a lot of time, but what I fear is that I won't be able to break it before it breaks me due to the health drain. I've tried fininding pics of it but to no avail, so if anyone knows if it's worth my time please let me know.

      • I just begin the game for the first time and killed the mimic in lothric wall and he gave me two symbols.

Okay for real now, for the people farming with undead charms, you have to wait to check for the item AFTER his initial wake sequence, wait till his teeth bend backwards a little, that's when the item roll occurs.

Here's a guaranteed way to get it:
          1) Find a mimic where there are no or less enemies from the nearest bonfire
          2) Use a pale tongue at Rosario s bed chambers and put all your levels into Luck (mine was 84 when I did this)
          3) Carry undead hunter charms
          4) Equip Gold Serpent Ring
          5) Equip Crystal Sages Rapier
          6) Use a Rusted Gold Coin
          7) Throw the undead hunter charm at the mimic and you will get the Helm on your first try

Here to confirm that you can in fact find it by quitting and reloading over and over again if you have already killed all the mimics. I found it at shared grave after 10-15 reloads (my game bugged out and the shrine handmaid wouldn't sell undead hunter charms so I had to get it this way lol).

I’ve been farming this thing for an hour at Chapel. It can drop there after I get the tome from that same mimic, right? In other words, they can multiple drop?

                  • Anonymous

Best place to farm is the one mimic on the second floor of Pontiff's Boss room, just take the elevator from the bonfire and there's the mimic, not a single enemy and easy to reset. Just remember to hit the mimic after hunter charm for faster reset as the guide mentioned.

Quick question, how do you know if the mimic dropped the symbol of avarice before you pick the items dropped ? And if you loot a mimic chest without killing it, can you re-loot it after quitting the game ?

Backstabbing stops the life drain for the length of the animation. Don't know about the reposting animation though.

it isnt mentioned here but the mimic at hihg wall of lothric has the highest chance of dropping it i recomend not killing the mimic until you can buy hunter charms it often only takes 5 min to get it.

Just found one in the Shared Grave in the spot where the mimic was at after killing it and revisiting the area later on. Think I killed all of them this playthrough, so I think one does spawn if you kill em all and then reload the area.

Can you out heal the damage from the mimic head? Like wear 2 health regen weapons or shields qnd the regen ring all 3 together to cancel out the damage?

Also how mutch damage does it give the player? Like 10 damge per second?

                              • Anonymous

For anyone who is struggling to get it after killing all mimics, go to the last one you killed or where the sunlight sword is (this one always worked for me).

Equip all item discovery items you have and just keep quitting and reloading. It should appear where the mimic used to be.

fastest way I have found to get this is in the abandoned tomb, kill the demon, run along the wall so boney bois don't chase after you, and shoot your narcotics. just got it for the first time after 2 years of playing with this

I got it my very first time killing a mimic in DS3. First Dark Souls game too, came here to look at what this item was all about and it's quite rare apparently. How fortunate haha.

Somehow, I killed all mimic in the game including the dlc but I still don't get this headpiece.. I try again at NG+, but I still don't get it..

Got the damn thing from a mimic in the first area. On my second Hunter's Charm that I also got in the first area. Feels good, man.

50+ hunter charms on the mimic down the stairs in the Cathedral of the Deep and absolutely nothing, 18 luck + Crystal Sage Rapier in offhand for extra item discovery. How fun.

This with Harald's Legion Armor... this is the highest peak of fashion souls. It would've been nice if Symbol of Avarice also raised Luck by 99 when equipped, so you can build a regeneration build and actually be able to give some use to the Man-Grub Staff.

After looking at this and the DS1 wiki i have discovered that they made some changes to the Symbol of Avarice compared to the one in the original.
In the original Dark Souls the health drain was 5 instead of 10 and you gained 200 item discovery instead of 100, but they increased the soul gain to 50% instead of 20%

I used an undead hunter charm on the mimic under High Lord Wolnir and got it first try! I am so excited to try it out farming the black knight, but I'm not sure if I can really last that long... Could somebody tell me how to not die when using this? Thanks.

                                                • Anonymous

You can still obtain this item even if you have killed ALL mimics and have not acquired the Symbol of Avarice.

I went to the last mimic of my game (in my case, Ringed City). I quit and reload the game. The Symbol of Avarice item spawned where the mimic should have been.

Getting an ending might affect the quit and reload "bug". The Symbol of Avarice did not spawn before I did an ending. After I did an ending, I went back to the mimic spawn point, quit and reload, and the Symbol of Avarice was there.

                                                  There is hope!

(In case this may affect anything, I'm playing in PC. I just killed a boss in Ringed City before I did the quit and reload "bug". There is still a boss I have yet to kill in Ringed City.)

                                                  • Anonymous

Got that from first mimic at beginning of the game behind the dragon at high wall of lothric on my very first playthrough, didn't know that this hat was rare.. Now I have 2 of those.

                                                    • Anonymous

After defeating Gael just found one in the Tower (this rounded with twinkle lizard) in Ringed City. Just went there to cach this lizard. So no need to farm this :)
There is no info about that on wiki. Maybe it was because firstly uccidentaly I made Lapp hostile. He was hostile until I defeat the Gael. After that Lapp was friendly and I talked to him and then go to mentioned Tower.

If I take the item that was in the mouth (if it wasn’t the symbol of avarice) can I still get it? Or since I took an item now I can’t get it?

                                                        • Have a functional question about the charm usage. Do I have to hit the mimic and put it to sleep and do I have to go back to the bonfire and reset, or can I just sweep all charms on the mimic w/o activating the mimic?

                                                          • Anonymous

boss has 10% HP, im putting this helmet, kill the boss, got extra souls feelsgoodman.
my friend came to my house, the boss already dead so whatever i dont need to quit the game.
                                                            we talk, he left.
i came back, realise what just happened feelsbadman.

For anyone that's killed all the mimics and still no drop, go to the where the mimic with Sunlight Straight Sword drops at lothric Castle, it should eventually be there. You may have to rest at the bonfire to reset the area and check again. I had to rinse and repeat this about 5 times with a discovery of 207 to eventually see it there waiting for me.

It's possible kill all mimics and don't get the Symbol Of Avarice? And now, only in my next NG cycle i can get it?

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • I love how almost every single person in this comments section is either asking to trade with someone else for one, or saying that it happened to drop for them at [insert location here]

                                                                        • Anonymous

This took me roughly 120 attempts with Rapier, Base Gold Serpent Ring, 7 Luck and 7 Rusted Gold Coins and however many Rusted Coins, so 307 to 257 item discovery. I'm going to share what I wish I knew at the beginning. First off, and by far most importantly, Mimic positions do NOT reset on using a bonfire. This information is present on the enemy wiki page but is more relevant here. It could have saved a LOT of skeletons from pointlessly pulling themselves together today. Secondly, Mimics "remember" their state prior to being charmed and attacked. If you put it to sleep while it was camouflaged, hitting it will put him back into that state. If he was up and gunning for your asshole when you put him to sleep, he'll wake up all hot and bothered. And lastly, you don't need to wait for the mimic to wake up to use the next charm on him. As soon as you whack him awake, if you throw the charm, he'll immediately fall asleep after the waking up animation completes. This animation is shorter if he was never aggressive towards you. I only learned that it wasn't a guaranteed drop in this playthrough because I got it in the dungeon sewers in my first, ignorant of my dumb luck. Luckily I had missed the one just before smouldering lake on this run. If I knew what I knew now I would aggro the one under the dragon on High Wall, lure it to the nearby bonfire as far from the stairs as possible, charm it, whack it, run away, come back to it once it'd given up the chase, and hope he sat down in the optimal position before I started throwing smoke and slaps at him. Happy hunting and good *****ing luck.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

hi, I just found out that the Symbol of Avarice can actually be found in lothric castle. it will spawn on the floor where the last mimic would sit if you have kill everyone of them in the game. in this link go to the bottom of tips and strategies, the last mimic is considered the one where the black dragon is located.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Doing a run to get all collectibles as a new build and i had to use sage's soul to make a spell so i don't get the discovery buff and the drop rate is killing me. Not to mention i really need it to farm all the other covenant items, was hoping it would be easy to get. I'm running out of coins :(

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Never found in ds1, but I found it in blind run killing a mimic before yorm with 109 discovery, so happy =D

                                                                                        • Anonymous

I got mine 1st try from pontiff, didn't realize the mimic drops it's "head" just grab the rapier, and pop BOTH COINS

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Odd that it's a random drop in this one. How rare is it really? I got 3 on my first playthrough and just thought it was weird that they would give you 3 of them (thinking it was a guaranteed drop from those mimics).

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Easiest way to get this early: 1. Ignore the mimic under the wyvern at Lothric wall entirely 2. Get Transposing Kiln 3. Get Crystal Sage's Rapier 4. Get Paladin's Ashes 5. Buy a few dozen Undead Hunter Charms 6. Go back to the mimic under the wyvern, equip the rapier, crack a coin (you should have some by now) and start charming the mimic. Repeat until satisfied. I've done this with multiple characters now and it usually hasn't taken very many runs from the nearest bonfire to get the helm (once I got it on the first try with the axe). There's only one hollow that will get in your way if even that if you just wait for the knight to stomp away. Do keep in mind that you have to wait for a moment for a possible drop to appear when using the charm. If you slap the mimic too early to reset him, he'll "swallow" the helm. If that happens you might even get a split second notice to pick up the item and then it's gone and you'll have to start charming it again.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

if you don't get it after killing all the mimics, go to the last one you kill, reload the game (some people say up to 2 times) and it'll be there.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

I literally got it on my first run through (new player here) and I thought it was ugly so I never really paid it any attention LMAO

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I earned this item by doing the Lapp questline from the Ringed City DLC. See Lapp's page for details (spoilers).

                                                                                                    • If you didn't get it off the first mimic under the dragon and still want one fairly early, head to the Cathedral of the Deep. It works out pretty good because on the way you go fight the Crystal Mage boss, which you can use it's soul to turn in to the Crystal Rapier, which will boost your item discovery by 50. Also the next bonfire has the NPC to the left with the Paladin Ashes near them, which allows you to by Undead Hunter Charms (to loot mimics without killing it). Also in the CotD, you can do the Patches questline and get him in Firelink Shrine to buy Rusted Coins, which will raise your Item Discovery by another 50. So my method was by 5 UHC, 10 Rusted Coins, have the Crystal Rapier equipped in my off hand, and some Homeward Bones to shave some time. When you get to the mimic, have the rapier equipped, use a coin, and throw an UHC. Wait around 5-10 seconds, if it doesn't drop, punch it with an unequipped fist to wake it up and set it back to a chest. Throw another UHC and repeat. I'd say I was able to use 3 UHC with one coin, so 2 coins overall. After using all 5 charms, use the homeward bone to either pop back to Firelink Shrine to restock on supplies, or if you have excess in your storage, homeward back to the CotD bonefire, rest to refill, and repeat the process.

                                                                                                      • I got this real early (and within 5 tries but maybe its luck) as soon as I reach High Wall of Lothric. I read all I could about getting this so its not something I discovered. So start with Rusted Gold Coin burial gift. Get the x2 Undead Hunter Charm (UHC) at High Wall of Lothric. Having gathered the UHCs I head to the mimic under the dragon. Use the Gold Coin. Hit the mimic and as soon as it starts to get up, throw the UHC at it. It will go to sleep. You get the Deep Battle Axe. If the Symbol of Avarice doesn't come with the Deep Battle Axe, hit the sleeping mimic again after ~10 secs. Throw the last UHC at it as soon as it tries to stand up again. It will sleep again and if you're lucky, the Symbol will appear. Just two tries though coz there's only two UHC at High Wall of Lothric. Its reload, rinse and repeat. I expected it to be tedious but luckily I got it on my third reload. Good luck farming.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

On boss fights, can you fight with regular headgear, make the kill, and switch to Symbol of Avarice right before you collect your souls? Does that work or do you have to make the kill wearing the symbol?

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Ok - i don't know if this was mentioned jet, but it happened to me twice now.
I farmed it with the UHC in NG but in NG++ i was actually able to kill two mimics just before the sleep animation was over. And both dropped it - and i used no special farming equipment - just wulf curved sword and pontiffs rings so every attack gets stronger an u can deal 3k dmg before it goes to sleep again.

So yeah - happened twice now and i just want to get confirmation if anybody could reproduce this.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

you can get mimics loot without killing them, first strike him then UHC when he stands up, rinse and repeat until you get regular loot or symbol of avarice. with striking him first you get better chance i suppose, i did 20 runs with first UHC then strike and nothing dropped and 2 runs with strike then UHC and first loot second avarice

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

The BEST thing just happened to me. I was farming with UHCs to get a Symbol of Avarice at the Profaned Capital, since there are 2 Mimics back-to-back which allows me to use 1 UHC and roll twice. I got my first and second SOA at the same time, from using one UHC.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

After getting the gold serpent ring, I go back to the first mimic in the game (tower on the wall bonfire, under dragon) after having used a charm to open it earlier, and got the symbol on the first try of attempting to farm it. It's happened twice now, with 10 and 13 base luck. Can anyone else confirm this?

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Break the bridge, run to the chest, use a Rusted Coin, throw the Undead Hunter Charm, run the rim of the chest hitting A, let him return to chest form after 30 seconds (UHA lasts 60) throw another charm, check again, use another coin & repeat. Use Homeward miracle AND rest at the bonfire afterwards after every 4 Charms. 2 charms per Coin.
