Symbol of Avarice is a Helm in Dark Souls 3.

Head of the avaricious creature that mimics treasure chests. Can be worn, if one so wishes.

Increases soul absorption from defeated enemies as well as item discovery, but the curse of the branded also drains HP.

The very form of this creature is thought to be a form of brand, a punishment for sin.

Location and Where to Find

  • Rare drop from Mimic enemies.
  • Mimics can also "drop" the Symbol of Avarice (the item will appear in its mouth and be normally lootable) when throwing an Undead Hunter Charm at them, so the item can be easily and safely farmed without killing the Mimic. Each time a Mimic chest is put to sleep by the Undead Hunter's Charm it counts as a separate roll, so you do not need to rest at a bonfire each time and it is affected by Item Discovery. If nothing is dropped, you can also hit it once (be aware of damage) and it will reset faster.

Notes and Tips

  • Absorb 50% more Souls, adds 100 Item Discovery, lose 10 HP/s.
  • If a player intends to go away from their game and is not rested at a bonfire the head piece will continually kill the player in an infinite cycle so take care to spend all souls or simply remove the gear.
  • Can be used efficiently together with Covetous Silver Serpent Ring, Covetous Gold Serpent RingShield of Want, Crystal Sage's Rapier, , Mendicant's Staff and either a Rusted Coin or a Rusted Gold Coin.
  • A good place to farm the Symbol of Avarice with Undead Hunter Charms is outside and to the left of Yhorm's boss room, as the two adjacent chests there are both mimics and within the area of effect of a single Charm (video)
  • Item discovery will affect the chances of a Mimic "dropping" the Symbol of Avarice whilst asleep, like with normal enemy drops.
  • The health drain is active at all times, so take care when interacting with merchants as it is fatal if left on for too long.
  • Has no interaction with Chameleon or Young White Branch.
  • The Bountiful Light miracle will reduce the health loss to negligible levels. The Bountiful Sunlight miracle will restore health faster than the symbol can take it especially when stacked with any other health restoring effect such as the Sun Princess Ring.
  • Prisoner's Chain has no affect on the health drain.
  • Has no affect when resting at a bonfire.

hi, I just found out that the Symbol of Avarice can actually be found in lothric castle. it will spawn on the floor where the last mimic would sit if you have kill everyone of them in the game. in this link go to the bottom of tips and strategies, the last mimic is considered the one where the black dragon is located.

Doing a run to get all collectibles as a new build and i had to use sage's soul to make a spell so i don't get the discovery buff and the drop rate is killing me. Not to mention i really need it to farm all the other covenant items, was hoping it would be easy to get. I'm running out of coins :(

Odd that it's a random drop in this one. How rare is it really? I got 3 on my first playthrough and just thought it was weird that they would give you 3 of them (thinking it was a guaranteed drop from those mimics).

Easiest way to get this early: 1. Ignore the mimic under the wyvern at Lothric wall entirely 2. Get Transposing Kiln 3. Get Crystal Sage's Rapier 4. Get Paladin's Ashes 5. Buy a few dozen Undead Hunter Charms 6. Go back to the mimic under the wyvern, equip the rapier, crack a coin (you should have some by now) and start charming the mimic. Repeat until satisfied. I've done this with multiple characters now and it usually hasn't taken very many runs from the nearest bonfire to get the helm (once I got it on the first try with the axe). There's only one hollow that will get in your way if even that if you just wait for the knight to stomp away. Do keep in mind that you have to wait for a moment for a possible drop to appear when using the charm. If you slap the mimic too early to reset him, he'll "swallow" the helm. If that happens you might even get a split second notice to pick up the item and then it's gone and you'll have to start charming it again.

if you don't get it after killing all the mimics, go to the last one you kill, reload the game (some people say up to 2 times) and it'll be there.

I earned this item by doing the Lapp questline from the Ringed City DLC. See Lapp's page for details (spoilers).

If you didn't get it off the first mimic under the dragon and still want one fairly early, head to the Cathedral of the Deep. It works out pretty good because on the way you go fight the Crystal Mage boss, which you can use it's soul to turn in to the Crystal Rapier, which will boost your item discovery by 50. Also the next bonfire has the NPC to the left with the Paladin Ashes near them, which allows you to by Undead Hunter Charms (to loot mimics without killing it). Also in the CotD, you can do the Patches questline and get him in Firelink Shrine to buy Rusted Coins, which will raise your Item Discovery by another 50. So my method was by 5 UHC, 10 Rusted Coins, have the Crystal Rapier equipped in my off hand, and some Homeward Bones to shave some time. When you get to the mimic, have the rapier equipped, use a coin, and throw an UHC. Wait around 5-10 seconds, if it doesn't drop, punch it with an unequipped fist to wake it up and set it back to a chest. Throw another UHC and repeat. I'd say I was able to use 3 UHC with one coin, so 2 coins overall. After using all 5 charms, use the homeward bone to either pop back to Firelink Shrine to restock on supplies, or if you have excess in your storage, homeward back to the CotD bonefire, rest to refill, and repeat the process.

I got this real early (and within 5 tries but maybe its luck) as soon as I reach High Wall of Lothric. I read all I could about getting this so its not something I discovered. So start with Rusted Gold Coin burial gift. Get the x2 Undead Hunter Charm (UHC) at High Wall of Lothric. Having gathered the UHCs I head to the mimic under the dragon. Use the Gold Coin. Hit the mimic and as soon as it starts to get up, throw the UHC at it. It will go to sleep. You get the Deep Battle Axe. If the Symbol of Avarice doesn't come with the Deep Battle Axe, hit the sleeping mimic again after ~10 secs. Throw the last UHC at it as soon as it tries to stand up again. It will sleep again and if you're lucky, the Symbol will appear. Just two tries though coz there's only two UHC at High Wall of Lothric. Its reload, rinse and repeat. I expected it to be tedious but luckily I got it on my third reload. Good luck farming.

On boss fights, can you fight with regular headgear, make the kill, and switch to Symbol of Avarice right before you collect your souls? Does that work or do you have to make the kill wearing the symbol?

Ok - i don't know if this was mentioned jet, but it happened to me twice now.
I farmed it with the UHC in NG but in NG++ i was actually able to kill two mimics just before the sleep animation was over. And both dropped it - and i used no special farming equipment - just wulf curved sword and pontiffs rings so every attack gets stronger an u can deal 3k dmg before it goes to sleep again.

So yeah - happened twice now and i just want to get confirmation if anybody could reproduce this.

you can get mimics loot without killing them, first strike him then UHC when he stands up, rinse and repeat until you get regular loot or symbol of avarice. with striking him first you get better chance i suppose, i did 20 runs with first UHC then strike and nothing dropped and 2 runs with strike then UHC and first loot second avarice
