Awakening 25 (-/-)

Rose of Ariandel is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

A flail used by the bulbous Father of the Painted World to shred his own skin, producing blood to appease the flame. Both a weapon and a miracle catalyst.

Ariandel, being the restorer of the Painted World, knew that it was painted with blood, and only blood could protect the secret.

Skill: Awakening

Violently flail oneself to trigger an awakening that temporarily boosts the strength of miracles, just as the good Father used the rose himself.

Notes and Tips:

  • Not Buffable nor Infusable.
  • Upgrades with Titanite Scales.
  • Casts Miracles on strong attack.
  • Faith scaling softcaps at 40 for casting and physical damage.
  • At 40 Faith, the total Spellbuff is 189.
  • Despite being classified as a whip weapon, it has the moveset of a small club; however, it cannot backstab or riposte just like the other whips. It has no strong attacks, but can still do a jump attack.
  • As of update 1.33, all of this weapon's attacks are now unparriable just like other whip weapons. However, it no longer has poise on its two-handed attacks.
  • Its design is based off of a Cat o' nine tails, a multi-tailed whip used for corporal punishment.
  • Its weapon art boosts Miracle damage by ~25% and lasts for two minutes.
  • Has a true combo into force, but cannot true combo into ANY other miracle.

This weapon is a must on a pure faith build. Biggest downside is the buff takes too long to use reliably PVP, but a prepared invader can get it off and use HP regen to recover the lost health before the fight begins. This weapons primary use is to buff miracles and throw people off with Lightning and Force miracles. Personally, I primarily use it for the buff on a pure faith build, the damage it provides is insane especially paired with lightning miracles. I've helped many a host defeat Midir with this weapons health. Overall, pretty unique weapon and a cool addition to the game.

The Rose of Ariandel looks pretty similar to a Cat o’ Nine Tails, a flail weapon with sharp objects attached to the whip part of the flail. In the Gospels of Jesus Christ, that weapon was used by Roman centurions who took part in Jesus’ torture. Makes sense, if you’re going for a Jesus cosplay, a centurion cosplay or just simply using this weapon on a Pure-Faith build; that being said, the Rose of Ariandel & the Chime of Filianore are my personal favourites as far as miracle-casting goes, but the fact that the miracle boost on this weapon stacks with nearly every type of miracle is just incredible.

Does the buff disappear if you put the weapon away? Could i put this in a slot, buff and switch to my chime?

Pyromancers get the demon scar, a top-rated pvp scimitar with pure fire damage, that true combos into its own weapon art and black flame

Sorcerers get the Heysel pick, a catalyst with competitive spellbuff, great rollcatch ability, and several powerful spell combos of its own like Old Moonlight, Soul Greatsword, and Heavy Soul Arrow

And for miracle enjoyers, there's the Rose, and, uh... Er... Hmm. Well. It can't be parried.

            • Anonymous

Surprisingly decent for 1v1 pvp. Fast enough attacks, decent damage, decent range.

              Unparryable? Yes

              Shits on shields? Yes

For a hybrid weapon/talisman, it's pretty damn fun, lol.

Only dumb fat Casuls would use such a trash weapon!
                PKCS is so much better!
Real Pros and skilled players only ever use PKCS, the best weapon gaming history!

Pretty sure the L2 is a reference to berserk, on the beggining of chapter 17 theres a character called farnese who does the same thing as a way of asking for forgiveness from god

One of my good friends is a parry god in this game so I whipped out this bad boy and another off-hand whip. He hasn't spoken to me since :(

By 'violently flail' I thought it meant the dance of the channeler's trident but more vigorous. But what happened was rather kinky.

ah yes, I come to a wiki page for details on a weapon and you don't even tell me anything about the weapon art other than what the game already says. thank you fextralife.

Rose buff + Banner buff + 2 miracle rings + LightningClut ring = Lightning Stake hits like real lightning

i use it in invasions with a glass cannon faith build. i call it the "EVIL SOLAIRE". most of the times casuls are so passive that they watch you whip yourself and dont even react lol. they probably freak out, then watch their friends get 1 shot by sunlight spear. man, i love that build...

I rece tky got this weapon since I'm going for a Fth/dex Paladin build In ds3 but I can't help but wonder if this weqpon is worth upgrading realy :/ i plan on using buffing and offensive miracles, so please, help would be appreciated, and if trolls wanna troll they are welcome, but please refrain from it would also be appreciated

Does anyone realize that this may be a reference to Farnese de Vandimion's first meeting/torturing of guts where she literally whips herself to strengthen her faith in God? Miyazaki is a massive berserk fan so I wouldnt be surprised if this was a nod to berserk

Was looking to activate Red Tearstone Ring to enter a state I have dubbed “MAXIMUM DANGER” and whipped myself to death ._.

I kept thinking imagine how hard this fight would be if Father Ariandel actually got his flail first. Just read the item description... He hits himself for ritual blood? That's just a whole nother level of creepy

You know what's the best thing about this weapon? You can beat the shhit outta noobs while they're busy whipping themselves LOL! Pure profit! Idiots keep using this shhit HAHA

I used to have an Irithill Straight Sword for roll catching on my greathammer build, but casting miracles was always cumbersome as a result. Not only is this better at roll-catching (longer range) but now I have no reason for a second weapon and can save on dexterity investment and carry weight. This thing is a beast on your offhand.

This is a huge buff, much bigger than Sacred Oath and it lasts a lot longer, even when switched out for a different Chime. With Ring of the Sun's First Born, Morne's Ring, Lightning clutch Ring, and the Crystal Chime +5 casting Sunlight Spear, at 50 Faith, against the Lothric Knight, I got 1064 dmg with no buffs, 1170 with only Sacred Oath, and 1293 with only the Flail Buff. adding them together along with Power Within, I reached 1707 dmg!

                                          • Anonymous

                                            Rose of Ariandel Spell Buff - 189 x .95(buff damage) = 179.55 x (1.0 + 0.25 (weapon art boost) + 0.20 (ring of the suns first born) + 0.12 (mornes ring) + 0.08 (lightning or magic clutch ring PVP)) = 292.5 damage added on via Lightning/Dark Moon Blade. Lightning Infused Splitleaf +10 = 607 damage (40 str, 40 dex, 40 faith) vs Sharp Infused Splitleaf +10 = 515 damage + 293 = 808 damage.

It is actually designed more similarly to the Scourge or the Knout which were used in religious practices as penance or as a method of execution. The "Cat-o-nine" was a single with with multiple softer leather falls that did not have barbs or knots.

                                              • Anonymous

I combine it's effects with Sunlight Straight Sword weapon art to cast Dhory's Gnawing or Divine Pillars of Light. It brings nice effects. Can't give exact numbers right now, but hurts the enemies like hell.

                                                • Anonymous

Omg I just tested this weapon and the buff "awakening" added almost 300 damage points to "wrath of the gods". It's a pretty substantial buff!

                                                  • Anonymous

Pyros get demon scar while where sitting here stuck with this, fashion souls generally hates miracle builds.

                                                    • Anonymous

Good in dark/pyro builds soft capping at 40 Fai. This opens up Lightning Arrow and Lightning Blade with a decent spell buff on its own. Buffing then swapping catalyst can get you more cast speed or spell buff. Optimally for PvE, you'd buff with this WA offhand then swap it to a Saint-tree Bellvine for cast speed, and cast LAs from a Crystal Chime in your main hand. It's great for phase 1 of NK, Midir, and Gail. Caitha Chime Dorhys' Gnawing in phase 2 of NK and phase 2&3 Friede. Phase 1 Friede I always just parry/riposte or backstab. Throw Story Teller's Staff WA on Gael and then cast buffed arrows. Such ease vs anime bosses. In PvP, just using this as a weapon is farly good in the right situations. Dorhys' Gnawing will do better dark damage with a Caitha Chime, but the 210 bleed application doesn't scale with anything. High bleed resist enemies will still get proc'ed on after a swing or two of this and a cast. Lightning Arrow is really the only Miracle I'd cast in PvP as a dark/pyro build other than Dorhys' and then I probably wouldn't because it depends more on miracle rings than Dorhys' does. Potentially would just as a mix-up, but idk.

                                                      • Anonymous

Out of curiosity, I tried out the weapon art buff on the Pus O'Man enemies in the Consumed King's Garden since they have pretty high health pools. Testing without any miracle-boosting rings and with the Canvas Talisman +10, the damage of Sunlight Spear increases by 124.7%, with Morne's only 123.9%, with Ring of the Sun's First born only 123.5%, and with both 121.4%. The buff lasts for 2 minutes and even after you switch for another weapon, but the Lingering Dragoncrest Ring has no effect on its duration. > After playing with it as an secondary, I found that the weapon art is REALLY worth having if you use lightning miracles for PvE and invasions (since the duration is pretty damn long). Make no mistake, this is the miracle-caster's Scholar's Candlestick. > Other fun facts: the ends of the whip are reminiscent of Father Ariandel hands during the cutscene of the boss, earning it the nickname "Daddy's Backscratcher," casting Lightning Arrow with it and holding it makes the bow look like it has dreadlocks, and given the game's physics, it is probably the most fun weapons to block spam when two-handing.

Ahh lord I'm so disappointed...not to this hybrid, I haven't made it to dlc yet but I'd rock t that***** if I was casting when I got there. Doing qlty buid 1st playthrough ...anyways I'm disappointed that we never got our big ass flail. Thanks From...this may be my first playthrough of ds3, but I've put hundreds, maybe thousands, of hours in (order I played in) Bloodborne, dark souls 2 sotfs, demon's souls, now (FINALLY! !) since it got remastered dark souls. I finally played in order I got to ds3, was really hoping I may possibly see a freaking Iron flail. Everything is released now we'll never know that special feeling you'd get from smashing some guy's head in with a chained piece of iron.....

                                                          • Wish there were more weapon-catalyst hybrids for miracles. Sorceries have like 4 of them and staves are actual weapons, for miracles we only have this crappy thing

                                                            • Anonymous

FYI, you can completely switch out to another Miracle Catalyst and still get the benefit. Eg. Lifehunt Scythe with Sunless Talisman hit for 751. I switched to this, used weapon art, then switched back to Sunless Talisman and it hit for 918.

                                                              • Anonymous

I freakin love this weapon in PvE. It swings fast enough to prevent Hodrick from chugging, stunlocks almost everything until you run out of stamina and can easily break guard of a catheral knight's greatshield, plus it's also a miracle caster.

                                                                • Anonymous

Does wonders for my Jesus build! It's a Fth / Lck regenerator that focuses on healing the faithful and asswhopping with Anri's

                                                                  • Anonymous

Note that you need to meet the stat requirements for the WA to do more than hurt yourself. Buff seems to be around 25% and lasts about two minutes.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I think the strong attack of this is underrated. Its also a shame that people have to choose between this and the scythes because they're both great

                                                                      • Just a word of warning for duelers out there, people WILL rush you and kill you while your doing your weapon art. For some reason this flail not only awakens your miracles but also awakens the rise of the Scum. (See what I did there)

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

Rose of ariandel will hit me and 20% of my blood will lose ...then a lighting will be active in my armor

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

If the number is correct, this is the strongest catalyst at 40 faith.
It seems like this is not meant to be used by full faith casters, it's for hybrids who only go up to 40 faith and use their other points in strength or dex.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Unless you use a shield in offhand this catalyst seems weak compared to anything else. At 45 Faith 50 Int Wrath of the Gods looks 589 dmg vs 686 with Sain'ts Talisman +9. Besides enemies break poise on whip WA just like they do to Wolnir's Holy Sword. People would think any pyromancer could use a whip but with Sunlight Spear this whip +5 did 932 dmg. Crystal Chime +5 did 1116 dmg. And we have Caitha's Chime for Dorry's bugs anyway. I guess this whip doesn't look like a great idea, at least for a pyromancer. Ouch... I forgot about pyromancies. Sometimes pyromancers use pyromancies too. Happens
