Dragonslayer Spear is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.
Cross spear associated with Ornstein the Dragonslayer. A weapon of the gods imbued with the strength of lightning.
Two-handed thrust utilizes the support of the cross and requires great might, but can pierce deep into the flesh of dragons, and send mere men flying.
Skill: Lightning Charge
Charge with spear at waist to enwreathe with lightning, then release bolts with final thrust.
Notes and Tips:
- Cannot be Infused or Buffed..
- The description refers to the second attack of the heavy combo, although it does not seem to actually throw people.
- Reinforced with Twinkling Titanite.
- A great pseudo combo with this weapon is R1 > R1 > R2 while two handed.
- The WA > R2 is not required to deal the full damage from the WA.
Location/Where to Find
- From the Dragon-Kin Mausoleum bonfire in the Archdragon Peak area, go up the stairs and it is on the grid right in front of you.

Is it worth to make a ornstein build? With dex Rings, spear, Armor and lightning leaping ring?
- Anonymous
it wouldnt be dark souls without the moonlight gs, patches, and ornstein
- Anonymous
a elegant weapon used by a golden knight from a bygone age
- Anonymous
just get the greatlance and infuse with lighting, you wont get the WA but its generally better
R1 > R1 > R2 is a guaranteed roll catch due to the amazing tracking and range. Been using this for a while now I and haven't missed a single one unless they delay the roll.

can't be parried with metal shield!! maybe because it's bbzzzbzz-ing the parrier
- Anonymous
If you know about this tip, then good for you. But for those who don't know: You can just grab the spear through the thick fence it rests against, there's no need at all to beat Nameless King.
- Anonymous
Am I wrong in thinking I should pass the strength requirement while 2-handing with 14 strength? 14 + 7 > 20? Or is there something I'm missing with that?
Just got randomly one-shot by this in a Crucifixion invasion (PS4). Host was clearly twinking, but could've only been +2 at max (I was invading at +3 normal weapon). My lightning absorption was just under 20%, and I was at almost full HP. They got a WA in while I wasn't looking, and presumably hit me at the very end of it with the bolt and spear for over a thousand damage.
This thing might be a bit coked out on the damage, methinks.

I bet all you casuls that use this trash weapon are a bunch of big tittied lards just like Ornstein. You see when you use the Broken Straight Sword you get in shape and gain some skill so you win both ways, keep that in mind ladies.
- Anonymous
This thing is a beast if you land falling bolt to your opponent
- Anonymous
Only dumb fat Casuls would use such a trash weapon!
PKCS is so much better!
Real Pros and skilled players only ever use PKCS, the best weapon gaming history!

Nameless king: ok ornstein, we re done killing dragons. Hide your equipment somewhere so nobody else does any dragon slaying.
Trollstein: *slips his spear under the door*

Year 2021: fextra still says this weapon sends ppl flying without any visual proof of it.
- Anonymous
People say its a good weapon but honestly, it suffers alot from split dmg imo
- Anonymous
this weapon is similar to the silver knight's moveset (almost as if they trained under ornstein who would have guessed), closest thing we'll have in ds3
- Anonymous
Man i wish it conserved the C/B scaling in Strength and Dex of Dark Souls 1
would've an amazing Quality Spear imo
- Anonymous
For anyone casually reading this page looking for some useful information, this is a DEX weapon. The lightning bolt projectile does not require faith to do decent damage. It does a percentage of the weapon's total AR, rather than relying solely upon the faith-scaling lightning AR as some have speculated. Get 14 or 20 STR depending on if you want to be able to onehand it or not, 40 DEX, ignore FTH and you're good to go.
- Anonymous
Whoever defends that this spear can send people flying but doesn't post a link to a video showing that "feature" of the weapon, is an absolute clown.

Ornstein and Smough are a duo. You can get Smough's hammer in irithyll and his set from Aldrich, yet you have to kill the *****ing nameless king to get Ornstein's set and spear. I feel like one is more difficult than the other
- Anonymous
Never managed to send anyone flying with r2 and haven t found any video about it. So i think it s fake info.
- Anonymous
Strange a spear with lightning effect does not scale with faith
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
This makes clearing up Archdragon Peak way easy. Killed the big serpentbois with a weapon-art + one or two extra-stabs
- Anonymous
"To send people flying, miss the first R2 attack but land the second" Thanks for the pilot lessons!
- Anonymous
The lightning strike effect from the bolt launched during the weapon art will activate for some reason, if the bolt hits a bonfire. The effect happens otherwise only when it hits an enemy, NPC or a player!
- Anonymous
R1 R1 R2 usually hits the opponent, or R1 R2 if you time it. Also, this thing's weapon art can deal enormous amounts of damage if it hits properly... Bad thing the weapon art never hits properly.
- Anonymous
My only gripe with this thing is that the critical attack doesn't let you do Ornstein's thing where he stabs you, lifts you into the air and lightning detonates on you. Otherwise it's pretty good.
- Anonymous
Weapon art is amazing paired with the Leo ring every time i use it I end up doing 1100 damage or slightly less
- Anonymous
How much does the faith scaling affect damage? want to use this but I got to get to it first, wondering if I should level faith with a blessed spear to simulate it or not. If it doesn't effect it that much then I won't bother much
- Anonymous
if you hit all softcaps and wear the leo and lightning clutch(I know unheard of) the weapon art can hit upwards of 1000 on players, more in pve. Sure the spear isnt super overpowered one shot a havel monster anymore, doesnt mean its bad. good range, good r2, good weapon art, heavy chip.
- Anonymous
Roll before a strong attack to land the second one first (to send people flying)
- Anonymous
I hate how the description says that the strong attack can launch people in the air, yet it doesnt at all. Very misleading and poor choice on not bringing a classic feature back.
Plus: On a 40/40/25/30 character, Gargaoyle spear weapon art did 735 on NG++ pontiff knight, while the Dragonslayer's did 811; on a 40/25/50/50 character which is much much more better with Gargaoyle weapon, its weapon art did 815 while the Dragonslayer's did 862 on the same enemy. And the pontiff knight even weak to fire(neutural to lightning). And the Gargaoyle flame spear weapon basically did nothing without follow up, while dragonslayer's did everything.
I'm the one who did those tests before and now I got something new: On a NG++ pontiff knight (not weak to lightning target) the dragonslayer spear weapon art took 7/8 of its HP, and the sword spear weapon art only does slightly more than half of its HP. Considering how long the sword spear weapon art charges, and my character (40/40/15/30) actually favors the sword spear (because it scales much better with faith), I think the dragonslayer spear weapon art is good enough. Also, I figured out how to land the thunderbolt every time: just do not use the R2 follow up for the weapon art. It will cause a push back which messes with the hitbox of the lightning spear, make it not count as a melee hit. You should only use the follow up when you need more physical damage, but in that case you shouldn't even choose this weapon. Overall, it has the best weapon art among almost every "charge" weapon art damage wise, and you don't even cost your stamina and FP in the follow up to poll that out.
I've used it on my ornstein cosplay and it does over 1500 damage with true combo I recommend it if you're gonna start a faith Dex build and if you like Spears alot
- Anonymous
TBH i don't really think any weapon is truly awful in this game... except the clerics candlestick that is trash. But this weapon dmg is nearly the same to what is was in DS1 remastered and if it was in DS2 i think it would be the same.( if it is in Ds2 shout at me) I can't understand why from changes so many things about there weapons. Like nerfing the dmg from smough's hammer in ds3 , increasing the base dmg of the great sword in ds2 to more than that of a black knight weapon.... man. What i'm trying to say is that form nerfs things before they get a chance to be gud. This was somewhat good but no, they nerfed it, much like the fume sword as well. Shame form shame.

Further test:
On a 40/40/10/60 build, the full weapon art(with thunder bolt) did 1250 damage on Harald Knight.
On a 40/40/10/10 build, the full weapon art(with thunder bolt) did 1021 damage on Harald Knight.
On the other hand, on a 40/25/50/50 build(which is my current main character), a Gargoyle Flame Spear full weapon art only does 796 damage on Harald Knight.
It is pretty clear that the normal attack on this weapon is not as good as the Gargaoyle's, but the weapon art is destructive if you do it right. And in that way you can get terrible terrible lightning damage even you put zero investment on faith.
- Anonymous
I think I found the true strength of this weapon and why it is nerfed.
I tested it on my current build which have 40STR 25DEX 50FAI. I know, it is absolutely terrible for this weapon, but I just want to test. My target is NG++ Lothric Knight near the warriors of sunlight altar.
I need to mention that, whenever a lightning spear(includes GLS and SLS) hits in melee range, a thunder bolt will come down and deal additional damage. The WA of this weapon has same effect. But the damage boost of this thing is insane, and somehow it need some tricky effort to trigger it.
During my test, full WA without the thunder bolt effect(it has a visial effect so you can easily know it is triggered or not) does only 382 damage, whichi si terrible indeed.
But a full WA with the thunder bolt effect will have 1188 damage on the same enemy! I know Lothric knight is weak against lightning, but a point blank sunlight spear from Yorshka's Chime (without miracle damage boost ring) on the same enemy only does 947 damage.
The lightning damage on its regular attacks scales bad with faith, but it seems the WA damage get a powerful boost from high faith investment. If you use it right, this thing hits like a fucking truck. It only takes four WA to kill a NG++ Harold Knight which is as good as a Lothric UGS. And it is quite long in "spear" catagory - I know lothric knight long spear is longer but that is considered a "pike".
- Anonymous
A spear of the gods! But can be outdamaged by a lothric knight spear. Let that sink into you...
- Anonymous
Does the sweet spot mechanic apply to the weapon art as well?
I find that I get all the hits with the weapon art, only to deal a measly ~350. Other times, I deal ~850.
Is this because of the sweet spot, or just really disproportionate thrust and lightning defense?
- Anonymous
seems I need to make two chars to compare what weapon suits me better but from the damage/seconds and WA this gem here outshines the NK spear by a lot if I look at the numbers. (pvp viability doesn't interest me)
- Anonymous
it's meant to be grabbed through the gate for the snake people crawling there around. It's only in the arena because Ornstein was killed by it's former master there.

People are saying this thing was nerfed? Holy crap, I like 3 shot lorian on NG+ with it's special
Location edited to what is it now. It probably wont change anymore.
- Anonymous
Must add: "The damage this weapon does is much more than what its states tell you."
- Anonymous
I wish FROM would consider what a player has to do to get a weapon before nerfing it to the damn ground... This weapon is worthless compared to the Swordspear.
- Anonymous
I never used it before it was "nerfed" but with a standard qual-faith build, it still hits quite heavily. maybe because nobody wears armor with lightning resistance, but one full charge on the WA usually erases 60-100% of someones hp, and the r1's I see between 300-700 damage per hit, depending on their armor. if it was "nerfed into the ground" I would have loved to see its damage before then lol
I don't understand why this thing was nerfed. Its damage wasn't too intimidating relative to its weight, min requirements, and reach. It lacks any sort of hyper armor, so damage trading is very risky. Not slow, but not particularly fast attack speed. The lightning damage scales so poorly that its more of a novelty than a feature. Its split damage means it can't even use the full effect of the Leo ring.
Really the only way someone could of made it even mildly OP was if someone made themselves into a squishy dex/faith build with the lightning clutch ring.
- Anonymous
I got it before Nameless king... and my game is patched with the most recent one
- Anonymous
Good job From! This weapon is now even more garbage then it used to be.
- Anonymous
"It is no longer obtainable before killing the Nameless King as of patch 1.11" - This is not true. You can still pick up the spear while walking up to the gate without even starting the Nameless King fight. I'm playing on the PS4 version with patch 1.14, and I just looted it.
- Anonymous
Does this spear does more damage with the running attacks than r1s? It seems it has that wierd property.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
does anyone know why they nerfed this to the ground? i never noticed it being particularly popular or even OP pre nerf....
- Anonymous
If you had the weapon before patch 1.11 did you get to keep it? Becuase if so that's BS
- Anonymous
Something needs to be corrected in the description-you cant send people flying with your second 2H strong attack...
- Anonymous
No. A 40/40 str/dex build with a bit of fth is NOT how you get the optimum out of this spear. Can't believe people here suggesting that and are even getting vote ups. To make it clear once and for all: this spear is meant for dex/fth hybrid builds. Without a heavy investment in faith for the extra lightning damage it is just a good looking piece of junk while str beyond the minimum requirements does almost nothing for us.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Think my game must have bugged out, the spear is nowhere to be found.
- Anonymous

- Anonymous
This is incorrect. You can get the spear before killing Nameless King
Scaling in order of importance: Dex (obviously), Str (surprisingly), Fth (finally). I ran the numbers in the calculator and strength and dexterity both softcap at 40 (phys AR: 387) but faith only softcaps at 35 (lightning AR 151). Actually, the vast majority of the lightning damage on this weapon is innate (not from scaling: 29 extra damage) so this would make a decent dex/str weapon or just a good dex weapon with minimum str. Softcap AR: 538
- Anonymous
The wep art still fires the lightning projectile regardless if you extend the charge or not. So you can either do a short charge or extend it for slightly more damage.
- Anonymous
As of October 2nd the requirement to use the spear is now 20 Str, 20 Dex, 0 Int, and 0 FaithAlthough the Attribute bonus is Still D Str, C Dex, - Int, D Faith
- Anonymous
The weapon art is immensively useful against the Twin Princes. If you time it correctly and start from a short distance away, you can take off about a third of the bosses health. Make sure you have a build with reasonably high dex/str/fai though.
- Anonymous
Am I the only one who finds this weapon slightly over powered compared to most weapons, I taking the weapon art in pvp and pve with hitting with the weapon (with my build) it does around 700-1000 damage which just *****s up most players and damages most bosses and npcs.
- Anonymous
maybe we didn't kill Ornstein in dark souls 1.What if Lord Gwyn knew his 4 knights would be hunted and trained body doubles to take their place. Then while Ornstein was looking for the Nameless King they dueled and Ornstein lost. That would explain the bit about his gear just on the ground. And his/her hair decomposed so Ornstein should've been dead for a long time.
- Anonymous
A friend of mine didn't know you can grab this without fighting KOS/NK. After the second bonfire where you fight the first dragon kin summoner, you can actually examine the gate where its drop hovers and grab it that way, without having to win the boss fight.
- Anonymous
I played some PVP in the road of sacrifice, where water is. Is it possible that the weapon art does more dmg in the water? They got at least 900 dmg with 3/4 of all hits. cant remember this high dmg..?
- Anonymous
I am struggling to think of any other weapon or item in a Souls game that just sits on the floor like this, other than player-dropped items. Everything else I can think of comes from a chest, an NPC, is looted off of a corpse, whether it's a pre-placed corpse or one you killed. Is there any other item that is just sitting there, on its own? This may not seem like a big deal but it would be very strange to break the pattern, especially now that we're five game deep (four if you count only the ones Miyazaki directed).
- Anonymous
Only thing that bugged me was that using a strong attack my characters' hand would seemingly twist around the wrong way to grab the guard, before slurping back into its proper position.

Dragonslayer spear or dragonslayer swordspear which is better overall?

Took half the health of the king of the storm with one shot of the skill... me likey.
Its kind of been overshadowed by the Swordspear and other fancy new weapons in terms of hype, but the old Dragonslayer Spear is actually really good in this game.

It seems that the lightning charge can roll right through light attack spam. Very nice to catch some playes off guard as people don't expect that on a spear.
- Anonymous
The battleart can deal tons of damagealthough it requires you to land the final thrust of the battle art to do great dmg which is hard to land
- Anonymous
WHY IS THE FAITH SCALING SO *****TY? In my opinion they should nerf the base damage a little but add actual scaling with faith like souls 2 and souls 1.
- Anonymous
the weapon art on this totally murders The Nameless King's Dragon, if the full charge hits the dragon is open for a ripotse then charge again.

With 40 STR/40 DEX/10 FTH, the Dragonslayer Spear has 514 AR (127 of that is lightning).

By far my favorite weapon in this game, makes dealing with the snakemen in archdragon peak a breeze, and since its weapon art fires a bolt its good for punishing retreating players, also really good at breaking medium to small shield guards because of the weapon arts consecutive hits. Be careful though, its pretty easy to parry

Excellent PvP weapon, the rolling downward hit is especially handy. Quite a lot of tracking on it, catches people off guard a lot

The spear was not anywhere to be found in the area. I've looked about everywhere and videos show it being in plain sight either way. Don't know if I didnt do something in particular after fight the final boss of the area.
The +5 dragonslayer spear WA with 40 dex deals 1130 damage to lothric knights and definitely melts them.even further with priestess ring and lloyd sword and lighning clutch.I use it to farm in lothric castle and it one-shots the red eye one with WA
