Spears & Pikes have long reach and are excellent for dealing damage while remaining defensive. Spears & Pikes function well when paired with a shield, particularly greatshields, as they have relatively moderate stamina consumption and can be quickly thrusted without lowering your guard. These weapons require patience and careful spacing to make proper use of, but are capable of punishing counterattacks. Their most common Skill is Charge.

Quick heads-up for anyone coming from Elden Ring, shield pokes (block+R1) are bugged in Dark Souls 3 and use your weapon's (not your shield's) blocking stats, which renders it mostly pointless. Spears also have much faster R1s while two-handed than 1H. They're a great weapon class overall, my personal favorite in DS3, but they're very easy to parry, lack any hyperarmor and are barely longer than straight swords. Just keep those weaknesses in mind, and may your running R1 strike true.

Here's the thing that bothers me with spears in general (and halberds for that matter): their moveset is just poke, poke and poke. Ok, r1 is a good old thrust but r2 could be a side to side slash or a vertical one, or when 2 handed it could be a bash with the pole. It feels like only the tip of these weapons are taken into account, disregarding how versatile polearms usually are.

nothing in this game has caused me more frustration than trying to use a spear

Spears should've gotten a stance, similar to straight-swords, that let's them choose between the shield splitter attack and charge. Would've added far more versatility and depth to the weapon class.

kind of weird that we don't get the spear of the spears of the chuch considering that most of the spear covenant items talk about it and it has a full model in the game

So after a ton of messing around with soulsplanner for DS1, 2, and 3, I've realized the biggest reason why spears feel off is because this is the only game where they're weaker than straight swords regardless of build. For the original DS1, spears were stronger with dex, and only slightly lost on quality or str. In DS2, they were pretty much universally stronger. Here, the only spear that beats out straight swords universally is the great lance...Adding in that every straight sword button is faster than every spear button and that's why they're so ass in this game. There's almost nothing a spear can do that straight swords can't do better in DS3.

I honestly hope that Fromsoftware gives Spears and Pikes a much more varied in their movesets in Elden Ring , because tbh in this game there's a lot of very boring spears that have next no variety (with some few exceptions) in their movesets.

"Oh boy I can't wait to space my opponent with my superior rea-"
*gets killed by a slightly latent straight sword from 10 feet away

I found most light weapons in this game got a huge range boost compared to the other games, and spears are the awkward middle ground between swords and halberds as a result. Their range and damage, barring the longest ones, isn't much better than a straight sword, and the halberds are just generally better suited to the more aggressive combat style in ds3. Am I missing something? I love this weapon class in PvE, but can't help but feel like I'm missing out
- Anonymous
I still don't forgive this game for ****ing up shield attacks as hard as it did
The Ringed Knight Spear and the Dragonslayer Swordspear have 0 critical % on this page instead of 100%. plz fix

Even great games like Dark Souls series has programmers that are unable to program weapons like spear to hit where our crosshair is aiming. Spears miss enemies who are not the same elevation as us.
- Anonymous
Remember: when you're using a Spear in Dark Souls 3, you must play much more smarter against a player than with any other weapon.
Be unpredictable, use your superior reach in your advantage to space with ease, use every move in the weapon's arsenal (even switch to the one handed moveset to mess with the parry timing of the opponent)
Good luck fellow Hollow, because using a Spear in PvP ain't easy in this game.

Really wished most of these pokey sticks had more of a moveset to them. I get they are sears so thrust is the way, but man it gets so boring after awhile.

The best spear for quality is the lothric knight long spear as it has the highest range (except the saint bident) and the hightest non-split damage
The best spear for dark build is either the plow or the bident. Plow has more damage, but bident has longer range
- Anonymous
Why can’t we comment on saint bident
Just think it’s cool how the president gave us a weapon
- Anonymous
For some reason, the Saint's Bident's page is broken, can't see the comments section at the bottom. In anycase, it's bizarre how the Bident scales fine with lightning, but it's performance in blessed infusion is just trash. While it's not optimized yet, I'm running a hybrid build under SL100 with 20/35/35 in STR, DEX, & FTH, and for a cleric's spear, 306 AR is just pathetic.

If you're an r1 spammer than these are easily parried... Go practice parrying against lothric and silver knights I guarantee you miss the most on spears... Don't be easily telegraphed and people tend to miss parries the most in PvP against spears... JS fun toys... I like greatswords and Ultras personally
- Anonymous
Spears work fine, shield poke is good if used properly. You are just trash
'A bad workman blames his tools'

Spears are just a nightmare when they are used by laggy gankers/pursuers… Impossible to fight, except if you are tanky as hell.

1H spear/pike = Slow R1 Quick R2. 2H spear/pike = Quick R1 Slow R2.

I wonder if using These while blocking would be useful against passive spacing-abusers?

Perhaps preventing turtling is right, but I think spear itself is way too weak in ds3. I mean, I want to use those spears WITHOUT shield but they are all sucks. I used to wield dragonslayer spear in ds1 & 2, w/ or w/o shield, and at that time the spear was just fine weapon, not considering turtling of course. I don't like it for being so boring. But now what? Weak damage, long pre-attack delay, not quiet enough range, narrow hit box, even narrower range of strategies. Spears are like collection of all bad aspects of weapons. Even if you want to use Charge WA, it's far better to use Astora Greatsword than any other spear or pike.
Spear/Pike/Thrusting Sword behind Shield is legitmately so crippled it's probably not worth using. You will take at least Half damage through your Shield, loss of Stamina from Shield being hit, from your hit, extra Stamina loss and cancelled hit depending. Oh! And locked in place. FS left this broken, another thing in a line of busted mechanics. Better to just wildly trade hits with Poise and certain Spear/Pike WA's. Cause thats such an improvement. It's like they added the extra mechanics because they couldn't decide if they were going to get away with lying about Poise but left the calculation from Weapon rather than Shield. We get to enjoy Stun, damage and lock as a result. No extra Critical damage, simple Moveset, small hitbox, easy deflection and lower damage per hit was offset by Shield up attacks. "Whoosh," the sound of it flying out the window!
- Anonymous
Attacking with your shield up sounds great and all until you realise the block and stability values of said shield are replaced with the spear. Good game FromSoft.
- Anonymous
Spears are to thrusting swords what great swords are to straight swords. possibly.

- Anonymous
Rather you learn to parry or you loose agains tthis class + lagg this class is broken as fck.
- Anonymous
When blocking incoming attack while poking with a spear with shield up, the game use damage reduction/stability numbers from the spear, not the shield.
- Anonymous
Does anyone know if the charge weapon art on most of the spears can be parried when free aiming? It seems that every time i see someone with a buckler in pvp i give them a free parry.
- Anonymous
Golden Ritual Spear deals no lightning damage. Should only be physical/magic
- Anonymous
14/8/2017 Both Ringed and Swordspear have their counter values listed as 0.
Interesting thing I've discovered about spears: Hitting a target with the pole section instead of the "sweet spot" (the tip) converts some of the damage into strike damage. This can be clearly seen when hitting enemies resistant to thrust but weak to strike (like skeletons). This also explains why the Leo ring's damage doesn't always activate in a damage trade (because its not receiving full thrust damage).

Golden Ritual Spear link is partially broken. The clickable text take you to the page but clicking the picture takes you to the Dragonslayer Spear

The Pike can be dropped by any branch-wielding hollow, not just those after the crucifixion woods bonfire. Also, the Lothric Knight Spear can drop from the knight right before the Broadsword room, although it's indeed easier to farm it at Vordt's.
- Anonymous
true that where are the twin blades i mean you brought back black freaking knights but no twin sword what the f actually thinking about it a black knight wielding a twin sword that would be epic make it happen and have him 100 drop it if you kill him and its sword art or battle art idk needs to spin around so blades hit everything next to you and then strong attack to extend the blades super large make it op but have because its old have like 20 durability okay make it happen.
- Anonymous
I miss Santier's Spear from DS 2 and the twinblades that have similar movesets....

The reach and R1 spam with these weapons is ridiculous. I have yet to see anyone beat an adapt player using a spear that also, wasn't using a weapon with the same reach and poke ability. Everyone literally just gets poked to death as far as I can tell, and I do a fair amount of PvP. Just my observations.
- Anonymous
I don't know you guys but I cannot deal with aggressive spear users who spam R1 like no tomorrow. Everytime I roll into their attacks and try a roll attack they just roll away after *****ing 4 R1... and because of the stupid tracking you cannot backstab them... Since rolling is ridiculus in this game fromsoft should think increase stamina consumption... That's the only way to balance this type of spammy weapons. I'm sick of seeing people spamming R1 3-4 times then roll away. There is no skill in that. And I know that best counter is using a halberd... Since halberds have decent reach and more hyper armor than spears... but if your opponent is also switch his/her weapon... switching weapons is become an endless loop.TL;DR: please fromsoft increase stamina consumption of spears to balance them.
- Anonymous
I just realised that there arent Silverknight weapons in DS3, including the spear.
Spears are for chasing down the last guy of a shitty gank without doing a bunch of collateral damage to your bro invader.
