I think I found the best use for this “spear”: you know how some wizards/witches don’t have a melee weapon of any kind, only a staff? This weapon is perfect for cosplaying any character like that. For example Karla. You get the ability to poke people with your staff if they get too close and stuff. Pretty great.

Mimic falls into the abyss, I can't keep the drop item, it's gone.

I'm a bit tired of never understanding if people are commenting on a weapon from the perspective of PvE or PvP. It's a huge difference and a gimmicky weapon can throw other players off in PvP, but against the dumb enemies of the game, you just want pure unadulterated damage. So when people say that weapons like this is good, I am leaning towards them meaning PvP. After all, that's what most people seem to like.
- Anonymous
Pretty much a weapon built around a faith heavy pyro, dark or miracle caster. Gives you the option to use lower level sorceries at a higher spellbuff than using the basic catalysts. Other than that don't expect too much from this thing.
- Anonymous
with 20 int, 30 faith, 18 strength and 40 dex i used this unupgraded and stabbed the first crossbow hollow on high wall for 63 damage, with the weapon art the same enemy took 80 damage. So the weapon art may add roughly 20 flat damage, or 30% give or take to damage (or double for just magic damage). Does anyone have an accurate number for this or has it not really been experimented with?

This thing is actually one versatile beast of a catalyst for FTH casters with a bit more to give. Assuming you go for the requirement, 18/60 on INT/FTH, a very unique set of spells, weapons, and ways to play become available. You still have all your miracles & the usual FTH stuff available to you. But you also get a sizeable array of ground-level yet high-utility sorceries, and sorceries that do magic damage now scales with your FTH! You might not have access to the most powerful sorceries, but the point of this weapon with its requirements being all over the place is that you are going to get EVEN MORE on top of the powerful miracles you can already do. The only thing only thing you can't do at this point is fire damage.
- Anonymous
If I use this spear, will the rings that boost miracles apply their buff to the sorcery or will I need to swap to the dragon rings?

Before someone says this spear is bad I implore you to consider the following: the int requirement is 18, which is the same requirement as Great Magic Shield. It is also a spear class weapon, so it can attack while holding guard. Furthermore this spear consumes the least stamina per hit than any other spear. you can equip the spider shield in the left hand and this in the right, to make a shield with 100% block in all damage types and 100+ stability, making it you lose 0 stamina from being hit. The spider shield also gives weapon skill, so you can use the steady chant weapon art to buff the spears damage both on attack and when it casts spells. You can invest minimum int requirements and still have a very powerful Great Heavy Soul Arrow with 60 faith
I tried making a build with this thing a while back because I like spells, and I love the 'idea' of spears, however spears just aren't good in this game. I had a really high AR but because of split damage I could never actually hurt anyone. It also sucks for clearing PvE because of the terrible range coupled with the fact that spears in general are just worse straight swords both in terms of speed and range. I really want to make this thing work, and I know some have managed to do so, but when you have over 500 AR and it still takes 10+ hits to kill a phantom...

golden lightning spear. golden ritual spear. faith scaling. can't cast miracles with it. **** you and the mustache you rode in on dark souls. this is why i cheat
- Anonymous
this thing has got highest spell buff among all weapon catalysts (220 with 60 FAITH, which is really decent). and you don't really need high INT for most useful spells. 23 INT allowed you to use almoust every importent spell aside of Soul Spear and Farron Hail.
edit: you can replace Crystal Magic Weapon with Darkmoon Blade.
- Anonymous
Is this the original spear, depicted by the ritual spear fragment from spears of the church? Could imagine it has some synergies in the spears of the church fight, because for what else is this weapon good?
- Anonymous
The odd build needed to use this is very underrated. You don't have to be locked into using GRS. 30 INT/60 FTH nets you good damage with dark miracles. You can also use the SSS, and it opens up the efficacy of using either standard pyro infusions, or lightning/blessed. Very versatile. The spear itself is good with great magic shield or paired with the sunless talisman to poise cast. I'd love to see how From would cast an NPC to use this weapon.
- Anonymous
Is this supposed to be used on a 40/40 build or something? Because sorceries still have their int requirement. Something that’s pretty hard to reach when you’re a faith build. Forgive my ignorance if I’m wrong and feel free to correct me.
- Anonymous
Has a true combo with Farron Flashsword and Old Moonlight with Sage's Ring +2, just like Heysel's Pick.
- Anonymous
faith builds get sorcery stuff, why not int builds get miracle stuff? I'm not complaining, but it'd be nice to have the variety
- Anonymous
Why does everything have a fricking faith requirement in this game?
- Anonymous
it's perfect for casting miracles with short bow in left hand

Kinda disapoiting...the range is abysmal...scales with faith but isnt good with dark sorceries... And i wish it had the moveset of a halberd, after all its how Aldrich uses it to attack us...

I use this on my Cleric, so I can cast golden sorceries (Cast Light for, ya know, fashion souls + Hidden Body is quite useful). Sometimes I poke the enemies with it. For sure, there are better things to wield, but I like this weapon.
- Anonymous
I may be wrong, but I actually find Dark Edge to be the most useful of all the spell sword-type spells with this weapon, and it’s because of the Spear weapon-classes struggle to track. If you follow up a spear poke with Farron Flashsword, Soul Greatsword, or Old Moonlight, you just don’t turn enough to reliably hit your opponent. I’ve had players circle around me without even dodging and not get hit. Dark Edge is a bit more useful in my experience because it combos well when you poke them twice and you can catch them with it after they panic roll out or even to the side.

I already beat the game, and the mimic isn't there, only a symbol of avarice :( anyone knows why?
- Anonymous
Despite having an S rating for Faith this scales very poorly being just with Faith! Had it also have at least a high C or high B rating for INT this would be the strongest Spellbuff staff. Another problem is Izalith staff same stats, a weak Faith stat scaling and needs three points of Faith just you can cast a spell, it won't gain any extra power from Faith no "2s" or "3s" only "1s" and very weak points really, Izalith also won't boost the power of Dark Pyromancy since in the description it just says Sorceries. Same with this staff with its Faith scaling. Had it boosts the power of Faith Miracles then in the off we could of wield a chime or Talisman and deal extra damage to power scaling of 10% like a Mornes ring.
- Anonymous
You can use Hunters Charms to make the Mimic chest fall asleep... that way you don't have to kill it and there's a chance for it Tom roll a Helm of Avarice
- Anonymous
The only catalyst I feel comfortable playing with as a melee sorcerer.
- Anonymous
I'm just wondering how good this thing is at casting dark magic?
- Anonymous
Has anyone else Noticed that this staff looks somewhat similar to the Tin Darkmoon catalyst from Dark Souls 1 (Albeit Twisted and somewhat corrupted looking) Kind of interesting considering that the Darkmoon longbow looks drastically different to how it looked before. Could Aldrich's consumption of Gwyndolin have corrupted his gear as well? Or maybe Aldrich just ate these Along with gwyndolin and they're just partially digested.
I killed this mimic. I know it dropped something and the Symbol of Avarice for me, but it wasn't the Golden Ritual Spear. I know because I cant find it anywhere and I wouldn't have sold it.
I am trying to get it since I am a sorcerer and also simply want to collect every item in the game. I guess i'll try again in NG+

For anyone having issues getting to this weapon: From the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire head to the exit leading out towards the balcony/overlook area, head left and go up the stairs to the courtyard with the giants lying on the ground and head left yet again to see a small underground area, from within the underground area head left yet again and you'll see an opening leading to some stairs which'll open up out onto an open-air hall crowded by pyromancy throwing clerics, if you look behind you at this point you'll see a small flight of stairs leading up to a door and once you go threw the door you'll just follow the path to the lever that unlocks the shortcut elevator located in the Pontiff Sulyvahn boss room and the mimic which'll drop the item for you.
- Anonymous
Sooo... I killed the mimic with hit and run tactics and the last time I ran, the mimic was at very low health. I wasn't facing the mimic and I was pretty far away from it, but somehow it died on its own. I assumed it was fall damage, so I looked all over the lower area. Then I looked through the entire top area and couldn't find it either. I hadn't rested at the bonfire or left the area or anything; the item was nowhere to be found. Now I have to wait until NG+ to get it. Pretty bad bug if you ask me...

If you play it right you have a spear, longsword *with roll attacks,* a sweeping magic aoe (greatsword, old moonlight), a projectile weapon and aoe-generator (pestilent mercury, snapfreeze, etc.) ALL IN ONE HAND. Bonus points in using a weapon-art shield and you can choose to either 'simple' it or use Great Magic Shield to turn even the buckler into the stat-equivalent of a greatshield.
The downside is that you are invested to the weapon and precisely what you want to cast, as your personal level cap decision (or lack thereof) very distinctly limits you. It's important to build how you're comfortable. Aren't good at rapidly switching spells? Keep the attunement simple and keep the spells you're good with. Prefer to use Wolf's Greatshield and thus need 30 str? Fashion Souls takes its toll sometimes and you're probably going to sacrifice Int, dex, and maybe even a bit of faith. Want offhand or secondary weapons? Do you use them more than the spear? You might be better off just using a catalyst.
The point is you are picking up a weapon that will force you to 'find' your playstyle and adapt to it. Keep that in mind, but when you find your groove it's an incredibly fun and effective weapon.
Some common INT caps:
18: The bare minimum, but it buys you Great Heavy Soul Arrow, all the best utility spells (aural, hidden), snap freeze, Great Magic Shield, and the frankly-op Cast Light.
23: Farron Flashsword and Great Farron Dart. Excellent mixups, stab/swipe with spear then flashsword, GFD is a great chip tool and a quick little slap from a distance.
25: Old Moonlight. Looks badass, but also a combination of MLGS and Soul Greatsword in a convenient package and hits like a truck.
30: Stretching the boundary of 'why not just be a regular hybrid caster' gets you Crystal Magic Weapon (not really applicable, but good to know), Homing Crystal Soul Mass, Pestilent Mercury, and Dark Edge. Don't knock Dark Edge; it's an incredibly-squirrely tool when used without lock-on and can make some very sharp tracking turns. Great poke > Slam. Pestilent Mercury is surprisingly useful for a variety of encounters. For example: Aural decoy + pestilent mercury can basically trivialize entire swaths of the game and has the bonus of killing stuff instead of just running past it, and PM is great for doing tons of damage (by %!) to lots of big stationary enemies.
32: Affinity and Soul Spear. If you're at this point, it's because you wanted Affinity. Great Heavy Soul Arrow is cheaper FP wise and hits almost as hard as the spear; the spear just pierces targets. You've also sacrified an extra 12 points of INT in what might be a 120-150 build that are probably cutting back on your Faith total.
Some things to remember:
- 20 dex + sage ring gets you max cast speed, and the spear doesn't actually gain all that much phys damage in comparison. If you're going low-INT it's worth it to push DEX up to 40, but the strength of the spear is in its mixups and casting. You're going to basically choose your balance and it might take a respect or two to find the right 'spot.'
- Faith is your power stat: If you're going to sacrifice, do it from Faith *last.* The magic dmg of your spear, and your spell buff, are directly attached to this stat. You're going to want to go into this planning for 60 Faith whether you plan on using miracles or not.
- Just because I talked about sorceries doesn't mean that's all you can cast! It's just the way to make the most of the spear; carrying a talisman for an offhand Lightning Stake isn't a bad idea as it gives you a self-aoe nuke and a different damage type. You're also in the market for pyromancies of your choosing.
- Good offhand options for other builds work here too: Simple caestus, small shields, and offhand weapons synergize well with your stat requirements and the counter damage of the spear can hit like a truck. Weapon shields buffed with simple (East Iron shield is good one at 3 weight with 'weapon skill') give you the option to buff your spear, and buff your shield or constantly regenerate small amounts of FP. You can poke from behind a shield with great magic shield on and laugh when your target shield is basically an impenetrable wall for about 30 seconds. Your options are numerous, effective, and varied.
- Fashion Souls.
- Flashsword makes your spear into a hybrid magical longsword. Don't just spam the standing attack; you can do backsteps and regular attacks to thrust, or switch it up to a running sweep with Farron Flashsword, same with rolls and running attacks. At any given time, you are one of several 'kinds' of opponents if you're fighting someone and it's going to take someone at the top of their game to beat you at the top of yours. Rollcatch with Greatsword or Old Moonlight, pelt them when they roll away with darts, if you've got the attunement you've got so many options. Experiment and you'll find some interesting ways to keep people on their toes.
- Let the haters hate: A weapon is as viable as you want it to be. Sure, someone rolling around naked with 66 str smashing stuff with a hammer might be "best," or they'll tell you to use the latest 'meta' build, but that's not why you're looking at this spear. I'm here to tell you it works. There are those who will tell you there are 'better options.' Objectively, they're right, but that's not the spirit of Dark Souls, is it? Many monsters, minions, and people have died to this spear; seize your opportunity to start adding to the pile.

Darkmoon knights with Golden Ritual Spear to protect the gods.
Spears of The Church also has their Golden Ritual Spears to protect one of the members of the Gods
- Anonymous
This is actually pretty useful on high level faith builds. The spell buff is the same as it is on the canvas talisman for me, both are max upgraded. 18 int doesn't get you a ton of sorceries but the few it does is enough to varify your arsenol. And you can use most pyromancies too. I actually used this to kill dragonslayer armor, as he isn't weak to lightning. did the frozen weapon buff and snapfreeze and some heavy, great heavy soul arrows. Probably the easiest time i've had with him.
- Anonymous
I just noticed, this is the Darkmoon catalyst from DS1. How nice, I can ***** up my gwyndolin build since I'll need faith now.
If you're wondering if you can create a build with this beast, you can; this, Great Magic Shield, and a Pierce Shield (Well, any Shield Bash shield really, but you don't need a Greatshield due to GMS) will work wonders. You'll want Farron Flashsword to add mix-ups into your attacks, not required (It does push you up to 23 Int) but recommended.
- Anonymous
This thing can kinda work with the right build, but it's mainly good for mixups, and its base moveset is... not that great. A weird (and good) thing I noticed is despite it having a lot magic damage, and rather low phisical piercing damage, it deals a TON of counter damage, even without the leo ring. Oh well :T
- Anonymous
It says "contraption does not move", how do you activate the elevator?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
its clearly a pimp cane it doesnt need to hit hard or be long when your pimpen
- Anonymous
Example with 9 int and 30 faith could i atune sorceries with up to 30 int requirement?
- Anonymous
Possibly a stupid question, but does anyone know if casting using this spear allows you to keep your shield up a la normal attacks with a spear? If so, could potentially be good to get around being staggered out of spells
- Anonymous
I've tested with this and the court sorcerer's staff and the ritual spear uses up significantly less stamina for the same spells, which is very useful.
- Anonymous
From a glance it seems to cast from your hand so you do not get extra range on spells like Soul Great Sword and Farron Flash Blade but this would need to be confirmed.
- Anonymous
So I've been using this for couple days, very nice dual purpose right hand. I have fire hand on left and golden spear in right. It allows me to free up a weapon slot so I can wear heavier armor. I rock sunlight tali, pyro hand, and this spear. Must use for hybrid caster.
- Anonymous
I watched the video, and when I pulled that lever, it said the contraption doesn't move. What do?
- Anonymous
A *****ed miracle catalyst weaponit even scales with FTH for crying out loud
- Anonymous
This is the same weapon wielded by Aldrich, Devourer of Gods. As a catalyst, he uses this weapon to casts magic projections of the Gravelord Sword, the Lifehunt Scythe and the Darkmoon Bow, along with other magic attacks.
- Anonymous
Scaling and damage is wholly meh, but you're getting a spear to poke from behind shields, huge reach for soul/flash-sword spells and access to the spammable sorceries even with base requirement Int. Should keep invaders on their toes.
- Anonymous
If it has faith scaling its meant to be used with dark sorceries which scale off both duh
- Anonymous
Pretty sure this thing has faith scaling (it gets applied to sorceries) which isn't shown here. While it's nice that you can cast sorceries scaling with faith you still need to meet the int requirement to actually use those sorceries, which makes this thing pretty useless as you will need the int anyway so might as well get a decent staff. Save your twinkling titanite for Izalith Staff for some sweet dark damage.
- Anonymous
So wait, this allows you to cast sorceries which will then scale with your faith? Am I missing something?
- Anonymous
I could see this catching people by surprise. Miracle, miracle, miracle, SOUL GREATSWORD
In the fight with Aldrich in Anor Londo, you can actually see him casting his sorceries with this thing. I personally don't mind the lack of Int scaling, but I felt like it would've been needed just by a *little* bit. Complain all you want about how catalysts work, but it would've made sense for this thing to scale off of both.
